Had a great time 5 years ago with my husband and our dogs. The staff is obviously not happy (worked in service) and got charged $40 for a double drink. Yes, I ordered it and expected top shelf, as my bartender promised. Horrible and she even has the audacity to make up a name of a tequila. After waiting what felt like an entire episode of a slow-burn drama just for basic service, we were practically ready to clock out ourselves. The server seemed to have mastered the art of disappearing, reappearing only after an hour when we had no choice but to bolt for a business meeting--because, apparently, the concept of timing doesn't exist here. And let's not forget the spicy guacamole incident. Came in on a chilly day because we saw flyers for an $8 soup of the day special and we were excited to have some hot soup. I was not impressed. First, the ceiling fans were on even though it was 50 degrees outside so it was cold. The soup was also just a small cup and $8 just seemed like a regular price. The soup was pretty good but really was just a chicken soup, and the dirty rice on the side was dry and tasted a bit burnt. We also got a mango margarita and it was not worth $15. It came in a plastic cup and was super weak. I'm pretty sensitive to alcohol but I didn't feel anything drinking it. One star is being generous and because I have no choice but to add it. Stopped by this restaurant during Day of the Dead parade and celebrate my birthday. What a mistake. She wasn't slow, she just completely forgot about us. When we got seated inside, we were literally the only occupied table in our section. There were 5 tables around us empty. Our server came, took our drink orders and we put in an order of nachos to start. We got our drinks and nachos along with chips and salsa. Everything was going great. While eating the nachos the tables around us were suddenly filled with other families. Our server went to all those tables and took their orders, brought their food and kept walking by our table completely disregarding the fact our drinks were empty, our nacho plate was clean and we had been ready to order the main dish for what felt like hours. When we finally called her attention and even commented on the fact she had forgotten about us, she simply said "oh no I'm just busy". Okay... not that busy to take care of everyone else around us. We put our main order in and we hadn't even gotten our food yet when all the tables around us were empty once again. Everything took so long we weren't even hungry by the time the food arrived. We don't typically complain at restaurants and we weren't planning on complaining. While waiting for the to go box, after paying for everything, the manager came to check in on us and we had to share this horrible experience. He was so ashamed he pulled our ticket and said he would give us a discount even though we insisted it wasn't about the money. You don't expect a huge amount from some of these super touristy locations, but unfortunately there was a lot of room for improvement. We were walking on the river walk and unlike most places, Cafe Ole did not have a wait so we decided to stop by. The view from the patio was great, as we could see the boats float by. They had many alcoholic drinks to choose from and the drink I got tasted pretty good. Unfortunately, I don't remember what it was called and it's not listed on their website. Kiddos had pizza, and hubby and I grabbed some Mexican food. It was kind of expensive, so I would have expected it to be better, especially being on the river walk, but it was just okay. If you want a place with nice decor, good views, and good drinks, this is a good place to go. I would just recommend eating elsewhere first though if you want that true Tex Mex flavor. read more

We were seated directly under a TV, directly next to a large group of loud people, and there was a band in the other room. Needless to say, I couldn't hear a thing other than background noise. The server seemed friendly, but since I couldn't hear a word she said, this opinion is based purely on her body language. I ordered steak fajitas and they were not good. The meat had little flavor, was tough, and the veggies were also pretty bland. The side of queso we ordered was pretty boring and very yellow. Was it awful? No. Was it very touristy? Yes. We stumbled across this place while walking the river in the beautiful weather. The wait was literally minutes at noon. Our waitress was quick and attentive. The menu was traditional Tex mex with American kids menu thrown in. The prices were great too! My picky teen got tacos and fries, myself and my other son ordered the cheese enchiladas. Perfection! Hot and cheesy and very tasty. The chips and hot sauce were a nice start to the meal. As others had commented, the hot sauce is kinda spicy for those with a tame pallet but still so good! I missed the signs of not seeing anyone sitting at the bar at noon on a Saturday which was a bad sign. Nevertheless I ordered the "Ultimate Ole Rita" which was delivered within 30 seconds. Normally I would be impressed with such speedy delivery of alcohol until I saw them pour my margarita from a dispenser fountain over ice. This place is very okay. I have been twice now and it isn't bad but certainly not the best or most authentic Mexican food on the river or in San Antonio in general. There is very limited options for food but just like most places on the River Walk it's more for the drinks than food. They are home to the 60oz margarita which I had with a friend about a year ago and was amazing. This trip I got the smaller prickly pear margarita and it was not as good, a little watered down but still yummy. I got the chicken flautas and they were decent, they were not greasy which happens sometimes. The queso is not good but the salsa is spectacular so I would recommend going for quac or skipping out on the extra dips. I would give the food 2 starts but our server, Dean, was fantastic. He was so kind and welcoming. He even gave my in-laws a free bowl of ice cream because we were celebrating their anniversary. So he definitely made the experience better. I'm not sure that we really did anything with it but we did have a lot of fun sitting outside and enjoying the atmosphere. The food was ok. It wasn't really anything special. Our waiter was great and had some great suggestions for future places to eat in the area. The drinks came out way too strong so our waiter nicely brought us some sprite to water them down. We were there late (it actually closed as we finished up and left) and he mentioned having to find a bartender who could make our drinks but it was definitely an unusual situation. It was just something off their menu so I was surprised when it came out as mostly alcohol instead of a mix like we expected. But oh well. It was a fun experience.
