Stopped by this place on our way back to LA for Mother's Day brunch and because we saw the glowing reviews. I feel bad for leaving such a terrible review but this place completely ruined Mother's Day for us. First, they gave us about 40-45min wait for the food once ordered. The food came over 1 hour later! We weren't even the exception, a table behind us waited at lease 1.5 hours for their food after being given the same estimate as us (45min). Now I understand that it's a holiday weekend and it's extra busy, but I feel that lying to people about how long food will take is not great for business. Once we and the other table complained we weren't given any explanation beyond "sorry, it's busy, nothing we can do". Super unprofessional. Now about the food, it was decent at best. The avocado toast was super bland, my daughter who never complains about avocado toast couldn't finish it. The only really good thing we tried was the vegan burrito, the rest of the items were decent but not great! Also, they served us the dessert (pie with whipped cream on top) immediately in 90 degree heat which lead to it getting unpleasantly warm while we waited for our food. Unique and charming gem of a spot to settle for a sense of city and community. Nice retail options near POS from local artists plus everything is absolutely delish. They have dishes here you can't get elsewhere, too! Perfect spot that anchors downtown and the revamp going on around here. Will be back regularly! Came by today to check out this new cafe in town -- see what the hype is all about. So glad I came. Waited about 7-10 minutes in line, and then waited another 10-15 minutes for my Iced chai latte $4.56 to arrive (as a to-go order). They sure are busy! Granted it was lunch hour, but still -- haha. My ice chai latte was fabulous; heavy on the ice though. Next time, I want to try some of their sandwiches or breakfast/lunch items. They are all priced around $9-11 each. Seating is plentiful inside the cafe + patio seating is available right under the sun. May be good for them to invest in some sun-shade big umbrellas for the outside, so people can sit and not get burnt. :) Lookin' forward to coming back again! My friend from Bakersfield recommended this cafe and it did not disappoint! As soon as I walked in I knew the place was going to be good, they have so much to offer it was hard choosing between the coffee drinks, pies, sweet/savory foods. I got an iced mocha, Greek eggs, and a Nutella toast. It was all delicious but the Greek eggs were the best eggs I've ever had!! I don't normally go to Bakersfield but now whenever I drive past the town to go to SoCal I will make sure to stop by. Staff was friendly & attentive. We stopped here with the hopes of finding a nice light lunch spot and weren't disappointed. Some of the highlights include extremely amicable staff, great food presentation, and a nice place to eat outside. Specifically, I would rate it as follows: Service: 5/5 - each one of the staff members was happy and helpful, and they even provided an extra tea at no extra cost. It was a fast casual, take a number and sit down kind of place, but the staff nonetheless treated it like a restaurant, clearing our plates in a timely manner and keeping the place in tip top shape despite the high turnover. Atmosphere: 5/5 - the place had multiple seating areas, all of which were comfortable, and the clientele made the cafe take on a sort of hybrid coffee shop/hipster restaurant vibe. The bathrooms were clean, and the water was available to refill from inside. No complaints here. Food: 3.75/5 - don't get me wrong, the presentation was exquisite, but both the tuna sandwich and avocado smash were a little off. The former had a strong fish taste (more than expected) and the latter didn't taste exactly like avocado, instead being overpowered by the pumpkin seeds. The side of olives was fairly underwhelming, consisting of 3 olives and a mini pickle. The side salad was average. However, the grilled cheese was absolutely amazing! Great coffee and cute café in Bakersfield! We were staying in the area during our trip to Kings Canyon & Sequoia national park and came here for coffee and light breakfast a couple times. I'm not quite sure how I missed reviewing Café Smitten, but apparently I had! Smitten has been my go-to place for coffee when I'm not on the go. Sure, you can grab a to-go cup, but half the fun of this place is to sit and enjoy their meticulously curated ambiance and a cappuccino out of a porcelain - and not paper! - cup. First, the ambiance - this is not your typical Bakersfield establishment. While I absolutely think Bakersfield is getting more hip by the day, Smitten pulls off some of the trendiest looks without looking like an imposter. They've got the reclaimed wood, the farmhouse chic, the succulent plants, and the matte paints down. This isn't a DIY project that gets close - they clearly planned their marketing very well and knocked it out of the park. The oasis like patio in the back, with the now functional beer taps, is the cherry on top. Next up - coffee! From rich espressos served with seltzer water like any posh LA or NYC café, to simple, sweetened lattes, Smitten consistently cranks out great coffee. My personal favorite is the always simple, but always comforting, cappuccino, which comes served with a mini shortbread biscuit. I've tried some of their teas, and have to say I appreciate the availability of flavored, unsweetened iced teas on hot summer days. Moving on to the food, I tend to stick to bakery case items with my cappuccino. The baked goods are from a local bakery, and I'm partial to the scones. Flavors rotate seasonally, with the maple being my favorite. When I'm not stopping in for a coffee and sweet treat, my tried and true dish has turned into the quinoa bowl. It's a perfect lunch bowl that feels indulgent while still providing a meal your mother would be proud you ate. The bed of quinoa topped with feta, tomatoes, squash, kale, and a fried egg is full of flavor and protein without being overly heavy. A small, but subtle nod to Smitten's knowledge of food is that every time I've had this dish it has been served with massaged kale (basically raw kale with olive oil rubbed in to tenderize it). This is a must-do to really make kale shine, and in doing so, Smitten really sets themselves apart. I give Smitten 5 stars for service. While I have observed that they are sometimes the victim of their own success with long lines to order, I've never myself struggled to get food brought out in a timely fashion. On one occasion I've left because there wasn't any seating, but I won't hold that against them. I'm hoping their new location that's under development may ease some of that crowding. The servers themselves have always seemed to be aware that the crowded conditions inside can be hard for some customers, and I've had staff point out tables that would fit our group more comfortably, as well as try to expedite a dish when I was in a hurry. Smitten has become my must stop with out of town family familiar with the area, simply because it embodies all the Bakersfield can be. It brings the big city chic to the Central Valley, with the food and drink to back it up. read more

This was our first time here. We selected this place based on the photos. The food looked delicious. When we got there is was clean, spacious yet packed at the same time. In other words it was busy and you can tell its the go to place. We order two orders of Avocado toast which came with a salad and egg. My husband ordered his sunny side, while I ordered mine scrambled on the side. The salad was good, fresh and flavorful. Not sure what kind of dressing it was but it was great and not too heavy. Been to this cafe several times for brunch and for studying! It's become so popular that I don't recommend for intensive studying bc it can get loud and busy, but for meeting someone for coffee and for brunch/lunch it is perfect! The baristas and workers are all so friendly. The owner is so friendly and he even helped me with my WiFi issue. Everything on the menu is delicious you can't go wrong. The outside is really cute and hip. Everything inside is decorated very adorably with cute plants. I highly recommend the earl grey pie that they recently starting serving, Moroccan eggs which are so savory and flavorful, and also the avocado smash. I thought this place was the cutest! It was perfect for what we were looking for. Something to eat that wasn't too big and a nice cold iced coffee. I ordered a decaf iced latte which was delicious. My dad ordered a nitro cold brew and added almond milk and stevia which he loved. He ordered a breakfast burrito and I got a bagel with egg and cheese and both were delicious. The breakfast burrito came with a side of olives and mini pickle and they were also both yummy. The water they had tasted like it had lemon in it and it was perfect for me because I was dehydrated and wanted some water. I will definitely be coming back and trying more of their options of coffee and food. read more

I passed through Bakersfield driving back from a trip to Las Vegas and decided to stop at Cafe Smitten for a quick bite to eat. Initially, I was impressed by the high ratings for this establishment, but after dining here, I have to disagree with vast majority of the reviews. To start, I ordered the soup of the day, which was a tomato bisque served with a slice of bread, and the mushroom omelette for my main entree. The tomato bisque tasted pretty good and came out hot, which is always a plus for me. The soup was what pushed me to give a 3 star reviews rather than 2 stars. However, the mushroom omelette was not great. It lacked seasoning and tasted like something I could easily whip up in 5-10 minutes at home. In addition, the tomato cucumber salad it came with was very bland, and I also didn't care for the side of olives and pickles. The food is also on the expensive side for what you get. Overall, I was disappointed by my experience here, and unfortunately for me, Cafe Smitten did not live up to its high Yelp ratings. read more

I have gone here for once a week, sometimes more, to do school work for the past month. The staff are always so friendly and everything is very neat. Let me start off by saying, I love tomato bisque soup. So, I know how hard it is to find tasty, filling tomato bisque soup. Cafe Smitten has the best I've ever tried at a restaurant, or in their case, a small, adorable cafe. If you're looking for a lighter meal, the soup itself is served with bread. Great for dunking! If you're like me and need some meat with every meal, you can order their Schnitzel Strips that are my all time faves or if you're feeling extra bready, you can order the Schnitzel Sandwich. It's seriously the best when you dunk it in the tomato bisque soup. Whether or not I sound like I'm violating the heck out of tomato bisque, it's my go-to comfort meal. Long story short, it's delicious and the atmosphere makes it 100 times better. The staff is oober nice too. P.S. I'm a dunker. Those tiny, little cookies they serve with their coffee are even more amazing if you dunk them in the coffee and eat them a little soggy. You can thank me later. read more

Loved this place. I hope to revisit if I am traveling again. Staff was very pleasant. I am picky with my coffee and they had great coffee. Everything looks visually stimulating and it taste divine. Food was also fantastic!! My husband ordered the waffle and gave it 9 stars, which is his highest rating~ They have an outdoor patio area with heat lamps which we wanted to sit but there were other occupants. The indoors felt very comfortable and nostalgic with brick walls and barn doors (you can read about this on one of their initial construction photos). On our way out, we grabbed a freshly made peanut butter cookie - yum!!! Next time I will try one of their fresh made pies. read more

Had lunch today with my husband and daughter. They have even expanded the patio are out front. There is both lot parking and street parking. I love the decor and atmosphere and staff is always friendly. The outside patio is so cute. I highly recommend this place for good clean food. I had the portabello sandwich and the cauliflower with tahini. Both were so good, the brocolli was crispy, and the sandwhich was tasty and both portions are a great size. I have been meaning to try this place for like a year and finally dragged my husband with me to try the Moroccan eggs before our movie downtown. I was pretty happy with them! I have never had anything like it but all the pictures were really speaking to me. We asked for extra bread and none of the other sides and it was perfect to soak up the rest of the sauce. I probably would not get them again, because there are other things I really want to try and the sauce has a slight bit of something I didnt particularly love, but I can't put my finger on it. It may be that I expected it to be a smidge more sweet than it was. I also got the maple spice latte to go with an extra shot. Sadly, I am not a fan. It almost tastes like old coffed or burnt, not really much sweetness to it like most lattes (and I like mine on the less sweet side). One of my favorite things to do is try espresso concoctions at local joints, but I feel like this fell sort. The decor and vibe were nice and I enjoyed it but my husband wasn't as comfortable. He really isn't into the hipster vibe. Overall, 4 worthy. I would go again to try different things, but I will not be dying to go back like I am some other places downtown. read more

I am still loving this spot - I visit almost every time I head into Bakersfield, whether it's for lunch or just for a beverage. My favorite is still the vegan portabella sandwich, with the vegan burrito at a close second. For a drink, you can't go wrong with their matcha latte (note- it's a bit on the sweeter side). They seem to run out of the vegan baked goods rather quick; the few times I got them, they were great. I brought my family here as well and they enjoyed the non-vegan items quite a bit! read more

Love the food, love the drinks and the atmosphere, staff is nice but my only big complaint is they don't have Apple Pay. One time I forgot my wallet at home and had a business meeting here that I planned on paying for. When I got to Cafe Smitten and we ordered I realized I didn't have my wallet on me so the person that met up with me that I already told "It's on me" had to pay for both of us, which was kind of embarrassing. The second time I had an issue was with their outdated machine that couldn't read my credit card for whatever reason even though I've order many times before so again someone had to pay for me. It's not that I won't return but it's just annoying to see such a great place like this look so modern yet be outdated with something as simple as Apple Pay. On a good note, almost any dish you order with eggs is on-point and fresh every time and the Cappuccino is fire! read more
