Really great little old-school coffee shop in downtown Portland a couple blocks away from the Chinese garden. Overall good drink options and a somewhat limited food menu made for a perfect stop in our afternoon. One of the more amusing things to do on the weekend is to look at all the tourists lined up around the block waiting for their Voodoo Doughnuts. My intention is not to slam Voodoo (I've been there plenty with zero line at off hours), but they are not worth waiting an hour in line, outside, in the rain, to get your sugar fix. I used to recommend that folks walk a few blocks and get coffee while they wait at Stumptown on 3rd and Pine, but that can be a scene of a different sort. Not that I want to infest the place with tourists, but Floyd's has become one of my favorite coffee houses in Portland. It has the same beautiful brick walls, they use Stumptown coffee beans, but have none of the 'scene.' The staff here is much more likely to be talking about the latest Trailblazer game than eyeing your attire. Compared to the coffee temple down the street, I find this place to be completely relaxing. There are two rooms inside, one with a comfy couch, and a gorgeous fenced outdoor patio with plenty of tables and umbrellas. There is an old school phone booth inside and local art on the walls. Everything I could ever hope for in a coffee shop, including no lines and no attitude. read more

I only stopped here because it's close to Hoodoo Antiques and I was trying to waste time while waiting for it to reopen. This is a pretty solid coffee shop though and I'm surprised I haven't been here before this. Not a huge coffee menu but it has all you need. I got a small mocha and since the weather was nice, I drank it outside. Smoking is allowed too! Service was friendly and quick. They have a bathroom but you need to ask for the code to get into it. It's too far from my motel I stay at while I am in Portland to make any promises about returning, but I wouldn't hesitate to stop in again if I was already walking around the area. read more

I stopped by Floyd's willst meeting a buddy for coffee on a rainy Sunday afternoon. This place has a total Portland/Seattle vibe. Good selection of different coffee and espresso beverages, locally sourced of course. A moderate amount of seating that included booths, standard tables with chairs as well as a couple leather bound chairs that were nice for sitting and chatting in. In standard left coast fashion, you get your coffee in a delightful ceramic mug and when you're dining in. The baristas here do a nice job making the espresso drinks pretty and all in all, it's got a great ambience for just relaxing and caffeinating a bit. Not the most amazing shop you'll see, but certainly not the worst and one where you can probably get some good studying/chatting done! read more

I have been a regular to this location for years. Great coffee as always. They also carry pastries and mini burritos for breakfast. In the summer, the tack away outdoor seating is a nice quiet place to be. You can enjoy the serenity with your coffee in downtown Portland. They also open their space for local artists to display their work. Not sure how easy to secure an opportunity to display artwork there but it seems that the artworks get replaced quite often. The location is fairly close to the Saturday Market and Max line, Chinatown (that hardly any Chinese businesses exist), NW Natural, ODOT etc. big space for group meeting! read more

This is the worst cup of coffee I've ever had. For four dollars I'd expect at least a decent flavor. It's bitter and my stomach hurts...I've only drank a quarter of it. Also, the batista had nothing out..no cream, sugar jar was empty. Ugh! I came here specially for coffee and wi-fi....No wi-fi. What kind of coffee shop doesn't have wi-fi. Good coffee that leaves a bad taste in your mouth. My husband, baby and I are visiting Portland after hearing great things about the city. First stop off the train we head into Floyd's based on its great Yelp reviews. We ordered two drinks- both a triple shot of espresso over ice with a bit of vanilla and topped with cream. We've order this drink at countless independent and chain shops without any issues. We're charged $6 total which is about average. We pay and tip. After a long wait (even though we were the only people being waited on), two cups with espresso and ice were set at the end of the table. Usually our drinks are prepared for us but no biggie. We headed to the counter, added a bit of cream and a lid and were on our way. Then comes in why this is a two star review and not four. A female employee stopped us on the way out and basically shamed us for our use of the cream. She told us we used too much cream and we should have been charged for breves instead, which cost more. The conversation was long and uncomfortable. We fixed our drinks just as we ordered them. If they wanted to charge us more, she should have had that conversation with the employee-- not the paying customers. A breve is 1/3 espresso and 2/3 cream-- not even what we ended up with. This employee's horribly inappropriate and rude "speech" was the worst welcome to a new city ever. The decent coffee isn't worth the bad service. read more

Floyd's is a gorgeous coffee house space that I stumbled upon during a recent walk around the Portland Saturday Market area. I love the brick walls, the wood tables, the comfy couch (on Couch, get it?), a nice outdoor patio (weather permitting), and local art. I enjoyed my cup of black coffee and an amazing chocolate nut donut that made any subsequent trip to Voodoo irrelevant. I almost felt that I was entering the space-time continuum to discover a pocket universe where the coffee culture is pure, counter staff is down home, the lines are short, the prices are reasonable, and my fellow time travelers are just like me. I'm a homegrown Portlander, one of the last of her kind. This place is legit. The building use to be a club back in the day - many good times were had. I'm glad it's a coffee shop now that can meet my dietary restrictions, ah how sweet life's little changes can be. They have a fantastic assortment of snacks for all diet types. I'm gluten-free, vegan, with a corn allergy and they were able to delight my fancy. That's impressive! The new management is cool too. I'm glad they're putting in the elbow grease to make some improvements. This will seriously be one of my favorite haunts. read more

It's a 50/50 chance your going to get a proper cappuccino at this joint. The first three times that I went in for a cappuccino it was fantastic. It was a Saturday morning around 11 and there were two very friendly blonde women who were super great. The barista at the bar at the time was the one who made me the perfect cappuccino three consecutive Saturdays. However, the last three I have had have been full of stiff peaks of foam and taste and sounded as if the milk was not aerated properly. Having spent the better part of the 80s working in a coffee house a block from where the new Floyd's has landed, walking down Couch Street and in the door felt a little like coming home. The Stumptown coffee (I went for black drip coffee as usual) was freshly brewed and tasty. The kids seemed to enjoy their hot chocolates and the owner was super friendly. The open space, generous seating (they intentionally made their work area small so the customer area would be large) and the cool retro phone booth make the scene very inviting - of course there is free wi-fi ("Without that in Portland, you're dead," was how the owner put it.) It was a great place to take a breather from Saturday Market and I'm looking forward to hanging out there on some workdays in the future. I could see this becoming my favorite coffee joint in downtown, since La Patisserie won't be coming back in this lifetime. read more

Kwan is awesome! I work around the corner from Floyd's and stop by at least once a week. He is incredibly kind, personable and makes me bomb oat milk matcha lattes. Because they are located downtown, there are people experiencing homelessness on the sidewalks near them. Not all people on the streets are strung out addicts, but some are and that can mean people can come into the shop high, struggling from mental illness or incredibly aggravated. I have seen Kwan respond to them with patience and understanding, but still very much so establishing firm boundaries and making sure everyone in the shop is safe. Highly recommend coming here! Long standing favorite at their east side location. This spot holds up to it's siblings awesome reputation. This one is a lot bigger with many more spaces to sit, relax or work. The location is prime and tucked quietly into the middle of the block with a patio in the summer months. They have great grounds, decent tea, and solid snacks. The food menu looks delicious and I am excited to try it more. The baristas are all super friendly and know the regulars well. A lot of them have worked here for years. They are efficient yet can chat and do their job. It's nice when having a conversation doesn't mean holding up the entire line. The line space here is small but it moves fast. A great work from home spot every now and again. There is power around some tables when you need it and the wifi is generally dependable. This place is nothing snooty or fancy, it's good people, good coffee and a great space. Come enjoy the tunes or just grab something on your way through. read more

Floyd's is a bit off the beaten path, but I wanted to give it a go with all of the glorious reviews they had. So many 5 stars! To my dismay, the barista that helped me was very rude. She ignored my presence and immediately greeted the two regulars behind me. When I asked her to explain some of their specialty drinks she proceeded to tell me what an espresso was. Thanks, Capt. Obvious. She was very condescending in my interactions with her. On the flipside, she was bright and sunny as one could be with the regulars. Which, in my opinion, is worse because it shows that she has the ability to be nice, she just didn't believe I was worth the effort. FYI there's a $3 minimum for plastic. So if you're like me and never carry cash, be prepared. The coffee was sub par. So much so that I drowned it in the honey sweetener they had on the counter. It's your standard coffee shop look. The bit that stood above the rest? The reason I didn't give this place just one star? Power outlets at EVERY table. Amazing. In the end it wasn't worth the trip. Even if my phone had 16% more battery when I left. read more

Attitude! If you want to feel like a total schmuck, Floyds is the place. Its got a great cool location. The coffee is good. Why dont I like this place? Lack of customer respect. The last time I went in there there were 3 people behind the counter, 1 taking money from a line of customers, 1 prepping food, and 1 cleaning/moving stuff around. The problem was, there were 10 people or so in line after paying. No food/coffee drinks were being made. We were all just standing there looking at each other while the Baristas gossiped. Finally a lady asked for her coffee drink, got a rude scathing look, and was told she had to wait her turn. I ended up waiting close to 10 minutes for a breakfast burrito. What was infuriating is that when they handed it to me, it was pulled out of a container pre-made/pre-wrapped. Grrr. Floyds is about being way cooler than the customer. They dont give 2 cents for you and they let you know it through their actions. read more

I used to be a frequent Floyd's customer. The first several times I was there, the reception from the staff (1-2 people) was tepid. Coffee was very nice, and the bakery was a big plus (being pregnant and usually starving). Very nice ambiance. The final time I was there, I stood in front of two counter guys who were discussing something really important. Stood there for a good several minutes in an empty space with no acknowledgment. One finally walked out from behind the counter, still not acknowledging me, and went outside to smoke. The other one then noticed me staring at him intently. The BEST part was, I wrote a less-than-stellar, but still fairly glowing review of Floyd's (4 stars, I think) and got a nasty-ass personal message from the owner - the very guy who's smiled and served me my coffee (he's the only one who does seem to give a damn, even if it's a rather inefficient damn). When I wrote something meek in response, I got an even nastier message about how I don't understand customer service, and I suck, or something to that effect. To the owner: Honey, there's a shit ton of coffee in Portland, ranging from terrible to excellent. Your coffee is good. There are at least 2 other places (Backspace and Stumptown) serving Stumptown coffee within an easy walk of your location. If you're going to make a go of your establishment, you'll have to stand out. My suggestion is you stand out for some other reason than being a whiny jerk with a persecution complex. I've been there enough (and have been a regular since they opened) as I work across the street. Its popularity shows the coffee quality. And normally I'm willing to wait as long there seems good reason to however. The Floyd's sign has been posted for months and the owners were cruisin' for a bruisin' if they thought that the words "Opening Soon!" would appease my classmates and I much longer. Since our arrival at the White Stag building across the street in September we've been waiting with baited breath for a place that serves up a great cup of coffee close by (heck, even just a "good" cup of coffee), because really, in this neighborhood, your options are pretty limited. So passing by early this week to see a new welcome banner hanging at the corner of 1st and Couch was actually a bit of a shock, in a "Wow! I never thought I'd see the day!" kind of way. Walking into Floyd's is like taking a step back in time, and in a neighborhood where new spins on old styles and historic preservation are the norm, heading into this 50's inspired cafe feels right. Inside there's plenty of tables large and small to work or hang out, big couches to sit and chat, papers to read, and music to listen to... It's a warm spot that I'm sure I'll find myself at many times in the coming year. While most coffee shops tend to have the "grab and go" feel, this one actually has the "please stay for a bit" vibe. Dragonfly Tea, Mexican Hot Chocolate, and all the Stumptown laced coffee drinks you could think of dot the menu. $3.50 for a 12 oz. Sugar Free Vanilla latte is an alright price for a weekly treat, definitely not a daily stop, though the drip coffee is much cheaper and quite tempting! Toss in some pastries and other goodies and you could easily make a meal here, either early in the morning or late at night. It's pretty fast, nice and tidy, and totally sincere. While not super busy while I was there, I imagine as word gets out and more businesses and folks re-energize the area this is going to be a major catalyst for activity in the neighborhood. This coffee shop has tons of space, yet feels cozy. There's even a nice outdoor space. The location is perfect for my stop on the way into work, even more so since I can avoid getting wet on rainy days through the strategic use of the Burnside bridge and Floyd's awnings. I really appreciate their lack of a gimmick: no super-artsy feel of Stumptown or mega-corporate sterilization by Starbucks. Just a comfortable coffee shop that's clean and has a damn good 12-oz latte for $3. read more

Cheapest pints in old town, and they're all local, but no one will ever tell you about it. Most know Floyds for setting the standard for Portland coffee houses since the eighties. The place has soul. They dropped Stumptown coffee the second they sold out to coca-cola, and picked up Water Avenue, my favorite roaster to pop up recently. You can catch local famous artists and the mayor plus people from city hall here if you know their faces. Everyone who's been here long enough knows it's the place to unwind. read more

I never realized until I stopped by at Floyd's the other day just how long and far I can get in life with ONLY these things: coffee, a comfy place to sit, and an electrical outlet. There should be a local public access reality show about how long people could survive here with no other outside resources. The coffee does the work. The food is good. The people are nice. Most coffee shop hipsters are secretly average people pretending to be cool. The people at Floyd's are the opposite: genuinely cool, but you never feel as a customer like they're too good to give great service. Sometimes you want to just huddle around the wooden table with your laptop. Floyd's. Sometimes you want to snuggle up in a restaurant-style family sized booth with a nice person. Floyd's. Sometimes you want to sip your iced drink outside in Old Town on a rare, sunny morning without crazy people and the leftovers of last night's party grabbing at your ankles. Floyd's. I vote this place the GREATEST COFFEE SHOP on a Portland rainy day of extreme drizzle. Two things. First they have cheap ass breakfast burritos that provide an amazing breakfast. Second they have cheap ass beans and rice which provide an even more amazing lunch! You can sustain yourself at Floyds like your an experiment inside a Biodome habitat! I seriously used this place like a second home on a project recently. Without doubt Floyd's just gets coffee like Bubba got shrimp. They also get southwestern food to pair with the overcast. Power outlets galore for my lap top, an awesome giant communal table for working as well as plenty of other booths/tables to work with friends. A beautiful, cozy, nostalgic, comfortable, and well-maintained interior, power outlets at every seat, open wi-fi, excellent music choices, and Stumptown coffee. The quiet back room with the amazing red-stained wood ceiling attracts architects, designers, and other creative types for meetings over lunch. The bathrooms are impeccably clean. They have a limited food menu (Panninis, red beans and rice, and a soup du jour, all quite good) that fills a nice gap in the Old Town lunch service. The baristas are efficient, consistent, and have a good eye for detail. Floyd's now has Ninkasi and Czechvar on tap, and while the "Open Late" part of their slogan isn't entirely true unless you go to bed at 6:30pm, it still makes a great place to grab an after-work beer. This place is the best cafe in Old Town, and it's not particularly close. read more
