Went for a search of delicious brunch while in the area. Yelped it and saw the mildly good reviews. Noticed it was downtown, which means turn your parking spot reflexes to super alert. I managed to get lucky within the street, but I saw other customers parking a few blocks away. There was even a line out the door and curved a yard away from the establishment. With the line, I was excited to eat something delicious! The anticipation grew when I saw diners eating humongous sized cinnamon rolled covered in icing. Literally as big as the plate, edge to edge. Once inside, maybe ten to fifteen minutes of waiting in the line, the interior design was quaint which is nicely putting it. Rustic cabin wall bench with wooden accents and fake succulent plants on each small table. It was like a school desk.. So if you have a big party, maybe sit outside and avoid fighting for surface area. The design is nice, the amount of space isn't - but that's with most brunch cafes. This place also is a "seat yourself" area so it is sort of strange for a brunch place to me. Food was ordered. A fish burrito the size of my fore arm, a bbq chicken sammich which had a generous amount of cheese, and soyrizo mexican eggs benedict. The portion was so overwhelmingly surprising. Usually most places only give you half what you get here and charge the same! So big kudos for the nice portion!! I ordered a mojo berry soda without knowing the coffee/tea selection, but next time I will get a horchata or chai. Lunch meals were both so big they had to be boxed. Boxes for the take out were oddly located outside in front of a street sign. Other than the lack of space and slight discrepancies with the wait, it is an overall very delicious place to go. We came to Cafe Topes mainly for the infamous cinnamon rolls, but unfortunately we were too late. Apparently, calling ahead is a smart thing to do! The line wasn't too bad and moved very quickly. There are about 10 tables inside an the decor is super cute. It was a beautiful day so we sat outside and enjoyed the Kap'n Krunch french toast and and egg sandwich on a croissant. Both entrees were delicious!! The portion sizes were perfect. I got a side of bacon and it was perfectly cooked, crispy without being crumbly. The fresh squeezed orange juice was just how I like it...not too sweet, not too tart. The prices were a little high, but the quality is there. We'll be back to try the cinnamon rolls! read more

Sunday Brunch : we plan our Sunday to go to strawberry farm and dog beach in Carlsbad, so we decided to have some brunch in there too, and yelp brought us here. Food : i ordered the pork belly egg Benedict, and that's what i am looking for a brunch, juicy pork belly cooked in perfection and love the creaminest of the hollandaise sauce ! My girl had the Monte Cristo, she's not too happy on that one (she got some comparison because she had her best Monte Cristo in one breakfast place in San Francisco i forgot the name of the place though, i will find that out soon) and i tried it too, and yes i agree with her, for us it's too much on a flavor, ham,chicken and bacon at the same time, and the dipping jam is just an average jam (Carlsbad, maybe supposed to have some above the average strawberry jam) simple monte cristo will be better. Then we had some Cinnamon Roll "dirty" yes! We enjoyed that one! Love the "dirty" side of it, i recommend that one for sure! For our drinks i got some cappuccino, and tried the Topes horchata. We got disappointed on those too, not worth the price. Location : easy to find, parking on residential area Service : no waiters for orders, you need to be in line to order ( only one cashier by the time we were there im not sure if they have more if it's more busy) but we're waiting in line for almost 45minutes, you pick your table after you order. And they gave us some wrong order, i ordered some fruits for my side and i got some hash brown, just because it's a busy sunday , i just take it and considered that an honest mistake, hopefully on our next visit it will be better. In general the service is good, nice neighborhood atmosphere, good place to chill on a sunday morning. Price : not worth it for drinks Extra : DOG FRIENDLY breakfast place, they have some bowl of water for our lovely furry friend. Had the crab and pork belly double header special. Lots of crab but the pork was better! I'm not the biggest fan of crab though, the wife's choice but she agreed pork was better. Very disappointing. The online menu along with the reviews of this restaurant made it a have-to while visiting family in SoCal. Even thought that the 45 minute wait was going to be worth it. First, we were scolded by the cashier when, while approaching the counter to place our order, we sent our daughter with the seven week old baby to sit at a vacant table. Convenient for her and the baby, out of the way from inside the building for relief of crowding and COVID safety. No worries, right? Then the food came: The salad with Soyrizo subbed for steak came with chorizo instead and to add insult to injury the chorizo was under-seasoned and the dressing on the side had to be re-requested as it did not come with. The Soyrizo Benedict was a great idea, but the eggs were overcooked and the hollandaise had no lemon flavor. The seasoned potatoes sounded like a good accompaniment to the Benedict but not only were they too under-seasoned and cold, but also came mixed with pieces of charred steak and mixed with nearly raw slices of bell pepper. The crack burrito was no less disappointing, with VERY rare steak inside and accompanied by tortilla chips that were greasy and chewy. The pancakes, alas, were reported as quite good, but the side of hash browns ordered along with were served cold. It also turns out that the "bottomless" iced tea is only refilled if you can catch a wait person to request. No one checked with our table to see if things were good or if refills might be needed. Good thing, for them, that they have you add your tip prior to service. read more

We watched this cafe undergo construction years back, yet I had never made it in since it opened. Today I visited for breakfast with a friend. I was really impressed by their menu, offering a great assortment of egg dishes, pancakes, breakfast sandwiches and a choice of side dish. The pricing was reasonable too. I ordered the vegetable eggs Benedict with a side of potatoes. It was beautifully presented and tasted fabulous!! My friend ordered the yogurt & granola parfait, which looked gorgeous and even had bee pollen sprinkled on top (a garnish shows you care!) All of the staff was courteous & helpful. When my fiancé and I arrived, there was a bit of a line especially because of the limited capacity due to COVID but the line moved relatively quickly. You order at the counter then take a number back to your table. I had the chilaquiles-- the chips were nice and crispy and had good flavoring. My fiancé had crack n' eggs-- the meat was delicious and VERY tender! We also shared the cinnamon roll. The only bummer were both our eggs were overcooked. My husband had the Crack Benedict and his eggs were not even close to runny and my scrambled came out like rubber.... but other than that it was delicious! What an absolute gem in Carlsbad! There is almost always a line and with good reason. So come with a good attitude towards waiting a bit. We have been for both breakfast and lunch. Overpriced for what I received. It could've at least come with eggs and a meat side. It was definitely not what I was expecting. I dont understand why this place is packed unless the trend has gone that deep where people think it's amazing but we are in Carlsbad, so who knows. This is a great brunch place where you order and pay first, and they'll bring the food out to your table wherever you are sitting. We got chilaquiles and the California burrito. The California burrito was flavorful and great. Chilaquiles was a lot spicier than I had expect it to be, but it was still good. They offered a nice array of coffee such as iced lavender mocha, which was overly sweet, but the flavor was there. This restaurant can get crowded, but it isn't impossible to find a seat. Parking is street parking only, but it's not difficult to find. There are plenty of streets to street park for free. No meters here like in L.A.! read more

I have been coming here since they opened. I'm so sad to see this place changing rapidly on the quality of food. They changed the chief and the food has become terrible. I ordered today a salmon egg Benedict and it was a shocker. It was a stale bagel topped with some sort of cheese , then piles of salmon slices ( tons of them), an egg and the holiandese sauce on top, tasted nothing like before. Also how many times i asked the Avocado toast the bread to be toasted both sides, they never get it right. Sad, wont be back. New chief screwed up all the menu i use to love. The granola yogurt as well is not the same. Fresh lavender is not always there for the latte. My coffee today was served with no saucer. Strange, i use to love love love this place. read more

Really nothing to write home about. To be honest not sure why so many wonderful reviews.. I took my mom here for breakfast.. you walk up and order and then sit down with your number. Not what I had expected. When I go out to eat which I rarely do I like to be waited on.. isn't that the whole point? Well anyways, my mom ordered the rustic and I ordered a turkey sandwich. The bread was great but the turkey was just so wrong I don't even have words.. Basically looked like slimy sliced butterball turkey from a Ralph's deli. Ew, right? I took a bite and it fell apart on my plate. I contemplated if I wanted to order something else but ended up just eating the wheat bread and leaving the slimy inners on my plate. The side salad that came with the sandwich was good... small but good. My moms rustic breakfast sandwich was pretty good.. I should have ordered a breakfast item. The daily specials are only on the wall to your left when you walk in. We completely missed those because it's a crappy spot to put them. How about putting them by the cashiers counter? Or I don't know a separate menu perhaps. Moral of the story don't order the turkey sandwich. Look to your left when walking in if you want the "good" menu items that aren't on the menu. read more

The food here is very good. We had the avocado toast and the chorizo Benedict and were very happy. There was a couple customer service issues not worth taking a star away. The staff is very nice. The issues we had involved waiting in line to order while social distancing and having an older couple come in where the lady wasn't wearing a mask and cut us in line. The staff so this but didn't try to explain we were already waiting. We also were delivered our food without silverware. The person who delivered the food said they'd be back with silverware but didn't return after a few minutes. I had to go inside to get some.
