Overpriced disappointment. Decided to walk down and check out Cafe Jolie for brunch Sunday morning. It was a nice day and loud inside, so we asked to sit on the patio outside. Unfortunately, they have plastic windows coming down from the awnings that turn the patio into an unbearable greenhouse on a sunny day and eliminate the chance of a refreshing breeze, depending on where you're sitting. Service was slow (we were told they were down a couple people; ok) and it took us a long time to get tiny cups of ice water (we were told they were also low on ice; ok). We ordered a half-order of beignets which took too long to come out and were terrible. I know I've been spoiled by the beignets at Cafe du Monde in New Orleans, but I've also made better beignets myself at home. It's like $10 for 8 beignets--in what universe is that a HALF order? They were way too doughy, more like a biscuit on the inside and the outside tasted like puff pastry. In lieu of topping them with enough powdered sugar, the give you chocolate sauce instead--ew. I'd much rather pay $5 for 3 well-made beignets with an appropriate amount of powdered sugar--skip the chocolate. The fresh sliced berries were the best part of the dish. My girlfriend had the crab benedict which she described as too heavy because the crab was over-breaded. She was also pissed that her side of country-style potatoes amounted to 4 pieces of potato. I had the huevos rancheros, which I actually found to be quite delicious. I didn't mind the modest portion size because I don't like to eat until I'm stuffed anyway--especially at breakfast. However, like everything else at this place, the price tag is all wrong. Until they reduce the price of every item on their menu at least $1.50, we won't be going back. I can't believe that meal cost me nearly $50 and we didn't even have drinks (coffee or otherwise!). The food is good, but it's not THAT good. read more

Cute little place off Webster. I've had both their Eggs Benedict & their Crabcakes Benedict .. I don't see what the big whoop was on the Crabcakes was but ok. Bf had the pancakes & sausage. He liked it (but he will eat anything) Also, my sweet daughter found a piece of gum under the table. (Ew) What really set this place aside was their service. Our server, Amanda, was the sweetest! She provided great customer service but what really set her apart was how well she treated our daughter. Now, our daughter is 4 and a handful at times. So when Amanda asked us if we would like some "coffee or juice?" And my daughter answered "coffee" Amanda cleverly brought our her juice in a mini coffee cup. So cute! & then as we were getting ready to leave, our daughter had a huge melt down. I mean hysterically crying. I was horrified. Lunch date with a gal pal. Our dressed salads didn't have enough vinaigrette, so we asked for a side of dressing. I appreciate the fact that obviously the vinaigrette is house made, but the oil and vinegar weren't emulsified and instead we had olive oil in a cup minutes after it arrived. I ordered the Croque Monsieur and it was not grown at all more like a Croque Enfant. The Gruyere cheese was the star and the brioche toast was fine, but overall it was not crispy, gooey, or buttery and with maybe one slice of ham. The ham was slightly thicker than average deli ham but not stacked and very sad to look inside (didn't reach the sides of the bread). The creme (shouldn't it be a cheese sauce?) on the side was ok (correct consistency) but needed more flavor (perhaps nutmeg?) or maybe a simple fix like a dash of salt? We ate al fresco (no S&P on the table) and decided against dessert, even though I saved calories from the sinless Mister I ordered. The place is cute and the details are immaculate and well thought out. For looks alone, I would give it 5 stars, as it really looks and feels like a Parisian cafe minus the smog and cigarette smoke (Yey Alameda). And I don't recall any music outside either, some Django Reinhardt would have definitely made the ambiance Tres Jolie! read more

The owner just contacted me and that was a pleasant surprise. In our conversation I commented that most time when I have eaten out the waitstaff never returns to a customer and ask show things are. This is my number one gripe when eating out. In the event the server had done this, perhaps things could have been corrected at that time. Since I work in Alameda, there are limited places to get a good lunch for a reasonable price. My co-worker and I ate here today after a few weeks of holding out. I got the Arugla Salad and added chicken. It was good except it cost $14.00 because I added a protein. In my opinion its really over priced since theres only 4 ingredients in the salad. My co-worker got sweet potato fries and a steak sandwhich. Both were good minus the steak being a little chewy and hard to break off. Overall I rated this place a 3 due to the terrible service and lack of direction from the staff. Its sad to me that the place is very cute and put together but the staff are rude, they do not know whats going on, and they look dis-shevled. They do not match the theme of the restaurant and I feel that if they could hire new staff I would have rated them a 4. If I were rating the food and the ambiance, this place would get 4 stars, it's really lovely and the food was good. However, we went on the first weekend that they were open for full meal service (I'd stopped in for their decent coffee and good brownie at the coffee bar earlier that week) and it SHOWED. At some places, it's considered a sign of excellent, world-class service if the waitstaff remembers your order without writing it down. As far as I'm concerned, that's a good parlor trick IF the waitstaff remembers. You know how at most breakfast places, they'll bring your food and make sure that you have the basic condiments. I'm fine if I have to say "I had a side of ___" or "Ketchup, please?" But it took literally five tries of "Is that everything?" Ketchup, fries, another coffee, toast, another knife and fork., PLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASE! The table next to us was having similar problems, and we were laughingly mouthing along with each other's requests. "I'm sorry" said the really very sweet young lady who was waiting on us "We just weren't expecting this many PEOPLE!" Sorry, kiddo, that's not our fault, and it doesn't excuse forgetting basic things like the fact that three people will likely need three knives and forks. We're going to give them a month and try again. They are literally a block from my house, and the coffee and food were good. But after waiting literally TWO YEARS for them to open up (look it up, they had a menu in the local phone book for 2010!), the service was terribly disappointing. read more

This place is pretty yummy!! I didn't feel too adventurous today and just ordered the Jolie's House salad it was pretty good but more on the plain side. We also ordered the Crab Cake Benedict and it was BOMB. The egg was cooked perfectly and the zest of the crab cake was superb. We also got a cronut which was decent, it kind of tasted like an asian pastry? We should have ordered the beignet because they looked so good! It was just me and boyfriend and so we couldn't have ordered so much food. We brought the dog with us and Cafe Jolie brought our pup a doggy water bowl! I would say a good amount of people seated outside had their doggies with them which is nice. We love our dog and its great how Cafe Jolie was so welcoming about it! After a year and a half hiatus, we returned to Jolie. Breakfast is our main restaurant outing, and Jolie had disappointed us with over seasoned potatoes and skimpy portions. We don't like huge portions of anything but 6 or 7 chunks of potato is a little bit cheap. Happy to say things have changed for the better. The over seasoned potatoes were subdued and the quantity was just about right. The spinach cheese bacon omelette was fantastic. Quick Review: This place is great, you should go. I will be going back too. Details: My party of four went on a lovely Sunday afternoon for brunch. They don't take a reservations and so around the time we went at 11 it was packed. About 10 parties ahead of us. With that being said the wait wasn't entirely too long. About 30-40 minutes. We ordered our cappuccino and I ordered a cafe au lait that came in a huge cup. It was perfect. My sister and cousin said they their cappuccinos were strong. I ordered crab cakes Benedict, which was AWESOME. My party really liked their plates as well. They ordered steak and eggs, pastrami sandwich, and salmon Florentine. All were really good. I must also mention the service we received was great too. The waitress made a mistake on our order, notified us of it, and compensated for the delay in our for with some beignets and discount which we were really appreciative for. The beignets weren't my favorite. The bread themselves wasn't sweet like I like it and they didn't compensate for that with much powdered sugar sprinkled on top but hey we got them complementary. read more

We had a very good breakfast experience; we'll definitely return. The ingredients are fresh, the menu has a nice variety and the portions are satisfying. We were very happy with the service. The decor is light, clean and very tastefully done. With all due respect to former the Tillie's at this site, this Cafe Jolie isn't Tillie's and I am very grateful for that. My Tillie's experience is summed up with two words: canned mushrooms. If one can't make a fresh omelette, good luck staying in business (Tillie's didn't). Two of us had a nicely prepared cheese, tomato, and bacon omelette and our third had the French toast. Everyone was happy with the choices. We started with beignets (I give a little higher marks to the former Cafe Fanny in Berkeley), but great to see it on the menu. A beautiful cozy place for brunch. We loved it!!! We were visiting SF and decided to stay in Alameda, Marina Village Inn. Awesome coffee, awesome breakfast..especially the country fried potatoes. You would have to wait a bit to get a table( it was Sunday). It gets a little noisy indoors since all the tables were occupied when we got there and the service is a little slow ( im not complaining cos its worth the wait). Staff is friendly. Only downside is the place is small, so waiting can be a pain when all tables are taken. And the service needs to be consistent. Definitely would visit the place when I visit SF again. read more

Arrived at 11:15am on a Sunday afternoon, seated around 12 noon and immediately ordered because we were starving!!!...and did not get food until 12:18. I ordered the St. Tropez omelet ($8.95) which consisted of ham, green bell pepper, onions and gruyere cheese..it was decent but a bit dry just like the roasted potatoes so I needed lots of ketchup for some moisture to make it go down w/o choking myself..and it also came with toast which was light and airy, not that dense kind. So for that price it should have came with a piece of bacon or sausage.. We also had the lemon ricotta pancakes..that was nice and fluffy. I would get that again if I choose to come back and not starving. Service was "ok". While waiting 45 min for a table, I noticed several tables unoccupied so that irked me. I noticed another table having to get up and flag down the waiter to be serviced. That sucks. I hope this place works on either their understaffed or inexperienced service staff. First time back since pre-covid. Was always a go-to after my daughters swim class. Came with my parents and daughter today. Service was pretty good still but food may have gone down slightly. My mom had crab cake Benedict and I had eggs Benedict. My moms meal had a whole egg shell hidden in her food, and shortly after I found some little bits and pieces of shell I had bitten into. Vanilla latte was alright but tasted watered down and hot chocolate wasn't hot. Would give it another try at some point down the road to see if they've gotten back to where they used to be. read more

One thing of great concern to us was the red-headed waiter/server who appears to have severe exczema on his hands and arms. We noticed when he brought our lattes that his skin was red, cracked and peeling badly. Then I saw him wiping down tables with a wet washcloth and with a peeling skin, that means everything was getting transferred onto the tables. I feel bad that he has a very obvious skin condition, but from a food sanitation perspective, he really should be wearing gloves. That could get a restaurant in serious trouble with the health department. Please address this. We went on a Sunday for brunch and ordered beignets(1/2 order), bacon, toast and the corned beef hash. The beignets came last, would've expected them first, but they were hot and tasty. Would order them again, but specify we want them first. The corned beef hash potatoes weren't entirely cooked through and had a bit of a crunch. I added some salt to taste. If they ever have the benedict special again made with cauliflower, absolutely order that!! The soy lattes were great - the caffeinated beverages here are always great. read more

I was excited to see this place finally open and thought I would give it a try for lunch. Service = A+++ (checking on me every 5 minutes, SUPER friendly, fast service) Decor = A+ (cute french (y) theme, clean) Atmosphere = B- ( tried to sit on the patio and moved because the bus stop was too noisy and fumy, mostly senior citizens so it didn't feel 'hip', and no wifi) Food taste = D- (no flavor - like at all) I ordered the Messieur (sp?) sandwich and sweet potato fries for lunch. Maybe it was just a poor choice, but it was the 2nd item listed on the sandwich menu so I assumed it was a specialty. I was let down when they brought it out - it looked liked a ham and cheese sandwich on texas toast and tasted like it as well. There was no special flavor infusion like you expect from a french themed restaurant. In fact - it tasted very much like something I would make at home. They also had a dip for it - but it was tasteless. The fries in and of themselves were fine -- but they need an accent sauce for dipping. Dipping sweet potato fries in ketchup never really taste that fantastic. After I begin eating I understood why there were so many senior citizens there -- because the food is just sooooo bland. There are a lot of really great places to eat in Alameda so if they really want to make a go of this place I suggest bringing in a chef that really can oomph up the flavors. Also I would suggest adding wifi. Being so close to campus - if you add wifi, bring in some great tasting lunch specials, and a few coffeehouse mixes - it could become "the place" to go for lunch on that side of the island. Right now though - I'll be surprised if its still open this time next year. I'm going to give it a few months and then I'll go back and try it again. Cafe jolie is a quaint little breakfast spot I go to from time to time. It's cute and French themed. I love what they have done to the patio, just too cute. They added an awning and hung baskets of flowers and strung some lights. It's perfect. Five stars for being my favorite breakfast in Alameda!!!!!***** We went Saturday morning and ran into some friends as we waited for a table for 6. We didn't have a reservation and only waited 15 mins. Super efficient. Our server was Sam and she was very friendly and efficient. Our busser was DJ and he was very attentive. They should make that guy a server too! Kept our coffee and creams full and refilled. Brought water and refilled it and cleared things in a timely and polite manor. Everyone loved their food. I had the Monte cristo and my boyfriend had a burger. Sam was very accommodating to our requests. My bf ordered a very specific burger adding and subtracting condiments. I ordered a side of aioli with my sweet potato fries and it wasn't a problem at all. She was just a really great server. Other things ordered were omelettes and the crab Benny. I tried going back today and I was so disappointed by the rude service I received. They completely messed up my order and did nothing to fix it. I didn't even get an apology. The omelets I had each day were fluffy with fresh fruit, whole grain toast and homemade jam (different kind each day). He had a steak (cooked perfectly) and eggs. I'm not eating flour right now, so I haven't been able to try the lemon ricotta pancakes, french toast, or Monte Cristo sandwich...but I'm going to give in one day soon, because they look delicious! Based on the number of plates with all these items coming out of the kitchen, they must be worth it! The interior is decorated nicely, well lit and a good waitstaff. It was very nice dining outside as the weather was beautiful. Inside for Sunday brunch (the place was packed) got pretty noisy with some crying kids and the music playing on top of a packed hour talking. I live in the neighborhood. Occasional patron of the cafe. Waited 30 mins for a table today but that's normal. What's not normal is that after 35 mins we were still waiting for our food. Another table that came in later got their beignet first. My wife had ordered that too and I had the omelette. Why couldn't they serve us the beignet first also. Definitely frustrating to see another table get it first when they came later. Server is a joke. She was pleasant but her explanation was that she has no control over the kitchen issues. She said the delay was because the kitchen was having problems. She as our main server did not apologize but another younger server who brought our food was apologetic. Cafe Jolie needs to step up! Our group of 4 decided to try this cute cafe for breakfast this morning, despite the 20 minute wait for a table. Once seated, however, we waited an additional 15-20 minutes for someone to come and take our order--which seemed really strange because everyone around us, except us--was receiving service. When someone finally came to take our order, it was a manager who we then saw speaking with the server from our seating section. While our food arrived pretty quickly after our order was finally taken, the server never checked back in with us to see how everything was. Had she done so, we would have had the opportunity to remind her that we'd never received our 4 drink orders. Instead, we later shared this information with the manager, when asking that she please take the drinks off of our bill, which she did quickly and pleasantly. She also apologized for our unpleasant dining experience and generously offered to pay for our 4 meals, which we gratefully thanked her for, but declined. Trying to be fair here, it looked like most of the other patrons were receiving prompt, satisfactory service, and we were just an unfortunate exception to the general rule. We left hoping that the next patrons weren't as unfortunate in their seating assignment as we had apparently been. While we won't return because of this experience, management handled the situation just as they should have, and we were impressed by that. The food was also very tasty. read more

I brought my family here, as requested by my Mom for Mother's day. Our wait was increased because of my Mom's dog, our request for an outside table and a retired couple that took over an hour and a half to leave after their meal. I like that the place is no longer a ran down diner. The decor and ambience is very lively and modern. The staff reminded me a little bit of Berkeley but overall were very helpful and attentive. I will say it did take a moment to pay for our check but that's because another patron's son had noticed my 2.5 month old niece and we were all conversing. We started off with a full order of beignets. I guess I'm like the last person ever to have beignet. Meh, I wasn't impressed with this "fancy" doughnut that was just too dry. It really lacked something to make it pop for me. It came with with a chocolate sauce, powdered sugar and some strawberries. I think if they added some whip cream, then it would probably be better. As for my first experience, I'm just not a fan. The winner of the meal seemed to be my Mom's crab cakes, which she ordered by themselves. I'm not a seafood lover but everyone was "raving" about how good they were. I passed even still and ordered a burger with avocado and bacon. The bun was fresh & good, but a need a good helping of aioli and ketchup to get it going. The meat quality was on above average. I was pleased with my upgraded sweet potatoes but I wouldn't say they're the best I ever ate. I recommend the aioli, as it was very flavorful and a great addition to my meal. -- Mac & Cheese: My Mom also ordered this with her crab cakes. It needed hot sauce which we provided. The problem for me with mac & cheese is that it's always so bland but it was very cheesy. -- Chicken Strips & Fries: I thought the chicken strips were of the variety that had a bit too much breading and were a bit crunchy. I did not care for the fries but my GF and sister liked them but only when they were hot and fresh. -- Chicken burger: My GF ordered this. The aioli helped it as well. It was definitely "healthier" in that it's a chicken burger, but it wasn't anything mind blowing. -- Eggs benedict: My other sister ordered this and was not uberly impressed either. I did not tasted it for myself but the portion size seemed a bit small. I thought the meal was just ok, maybe average. I was looking for a brunch place and had randomly biked by Cafe Jolie one day so we decided to stop in. Cafe Jolie has a nice ambiance, the inside is decorated nicely and there's also outdoor seating in front (good for people watching) and if you have a dog. I will agree with other yelpers that the service needs some improvement. Once seated immediately we had to flag down several workers just to get our waitress. Turns out she was working on another set of diners who ended up leaving since they had waited too long for their coffee. Once we ordered, it didn't take too long to get our food and grab the check. I had the beignets (half size), which was plenty for one person or even to share. They were good, not amazing but it was nice for a light brunch. I also had a side of the potatoes which were not bad. Prices here are reasonable and I like brunch places like Jolie...however I feel with improvement in the food and service, this place could be alot better. Cafe Jolie is pretty standard diner fare but the ambiance and decor is a little more formal and extravagant than just a diner's. Unfortunately, their location makes it hard to find free parking because even the lot behind it charges by the hour. The length of time, which you have to wait for food does become a little bit unbearable too because nobody wants to keep getting up and feeding the meter. With that said, food is ok. Better than your average diner but not as good as a specialty diner. I ordered the Monte Cristo, normally I would be raving about a deep fried cheese sandwich but this one just didn't do it for me. It was good but it wasn't gooey and leaking with cheese the way I'm normally used to. The outer crust was plain and I didn't get any filling in between when I was gnawing off the sides. I'm French and wanted to love this place, but turned out to just like it. Came in on a double date a Saturday at noon and was seated immediately. I ordered some coffee, a salmon omelette and some fruit. All were good but nothing to write Guy Fieri about. Everyone else's meal looked good but again, nothing spectacular. Prices were a little high and service a little slow but Cafe Jolie redeems itself on its really cute Parisian-style decor. read more
