I like Caffe Barney for the food, the price point, the convenience factor and the COFFEE! The service is indeed terrible. The aloof staff are often huddling behind the bar gossiping about the bender they were on the night before, and they really do look the part, but the food makes up for it. I love a good benny and this place delivers. The music is way too loud, but it seems that they want this place to be a 'hangover hangout' so I suppose it fits the bill which is always very reasonable due to the great prices! read more

This place has good breakfast. It is pricey and that's why I got in on Father's Day without waiting. Typical Vancouver bring lots of cash to park out on the street, $3.00 for an hour 7 days a week, 9:00 AM until 10:00 PM. Waitress was great, very helpful we had two young children with us. No children's menu but waitress was very accommodating splitting a menu item for the kids. Caffe Barney displayed the Amex sign but wouldn't take the card. read more

Absolutely great little cafe that my guy friend took me too, back in March. I loved it. the atmosphere was great, a little busy for a Sunday, but a def. place I would go back to in a heart beat, or when I am back in town next. Our service was great, not to over bearing, but just enough, and not to mention the food. Home cooked and prepared. It took longer than a normal (fast-foodish) place to come out, which you know, is how they love there food. Check out this place anytime you are town. It is a neat little gem, and bar at night. I was excited to try this place out on Sunday as I am on a mission to try out all the great brunch places in Vancouver. Unfortunately I was disappointed...not by the food but by the service. I ordered Huevos Rancheros and unfortunately my order was wrong and I was given a breakfast burrito. I wasn't really sure how that could be screwed up as they are not similar sounding, but it happened. No one apologized for the error and I was made to feel like it was my own fault that it happened. Under normal circumstances I would have just eaten it and not said a word, but unfortunately I have a wheat allergy. Luckily they rushed the Huevos, only to have it dropped in front of me without an apology. Helpful hint: A simple apology goes a LONG way. read more

First off, the food is pretty good, actually really good. The service was attentive tonight. So why did we decide to never go back? The management of this establishment is bizarre. This is the third time that we have eaten there and the music is BLASTING. I like their selection but when we asked for it to be turned down so we could talk, there was no response. What we saw was the bartender with a small group of "regulars" loudly talking, playing games and totally disconnected from what the customers in the the other end of the restaurant were needing. It was a Saturday night and this restaurant should have been full, given the food, location and good music selection for a young crowd. I am assuming that no one wants to go back as they are so turned off by the disregard for the majority of the customers in the restaurant who are not regulars and buddies of the bartender. This was one of our FAVOURITE places to go for late night drinks and most of all... NACHOS. We were actually heartbroken to find that they totally changed the recipe- for the worse. These were the BEST nachos we ever had ...deep fried jalapeños, equally distributed cheese, green onion, black beans, etc. Low and behold when we recently returned a new chef has decided to take away my one true love and replaced it with nachos that have beans and tomato sauce...and Parmesan. Stopped in for a quick bite late in the lunch hour...despite our late arrival (1:45pm), most tables were full, and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves/their companions/or the food! Nice variety of dishes: likewise, daily specials were quite nice. Cheerful, attentive service, no complaints there. Waitress took the time to check with kitchen for no nuts in the dishes (peanut allergy here!). I had black prawns w/penne from the specials, my friend a massive Quesadilla....nice side salad that looked "meal-sized". Didn't have room for dessert, so will have to return! read more

Ordered signature eggs benedict to go. Let's see - bacon looked like it had been sitting around for days waiting to be used - obviously pre-cooked - dead and floppy. Avocado was mostly brown - nuff said. Did they toast the muffin - don't think so. Hollandaise was tasteless - no acid (i.e., lemon). Eggs were cooked okay but had not been seasoned at all. Ok so I don't usually take a lot of time to post about every place I go to, but last night was one of those rare night I went to a new place and had an amazing time and received some of the best service from bartending staff in a busy place that I've ever received. I went to this place for a quick bit to eat and had many pleasant interactions with a bartender there named molly? Holly? Anyways clearly she was busy and still she managed to get us our drinks quickly with a smile and a really great attitude and an awesome wit. She really made an effort to get everyone their drinks quickly even though she was clearly dealing with many orders. A quick stop turned into a good time at a place i'll most definitely be going back to this place again. read more

This was my 3rd time at Barney's. The first time I don't remember (long time ago), the second, I remember this older guy serving us who had a bit of a chip on his shoulder. Funny enough, there he was the third time. He became impatient quite quickly, I guess not realizing we were actually there to enjoy the company of one another and not order everything right on cue to make him happy. It was dead in there (lunchtime, 1pm) and the food took forever. After asking for an extra side, i guess he became so frustrated, he stopped serving us. Heaven forbid he should top up our coffee and ask how we were doing. I've worked in this crap industry, as has my gf for 12 years, so we go out of our way to be extra polite with the serving staff. If this guy behaved this way toward us, it's unfathomable that it hasn't happened before. I actually heard he is an owner. I know he will hear about/read this review and laugh, name call, deny all he wants, but what can't be denied is that myself and anyone I know will not be patronizing this place any time soon. The drinks and atmosphere are not bad as in it is somewhat casual for granville street..music choices were good as well..however for the price point the food was subpar. On one occasion the hasbrowns were overcooked. Second trip the benedict english muffins were soggy, and avacodo they used was brown and mushy..skimping on quality and charging alot for atmosphere and granville street name. Why when an ingredient is in season the restaurant doesn't use it? Tomatoes are in season people and yet you served me some waxy pale looking thing on the Cobb salad. Which by the way needed to have the lettuce dried out a bit more and the egg could have been cooked properly instead of having that grey coating around the yolk. It was a BAD cobb salad for $15. I was not impressed! Perhaps next time I will stick to your breakfast items or just have a beer. read more

We did have to seat ourselves which is fine, although there was no sign saying we should. Great local place but be warned about the burgers. Impossible to cut, pick up, eat as you might do elsewhere. Extremely sloppy and all contents slide off onto your plate in a pile of messy particles. I understand that a large part of a dining experience is the atmosphere created by the host and wait staff, which is by trade usually charming and helpful. Occasionally one encounters an establishment that likes to turn this concept on its head; "The Elbow Room" is one example, though the jury is still out on whether that is really a working motif, but I digress. Generally speaking, unless advertised (Re: The Elbow Room), an antagonistic attitude is not expected, encouraged, or solicited from one's server. Caffe Barney was remiss from the get-go, as I found the staff entirely too impressed with themselves to find time to serve me with any level of respect or at the very least courtesy. I generally don't make a point of commenting about a server's attitude (I was a server for a number of years and understand that sometimes you catch us on an off day; we are all afforded them occasionally), but this level of disrespect was serving-staff wide. The disrespect I speak of was an overwhelmingly condescending attitude to the reasonable request for a coffee refill, or a question about substitution options on the omelette. In fact, the very initialization of service was only at our insistence. The reason this restaurant earned two stars, however, was the food. It was good, but unfortunately could not erase the otherwise horrible experience. I understand that many feel the service was great, and I suppose I may not be the ideal clientele-base (I.E. not a Hipster), but I still expect to be treated like a guest and be afforded the same service as any ideal customer. Lauren has given me the best service I have received in a long long time. She made excellent recommendations for me since I did not know what I wanted. She also made me a cappuccino and it was delicious and woke me right up! She's a cutie and a would go back for her! She had a man helping her as well. He was rather tall and slim. I like this place. It's really reliable for quick service, great beer selection and good food. They have a good brunch, although it's been a little less "good" lately. If it's Friday or Saturday night and you want someplace to head to on Main Street, this is about the only place that is guaranteed to have room for you. This in mind, the weekend staff seem to have a superiority complex. They will often treat you like it's a chore to serve you and they'd rather you'd just stay home than bother them with their food and drink requests. Sorry for showing up guys! read more

Every few years, someone suggests meeting up at Caffe Barney and I have no reason to object. My friend and I sat around for nearly three hours in the middle of a weekday, getting our coffee mugs refilled, and enjoying some delicious eggs benedict. I had the EGGS BARNEY (smoked salmon), which was satisfying, and the fried potatoes were pretty good. I wouldn't say the food is good value, but then again you're in a high-rent neighborhood. I wouldn't come here but the staff are very friendly. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger. It was overcooked. Far too dry for the fact the only sauce they put on it is a small dollop of mayo. The fries were greasy and only edible due to extra sauces brought in. I ordered a Caesar which tasted watered down with no bean except for a dried up lime on the rim. It's a great spot to be drunk, not a good spot for a date or anniversary. read more

A friend from Kelowna and I walked down to have some beer at Cafe Barney's at around 9pm. One of the servers was pretty skinny and quite attractive, but was quiet and seemed to be completely void of any personality or friendliness. My complaint is that asked for a pitcher of draft beer and it took them a long time in order to get it to us, while they were yacking away behind the counter instead of doing their job. Finally I looked at the bar because I was getting impatient, and I caught a glimpse of both the female staff working together to grab a half-empty pint someone else didn't finish, and then pouring it into an empty pitcher, then topping it off from the beer handles at the bar. I thought, "that better not be our beer." Sure enough, they took the pitcher to us, even though they both SAW ME looking at them. Those cheapskates served us recycled beer that we paid for! I was pretty pissed off, but didn't bother complaining about it. If they're that unscrupulous to do that in the first place, and brazen enough to do it knowing full well I was watching, I'm quite sure they would cowardly deny it and it would just end bitterly. We decided to simply drink the beer and leave, and vowed never to return. read more

I can honestly say that cafe barney has the best pulled pork poutine in Vancouver, and that's coming from a guy that's had a lot of pulled pork poutine In this city at various restaurants. Besides the poutine this is a great restaurant for brunch, no matter which eggs Benedict you go for, you will find yourself highly satisfied and the price is also very reasonable. The only reason I haven't gone for the full five star treatment is because there has been a couple of times where I haven't felt as welcome as other customers but I think that may be due to the local feel the bar is going for. Overall great food at reasonable price and a good selection of craft beers. Honestly though, the pulled pork here is the best! read more

O stars from me for this place. Very disappointed in the customer service of the bartender, he was rude to my friend. I accidentally ordered two glasses of red, when my friend arrived back at the table she mentioned this to the bartender; "that I had made a mistake and she would prefer white". His reply, " who's going to pay for this". Really? I had no problem paying for the extra cheep house red, however, if I had not made the mistake, I probably wouldn't have ordered a second glass of it, as it tasted awful, and next choice would have been more expensive. My friend let him know that we didn't have a problem paying for it as we were financially well off. But again, his reply was rude and sarcastic..his manners and customer service were appalling. Never again will we go back to this establishment and over a cheep glass of house red? Definitely, spread the word. read more
