Had a pretty good time here with some of my friends when we came here to watch the giants game and drink some beer. Right when you walk in you realize that this place is heaven if you're into billiards, which is always a fun to play when drinking with friends. Came here on a Saturday night and our party of 10 enjoyed it. Some of us played pool while some of us played darts. The facility is big, with a lot of pool tables. Nice high ceilings, so the room felt open and not stuffy. The building is nice and new too. They have a two sided full bar in the center and they also have a kitchen where you can order hot food and snacks. Would definitely come back here again. Restrooms: Separate restrooms for men and women. The women's restroom only has two stalls. It was clean and stocked. read more

Went there yesterday to play & had a great time. Was a great place to watch the Warriors game as well. People & staff were very friendly despite how busy it was. Tables were very nice, the place was clean, & I didnt feel like it was a dive atmosphere (although it was just as fun). This is a new location, & feels like it lacks some of the character of their old spot, so I hope they end up putting some decor on some of their stark white walls. The new Broken Rack is great. It seemed more spacious and well ventilated. I only came here to watch the SF Giants win the NLCS. But knowing that it wasn't that crowded, this will be my spot to watch the World Series. read more

I went to the Broken Rack recently to grab dinner and watch a Warriors basketball game. The place is huge with a ton of pool tables. The services was a little slow but the bartender and waitress were nice. I like it there...but its nothing to write home about. There is a small "lounge" area with a big screen TV and a few couches to watch the game away from all of the activity. read more

Nice watering hole. It's really close to the Amtrak station and very easy to get to. Met a regular and heard from him that the Broken Rack had just moved to this new location from a smaller location on the other side of the train tracks. The buildout is awesome. There's a small parking lot adjacent to the building and a good amount of street parking as well. The bartender immediately learned my name and made sure my beer was full. I ordered the deep fried pickles and jalapeños which came with a nice sauce that wasn't too spicy. The pickles and jalapeños had good flavor and were seasoned just right. The Irish fries were great as well. The Irish fries were made with criss cut fries which were much more crisp than the ones you find at Chick-fil-a. But hey, I'm a fan of both! Plenty of pool tables and a menu worth exploring. I also am impressed with their liquor selection. This is a place I will definitely come back to when I'm in the area. read more

I've been here a few times with friends and always had a great time. This last time was a little different. We walked in and waited for someone to ring us up for a table. I asked the one of the guys in the front where to pay and he annoyingly pointed to the bartender. So I went and asked the bartender and she instructed me to go to the front where I originally was standing. I head back to the front and the same guy didn't move from his spot and rang us up. *pretty confused* Did we interrupt him during something important like watching Netflix? IDK. Anyways, it wasn't even 5 seconds before we realized he was being extremely rude to our group. His tone of voice was condescending and it pretty much killed my excitement and mood. It was to the point that it was so obvious that it got awkward and my friends and I were just looking at each other. I'm not sure why this person was so grumpy when we only asked a few questions. It was so weird because I've never experienced this before. If it wasn't for the cool, chill space - I probably wouldn't come here again because of this guy. Came here on a Thursday night for the first time with my boy who said we should come to this place after work. We thought they closed at 2 a.m. but when we got there at 12:30 a.m., the manager basically said they were closing an hour early because it was slow so we couldn't get a table but we were able to get a drink. Fast-forward two days and we're back with 2 of our other friends Saturday night around 11 pm. The place was packed compared to Thursday night but there were some open tables here and there with a few open seats at the bar. So we are waiting in line to pay for a table or try to (again, this was our first time going to a pool bar) and once its our turn the manager says he'll be right back. About 5 mins later he comes back and just puts my name on a list and says it'll be about an hour. The problem was that when my friend and I came the first time on Thursday, he was so abrasive when he spoke to us. He told us "you know I'm not gonna get you a table right?" twice with such an unwelcoming vibe that when it came to picking a place to go Saturday night we almost didn't come back. I feel like you should give a new customer a reason to want to come back to your establishment especially when we had no idea that they would be closing early. The second time we came I felt like he could've just told us it would be an hour wait for a table before leaving for 5 mins and having us sit there like he's going to help us when he got back. Plus there were at least 5 open tables but we don't know how pool halls work so who knows. Either way we won't be coming back here again. Everything and everyone else seemed cool but man that manager was such a buzzkill. Edit: I see the hours say this place closes at 1:00 a.m. on Thursday. The door said they closed at 2:00 am which is what we were going by but I guess we should've checked Yelp for accuracy. read more

This is a kool Bar it's has a lot of sitting outside upstairs and downstairs, but it fells up quickly during basketball games, and other sporting events when most people like to hang out at bars. The food changes ever few months, but every time I've went the food was pretty good for a bar. It's a pretty chill place with a nice atmosphere especially for downtown Oakland. I've given this place so many chances to get it right, but it's just not going to happen. I've never had worse service, consistently. I come in during lunch on the weekdays and try to have a beer and some food. It is hard to get anyone to acknowledge me even. Today was the last straw. I walk in, ask for a beer and a menu. Get the beer and then spend 15 minutes waiting for someone to take my order, or even give me eye contact. I gave up and left went somewhere else for lunch. I was surprised when I found out a social was planned here (via place I was interviewing at) since it didn't seem like a food driven place. Their specialty is of course pool but we only had the food so this review is based on that and service. There was a large party of about 12-14 of us in the back room. Our waitress had a lot of trouble remembering our orders which would be understandable had they been really busy but we were the only large party and if anyone else playing pool ordered food, I'm pretty sure it wasn't at the same level. So for her to forget several orders and take about an hour for the food to come out was mind boggling. When we reminded her of the missing items, she checked her notepad and she HAD written it down just forgot (I guess?). The food itself was ok. I ordered the veggie burger and waffle fries. The patty was stiff and the cheese I ordered on it was missing (womp womp) but after the slow, spotty service there was no way I was going to ask about it- better to just give up at that point. I just moved in across the street and so glad to have this place close by. Very friendly staff who is always welcoming and polite. Pool tables, darts, fooseball, TV, food, and beer....what more can you ask for. I have always been able to get a pool table when I stop in after work or on the weekends which has been nice. I have tried the burgers, wings, and mozzarella sticks which have all been really good and priced well. Wasn't the biggest fan of the fried pickles/jalapeños though. On the fluke my husband and I stopped by here for a few drinks on one of our date nights and I'd have to say that we enjoyed the atmosphere, strong drinks Karma and the ability to just hang out and spend time with each other in a nice atmosphere. Put your name on the waiting list ASAP if you want to shoot pool or play darts because if someone occupies it for too long you just may not get a table. But if you're out on a date and just want to sit and have a drink and talk with loved ones or it with a group of friends having a good night out this is a great spot. read more

The Broken Rack is a great choice of your looking to play some pool, drink, catch a game or just have some fun. There's an ample amount of pool tables for the billiards shark in all of us, and they offer a nice bar to accompany their menu. The inside has pool tables sprawled all about, and they offer very reasonable prices to play. They provide a well lit and secure parking lot, and offers a pleasant environment for billiards and being social. It's in a good location in close proximity to all major highways and BART, and seems to attract a nice, diverse crowd. The staff is generally friendly and helpful. They also have a decent menu, especially for a pool hall LOL. I was surprised by the food quality the few times I ordered from there, and I have no complaints about their bar's selection. All in all, I would strongly suggest The Broken Rack if you're looking for good times and pool. read more

Yes as a business owner you have the right to service whom you so choose, but it was the matter in which you bar manager took his actions. The other customer was talking and the 2 staff ignored me, didn't say hello, just kept talking even though I was in front of the male bartender. After about 1-2 minutes another customer gave the lady a bill folder and she took it, looked at me, and kept talking to the guy sitting at the bar. A minute or so later, some guy went to the front register and gave the pool balls back and the guy with long hair helped him out, came back and started talking to the guy while the lady watched. I politely asked if I were going to be served or not or if I needed to go to the register to order a drink, and the guy with long hair looked at me rolled his eyes and gave a rude noise from his breath and said that they were "busy dealing with a missing staff" and it was "more important to deal with this than to serve me a drink" and I said, "wow" and the he said "you don't need to be rude" and I was taken aback. I replied that I only asked if I were to be served or should I still wait. He put on his psychologist hat and had the nerve to call me "passive aggressive" and so I asked how it was passive aggressive when I was ignored and he said he didn't see me, though he saw everyone else, then proceeded to call me rude. I told him that it was rude to be ignored and having to ask for service then being told he didn't see me and being called passive aggressive. He said I had no compassion. I said that though it's bad there's a missing person who worked there, it's not really my business and he should not have told me as it was not my concern, though I felt bad. I even told him the days before I was at a funeral for someone who died and yet, would people there care? No. They have nothing to do with that, just like I have nothing to do with the dead person form the Broken Rack. Seriously, I feel bad, but it's not something that should have affected me as a customer. In the end, we are people, and crap happens, but if you're in the service industry, you should still be professional to those not directly involved in a bad or sad thing, and only tell us if it will directly affect being serviced. If so, then go home and don't be at work as nobody wants a Debbie Downer or a Delusional Doug. As such, I quickly called my colleagues and we decided to change venue to a more appropriate and happy place and to which they will serve us! Seriously, why would you tell me that someone from your bar is missing and that it's too important, more important than to serve me? Also, he served two other people BEFORE me, even though I had been waiting there first! In the end, I told him that we will never, ever go there again, and I would tell my friends/colleagues not to come anymore and started walking out. He stated, "I won't serve you." Our go-to place for pool, beer and garlic fries with tons of garlic on top. Twenty or so tables that were newly recovered a month ago. Check out the lower prices in the afternoon. Easy parking adjacent to the building though use Waze or Google maps to get into the out-of-way side street. read more

I liked that it's well-lit, but not bright; spacious, but not cavernous; and buzzing, but not blaringly loud. I just moved here and decided to explore restaurants nearby that I could walk to on foot from my apartment. I tried two different restaurants but they were closed until 4:30pm (it was 2:30pm), so by default, I went to The Broken Rack. First I ordered a hamburger and beer which I thoroughly enjoyed. I then played about 2.5 hours of pool and hit some sweet spot during the day where games are cheaper and happy hour just began. I was there for about 3 hours and I absolutely loved it. The music and vibe were great, and it wasn't overly crowded with people (but it's obvious people love the place). The bartender Patrick was awesome and seemed to be a jack of all trades. He also took my food orders and got me set up for playing pool. He was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Another thing I must note is how CLEAN the place is. Cleanliness is the first thing I see wherever I go. This was one of the cleanest and well-kept establishments I have ever seen. This is an awesome spot and is going to be my go-to spot to spend a few hours in the afternoons. Everyone was so friendly, and I had a lot of fun. I would definitely recommend this place for old school players, dates, or just having fun. You won't feel out of place no matter what. read more
