We were here a few years back and couldn't wait to sample their breakfast offerings again. Their outdoor dining game is perfectly socially distant to start with friendly service throughout. The food is DELICIOUS!!! My avocado toast was on crisp whole grain toast with a delightful smash of avocado. Hubby had a wonderful savory breakfast sammy with crispy potatoes. The thing that stands out at this place is how well they do their hash browns. The amount of attention they spend on this seemingly simple item highlights their dedication to their food. The country burrito was great by itself though a little potato heavy. The gravy only made it better. The crack and Benedict was also great and the tri tip was flavorful, smoky and tender. Make sure to get the hash browns extra crispy. This place's hash brown is the epitome of what hash browns should be. The cinnamon roll was soft and delicious with a cream cheese topping. My first time visiting Cafe Topes since moving away from Carlsbad, and I was floored by how great everything was. The line moved quickly, and our hostess was awesome. She was incredibly friendly and made us feel very much at home. My wife and I had the chilaquiles with crack, and they were perfect. Spicy without being overpowering, and the crack (tri-tip) was seared perfectly with a medium rare temp. Couldn't have asked for more, and will definitely be back next time I'm in town. read more

Cafe Topes is a great addition to the Village of Carlsbad! Beautifully presented food with a classic brunch menu- it's hard not to like. The line often seems very long, but you order at the register before sitting down so it actually ends up being pretty quick service over all. One negative is the outdoor seating is very uncomfortable being metal chairs that I don't think anyone likes sitting on! The space itself is nice and they make good use of outdoor seating since we have such beautiful weather all year. It's a little overpriced for being a menu that is mainly eggs with toast and other breakfast food, but their saving grace is the homemade cinnamon bun I am kinda obsessed and you can get it extra dirty (with extra frosting) for those who really want a sugar high! I'm local and eat here about three times a year, most recently this morning. I want to leave this review as a composite of what I've noticed over the past few years in the hope that Topes can step up its game and survive in a competitive restaurant scene. 1. Please turn down the temperature of your griddle. Your scrambled eggs come out overcooked at best and burned (i.e. brown) at worst. My hash browns this morning were nicely done on the outside and raw on the inside. Similarly, the french toast this morning was a bit overly crisp on the outside and just barely cooked inside. Please teach your line cooks to take two more minutes on a lower temperature. It will do wonders to the food. 2. As other reviewers have noted, Topes is dirty. The concrete tabletops are pitted and therefore do not clean easily. The menus are sticky. We've had to exchange less-than-clean flatware for clean. The patio could use a good steam cleaning. Flies are EVERYWHERE (a years-long issue here), indicating a trash problem or even a food storage and inventory turnover problem. No other restaurant along Carlsbad's coast has this issue; that is, it is not because Topes is close to the beach. 3. Consistency. Sometimes the eggs in the Benedicts are poached perfectly; other times they are nearly hard boiled. The number of slices of french toast differs from visit to visit. 4. Service. There isn't any service here worth mentioning. No one offers to refill coffee. There is a jug of water for self-service but no cups, except behind the cashier (which we were not offered). Table wipe downs do not happen often enough. No one asking if the food is satisfactory. Please, Topes, take these observations to heart. I'd like you to succeed wildly. read more

Cafe Topes was super cute! The interior is pretty basic and minimal in terms of design, the outdoor seating looked nice and relaxing. We came on a Sunday morning so it was pretty busy the line was down on the side walk. You walk up to the counter to order then sit down with a number. Honestly didn't love this since it made it a little stressful not knowing if you'd have a seat by the time you made it to the counter (if you have a party of more than two there was only a few tables that sat 4) and it was a little chaotic with a big line of people in the middle of the restaurant made it harder to relax and enjoy the food. The food was incredible though! Everything on the menu looked great as well as the coffee beverages. We ordered the country burrito, chorizo scramble, seafood benedict and the 222 along with Mexican mochas and it was all fantastic the presentation of the food was great. I'd get there early to avoid the crowd but I'd highly recommend!!! read more

What I would do to come back and have another Lavender Mocha. My day would be made. This was my favorite meal during my entire trip to California with my boyfriend. We came in around 10am on a Sunday morning and the parking wasn't as horrible as we read about. We parked about a street away and had no issues. We were prepared for it to be packed, but the line moved at a decent pace. It's the type of café where you order your food, find a seat and they serve the food to you. I ordered the Veggie Scramble with Avocado, which came with a side of toast. The serving was more than enough for one person, so I took the leftovers back to the hotel. The scramble was great, but the avocado made the difference. The potatoes were spiced perfectly and you could definitely taste the peppers in them. Aside from the food, I loved the succulent wall and the creativity of the drinks and specials. It was transitioning to fall, so there were pumpkin options. The ambiance was great. I'd recommend this place for small groups since there's not a lot of space inside. There is outdoor seating, but we didn't get a chance to take a look outside. We definitely had an enjoyable morning here and if we ever find ourselves in the area again, we will be back! read more

Stumbled upon this place on the way for coffee and decided to eat here for breakfast. There was a line out the door, but that's expected of a Sunday morning. I got the Country Benedict, my boyfriend got the Country Fried Steak, and we got the Blueberry Toast for us to share. The dishes were super delicious, especially the hash browns which were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The blueberry toast was the perfect amount of sweetness and the blueberry jam particularly was delicious. The drinks are also super refreshing. The only thing I didn't like was the muffin underneath the Benedict, it was mushy from being trapped underneath the heat, but it didn't taste good. Cafe Topes is as good as it gets. Scrumptious food, exceptional customer service, and an attractive, comfortable and clean environment. I had biscuits and gravy, one of my party had a traditional eggs, bacon and hashed browns breakfast, and the other had avocado toast. I've had my share of biscuits and gravy over the years, but I'm going to say this was the best ever. The serving size is very generous, allowing me to share 25% of mine with the avocado toast person and still having plenty for myself. They crumbled bacon over the top of the gravy which added an extra level of flavor and texture to the creamy, perfectly seasoned gravy. The ratio of biscuit to gravy was ideal. The traditional breakfast eater said the bacon was the best tasting bacon they'd ever eaten, and this person is in their 80's, having eaten a lot of bacon over their lifetime. The avocado toast was a work of art; almost too beautiful to eat. But, alas, it was destroyed. They have a number of latte and mocha options. I'm a purist so had just the drip coffee, which was quite good. They are following all COVID guidelines with staff and guests all masked, staff with gloves, and antibacterial gel readily available. I'll be back for lunch sometime in the near future. read more

One of the best brunch spots in Carlsbad! If the line doesn't give it away, this hidden brunch spot is a gem and worth the wait. My daughter had the buttermilk pancakes with lavender latte.
