The service and ambiance were great. It's fun to have breakfast and watch planes take off. Unfortunately, I had the worst breakfast I can remember. I order a veggie omelette which came with fried potatoes. The potatoes were soggy and the omelette was tasteless and watery probably from using frozen vegetables. I substituted toast for English muffin and got a tasteless biscuit. I probably should have sent the whole thing back. On top of it all, it cost $25! I should have just had coffee. read more

My kids and I came here after visiting a nearby park. This is a small restaurant in a building near the runway of an air park. The food is Nordic and different from the usual food you find in the United States (which I was happy to see). The views of the runway are fairly obstructed from the seating in the restaurant. So we went outside after eating to look at the planes take off and land. The service was really great! read more

I absolutely love Cafe Sophie. Not only is the titular dog an absolute cutie who always loves a good belly rub, but the food and ambiance are great. The English breakfast (which comes with HP Sauce!) is especially great. It's certainly the best I've had in Maryland. There are a number of other wonderful items, with Norwegian dishes and snacks you just can't find anywhere else. I would also recommend the warm pastries. Even when the restaurant is busy, the service is prompt and the staff are all friendly. I always like having a chat with the owner, a very outgoing and interesting man, as he walks from table to table. Beyond the great food and wonderful staff, the restaurant also boasts an unbeatable atmosphere, with dog pictures and Norwegian landscapes lining the walls. This is not to mention the air park location, where you can watch planes take off from your table. This restaurant nails everything. It's one of the top breakfast spots in Montgomery County for a reason. My only problem is that it's not open longer and doesn't have an even larger selection of great dishes to try. I just want more of everything! If you're in the area (and honestly, even if you're not) this place is a must-visit. read more

Norwegian Lunch: kjøttkaker (meat cakes) and Smørrebrød (open face sandwich with roast beef). This place in Moco makes IKEA taste like a frozen dinner. The open face sandwich is the perfect lunch. The flavors from the beef/pesto/remoulade/crisp onion melted perfectly. The Norwegian meat cakes is 10 times better then IKEA's Swedish meatballs. It's hearty, and would be a perfect meal during snowstorm. It was delicious, but what really made it was the mashed peas and berries. Will definitely come back here! read more

I came here for lunch today and have to say, I love everything about this place. The menu is so much fun and different from anything else in MoCo. Where else can you get a Norwegian open-face sandwich? As soon as you walk in, the modern grey decor makes you feel like you're in an upscale restaurant (minus the upscale prices to go with it). Our server, along with the rest of the employees we interacted with, was helpful and attentive. Since it was our first time there, we were welcomed with a complimentary sweet. We had trouble deciding on what we wanted because everything sounded so good! One friend got the Italian sub which came on a Scandinavian bread that I'd never heard of, the other got a salad, and I went for the Norwegian meat patties with potatoes, gravy, and Ligon berries. My dish was so comforting on this gross, rainy day. My friends enjoyed their food too and talked about how they need to come back with friends and their husbands who'd appreciate the food. We ended our lunch with the creme brulee. It was absolutely perfect with crisp sugar bits and ice cream on top. I look forward to coming back to try more! read more

New businesses around Gaithersburg are rare these days so I had to check this place out when they opened. This location is the former Airport Cafe -right by the Montgomery County Airpark. Great location given that you can watch small planes come go while eating. Another plus is that the place is named after their dog. I didn't manage to go in today but my husband brought out take out. I have to admit the Nutella pastry croissant is worth the visit. It oozes nutella and the pastry shell is delightfully crispy. Since the restaurant has a Norwegian theme, my husband went with the two hardest pronounce items on the menu: PANNEKAKER- Norwegian pancakes with cinnamon and sugar with apricot preserves ($8.79) and the SMØRBRØD-SCANDINAVIAN OPEN-FACED SANDWICH (BUTTERED) Smoked salmon with scrambled egg & chives: $12.79 I did not try the SMORBROD but the pannekaker (say it 10 times fast) was really good but don't be fooled, if you expect thick pancakes that's not it. It's more of a crepe. I know this isn't the most informative review-there are some menu items I can't eat right now but I do plan to come back to try the full breakfast and lunch menu (hello lattes and Norwegian weiners!). This is a newly opened restaurant located at the Airpark Airport in Gaithersburg. The place definitely got a face-lift, and it is very calming. My server was Stephanie. She was very helpful, attentive, and offered great suggestions. One of the owners (Sandy) stopped by to introduce herself and stopped again to check on the food. I was seated at a booth with a nice view of the outside. Pannekakar- it's their version of pancakes but it's more like crepes. Breakfast potatoes- it was delicious and very flavorful. Bacon- thick and crispy but not too crispy Everything was so good that I decided to order lunch to go. I got the beet salad and apple danish. The beet salad was delicious. Just missed the mark. $75.00 before tip for two kids and two adults. Baguette sandwich and the bread was rubbery. Kids had Norwegian pancakes with cinnamons sugar filling and neither liked them. So much cinnamon they said it was bitter. For goodness sake, offer pancake syrup for the kids. Husbands liked the omelette and toast but 3 out of 4 saying yuck. I've had this place bookmarked to try since they opened. So I made a last minute decision to take the hubs and daughter to try them out last Sunday. They Cafe is located in the main training building upstairs. It's a cool set up and they have options for both indoor and outdoor seating. It's cool because they have an awesome view of the planes, which you can enjoy while eating. The woman who greeted us, who I assumed to be the manager, was very kind and attentive. Our server was also nice, but it did take some time to arrive to our table. We ordered breakfast items, including the American breakfast, French toast and their pannekaker. Everything tasted good and we didn't wait long for our food. The only issue was my eggs and bacon was forgotten and I had to follow up with the manager, who got them to me right away! My daughter had asked for a glass of water, and she then noticed the glass was dirty and had lipstick on it ....when I mentioned it to our server she was very apologetic and brought her one from a clean cup. Overall, I love the ambiance and concept. I gave it 4 stars because of this as well as the customer service received by the manager. I know staffing is difficult these days, but I would just suggest that the servers be a bit more attentive. Other than that, we certainly go back! read more

You walk in beside the espresso machine on your right in the host stand then to your left is an asst of Dutch candies, fresh baked goods, and ice cream. The board has info on baked goodies and donuts l, which you won't find on your menu. The specials had an entirely diff flair. Food was well executed and plated. Real silverware, nice napkins, and heavy plates were above expectations. Casual atmosphere, great service, interesting location, and unique menu for the area. My daughter loves airplanes and we sometimes go to the county airport to observe airplanes. I saw FB that Cafe Sophie was opening in the county airport building. We tried the restaurant today and it was so good! The owners and the servers were very welcoming and nice. They indicated the best table inside to see the airplanes and my daughter loved it! They were very attentive and approached several times to ask if we need anything. The food came out very quick and that really helped as 3 year old is not very patient. The food we tried was all good and top notch. I especially loved the french toast. The bread was clearly soaked in the sauce well before it was cooked, which created the great bread texture. The other thing I loved was that the french toast was not extremely sweet. I also saw dish served ti other table and they all looked excellent! The price was very affordable for the amount of food and drink we ordered. My daughter and I will definitely try other plates soon and enjoy the great views from the deck and restaurant! read more

Don't go here if you have work to do. I went for brunch on my birthday, ordered a mimosa and had my ID stared at until the server decided he wanted to believe it. Real ID, I know I look young, come on. I ordered a coffee too and then had to take a quick 10 minute meeting. Never got the coffee, mimosa came after my meeting, and I was never served again. Wasn't asked about food or anything else to drink, both servers on the floor pretended they were busy even though they would look my way several times, seeing I was ready. After 35 years of dining at this location, the current (New) operation is my favorite. So after only one experience, in comparison to other operators, I give it the highest rating. An airport restaurant could rely on the uniqueness of airplanes to promote business, but this one now offers an experience worth the drive just for the food. Interesting menu prepared as expected: German lunch, traditional donuts for me. Service was pleasant and fast. Coffee was OK, not great. The less positive things about the experience were not easily under the restaurant's control: Wait times to get seated were longish (we almost left because of this), behavior of other diners (loud) and their uncontrolled children. I'm not complaining here, but it's useful for other diners to be prepared. Our high-top table partially obstructed a busy door to outside dining, so servers and other diners were constantly edging by and sometimes bumping one of our occupied chairs - and the open door caused a draft. It was not possible to switch tables - crowded! Still, well worth a revisit. Keep it up! read more
