We had passed by Cake Ya many times and I'd always been curious about it. Finally I managed to go and check out this cute little shop. It is a small bakery with no seating area; they appear to be known for their Japanese style cakes and puddings. They also make some elegantly crafted confections called nerikiri which looked to be similar in texture to mochi. I decided to buy a few of their puddings to bring home and try with the family. Covid #14 It's a misnomer. The pudding here is not a pudding in the western sense. It's closer to a creme caramel with Asian flavours. Black sesame and matcha. Those were the two I tried. Very unique. Not overly sweet and you can really taste the eggs in the custard. Non- descript store front that you can miss if you blinked. When you are in the neighbourhood take some time and use the app to find this place as it may surprise you. When you come here you realize this small little place is practically a factory churning out Japanese sweets and you will end up leaving with a few items, just like we did. So what did we get? Honey cake, a serving of their custard pudding, and a chestnut red bean mochi. Cause of the size of this store, the entrance to where you pick and pay for the items is narrow, so if there are people going, you maybe waiting a bit, due to everyone's safety. The place does things well, and I can vouch for all the items that were bought, the honey cake was a star, not overly sweet, moist and would pair up well with tea or coffee you may polish the whole loaf down if you don't watch yourself. They also do Swiss rolls, cakes and tarts and if you don't watch yourself, you could be leaving with more than you thought you originally came here to order. Wow, what a hidden little gem in Port Moody. No frills shop inside with no seating but loved their homemade treats. Have been meaning to try this place but wasn't in the area until I went to the gallery bistro for brunch next door. Little unassuming place with 2 Japanese ladies working there. I ordered some daifukus. The mochi was soft and so chewy but I felt there was too much azuki bean paste (not really a fan) in them. I also got the royal milk tea and original Purin the royal milk tea one is super flavourful and good. The consistency is a bit denser than other Purin I be tried. I also got the Japanese cheesecake which has good cheesecake flavour. It is a takeout place so don't plan on sitting in. Nice benches outside in the area though if it's a nice day. read more

Not a lot of options when I came by pretty disappointing actually but the rice cake daifuku or very similar to mochi was excellent. This is a "Cakery", not a regular bakery. They don't carry things like bread. Have tried: Soufflé Cheesecake, Mont Blanc (chestnut cream), and Chocolate Banana Roll Cake. I liked the cheesecake best, followed closely by the roll cake. Mont Blanc wasn't as yay as I had hoped. I think I was thrown off by the huge loaf, since I've only seen single-serving ones before. By the way, all their cakes are that size (a bit bigger than a six-inch sub). For those of us that can't make it out that east that often, their custard puddings are available at Izumiya (http://www.yelp.ca/biz/izumi-ya-japanese-marketplace-richmond) in Richmond. I'm not exactly sure what Japanese cakes are, but I like it! I bought a semi-sweet chocolate cake to share and it was delicious. This cake was more dense, but soft and not too rich. It wasn't overly sweet, which my husband liked. Next time I'll try their macha sponge cake with cream filling. I heard about this place though searching for bakeries in Port Moody. Upon arrival, the store front is unassuming- nothing fancy, in fact you may walk past it and never realize it is open to the public! No desserts or anything on display. I found out that they are actually a supplier for various Japanese cafe shops in Vancouver. There is no actual sit down place inside. They do sell a small selection of roll cakes, pudding and cookies. Most of what they offer is made to order. I picked up a matcha bean roll and matcha shortbread cookies. They were each delicious! This very small little bakery was staffed by two Japanese women who were busy at work behind the counter making fresh cakes, custards, and daifuku. It seems like everything is made from scratch - the two of them were simultaneously whipping cream, baking sheet cakes, cleaning strawberries, and serving customers. There was a huge pile of fresh strawberries which looked awfully appealing that they were prepping for the strawberry daifuku (none were available yet that day). There was a limited selection available for purchase, but everything looked very fresh. I get the impression that they make things in small batches to keep everything at the best freshness level. They were offering samples of their Cheesecake and Castella (honey cake). Both were very good. The matcha roll cake also looked very good, with a matcha flavoured cake rolled around fresh cream. No samples on that one unfortunately! I took a full cheese cake home (it is baked in a rectangular loaf which provided about 8 slices) which was an incredibly reasonable $4.50. Crazy. The cheesecake was the light fluffy soufle kind you find commonly in Japan. It was true to Japanese style in being not overly sweet. Delicious! I must return to try their Mont Blanc (which was listed on the menu, but not available). I absolutely adore the Japanese style of this chestnut cream cake, and I have a feeling they will stick true to the same flavour profile as you find in Japan here. There was an article in the December 2nd edition of Vancity Buzz about coffee shops close the Evergreen Line. Now that there is a line that makes it easier to go to Coquitlam this foodie can expand outside the Vancouver and Burnaby area. Without the new Evergreen Line there would be no way that I would go out all the way to POMO and discover this place. This is an Asian style cake bakery mostly. The only reason this place didn't get five stars is because the location really sucks, especially if you are bussing :( Anyways I decided some pudding might make finals week better so I decided to make the trip out. When I was in Korea this summer all I ate was pudding, but I found it hard to find good pudding here. WELL, NOW I HAVE CAKE-YA!! I bought the original, matcha, and royal milk tea puddings. I chilled them in the fridge before eating, and they are SO GOOD. I love pudding... And the pricing is pretty fantastic. $2.25 for original and $2.50 for the flavoured ones, and the portions are pretty good. Not yout average tiny pudding. They specialize in cream pudding with a Japanese fusion twist: Custard Creme Caramel, Match Creme, Black Sesame, etc. As you are prepared to pay for your goods, you are immediately distracted by the beautiful cake rolls: Matcha Red Bean, Chestnut, Strawberry... and then the Okinawa Shortbread... You can kiss that diet Good Bye. Adieu! (Or you will just need swim a 50 in that pool before and after) Chestnut Cake Roll: Chestnut puree covered heavenly soft sponge cake with whipped cream center with more chestnut with a chestnut on top. Matcha Red Bean Cake Roll: A light but robust flavored green tea sponge cake filled with tender soft red bean and smothered with whipped cream. I died. Japanese Baked Cheesecake: In Japan they call it soufflé cheesecake. Japanese cheesecake stands out in the crowd by its velvety smooth, creamy yet fluffy texture. It general shrinks in cold temperature. So it is best eaten freshly baked out of the oven! Okinawa Shortbread: Fine crumbly buttery shortbread. Each crunch bursts with flavors. I love that I can taste the matcha so evidently and yet it is not bitter. Sesame is fragrant and if you break it apart, it goes incredibly well as a ice cream topping. Try it! Vanilla Red Bean was interesting but I'm not a huge fan of red bean to begin with. If you are lucky, you might catch their Daifuku made fresh daily (occasionally). I like this place! Has the Jap style min blanc that is not too sweet. Also had okinawa style shortbreads but not much to say about that. It was this really white shorbread cookies sprinkled with sugar? At first I thought I had to bake it more? But the mon blanc was excellent and other desserts look very yummy. I visit this bakery almost on a monthly basis despite its out-of-the-way location. It is always worth the trip because of the quality of their goods. Short of pudding I had in Japan, cake-ya makes the best pudding I've had and if you catch them early enough you get to choose from neat flavors like coffee, black sesame and milk tea! Their mont blanc is also top-notch, so much chestnut! And for nearly every birthday in the family, we almost strictly order the greentea red bean cake. The green tea flavor is really potent and there is a generous amount of red bean that is not too sweet to balance out a fluffy soft cake. I am surprised to read that others felt the owner had an attitude as I have never experienced it. She is not necessarily talkative but I think that is just because english is a second language for her. Every time i have been to cake-ya the owner as polite and helpful. Location SUCKS especially if you're using buses. I heard they have awesome cake rolls, puddings and strawberry daifuku, so I always wanted to try their baked stuff. I don't know the rules of this cakery, but do I have to order if I want to buy anything? I walked in there with my husband at 11:30 on Thursday and there was 1 lady standing behind the counter, looking at us like "You're not supposed to be here". Yeah, she looked absolutely SHOCKED for some reasons(we don't look threatening at all by the way). I was bit confused but I said "Hello" with smile and my husband did the same. So I looked inside of the glass case... They barely had anything in there. No cake rolls, no puddings...only 1 strawberry daifuku & 2 regular daifuku. So I bought 1 strawberry daifuku and I bit in. Red beans were under cooked and there was barely any flavor. I was very disappointed of course. We came from so far away and we didn't even get to see other stuff than daifuku. I wanted to ask her how I can get more stuff from them but she looked scared and I was also scared to see her reaction if we ever ask her any questions. So I didn't ask...and left. Went to Starbucks across the parking lot and enjoyed coffee. THE END. No, not really The End. But hey, can someone tell me how to get more stuff from them other than daifuku? Nice Japanese bakery specializing in homemade desserts. I usually come here to get the Honey Cake which come in a loaf for a very reasonable $5. Most of the time it is better to come mid-day as sometimes they run out of items at the end. Other items I've enjoyed include the puddings and also the green tea cake with the red beans. The location is a bit secluded but on the bright side there's plenty of street parking available. If you come in and out of Tri-cities via Barnet highway it'll be right on the way. read more

Stopped by after lunch for quick bite of dessert to take home. This is not a sit down fancy dessert place (such as True Confections) but rather, a take out, bakery. We've never been by Clarke St before and this cute and quaint block of mom and pop shops in Port Moody reminded me of Steveston village. We arrived around 1pm on a Saturday afternoon and three lovely ladies were busy mixing and baking away in the open kitchen. The smell of freshly baked goods made it irresistible to walk out without a bunch of baked goods. The display case was 3/4 empty as they were still baking away, but that didn't stop us from selecting everything that was available and we managed to scoop up the last pack of Okinawa green tea short bread cookies ($2.50), a roll of match/red bean cake roll ($7.50), a cup of pudding ($2.25) and a couple of red bean mochis ($1.55 ea). My husband inhaled the cup of pudding while still at the store and my 4 year old son enjoyed the red bean strawberry mochi in the car. The matcha red bean roll was nice and airy with a good flavour of matcha and a generous amount of red bean. We will definitely stop by again and hope there will be more selection to chose from. read more
