Visiting from Southern Cali & recently back from our touring adventure. Great little neighborhood cafe. We had heard about this place from friends and we spent the night at an inn in the University area. In the morning we drove over to Cafe Lulu. The other couple that joined us, husband is Glutten-Free, Cafe Lulu had some Glutten Free bread-Outstanding. Plus the coffee and the ambiance was just perfect for us. Each morning we drove the 1 1/2 miles to enjoy a cup and a take out cup with us. Wish that something like this place was available down where we frequent. This is a very cozy cafe. Great place to grab a coffee while you wait to get into The Butcher & Baker. The chai they serve is amazing. It's the perfect blend of spicy and sweet. The barista put the perfect amount of velvety foam on it as well. They offer books to read as well which is pretty cool. They close at 2pm. They also serve scrambled eggs and bagels. This place was recently bought by a former customer with no experience in food service or cafe ownership, and man does it show. The exacting standards of the former owner, which made this cafe such a gem, have been lost. Yesterday my order was done wrong --twice!-- without apology or efforts to make it right. It's really not that complicated to make a bagel. If I wanted my food prepared in a crappy manner by a fifteen year old boy (the owner's grumpy son) with no understanding of food safety, I'd just go to McDonald's. I went to Cafe Lulu on a work day morning. They weren't busy, however the person at the counter did not even look at me as I stood there waiting to order....for at least 1 min. They didn't seem to be doing anything besides looking at their phone. Not even an acknowledgement, yet she was standing just on the other side of the counter....I really will never go back just because of this. The other thing is that their self-stamped cups stained my hand blue when it got wet from the rain. Hello? Such a cute little find! This was the perfect cafe for an espresso drink and studying without all the noise and distractions. It's very small but I had no trouble finding space on a Sunday morning. The barista was very friendly and the coffee was good. Everything about it was just simple and nice. They had some yummy looking food like squash bread and egg bagel sandwiches which I will probably try next time. OK...Love Cafe Lulu. We used to live up the street, but moved to a bigger place in phinney. But we could never find a better place so we keep coming back. Coffee.. I rarely get drip, unless it is good... It's good. Pastries... They have changed over time but we can normally find something to our taste. Atmosphere..Super friendly. It probably helps to be a long time customer, but they always seem to be upbeat. Advice...Get in early. By 10 or 11 on weekends the selection of food has been depleted..If you are picky get in early. read more

I do what I can to support local businesses and given that Cafe Lulu is in my new hood, I was looking forward to a long-term relationship with their coffee and baked goods. On my first visit I was greeted by a scowl from the barista..."how dare you bother me" was written all over her face. Fighting off the urge to leave, I ordered an Americano and not once did the barista make eye contact with me or utter a word despite my being the only one in the place. To top it off, I wasn't thanked by her upon paying. I decided to give the place one more chance so a few days later I got pretty much the same treatment from a different barista. I don't need to be sucked up to but cripes, how about at least a thank-you and dare I suggest some eye contact and maybe a hello. I recommend not going here unless you're one of those sorts that equates bad vibes with quality. read more

Pros: -Small enough that it feels cozy and its easy to ask the barista to watch your stuff while you go to the bathroom. -It's near Greenlake, though not as close as some of the other coffee shops. -Good latte -Friendly, nice owner Cons: -Small enough that if its crowded it feels claustrophobic -Closes at 2 or 3pm everyday -The stools at the bar up front are wayyyy too high. I'm short so I don't know how anyone taller than me could sit comfortable. It wasn't comfortable. There's probably only about 2 seats in there I would be happy sitting in. read more

Good coffee and a wide selection of pastries, bagels and granola. A small shop which gets a little claustrophobic as many neighborhood groups seem to settle hear virtually every time I come in. But the staff is pleasant and coffee is tasty! read more

I really want to like this place. It's so close to my house and super convenient near the highway entrance. That being said, the ladies behind the counter are simply not friendly. The lady with the brown curly hair does not make eye contact, never says hello and never says goodbye. However, I am always pleased when she is running the register as she does not know how to make lattes. The blond making the coffee is nice enough--nothing to put a smile on my face. On those mornings when I'm running late, and don't have time to make my own latte, I pop in here as it's on my way to work. But I always feel bad and guilty after wards. Sigh, read more

Great coffee and a fresh, well planned menu. Good parking for the hop-in/hop-out customer and there's usually an open seat with friendly people nearby. Meh. I went on a weekday around noon, and not much was going on at this café. They have interesting-sounding coffee drinks but not a lot of teas or other drinks. If you need a deserted place with WiFi, try it out! If you want to enjoy a café scene, this is not the place. read more

WOW, a short lived disappointing experience. I would rate the coffee but wasn't even given the chance. I walked in with my two brothers and girlfriend, thirsty for coffee and looking forward to giving Cafe LuLu a try. Instead, we were greeted by a rude and unwelcoming barista who acted like I just interrupted her in the middle of something more important than our business. She seemed too busy handling paperwork to care whether or not we were taken care of. I asked for drip , she said, "sorry ran out." Then proceeds to say, " I could offer you an americano, BUT I'm closing in ten minutes." Well then.. Guess I'm taking my coffee needs somewhere else! Would NOT recommend unless I'm greeted with a barista that actually WANTS my business. Hopefully that wasn't the owner, if so. OUCH. read more

Our 'third place' for many years now. It's not just a coffee shop; it's a community. The coffee and breakfast items are always excellent. Karen (the owner) & team are always friendly and accommodating. Lulu is a place where you can find yourself running late on a weekday because you got caught up in a conversation, then another, and another. At least one day each weekend has to start with catching up with the Lulu gang, too; it doesn't feel right without it. Karen has done an extraordinary job of not just building a coffee shop; she fosters a community. There's a reason some customers have been daily regulars for 10+ years here. I really like this place, they are nice. The egg bagels are good, I don't come here often, but a few times a year and year after year. But it could use a bit of a cleaning. The bathroom could use a good f***ing scrub. But the second that there isn't a line out the door folks are on their phones. If you have time to lean, you have time to clean.
