Great brealast as usual. Always a short wait for a seat. A most economical quality meal anytime of day. We ordered a two egg breakfast special with link sausage and an extra side of grits and also the Mediterranean omelet with shredded hash browns. Oh my the spinach, gyro meat, onions and feta cheese was delicious! The omelet was cooked just right. The waffle was perfect, crunchy on the outside and fluffy inside. The coffee was fresh and hot. Breakfast all day, need not say anything else.. Had Corned Beef hash, eggs over easy ( perfectly cooked ) Grits ( nice and creamy ) and a beautiful homemade biscuit. Wash that down with a Beck's beer ( hey , it was well past noon.. ) and the meal was complete! Like to see a better variety of brews, there is a beer revolution going on these days guys, get on that train. Other than that no criticism, not regrets.. Simple fare , for simple folk.. Cagney's Restaurant In my ongoing search for the best breakfast restaurants in Winston Salem, I have to place Cagney's near the top. After a dozen or so visits I have to say they excel in delivering a well cooked plate. It's the usual eggs, meat, potatoes and toast or biscuit but expertly cooked and served with a smile. They also have excellent pancakes. An added bonus is a separate smokers room-a plus for those who do and those who don't. Pros: Food, service, prices, smoke free main room and a great location. First time visiting after 10 years of driving by and noticing the restaurant. I finally decided to give it a try and I'm very glad I did. I'm big on supporting local restaurants and this is one that will get a lot of my support in the days to come. First impression was the convince of where it's located from any direction of the city. However was a little put out due to the extremely small parking lot. Was greeted by a man who was working the register who seated us. The interior is homey and comfortable. I was pleasantly greeted by our waitress, Cassandra. She promptly took our drink order and was great at explaining some items on the menu. She was quick to bring out the drinks. I ordered the Saturday special parmesan chicken and my guest ordered the days special of pork chops. Cassandra is as awesome to keep the drink refills coming before my drink was completely out. With my order I got a house salad which was a great size! Normally the salads at other establishments are so small you hardly get more than a couple fork fulls. I was very satisfied with the size of the salad and even more with the size of ranch that accompanied it - big bowl which was fabulous! Our meals turned out amazing! Great portions for the price. This is truest a hidden gem in the Winston area. Very glad I gave them a try and the only regret I have is I didn't try them out sooner. Would give a 10 star rating if given the option. First, the highlights: my eggs were cooked perfectly, the hostess was friendly, and the coffee was decent. And now the rest: The hash browns appeared to be frozen, not fresh. Everything was underseasoned. The gravy was flavorless and appeared to be instant. It took over an hour to complete our meal because our server wasn't the best. I've been eating at Chaney's since I was a child. I left NC 20 years ago, but always make sure I stop in for breakfast when I visit. This is down-home breakfast at its best. I don't eat meat, but manage to make an awesome breakfast out of biscuits, grits (slow cooked not instant) and a pancake and hash browns (chunky) My husband get the normal breakfast special and loves it. We never get any odd stares for being a gay couple in the Deep South. We are always pleasantly met and well received. Service is always fantastic. We feel treated like family. I don't get much sweet tea living in Fort Lauderdale now, so I always fill up at Cagney's and they always make me a to go cup. A great staple in the WS area. read more

Come here if you love options! This place is amazing their prices are unbelievable! Everything was extremely fair priced and there's a crazy amount of options! From liver pudding to waffles haha. My boyfriend got a biscuit, two eggs, a bunch of bacon, and shredded hash browns and I got a biscuit, egg, and cheese, with shredded hash browns and sausage links. I don't know what the others are complaining about. If you like the place, 3 stars is rude. I loved the food. The service was fast. And the bill was under $25 for a full dinner. There is also a sweet sense of community. An officer sat alone for dinner but knows every waitress and they him. You could tell many customers are regulars and greet each other like friends at party. Wonderful place to sit back away from the stresses of the day and have a nice home cooked meal , my daughter and I are up from the Jacksonville NC area, visiting my youngest who is going through Chemo , we were looking for a place to get something to eat , and I had been here once before when I was up and had a great experience, but wow this time it was awesome. The waitress who I wish I could remember her name , took our order and didn't even have to write it down, the food is delicious and hot not Luke warm like a lot of places and the prices are very reasonable, I had chicken fried steak , scrambled eggs, hash browns and a biscuit, she had corn beef has , hash browns, scrambled eggs and toast , two sweet teas, which was perfect not to sweet and our bill was under twenty and the portion were perfect . My wife and I went there for a late lunch. She had the chicken Philly sub and I had the Philly cheese steak. Her sandwich was really good and was stuffed with ingredients and mine, well you needed a magnifying glass to see any of the beef on one of the halves. My sandwich was just "ok" and I would recommend avoiding it. The wait staff was great and very cheery. My tea was only empty for a few minutes before a refill was brought. Stopped in for breakfast/brunch the other afternoon. After reading mixed reviews I was skeptical. When I arrived the place was buzzing and the energy never wavered. I was in town for a hockey game. Some of the players and I went out to brunch here. We had everything from a grilled cheese to a steak and eggs to a Mediterranean omelet. One guy is allergic to everything and I'm a vegetarian so not everywhere is great for us to eat. The food was great! Our waitress got it out fast. Stopped in for breakfast on Sunday. Not impressed at all. From the moment you walk in, the scent and sense of senescence permeates the entire establishment. In general, the food is bland and average. Eggs over easy were good, grits were pretty tasteless, sausage patties were overcooked (hockey pucks), waffle may well have been the frozen type, and the bacon was meh. Coffee was decent. Other reviews rank it a lot higher, so maybe it was an off day, but I'm not sure I am willing to try it again. I think it probably is exactly what it was that day. read more

This place is a becoming a routine for us when we make the long trek from Greensboro to TJs. The place has that old timey feel of the 80 with rustic fans to boot. The staff is very friendly and patient even when the place is packed. So far, every time has been a time where it's packed. Not that you have to wait long or at all. I like to visit local restaurants when I travel. That way you get to know more about an area than eating at a chain. Cagney's is a good local restaurant. One high point was the 4 Points Salad. You can have it with either grilling chicken or steak. My Dad tried the steak. It was more than he could eat and very fresh. My breakfast was fast and fresh. While visiting family we saw this neighborhood restaurant and took a chance in dining here. So glad we did! The customer service was very friendly and attentive, the food selections were sufficient enough for everyone to find something they liked (even the vegetarians) and the prices were amazingly reasonable. My wife and I have eaten hear so much, and usually it is good but once in awhile it is ridiculous!! Called in an order to take home, I know it was a tough order but I thought they could get it right ?? I ordered a club sandwich, no tomato, with shredded lettuce and mayonaise!! Did they get it right ???, NO, leaf lettuce and no MAYO!! They were so busy fussing at the cooks, I guess they just didn't see it! The manager was really fussing at them. Oh yea! I'm on the border between 4 and 5. The service is friendly enough, and the restaurant always seems to have enough tables, despite the fact that it always looks packed. Waitresses walk up and down with coffee dispensers and order pads, and it give the homely impression you can only appreciate during breakfast. The food is what you'd serve on average. The bacon is cooked well and the omelets are popular. The toast might have been my favorite feature- it wasn't burned or crispy. Sort of lightly heated so that it's golden. I tried breakfast here because my favorite place is closed on Sunday. So I ordered items to go for my family and I was really not impressed at all. As I waited for my food, the servers were complaining about the owner who had not arrived yet and were also complaining about there customers. There was a clip board where people were to put their names on so that everyone would be seated accordingly. However, there were 3 tables reserved for their privileged customers who came in about 45 mins after the reserved sign was placed on the table. There were several people who got smart and left. My food was really just ok. The gravy is terrible, the shredded hash browns were burnt and stuck together. The bread is not toasted hardly at all. Their chocolate chip pancakes had maybe 6 chips to each and the ribeye was so small that I asked for mr and it was mw. I have tried the food before and it really was not different so I will not be going back. Now I hear they bought out a restaurant on Stratford rd. Hmmm, that is interesting.
