Café Palermo was not a huge letdown but did not live up to the hype of "King of Cannoli". The cannoli there have definitely been premade and sat in a refrigerator. The cream was too thick and the shell crust was much too hard. The chocolate mousse cake was tasteless and underwhelming at best. I would not recommend going here if you want authentic Italian dessert but I will say that the staff was very helpful and kind. See this is a complicated review because it comes with a lot of good news and just a little bad news. The good news is this place serves the single best cannoli I've ever had in my entire life and it isn't even close. They're perfect. Crunchy shell with incredible inside filling just enough chocolate chips to give a crunch but not too much to overwhelm. And their chocolate shell cannoli oh my God. The funny thing is I actually didn't like cannoli, never did. I'm from Buffalo NY and we have Italian restaurants and bakeries and stuff so I've tried them and they were always meh or just not that great. This place changes everything! Every Christmas for years, my late uncle would send us cannolis and cookies from "a special cafe in NYC" that I never knew the name of. Those cannolis were the best cannolis in the entire goddamn world. I ended up here by pure serendipity after having lunch at Umberto's next door, and I had no idea this was THAT cafe until I tasted my cannoli -- it was unmistakable. I texted my mom asking her if this was the cafe Uncle Dean used to send us stuff from and she confirmed that it was. To have a cannoli so good that you can actually RECOGNIZE it the second you put it in your mouth is a really special thing. Caffe Palermo is truly the "cannoli king," as their cute oversized-cannoli sign promises outside. I tried a slice of plain cheesecake too - plain cheesecake being the ultimate test of a cheesecake's true quality. No flavors, no toppings, just straight up cheesecake. It was just as outstanding as the cannolis. I hope this cafe exists forever, not only because of the sentimentality, but because I don't think their cannolis could ever be duplicated. I kinda feel sorry for Caffe Palermo. There's a sense of desperation in their advertising..."Still the Best Cannoli on the Planet Earth" "Voted #1 Best Cannoli in New York" "Eat our Cannolis or Sleep with Da Fishes". OK, I made up the last one but you get the drift. Ferrara, the true godfather of cannoli bakeries is just around the corner on Grand, and they display their cannollis with pride on the sidewalk in a glass case. As for me, when I thought of having a cannoli for the past forty years that I've visited this city. Without exception, I went to La Bella Ferrara, a smaller operation which I thought was related to Ferrara but I just realized it's not. Don't tell Don Corleone I didn't know that or I'll have to go to the mattresses. So you can see why I never tried Caffe Palermo until I noticed it during a leisurely morning stroll in Little Italy. I actually had just a few minutes before heading to the airport, and frankly no one was in the place which by Little Italy standards, was pretty spacious. That may not have been a good sign. I can't write a super lengthy review of Caffe Palermo because I was only in and out pretty quickly. My friend and I ended up in Little Italy and I wanted a cannoli. When passing Caffe Palermo, they had a sign that said "Best Cannoli" and a huge line out the door, so of course I had to try one! The line was long but moved pretty quickly. Once inside the restaurant, it looked like a casual pizzeria but it was packed. Every single table seemed occupied. Their dessert case looked wonderful with gelato, different cheesecakes, and of course cannolis. I was in the to-go line and just grabbed a cannoli ($4.50) and exited the madness to eat my cannoli outside. I'm not cannoli expert, but it was delicious! The filling was very rich and creamy. Named cannoli king, I didn't try the cannoli though. I did have the Italian rainbow cookies. Reasonably priced but I think they put raspberry jam? in between the cookie pieces instead of almond paste/jam. While the first bite tasted good the more I ate the more I realized that the raspberry(?) jam was wayyy to overpowering for the taste of the cookie. It made everything taste like jam instead.
