This one star is going to not make sense at first, but please read completely. See, I ate by myself and had okay service, a good sandwich, and a generally fine experience albeit forgettable. I'd say go right down Spring street to Ruby's or Balaboosta, or Peasant on Elizabeth - you'll be much happier and feel the meal was actually worth the cost... My 1 star review is because it was EXCRUCIATING to watch the treatment of the table a few feet from me. Three women were ignored for close to an hour. After placing their order I felt their slow sense of "did they forget us" settle in. To me, it was obvious they were just being ignored. Still, they waited patiently. I felt my frustration as a bystander was outpacing theirs. They tried to delicately hail their server, who seemed to enjoy gazing through them, although the restaurant was largely empty. I hate to assume the worst in people, but it's hard not to think their server somehow took pleasure in making them wait. When their server FINALLY went to the table she wasn't apologetic in the slightest. In fact, I heard her say to them, "well you didn't say anything." ... And here is where I was shocked!!! When the waitress came back to them, all she brought them was wine. Apparently they didn't even order food!!! At this point it was hard not to say something myself. But, I bit my tongue because I didn't feel it was my place. The three women remained polite, finished their wine and left. I really hope they didn't leave a tip... And it's impossible not to point out the fact that I'm white, and they were not... I definitely won't be eating here again. There seems to be a big shortage of coffee in this restaurant. On a consistent basis, it has taken 20+ minutes between asking for coffee and actually getting it. I've been here a few times, have always thought it was average to ok, but cool ambience. However I just had the worst lunch experience i've had in this city. First off the food took about 30 minutes to get to our table, people sat down, ate, and left in the time it took for us to receive our food. I ordered the 'truffle' burger, no truffle taste, instead I got a damp bun, a dry overcooked and small paddy making up what was one of the worst burgers i've ever had. Drawn in by the lighting and fun looking atmosphere. Turned out to be super hipster and pretentious. The door greater was grade A hipster douche wearing weird leather chap pants. Just stood there and didn't make eye contact or smile at all. The server was quite knowledgeable and recommended wines and foods. Solid place for brunch, if you like Rösti (Swiss hash browns) which they serve with most dishes. I had the special of the day (Rösti with ham, gruyere and an egg) and it was good. Nate (tall and blonde) took great care of us the other day for brunch and every other waiter showed the same consistency as he did. I used to go to the Select cafe every time i come to NYC. It's been more than 10 years that i have been going there alone or with friends or family. I really appreciate this cafe for the atmosphere and the apple strudeI and i have always been welcomed and well treated. Except today, a young brunette hostess i have never seen before welcome people in front of me. But when came my turn, she ignored me. I said hello to her a few times before she looked down on me like i was an intruder. As a journalist for a national french newspapers, i will write a very review if this hostess is still working there or if she has not change her attitude. A chaque fois que je viens à NY, c'est-à-dire 2 fois par an, je me prends toujours 1 h pour aller manger leur strudel à la pomme et apprécie l'ambiance conviviale du lieu. J'ai toujours été bien reçu par tous les serveurs(es) toujours souriants et poli(e)s. Sauf aujourd'hui où une jeunette brune que je n'ai jamais m'ignore comme si j'étais un intrus. Me and my girlfriend went to this place randomly one evening about a week ago and thought to give it a try. It was our first time there. We didn't know what to expect & first impressions are very important. They didn't have any seating in the front dining area , so the hostess walked us to the far back hidden area which had a separate waitress and bar. The waitress was extremely rude. I'm not sure why she had an attitude? we were very polite. We ordered burgers and a couple of drinks. The waitress dropped the bill on the floor after we asked for it and didn't pick it up. The big kicker here is that she added a 20% gratuity on a party of 2!!! I asked her about what the extra charge was and she said it was the tip. Little did she know I grew up in the resturaunt business and also was a waitress and bartender for a good 15 years of my life , so I'm very familiar with the service industry. I know what good service is and I know that you can't add gratuity to a bill unless it's for parties of 6 or more at most restaurants. On our way out I asked the hostess if it's common for the waitress to add a 20% gratuity to a party of 2 and she said "No" she also apologized for our horrible experience, I told her how we were treated. The hostess was the highlight of this whole experience and that's why i gave it 1 star, she offered us two drinks on the house to try and make our experience a little better. She apparently understands customer service and how to treat people. The hostess should get a raise and the waitress in the back should find a new job. My girlfriend and I were still bothered by the experience and will never return here. First impressions are everything! read more

Looks good from the outside...inside... at least there is a steady stream of beautiful people coming in...and turning right back around from the "back room". Food is bland, bland. Wine was actually sour. Anyway, if the back room is such a secret (you have to go through the kitchen)-why is it advertised on every table. This place has a great bartenders, however the Worst management. I got very sick from eating there and first the management didn't call me back, then refused to offer me any compensation for me being sick for my food. They stated the owner would call me back and then I waited over two weeks and he didn't. It is a cute and a great hangout and I am sad I will not be going back and not just because of being sick because of the outrageous RUDE BEHAVIOR OF MANAGEMENT. read more

I give one star because I cannot give zero. I went to dinner here last night with my wife and it was horrible. We ordered wine which came quickly and also two soups. Simple. After 45 minutes the soups did not come. Our waitress was nice and apologized but I wanted to talk to the manager. I saw her talk to him but he did not come to talk to me which makes me more angry and I am still waiting for my soup. I ask again and still I see him and he walks by me and ignores me 4,5 times. Not because he is busy but because I see that a table in the window is his friends. WORST dining experience ever. Ordered fondue and they gave me 2 carrot pieces, 2 thin slices of potato and mini pickles for dunking and stale bread for $26. The staff walked me through a dirty kitchen to a back table on arrival where it was dark, no windows and loud music. When the bill came and they told me it was cash only. It is not displayed anywhere. The staff was rude. When I was leaving (I couldn't leave fast enough), the manager was literally pushing a drunk homeless man out of the front door of the restaurant. Service is so incredibly terrible. The host is a rude and pretentious...person. There are so many other fun terrible things I would rather call him, but I don't know if Yelp would allow it. Why would I not know? Because I have never written a Yelp review in my life!!!! I work in the service industry, and I know first hand what some people can say. Customers can be terrible as well, so I can accept that if someone has a bad experience maybe they can also be at fault. My friend and I kept saying: thank you, please, sorry, do you mind if? All we were met with was silence from the waiter, eye rolls, and the constant glare of host's cell phone as he continued to roll his eyes some more. He was the worst! Food was great, and the runners were super accommodating and sweet. But get a grip and seriously remind your staff that they are working in the hospitality industry. It takes just as much energy to be a complete jerk to someone as it does to smile and help them out. It's important. It's what brings people back to your place. The denim clad, angry, text messaging host is the reason I will never, EVER, come back to Cafe Select again. read more
