Incredible food (served in full or half portions), craft cocktails (I had a tomato infused vodka martini), and a welcoming and friendly staff. When we arrived, the restaurant was just opening but not quite ready for guests, so one of the servers came out and chatted with us for a while. How many other places do this? Had a great meal here with family. We had a large group and service was timely and friendly. The food was mostly very good. They start you off with some warm fresh bread and butter that you have to be careful to not fill up on. We shared the truffle fries (if you like thousand island dressing you might like the sauce but it does have a kick to it), sushi roll, and a few large beet salads for the table. Salads were good and plentiful and I liked the dressing. I appreciate that Bistro Le Roux offers smaller and larger portions options for each of their mains. As this is not the norm at most American restaurants, it was a a little unclear to us whether that meant they are sharing plates or not but because most other restaurants give you too much food, ordering a small seems like a reasonable strategy unless you are either A) very hungry or B) sharing with a few members of your party. It's not cheap but this could be a good way to try different dishes. I tried the lobster risotto which was super creamy and came with a reasonable (but not overly generous ) amount of fresh lobster. The corn risotto was very good although it seemed like they had this same thing for a number of their menu items. My wife had the avocado crab salad dish, which was ok (my daughter commented that it was needlessly "fancy"), but the crab on its own would have been better. She thought her risotto was a little undercooked. We also got the corn chowder which was ok but lacked any real flavor and didn't feel worth the stomach space. The tomato bisque, a long-time staple of their menu, was much better and we really enjoyed it. For dessert we had the lava cake which was very rich and good. Without a doubt, one of the best meals we've ever had in the Lake George region! My friends and I split three appetizers: the beet and watermelon salad was spectacular, the crab cakes were wonderful, and the truffle frites were perfect. For entrees we did half portions of the short ribs of beef, the lobster risotto, and the scallops so we could try everything -- and we were beyond impressed with all of them. Great for a quiet family dinner, an intimate date, or a relaxed friends' gathering. We didn't feel rushed to leave, as we slowly savored our meal. This is a spot for relaxing and enjoying life. Extra shout out to the superb staff for finding my diamond earring (which I accidentally dropped in the booth where we dined) and saving it for me for pick up after more than a day. All the food was superb. You have a choice of either getting a large plate (entree size) or a smaller plate (appetizer size). Glad we listened to our waiter's advice and ordered multiple small plates to share. Definitely recommend that--instead of getting entrees, order multiple plates in smaller (appetizer) size and sample them all. What a treat! Have been here several times and everything is always amazing. The menu changes seasonally, so if you're a creature of habit then this might not be the place for you. The dishes are always creative, dynamic, and delicious. We started with cocktails I had a tomato martini (sounds weird, was incredible) and husband had a manhattan. Appetizers were crab cakes--fresh, crispy. I had the peach glazed pork chop that came with Parmesan risotto and he had the game meat mac and cheese. These are so hard to describe because I'm not a chef but they were phenomenal. The best part was dessert. We had the special--roasted strawberries and strawberry puree, coconut melange, vanilla sorbet with a crunchy coconut cookie and toasted coconut flakes. Greeted right as you walk in by several staff members. The ambiance is wonderful. Clean and quiet, and the service is excellent. The menu is different, in a good way. Not much has changed in ten years, and that is good. Because the things that haven't changed are the friendliness of the hostess and staff, the welcoming feeling, the availability of small and full portion sizes, and still having Ubu on their draft list. It's just difficult to believe that both of our visits were only in 2012. We were quite fortunate on this, once again, non-reservation-visit to not only score the last table available, but for it to be a high-top located at the edge of the kitchen service window, away from all the other diners. Once again, we had a wonderful view into the kitchen, even better than on our first visit, watching the kitchen staff working as a well-coordinated team meeting the demand of the evening's first rush with precision. And all those dishes looked delicious as the servers retrieved them. I started with a Von Trapp Pilsner ($9) from the half-dozen craft brews on draft. It was crisp and clean. My wife ordered a Blackberry Lemonade ($6) from their Mocktails. It was both tart and sweet as advertised, but she was surprised to find it had blueberries in it, even if it did have a blackberry syrup. It still was tasty. Once again, we decided to share a small Salad Special (small portion $12/full portion $23) Mediterranean couscous over spinach with kalamata and Spanish olives, cucumbers, and tomatoes with an Italian vinaigrette and feta cheese. It was refreshing and flavorful. We also shared a small Goat Cheese Encroute(sic.) ($12/$23). The chef obviously took some liberty in describing this dish as Madagascar vanilla & Bing cherry fondue with baguette. It may have met the "fondue" definition by virtue of the goat cheese having to have been melted at some point, and the "encroute" was a coating around the cheese, but it was not the expected pastry coating. But none of that mattered with the first taste. This was an absolutely delicious blend of flavors with our server Jackie explaining that the chocolate flavor we thought we detected was from the caramelization. Moving right along to our entrées, my wife chose the small Seared Sea Scallops ($19/$37) with prosciutto wrapped asparagus, and a sherry butter sauce served with sweet pea mashed potatoes and shaved Grana Padano. Two of the three scallops were cooked perfectly, the smallest of the three was very slightly underdone. Sign of a cautious chef? Overall, a delicious meal. I ordered the small Cabernet Braised Short Ribs ($19/$37). If this was "small" than I can only imagine how hungry a person would have to be to complete a full portion. The piece of short ribs was not only quite plentiful, but it was also very tender and flavorful. The hominy was soft without being mushy, and delicious with the addition of smoked Gouda and apple cider bacon. The crispy potato nest was actually a topping of perfectly crispy, finely seasoned, julienned fries. I barely saved room for dessert. But as Jackie listed the desserts, she mentioned that the chef who had developed the Salad Special that we thought was so outstanding, was also the chef who created the special dessert of the day - Tiramisu. Trusting in this chef's track record for the evening, I ordered the Tiramisu ($10). It was a pleasureful ending to dinner along with a good cup of coffee. I definitely recommend reservations, especially if you have a party bigger than two. Some of our favorites include the pomme frites, the poached pear salad, and the chicken Parmesan with risotto. This trip I changed it up a bit and opted for the vegetable risotto; a great vegetarian choice with summer-fresh veggies popping in bright colors against the creamy risotto. Family got the pork option with a peach glaze, the surf & turf, the swordfish, and the chicken Parmesan risotto for their entrees, and we also enjoyed the crab cakes, the ahi tuna roll, and pomme frites for our appetizers. However, the food was really underwhelming. It was disappointing and strange to be told they had no dinner specials, especially with the main menu being on the smaller side and it was a Saturday night. I had the small surf and turf and sadly it wasn't anything special. The steak was cooked slightly under what I had asked for and only one shrimp seemed skippy for the cost. My family of 8 had dinner here and were seated outdoors at a picnic table. It had been raining earlier that day, so they covered the benches with some sheets. Our area had very little lighting and we had to ask for a few candles so that we could see what was even on the table. The service was a bit slow, but the plating of the food was excellent. With such a limited menu, several of us had only 1 or 2 choices. So I order a watermelon salad with chicken. But they only have breaded chicken. Can't grill or pan fry a piece for me. So I order the summer vegetable salad with salmon. The salmon is insultingly small for $12. Oh. Yea. And my first bite delivered a hair. And the vegetables? YUM!!!! I'm incredibly picky when it comes to French onion soup, so when I saw this French restaurant I was very excited to try. It was the closest to my moms I've ever had out! Great flavor, onions were thin, but you could taste them, and the bread help it's own on the top. Really good! All our food- from soups to entree were both delicious. I especially loved the risotto that was under my pork chop, and the mango and corn salsa on top of it. The flavor combo was delicious. A bistro is essentially a casual small French type of restaurant that serves tasteful, inexpensive French traditional food. My Francophile father raised me in them. The dishes and menu are often homestyle, and tend to not be more than 7 options so as to keep it simple and thoughtful. So, all of the boxes were ticked but 2. It was a bit pricey for the small portions, and a bit more eclectic. I rather enjoyed my swordfish on a latticework of baby asparagus--opted in for my disinterest in the light pesto Italian style rice that was supposed to be the foundation (risotto). I would have thought it was all lovely if it were a bit cheaper. This is when I ask myself the inevitable question, could I have made it myself? I'm told by my wife, that the risotto was remarkable.
