Reason for one star rating: We completed our tasting and selection of our cake a year ago. Day of the wedding arrives and there's no cake. Come to find out they do not have an order for our cake, a cake was rushed over and in time for our cake cutting. After our wedding, we started the follow up process and were told it was our responsibility to complete the order electronically (which was never explained or else it would have been completed a YEAR AGO when we called to confirm our selection). The bakery alleged they called us and left us SEVERAL voicemails, which was simply not true. We were on top of our wedding planning and in constant communication with all of our vendors. There was zero ownership or responsibility taken by the bakery, the impression was that we should have been happy there was a cake at all despite it not being what we had selected. It's important to note that the cake provides was tasteless and seemed to be an old cake. Despite it being one of the happiest day of our lives, this process definitely left a sour taste in our mouth. Literally. read more

This place is hands down the best bakery in San Diego. The amazing attention to detail, the delicious taste of their cake, and the friendliness of the team is out of this world! Someone had recommended Cake for our wedding and we scheduled a cake tasting. Each flavor was better than the next! My husband hates bananas and we ordered a banana cake for our wedding, it's THAT good! The service was perfect and everyone asked where we ordered our cake from. I just ordered another cake for my baby shower and it was exactly how I pictured it (I'll upload a picture)... it was perfect. The vanilla cake with lemon curd and fresh berries had everyone asking for seconds. Although there was a little hiccup the second time around, there is no doubt we will continue ordering all our cakes from here. We ordered a cake to celebrate a big birthday; the theme of my party was fiesta. I loved it when my husband brought it in. It added a lot to the decorations, as it was beautiful! Our guests loved it. Several people said it was the most beautiful cake they'd ever seen!!! (I told them where I got it.) Everyone also loved the delicious cake once I had to cut it. Little bakery tucked in Bankers Hill that delivers as promised. After scrambling (last minute of course) for a bakery to make my daughter's birthday cake I walked in to Cake. I wish I got the name of the woman who saved the day to thank her on here, but thank you Cake! I walked in on a Wednesday morning and asked for a custom princess cake and needed it on Saturday. Nestled in a quiet residential neighborhood, Fab Cakes looks from the outside nothing like what you'd expect of a bakery and absolutely like a boutique professional consultancy, and that wouldn't be far from the truth. We had placed an order in advance for a custom cake, content made of coconut shavings and pineapple bits (piña colada, if you'd like) encased in a seashell, ocean-themed exterior. For a 12 inch cake that serves 15, it was weighing in at a hefty 7 lbs. No wonder - inside was stuffed full of fruity goodness in some of the most moist and delicate white cake and vanilla cream I've ever tasted. The seashells and seahorse decorative piece are made of white chocolate, the flowers of fondant (I think). The cake was not your typical mass-produced, disgustingly sugary American dessert. It was, for me, completely gourmet and deserves to be expensive. Fab Cake puts to shame what some of the lesser LA establishments deliver for the prices they charge. read more

I've never tried their cakes at CAKE, but if they are as good as their cupcakes, I can't wait to try them! And I'm not even a fan of cupcakes! I usually find them to be dry and the frosting too sweet, but not at CAKE. I recently ordered some chocolate and red velvet cupcakes to give away at work as a holiday treat. Everyone loved them and started asking where did I get them from. The cupcakes are also so pretty that you almost don't want to eat them. And when you bite into them, the cupcake is moist and delicious! The chocolate cupcake was my favorite. I also ordered some brownies and they were so moist, chocolatey and decadent that I didn't want to share these! I love brownies and CAKE makes the perfect brownie. Not to mention, if you wanted your cake to be decorated, the only option was fondant which I didn't want (doesn't taste good). Just when I was losing hope, we tried out CAKE and the cake was really delicious! We ended up getting carrot, vanilla, and chocolate for our layers. Also, they don't use fondant there but were able to decorate the cake beautifully with buttercream and white chocolate icing (beautiful and delicious!) I found a picture online and worked with them to create a similar look. They worked with me and the end product was more beautiful than I could have imagined. Note: as you've seen in many other reviews, communication with them can be a little challenging. But, it's because they are very busy as they really are the best. CAKE not only makes amazing, original creations, but the flavors are divine: almond raspberry cream, chocolate banana truffle, pear spice. We used them for our wedding and because my husband's not a fan of fondant, they rolled out white and dark chocoate to make the stripes on our cake (see photo). I love the cakes here, if you want to sample them out they sell the cake tasting sets Saturday mornings (you just have to let them know ahead of time). I've tried a slice of the red velvet which was good. For the cakes I've ordered I really like the banana truffle, that's their signature flavor. I also tried the espresso I believed which was good too. Yum I think I want some cake now, but it's not the type of place you can just walk in and get a slice though (wish they were). It's more of made to order for wedding and special occasion cakes. But one time when i made an order I asked if they did have any cakes and that is when I tried the red velvet slice :) The full cakes I've had have been decorated beautifully! I called them 3 weeks before my husbands big FIVE-0 surprise birthday party.....requesting a cake made in the likeness of our dog..Duke.... a Golden Retriever....and holy mackerel!!! They made it even more spectacular than i imagined!! It was seriously so cute, and perfect....there were a few "happy tears" when it was unveiled. Thank you so much you guys. When my now husband and I were planning our wedding, our wedding coordinator suggested Cake as the vendor. Since all her other recommendations were spot on, we knew we were going to be impressed before we set foot in the bakery. When we met with them, they had four tastings out...a vanilla lemon cake, a chocolate mint cake, a red velvet cake and a banana truffle. Immediately, my husband and my mom and I all chose the red velvet and the banana for the cake tiers. I had never in my life imagined I would choose such non-traditional flavors for my wedding cake, but there was no other choice - they were fantastic. Flash forward 6 months to the wedding...we received compliments all night about how good the cake was and how nice it looked! They did exactly what we wanted...a simple, square, three tiered cake with black ribbon around each layer. Our fantastic florist (Kathy Wright) drizzled the cake in green orchids and it looked beautiful! Besides the small amount stuffed in my mouth by my lovely groom (such a strange wedding tradition), I didn't get to eat a piece but I have the top tier in my freezer ready to be thawed out on our first anniversary! I even had them make up a Chicago Bears theme groom cake that I surprised my husband with at the rehearsal dinner! It looked awesome! We got our wedding cake from here and it was absolutely amazing. We got married at the Bahia and the wedding package there included cake from fab cakes and I was initially worried at first because I didn't get to select the bakery of my choice for my wedding. However, I had absolutely nothing to worry about. The cake tasting was delicious and convenient. You just go to the store and pick up their most popular flavors and take it home to try. This was great because we were able to invite friends over to help us eat all the cake. While all their flavors tasted amazing, we wanted something that was a little more us so we asked the bakery if it was possible to experiment with some asian flavors. To my surprise, they were so willing and excited to try out new flavors! We ended up with a matcha vanilla cake with cookies and cream buttercream and our guests went CRAZY. I feel like usually most guests forget about the cake at weddings. But our guests could not stop talking about how good the cake was. We had people coming over days after the wedding just to help us finish the cake. Yep, not to congratulate us but to literally eat all our cake. After sampling 4 different bakeries, my picky (but loveable) husband finally settled on CAKE to make our wedding cake! We tasted many different flavors, and they were all very good - it was hard to choose. I was very surprised at how reasonable the price was compared to other bakeries in the area, especially considering these ladies have won Food Network's Cake Wars multiple times! They worked with us to design a totally awesome cake that went above and beyond to match our theme and colors. With all other bakers, they charged more to do anything cool with the cake, so I was just going to go with a white, plain cake. Not CAKE! First, they painted the cake teal to match our bridesmaids' dresses (and they somehow NAILED the color without ever seeing a swatch - see the photo posted with this review that is more zoomed out - the dinosaur skeleton is wearing a top hat with an actual swatch of a bridesmaid's dress wrapped around it - it was an exact match)! They also added a hand-painted gold overlay to go with our modern vibe, and added a little chocolate crumble top so our little dinosaur cake toppers had something to stand on. They didn't charge extra for any of these design "upgrades." When I saw the cake at my wedding, my mouth actually dropped - it was STUNNING, and looked so much better than I was imagining. They nailed what I was looking for. We also liked the fact that the cake was made with buttercream (and still looked totally smooth), because fondant is gross. (Don't even pretend you like fondant. No one likes fondant.) The cake was delicious, too. A few people have commented about how good it was. I only had time for a bite, but it tasted as good as it looked - I wanted to sit there and eat the whole piece when we did the cake cutting, but my day of coordinator made me go dance instead. BOO. I was coincidentally getting married on my birthday and wanted to give a nod to my birthday without going too overboard. I wanted a very modern cake with clean lines, but also wanted to tie in the bright colorful florals I had at the wedding. Kimberly said she would take care of the florals once she arrived, and create a modern design. The cake honestly stopped me in my tracks. I was so blown away by the design and the look of the cake. It really exceeded my expectations! To this day I keep looking at the gorgeous photos of the cakes. Guests at the wedding raved about the flavors and even went back for more slices. This was great to hear as a bride because not everyone takes the option to eat a slice of cake.
