I literally live less than 2 minutes away from here and have always wanted to be one those people sitting by the window, sipping my cappuccino and watching helpless drunkards try to flag down a taxi on a Saturday night. Well, I finally got my chance to unwind here after dinner the other night and ordered a Cinnamon Walnut Coffee Cake accompanied by a Hot Chocolate. As a former barista, foam-making is an art, and Cafe Greco has got that down, as I expect it would. The foam on the Hot Chocolate was perfect. Velvet-y and light, just the way I like it. The Hot Chocolate wasn't too sweet and didn't have that heavy milk feeling that most hot chocolates made with milk tend to have. The Coffee Cake was crunchy and soft in all the right places. It wasn't terribly sweet, which was a surprise because it looked like it should have been. Also, the view from the windows of the bright lights on Columbus Street and bustling people make it an experience in itself. I absolutely loved it! Love love LOVE Cafe Greco! The food and drinks are great, but I think my favorite thing about this cafe in North Beach is the atmosphere! There are HUGE glass windows, so whether you're sitting at a table inside or outside, you can soak in all that natural sunlight and people watch (I mean that in a totally non-creepy way). When San Francisco experiences warm weather (probably not til August/September haha), the windows are opened and it's just PERFECT with the light breeze making its way through the whole cafe!! I also like the fact that lots of people come here with just a newspaper in hand and they can sit, sip on their espresso, and read. I need to get on that... The pastries are good, the paninis are warm & toasty, the workers are friendly, there's lots of tables and chairs...what more could you ask for?! Finally came back here again tonight for a cup of decaf. Well... Good place for coffee and dessert also with great staff who would really know what food they are serving. I am craving for cheesecake for a few days and decide to have it here. Because I want to read my book too and of course here you could spend time. The guy at the counter is very very nice and super patience . He suggested me the cheesecake depends on how cheesy I like. I got the north beach cheesecake tonight with a glass of decaf white cafe mocha. Sitting here by the window watching the cars and people walking by when you are tired from the screen or your book is another way to relax. Come here and try one night of your stay. This cafe is great! I had a cafe mocha and a cannoli and it was about $9.50. The barista puts on show for you while he whips up your coffee drink. I don't like North Beach as much on Weekends. That's when I went here. Puccini was overgrown with tourons. Like spilling out from the doors. Anyway I had some tasty gelato here (not as good as neaby Naia) and a good (but not amazing) cappucino. I swear to Spirit that these places don't TRY as hard on weekends! So if you are a tourist who can blend in, go on a weekday and I think you'll get better service and food and beverage. read more

I was waiting for people to finish shopping so I hung around here with a couple friends for about an hour. I like the atmosphere here. I tried the Cannoli--pretty good. I had a White Hot Chocolate. I didn't like it very much. I would not recommend getting it. The Cappuccino my friend ordered looked legit. I didn't try to Gelato. We've been here on different occasions for coffee and dessert. Patronized by locals and tourists alike in the heart of North Beach. Last night eight of us came in after dinner, and were able to secure seating in the adjacent room off to the left of the front door. Grab a table, then queue up at the front counter to order off the posted menu on the wall above. Find desserts either in the refrigerated case or on the counter in glass jars. I passed on dessert and got a mocha and hubby got an Americano coffee to go with his tiramisu. Good size servings of both liquids and tiramisu of a 4x4 square. I like this Caffe because it's such a great location for grabbing a drink and going outside and drinking your cappuccino in the beautiful later afternoon and watching the people walk by. Another good thing about this place is that one of San Francisco's parklets is located right outside, giving it much more outdoor seating. i wanted a mean cappuccino...so what better place is there to go besides north beach? stopped by caffe greco as i saw them advertising illy coffee...wifey really likes the stuff so what the heck...why not? i ordered a cappuccino while she ordered a latte. honestly...they were pretty much the same. my cappuccino wasn't foamy...it was just as milky as the latte. but on that note...it was the best dang fake cappuccino/latte i've had in awhile! haha. i always like to order for here...as the mugs just add to the beautification process of an espresso drink...and nowadays, it seems that everyone is making shapes with the espresso and foam. shoot, i'm not complaining. i love the little hearts and leaves on my foam. they also have a small variety of desserts...the ricotta cheesecake caught my eye. one slice of that please! although the cheesecake was just ok...actually a little dry...but it tasted wonderful with the latte. the location is cute...you can sit inside and look out the windows as people walk by...and the bathroom is clean. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4...next time, i think i'll try ordering a dry cappuccino. great quality though! read more

The wait to order wasn't too long and they give you your order right away. I had the chocolate cake and a glass of chianti. The wine was great, but I've had better cake. Service was fine, tiramisu was borderline flavorless and not unlike something you might find in the bakery aisle of the local Safeway during "Italian History Month." I walked here from the JW Marriott and was completely underwhelmed. Ladyfingers taste like they were soaked in flavorless air. Portion size was great, but I didn't finish because a large slice of disappointment only continues to disappoint with each bite. Want dessert? Go somewhere else. Stopped by Cafe Grecco on a whim after the line for Mama's was out the door and down the block. Not in the mood to stand in line for over an hour, we found Cafe Grecco down the street. The cute, Italian-style cafe drew us in. The breakfast menu is small, only a few items, but still tasty. I ordered the scrambled egg breakfast sandwich on a whole-wheat bagel. It was served with turkey and slices of fresh tomato. The sandwich was just what I was looking for to fill me up before a bike ride over the Golden Gate bridge. Cafe Grecco has a lot of tempting pastries set out on the counter near the register. But I couldn't pass up one of their oatmeal cranberry cookies and a glass of Chai tea. The cookie was just how I like it, crunchy on the outside with a soft inside. The cranberries were a nice, tart addition to the oatmeal cookie. And the Chai was fantastic. I thought it was going to be too milky, but it had perfect, creamy flavor. Cafe Grecco was the perfect start to a long day of wandering San Francisco. read more

I think I love the atmosphere of this place than the actual drinks. I ordered a vanilla latte. While I ordered it he started making it right in front of me. It was awesome how fast they were, but when he put the vanilla into my drink, it was a free pour. They don't use pumps or anything, so my drink came out a little too sweet. The service is great though, everyone there was really friendly and funny. I love the outdoor seating. We were sitting outside around 11pm and were watching all the drunk people and tourists walk around. It's very alive outside around that time. I really enjoy people watching, so it's fun for me. While waiting for my grandma to finish up her health checkup over at NEMS, my 11 year old cousin and I came here in search for a quick snack. We were drawn in by the spacious interior compared to a lot of the other cramped cafes in North Beach. The constant hustle and bustle of people coming in and out was obviously a good sign as well. Atmosphere: Nothing impressive, but as I said there's a lot more space than your average North Beach Italian cafe. There's plenty of seating areas both inside and outside. Certainly does its job. Customer Service: Fantastic! As other reviewers have mentioned, the servers are amazing, friendly, and efficient to boot. They always talk to you with a very positive and personable attitude, treating you as they would treat a regular from Day 1. You really can't get better than that. Food: I was immediately drawn in by their variety of paninis, which by the way all sounded delicious! Although it was a tough decision, I ended up deciding on the Prosciutto w/ Mozzarella & Roasted Pepper. It was delightful and an awesome combination. My little cousin, who adores sweets and desserts, opted to try their cannoli. WOW! It was fantastic! The cheese was not too sweet too - absolutely perfect. Even though I've vowed to cut out sweets from my life, I seriously couldn't resist just a few more bites. RIP my dignity and resolve. --- I was struggling to decide whether or not to give Caffe Greco 4 stars or a 5. The food and customer service is definitely worth of 5 stars, but the downside is that I do feel that it is just a bit on the pricey end. The panini and cannoli were delicious, but at 8 and 5 dollars (including tax) respectively, I probably wouldn't be too interested again. Went on a date here and was completely charmed. It's got the old school deco vibes going on with plenty of inside and outside seating. It's very authentic tiramisu; it's very moist and light, almost to the point where yes, it's a little soggy. But, isn't that the way it should be? Delish! - Brasilana: it's a chocolate cake with tiers of chocolate cake and cream, with shaved chocolate outside. It was moist and heavenly and perfect! - Cappuccino: Caffe Greco uses Illy coffee, and it is not a bad thing at all! The general consensus is that it's some of the best Italian dessert in town.
