Location is kinda off downtown, in a not so pretty neighborhood. Signage is pretty hard to notice but since it is pretty crowded so I can see this place is supported by the locals. I ordered Three egg whites omelette with fruits and wheat bread sides, stomptown coffee and power granola. Egg whites omelette with tomatoes, arugula and spinach tasted pretty clean, but the fruit side was not so fresh and wheat breads smelled stale like old dried bread. Granola was nutty and fresh but yogurt was not my favorite. It was too sugary. Interior is cute, cozy and staff are friendly, but too many flies!!! Indoor, outdoor, well, they are all open space, so there's too many flies. Maybe the neighborhood is not so clean, that can be one of the reasons. First of all. All employees were extremely helpful and friendly. Constantly checked in to see how we were doing and if there was anything we needed. Went here today and yummm! Laid back atmosphere, and we got our food pretty quick. You order as you walk in and seat yourself. My husband ordered the capn crunch french toast, super yummy. I ordered the James, biscuits with country fried steak, country gravy, bacon and an egg. Ohhhh goodness it was delicious! My only gripe about this place is that all condiments for coffee or tea were at a little station and not individually at the tables. It makes it inconvenient to have to get up over and over when you need more cream and sugar. And no one ever came back to check if we needed refills on our coffee. We're typically pretty low maintenance when we go out to eat, but i can definitely see that being an issue to people. Hence the minus 1 star. I would order this again. The hash browns are crunchy and good. They didn't have a traditional 2 eggs, bacon, hash browns so you have to order it as sides. A place that closes at 2 o'clock really knows its stuff. Mainly breakfast items are on menu. I can't believe how delicious and huge the portions are. My Monte Cristo was Monta huge and I finished it!? Ok, trouble's here and I like it. The bread is grilled to perfection, crispy and full of eggy-ness. The syrup not too sweet, and was just the perfect amount. The only one gripe I had about it was syrup was set up around the edge of the plate which made it difficult when I placed my utensils on it because it kept getting my hands sticky. Turkey and bacon in there so tasty. Service was good and friendly. This is a really quaint relaxing place, small but I can imagine getting crowded easily. It took some time to find parking close to this cafe due to some events taking place nearby. We got here probably close to noon time. The place was full of customers inside and out of the cafe, but don't let this discourage you from coming in. When we got in line, there were just 2-3 people ahead of us at the cashier line. The interior decor is rustic. I didn't get a chance to take a pic of their succulent plant wall, but I thought it was pretty unique. The menu is great. They serve pretty much a good variety of brunch foods. I was more impressed with their benedict selection. If you plan to get any of it, highly recommend getting their special (if they still have it), which you can choose 2 different types of Benedict and a side (hash browns, potatoes, or fruit). I ordered the Mexican and it tasted pretty good. It was flavorful with the chorizo, tomatoes, and avocado. Never had anything like it before. However, their potatoes needs a bit more seasoning. Sister and I decided to try thins place since we are in the Carlsbad area. The area is nice and parking was. It an issue and luckily there were plenty of tables. You go up to the cash register to order and then you are provided with a number and they bring your food. The menu has pal tu of breakfast choices and portions are really good. The line moved quickly and after ordering we received our breakfast in about 10 minutes. The "Crack" is truly addictive and I was so excited when one of the daily specials was a double header. If you are anywhere near Carlsbad, CA you owe it to yourself to visit Cafe Topes. This place is comfortable and welcoming. The menu is pretty extensive and all is fresh and made from scratch. The cinnamon roll (get it "dirty" for $1 more and it is slathered with extra icing) is one of the best I've ever had...and trust me, I've had a lot of cinnamon rolls in my day. My pancakes were uncommonly tasty, the sausage patty amazing, and everything brought to our table was top-notch. The Eggs Benedict are legendary. Love this place. There are just a few reasons why I didn't do a full 5 stars. Cleanliness- very nice and clean. During the weekend it may take workers a bit longer to come out and wipe tables because it gets crazy busy. Staff- they are very sweet and attentive once you finally catch their attention. I came here as a party of two and was so into their coffee, serving full French Presses for $9. The press itself fits about 3 cups of coffee in their standard serving cups. With the delicious roasted taste of the press and the solid coffee grinds they use I would highly suggest this place a five star for the coffee alone. Sadly, I feel the need to rate it four due to the food not being worth the bang. This brunch place is a homey, new-age feel good style with a fast-food style way of ordering at the counter. The decor is nice with the touch of the succulent wall inside, rustic kitchen and cabin ware, and open space seating outside. The food on the other hand is just alright. The grab your own silverware and water concept compliments the scene to the only thing that they bring you is not up to standards. I had the Rustic being a hot sandwich and I would say ultimately it is below my expectations for $14. I would highly suggest not this sandwich due to the bland taste and overpriced ability. The salmon tasted fresh, and the meal itself was very light. The hollandaise sauce had the perfect flavor! Being big fans of pork belly, we also decided to go with the smoked pork belly benedict. This dish was very good as well, but it was wayyyy too heavy. While rotating from the salmon to the pork belly, I felt quite taken back by how rich it was. I had to take the rest Home lol. I would like to preface this by saying this used to be one of my favorite spots in Carlsbad. I have converted sooo many of my friends into Topes addicts (the cinnamon rolls and the Rustic sandwich are our top faves.) However, I believe they got a new chef or some new management because a lot of their recipes have changed. Their avocado toast used to be a delicious tomato, pesto, avocado, and pinenut situation. Now it has goat cheese, micro greens, and a balsamic drizzle, which is great if you enjoy that but I was disappointed that they discontinued the previous avocado toast. My boyfriend also noticed the same thing when he ordered the Hammer of Thor. Their French fries used to be crispy on the outside and soft in the middle, now they are just soft and not salted well. This used to be our go-to date spot and it disappoints us immensely that our favorite meals have changed for the worse. Now that I'm vegan, I was pretty excited to see a Vegan Burger on the menu and a Vegan Breakfast Burrito. I ordered the burger and it was just not good. It was supposed to have a balsamic drizzle with micro greens and pico de Gallo, but they just gave me a veggie patty, lettuce, and tomatoes. It was incredibly plain. I asked for a refund, but the manager was not there so the kind, kind waiter gave me a ticket for a free cinnamon roll and a free iced tea. I was happy to accept that in the meantime, as I'm not the one to complain over bad food, but this was an exception. Vegans, do not order this. If you do, make sure they get it right and make sure the brioche bun doesn't have butter!!!!! Mine did :( I used to love this place but wow, I don't know what happened. Aw was very disappointed by this brunch place. Pictures looked phenomenal but the food and service were lacking in real life. Eggs over easy = uncooked, I saw straight up egg whites mixed with overly runny egg yolk and asked for it to be cooked a little more to which the waitress replied I should've asked for over medium then. After 15 minutes we received our plate back and it was completely runny (basically over easy). Should've listened to the other reviews mentioning undercooked eggs. Hash browns looked great but had no flavor, and were undercooked underneath the crispy outer layer. Seasoned potatoes weren't very seasoned and country fried steak was overly greasy. Overall, this place was more aesthetic than flavor and substance and we won't be coming back. It was very overpriced for what we got with lacking service. read more
