I don't usually write bad reviews but I paid $70 so why not. I am giving 2 stars solely for the presentation of the cake, or lack thereof. While it tasted good, I was very unsatisfied with how the cake itself turned out. I ordered a special one for my dad's 50th birthday based on a picture THEY had on the wall of THEIR bakery. The service was good and the women at the front is very friendly. This was my second time placing an order with Cake world and I had no issues the first time. The first picture is one I took inside the bakery the day I ordered the cake which was 3 days prior to his birthday. The lady said they would be able to do it just like the picture (I ordered the personal cake topper from Etsy to replace the car in the original picture) and told me 3 days was enough time to do so. My mom picked up the cake, but honestly I wish I had because I would have shared my thoughts then and there. It don't know if they got a new baker, but it just seemed sloppy and rushed. Immediately I noticed the 5 individual candles on the left hand side were poorly stuck on to with black icing and continuously fell off from the moment we got it. The #5 looked like an upside down #2, and when you look closely the numbers look like they were molded by a child..The whole black piece on the bottom of the cake was an actual ribbon made of CLOTH, which we didn't find out until we cut into the cake and had to stop slicing to remove it. So of course the cake looked worse after that was off. In my opinion this was not worth the $70 I paid. Like I said, it tasted good, but sloppy overall. read more

Cake World made our wedding cake 16 years ago....when they were on the other side of town. Obviously I have a soft spot in my heart for this business. We still get the same vanilla cake with strawberries every time we have a birthday of anniversary. What I like most is that you can buy by the slice as well. This is a small mom and pop operation which makes it easy for me to support them even more. My hubby ordered my daughters birthday cake last month and it was made in a days notice. I had purchased cupcakes from this place for my daughters first birthday. They had been absolutely horrible. The frosting was all off and the cakes was dry not moist at all. We also purchased some cannoli and what a mistake that was. They are by far the worst cannolis I've ever had! They only had filling on each end the middle was completely hollow with no filling on the inside. It's a shame bc my husband bought 6 of them and they are three something each which is a huge waste of money and I'm super pissed off about that. I have been going to cake world for many years now and continue to discover new things that they offer that are simply amazing. Going there is reminiscent of the bakeries back East, with wonderful flavors and moist pastries. From decadent sweets to my favorite black and white cookie that my father used to buy me as a child. I usually stop on my way to work and pick up some of the breakfast pastries and turnovers. The cherry and cheese are both favorites of my co-workers, and they also have a full selection of turnovers including pineapple and guava! Most recently, I purchased some of their desserts which are simply wonderful! Their eclairs and Napoleans are moist and decadent. They also have been making macaroons which are really the best I have had in the city. I have brought them to a few friends and they said it was like they were made in Paris - so moist and chewy. They also have some great cake selections. I have used them for birthdays and even casual wedding receptions. Again, their cakes are very moist and full of flavor. The tres leches is my most recent selection and it was again - WONDERFUL! The owner is the baker and is always incredibly friendly and helpful. Oh my goodness! What great stuff!! So yesterday, I was getting several basic health screenings done, in the N. Tenaya medical complex. And wondering how I am gonna find time to make the dessert that my h. had just told me needed for work, the NEXT day. Yeah right!! So I searched for bakeries nearby. Cake World was only a couple blocks away. They do mostly custom cakes, but based on the reviews, it seemed like they might have some pastries on hand. And WOW, did they!! Cake World, you saved me yesterday! I got a total of 18 assorted cookies and pastries, plus 2 slices of cake too (tres leches & chocolate mousse), for about $30 + tax. According to h., it was all terrific. I stole one of the iced sugar cookies...very pretty, but also very flavorful and tender. (Definitely very superior to the usual iced sugar cookies, which taste like raw flour and have the texture of cardboard.) The cake slices were delicious, and so rich we had to save half of each for another meal. I will be back...to try the other cake flavors; and the the empanadas! This amazing bakery is a hidden GEM!! The selection is outstanding and they even sell beautiful cakes by the slice which I've never seen in a bakery before. The cake's decoration was the deep ocean with blue wipe cream spiraling up with lighter water like colors going into shore. My complaint is that every time I come here the cakes cost more and more. I have no problem paying good money for a cake but the prices are getting outrageous especially since the decorating is sub par. This last time I ordered a Tres Leche cake with strawberry filling. Since there's only about 7 of us I ordered a 10 inch round cake which isn't that big. I also asked to have a picture put on it. The total price was $52.00. This is my 2nd year purchasing birthday cake from this location and I am just as impressed as I was last year. This year I turned 60 and was a little apprehensive because of the milestone being celebrated but I'm so happy I chose them again after shopping around. Councilman Stavros Anthony's office brought apple turnovers to an event I was at and I brought home a couple extra for my son, Mr. Picky. He loved them and I finally found out Cake World is where they came from and is only 15 minutes from my house. I went there today, my birthday, and got 3 apple turnovers for my son and 2 different slices of chocolate cake for me. The cake slices are so moist, super deep chocolate and great chocolate filling and frosting. I saw lots of other things I can't wait to try. **edit My son says these turnovers have virtually no filling in them and doesn't even know if I should give them another try.
