Also, if you want milk for your coffee instead of half-and-half, they will charge you for an entire glass of milk. To be fair, he let me know ahead of time. Califia is probably one of our favorite places for a great meal and excellent service. We recently celebrated our anniversary and enjoyed a delicious dinner. My wife had chicken milano (yum) and I had the pecan crusted salmon (yummy). The meal was delicious as always, and the presentation was beautiful. We capped off our meal with a churro desert with ice cream and caramel dipping sauce. I heard some food things and went there last night. The onion ring appetizer reason alone to go back. Service was excellent. We both had burgers which were really good. I think they season the beef with some herbs which gave them a unique and very tasty flavor. The fries were really good. My wife and I had a wonderful experience at Calafia in Livermore. Although it is an unassuming place (in a strip mall), with no real "atmosphere" to showcase the type of cuisine, the overall experience was GREAT! Everything we ate was fantastic from the first bite to the very last. Service was very good, we had a chance to speak with the owner and his daughter and we learned more about their style of cooking and their philosophy. A family run business - working hard together and preparing great food! A nice touch - they have nice tropical type flowers on the plates as a part of the presentation. At the end of the meal they offered us some of their home brewed coffee - an interesting (very good) taste: CAFÉ DE OLLA Mexican ground coffee brewed with cinnamon and piloncillo (raw cane sugar). read more

Ordered take out for the first time based on high reviews. Was very excited about extra crispy hash browns and all the rave reviews that I drove across town and was willing to pay $23+tip for a very basic breakfast burrito with bacon (and I think it was supposed to have cheese but it wasn't evident?). I asked for 1 extra salsa and was charged another $1 for a tablespoon of salsa that wasn't even special/worth the extra cost. They included what I think was a little thing of crema but it was curdled and inedible. The burrito barely had any eggs or bacon (it was essentially dry potatoes in a tortilla wrap). The "extra crispy" hash browns were soggy and swimming in a pile of grease in the container. Had stomach issues after. Very disappointing experience and meal for the price. When this place was suggested I was told it was Mexican food, but it's really only half that and so much more. The menu is very broad, and while it does boast Mexican food offerings, they also have burgers and sandwiches, pasta, and even jambalaya. A little surprising and confusing upon first glance. We ordered the honey lime prawns to start, and these were actually quite good. On the menu it said they came with 5, but we were delighted to see that they gave us 6 for our group of 3 to share. The prawns were big, full of flavor, and cooked to perfection. On that note, the service was great! Our server was so nice, eager to assist, and just overall welcoming and friendly. For my main I went with the California chicken sandwich and garlic fries. The sandwich was served on dutch crunch, which seemed new based on recent pictures of the sandwich on Yelp. Unfortunately the bread didn't really have any crunch to it, and there was A LOT of it. The bread to filling ratio was off for bread that wasn't that good. Though I didn't see it mentioned on the menu, I tasted some lime on the sandwich, which was a fun flavor addition. The garlic fries were the star of the main portion on the meal. They were super crispy and had a good amount of garlic, enough that you could taste it in each bite, but not too over powering. There was no real atmosphere here, the place was bright and clean, but didn't have anything that set it apart from any ole fast casual restaurant. I should have come for breakfast seems to be the theme here. I came for lunch and it was good. I opted for the 3 taco combo for $15 - fish, shrimp and chicken. They were hefty tacos and they were solid. My dining partners went with the sandwiches with garlic fries and again, quite substantial for the price. So the deal: it's more of a diner feeling with a menu that ranges from salads, to burgers, to mexican to pasta and so on. Usually, I'm a bit weary about those spots, but again, with the mentality it's more of a diner, it makes sense. Located in a strip mall, it has indoor and outdoor seating with lots of parking. I wouldn't say super ambient, but again, for a reasonably priced meal with larger sized portions, it's all good. Overall, a solid little spot. read more

Service: We were meeting friends here who had arrived before us and gotten a table for 4. We were not greeted or acknowleged when we entered even though the table was near the entrance. Our friends had their drinks so you would think someone would've noticed hey, the last 2 people in the party of 4 showed up, we should take their drink order. For at least 10-15 minutes, no one came over to ask if hubby and I wanted water. After waiting patiently, I finally got someone's attention to come over. Food: Calafia burger looked really good but unfortunately lacked seasoning. Patty was extremely bland. The garlic fries were delicious and would get those again. Huevos a la Mexicana: hubby liked his hash browns but the eggs lacked seasoning and flavor. Also, they only gave 1 flour tortilla. So I guess whoever is in charge of potatoes is doing a great job! Cafe de la olla: hubby enjoyed it and I was happily surprised to see this on the menu. On my way out, I saw the A-frame promoting their $5 mimosas. My best friend took me and her daughter to Calafia Kitchen for brunch on a Saturday around 12pm. The restaurant was pretty casual but trendier than your average diner. The place was busy, but we were able to get a table no problem. The food didn't come out as timely as I would've liked. It also didn't help that our main waitress first got the order of someone who came way after us even though we've been waiting on her to take our order. We had a brief positive interaction with the manager, who was friendly and helpful, which made up for the customer service. I liked that Calafia offered different types of mimosas. I got a Shirley Temple mimosa, which basicaly was a shirly temple I love chilaquiles, so I ordered it as my entrée. I chose red sauce over green sauce, which is an option, and I got mine with scrambled eggs. Overall it was a solid chilaquiles. The red sauce was flavorful and had a slight kick to us. The chips stayed crispy the majority of the time, and that's a huge plus for me. My friend ordered the Thai salad that she enjoyed. She was disappointed with her side of turkey sausage of which she described was like cardboard. I got a complimentary dessert for my birthday. I got the churros, which came out with a side of caramel sauce for dipping and vanilla ice cream with strawberry syrup. I did find the churros to be overly sweet. read more

Found this place just doing a quick Yelp search. I was in the area and looking for breakfast. I was sold on the cafe de olla and came in to eat. Service was quick and the waiter very attentive. The food took its time to come out, which is expected since everything was made fresh. The food was amazing, I had chilaquiles rojos and added meat with a cafe de olla. Everything was delicious and worth the price. Although I didn't take photos of my plate, I can tell you that what is pictured in the Yelp photos is on point and consistent. There's a full bar, drink menu looks amazing. The overall feel of the restaurant is just right, very photogenic without being overdone. Vasco area was in desperate need of a place like this. OK my wife and I discovered this recently, it's hidden away in a little corner of Springtown, Livermore, in an unassuming little strip mall which also houses the more well-known Hop Devine. We have been there for dinner twice, now. Both times I got the same thing - because they are so incredible - first, the onion rings appetizer. These are amazing. They are onion rings the size of small frisbees and they are perfectly battered, and the onions are tender and sweet (could be hawaiian sweet onions? not sure). I got the "Calafia Burger" - a signature item of theirs, which is two patties, bacon, grilled onions, pepperoncinis and cheese and it's freaking enormous and delicious. Finally, it comes with a side, first time I went there I ordered tater tots and it was kind of staggering how many they included on the plate. Second time I ordered cajun french fries, which were delicious (not too spicy - just zesty), and similarly - way more than I could eat. In fact, this is pretty impressive - I'm a 240 pound, approximately 6 foot three guy, and I cannot finish what they brought me. Calafia is a casual spot, comfortable, unpretentious. Nice place to bring your partner or family. We are going to try their brunch next. Staff is very friendly and very nice. We didn't try the booze menu but it looks good. Highly recommended. read more

However, their vibe and menu concept lacked Mexican authenticity. The decor and selection is overly Americanized - aside from a handful of dishes, the menu is seemingly 95% American. They don't even serve aguas frescas. Maybe they're catering to the demographic in the East Bay, but as a person of Mexican descent, the place has zero feeling of authenticity. I notice knowledge on the menu was also mentioned in a three star review. If indeed the veggies vary frequently, I think it's on the server to be able to answer that question. We've been waiting anxiously for this restaurant to open, as we live in the neighborhood across the street. The food here is delicious! The service is on point, we didn't have any kinks on day 3 of the restaurant open. We went at 8:30am on Sunday, so we had the place to ourselves, which was nice. The staff was super attentive, the food was beautifully presented and fresh, and my daughter loved it too! Highlights: The server recommended we try the Cafe de Olla, which is Mexican hot coffee with cinnamon and raw brown sugar brewed in - it was fantastic! Especially on these cold December mornings. Calafia Benedict: I love eggs benedict and I was pleasantly surprised with their dish. The hash browns were good and crispy and paired well with the meal. The Benedict was also delicious itself. The eggs were poached perfectly for me, oozing out when I broke them. The spinach was not wilted and the bacon was crunchy. My only downside was the hollandaise sauce. It did not stand out to me compared to other places I have eaten at. Still, a delicious meal. I am happy this placed opened up nearby where I work. The coffee was good. I ordered the breakfast burrito with chorizo. I attempted to customize the breakfast burrito, which in hindsight was a mistake. I have an aversion to eggs (I know it's weird). They burrito ended up solely having chorizo and cheese in it. The quality of the chorizo was good, the overall taste of the burrito was good. I didn't like that I asked for customization and got none. Another member of my party ordered similarly and got everything they requested. I felt as though the lack of communication from the staff was overall what created the issue. If there's confusion just ask. Also don't give someone a customization in the same party and not give the other person the same respect. read more
