Awhile back, I took my 4 year- old there for a cupcake. As we were waiting in line, the owner got in to a conversation with the lady ahead of us. They complained extensively about the clientele coming from The Horror Bodega next door. She said that they weren't "her kind of people" and that the people from the comic store across the street weren't any better. She went on and on about how if she had known that "those kind of people" would be buying her cupcakes, she would have never rented the new location and how she didn't feel safe because they dressed like devils and wore ridiculous makeup. We couldn't leave because my kid was committed to get this cupcake, but I will not spend another dime at this shop. In response to the owners comment below: I walked in at the same time as the woman you had this conversation with and she left before I did. Your shop is small and it is impossible to only hear a portion of your conversation. You can try to reframe what you said after the fact but I understood exactly how you felt about your new clientele. I sincerely hope that the ridiculously made up devils chose to spend their money somewhere where their hard earned cash is appreciated and they are made to feel welcomed and safe. You have certainly lost a customer in me.

Even though we ordered more than enough, our guests gobbled them up, including ours! The new hubby and I are still trying to figure out who took our cupcakes. We drove 2 hours in horrible traffic to their office in Van Nuys ( I should have taken this as a sign). As for their office, they actually rent a space from a catering company called Cornucopia so look for the Cornucopia sign when you get there...if you're still willing to try them out after reading this review. At our first meeting, Ernae, the assistant, was very accomodating and was most helpful. She was taking copious notes and was asking us lots of questions to make sure that she understood what design we wanted for the cupcakes and the cutting cake as well. She even offered us ice cold bottled water (it was very hot that day) and gave us a dozen minis and 2 regular cupcakes of various flavors to take home and taste at no charge. The meeting ended on a good note and Ernae told us that she would probably have the sample available sometime next week. The flavors were: - red velvet with cream cheese frosting - vanilla bean with mocha cream filling and buttercream frosting - carrot cake with cream cheese frosting - banana with buttercream frosting - coconut with milk custard filling and coconut cream cheese frosting - lemon with lemon curd filling and cream cheese frosting - chocolate with dark chocolate frosting I am not going to lie. Their cupcakes were delicious. Our favorites were the vanilla bean with mocha cream, coconut with milk custard, and the lemon with lemon curd. The minis and the regular cupcakes were the right size and the frostings/fillings were not too overpowering. All the cupcakes were very moist without being oily and not too sugary. Unfortunately, our excitement ended with the samples. I emailed Ernae that weekend with new ideas for the cutting cake and she responded asking for some clarifications on the designs to which I responded. That was the last email/communication I received from her. I knew that they'd be very busy the week after so I waited a week and left her a message on her phone but no response. My fiancee even emailed her and to my surprise, she responded by saying she said would call the next day but never did. I even left a message for the owner, Julie, and she never returned my phone call. As Ross said in his review, they're not very prompt when it comes to responding emails/phone calls. Also, it's nearly impossible to reach them via phone since it always goes to voicemail. Additionally, to make things worse, their voicemail sometimes gets connected to a random gentleman's voicemail. I understand how difficult it is to run a small business on your own since I work for a small business as well, but come on, the least you could do is reply to my emails/phone calls or call back when you said you would. Even after all this, I was willing to give Blue Cupcake another shot since I thought, maybe just maybe, they were just having a very difficult time during those three weeks since they're a small company and maybe just maybe, my experience was just out of the norm. However, my fiancee convinced me otherwise since at this rate, they might not even show up with our cupcakes on our wedding day and I'd probably end up with a heart attack.

Everything was vegan & gluten free! The geode cookies were so lifelike that my friends didn't want to eat them. I was a little wary of the Earl Grey flavored cake, but it has become my new favorite flavor. It's not entirely subtle, but regularly enjoying Earl Grey tea, it definitely pulls in the earthy-spice-lemon aspects. The frosting was a bit too sweet, but technically, the lavender flavor did work really well. Money well spent and I hope that I can order again from here.
