Still lunch time, there we were quite a few tables open - not ever a good sign. I ordered the special cod and fries. Three of the four ordered meals showed up - not mine. We got server's attention but it took a while AND came with fries instead of the substituted spinach Maria. The server tried hard to get it correct. She did fine! My cod came out in some triangular format not bite-sized but not fillets either. The fish was mealy and tasteless. The spinach Maria, once a proud favorite, was just lousy. The cheese topping was burned but ok. The spinach was similar to baby food - mushy and tasteless. The server raised my rating up one star by trying hard. Just so u know there is an inside and outside menu.. If your looking for big meals go inside Outside is more apps and drinks BUT u get an amazing view right on the water In the Fall it must be perfect. Family of 5. Ordered a few things. Ribs, Pork BBQ, Burgers, and Brisket. All of it was tough and fatty. The waitress, Kaneisha was very inattentive. When not waiting on table she was sitting at booth with coworkers chatting. I got up and had to get our own straws. Took 4 visits to our table for me to get her attention to order a beer. We look forward to eating here a few time a year when in town. For next round of visits we are going to look for a new regular place. May try this place again in a year or so. His steak was decent, good flavor. My ribs were a bit dry, and I wasn't a fan of Calhoun's bbq sauce in the table caddy. (Also, is it safe for the sauce to be sitting out in the hot sun for hours?) If you've ever eaten the ribs at Houston's in Atlanta, don't bother ordering ribs anywhere else. I've tried so many disappointing ribs, I've vowed to stop ordering them except at Houston's. Calhoun's on the River. I think I liked Calhoun's... actually, I know I did. Great day with oldest daughter Jordan and the Granddogs, Elbert & Sally. I learned that Knoxville hosted the 1982 World's Fair, so we walked around the old fairgrounds and then down to the river. Beautiful area and a perfect day to just hang out. At Calhoun's, I loved our waitress, sitting out on the deck, my blackberry margarita, and the chicken tenders with honey mustard. The bacon-wrapped burnt-end brisket was tasty too, although a little dry. Maybe that's just part of being burnt ends. Honestly, I thought most of our food leaned a little dry for me -- except those chicken tenders. Maybe in Tennessee, the barbecue sauce is supposed to do more of the heavy lifting. The food was meh. Pulled pork was dry, salmon was served on the rare side, brisket burnt ends were dry. Large restaurant with no on paying attention to the details. There wasn't bread ready as they were busy on a saturday night. Unfortunately this felt like large scale pump out the food without proper attention to detail. The steak I ordered was cooked well but the side dish that came with the meal never came. The server had to be reminded multiple times to get the side dish. The draft beer system was serving warm beer. When you order a $28 dollar steak and don't get your side dish and there is a clear disconnect on a good service it leaves a lot to be desired. I really enjoyed my meal at Calhouns on the river. If you come here, you need to sit on the deck. There are shaded and sunny deck areas. The service was as expected. Calhoun's is a good BQQ and ribs restaurant in a great location on the river. It is casual and relaxed, but nice. We decided to eat at Calhoun's before a UT basketball game. The wait was 45 minutes, but we were able to grab a couple of bar seats pretty quickly. We ordered the Bacon-Wrapped Brisket Burnt Ends as an appetizer. It had really good flavor, but the meat was a little dry. I'd give this a 8/10 rating. For the meal, we spilt the Calhoun's Trio, which had ribs, pork BBQ , fried chicken strips and tater tots. The ribs were really good (8/10). The pork BBQ was good (7/10). The fried chicken strips were cooked well, but didn't have a lot of flavor (6/10). I don't leave many negative reviews, but this one just couldn't be ignored. This particular Calhoun's gets a ton of business because of proximity to campus, and it seems they really just don't care because they know they'll get fans coming in. A friend and I were going to a game awhile back and decided to grab dinner here beforehand. We got a booth in the bar area and placed our orders pretty quickly. I chose the cheeseburger and fries, while my friend selected the chicken tenders. It took ages for our food to arrive, and then my burger had no toppings (lettuce, tomato, onions, pickle, etc) - just a squirt of ketchup. Not even any fries. There was no real remedy to the situation because we couldn't find our server. Because of time constraints, we just ate as is. And then it took awhile to get our check and pay. We came here while we were in the area for spring break. Overall, it was nice having a table near the water and the food was pk. We had one member of our party where the server completely forgot to input one of the adult meals. His meal came out as the rest of us were finishing up. Not a huge deal but I was a bit surprised that he wasn't offered a discount or something to make up for the fact that his meal was just forgotten. Unfortunately I did not take any photos of our food, but we had 2 amazing flavorful salads. My wife had the Turkey Creek Salad which had Romaine and spinach with smoked turkey, sun-dried cranberries, honey roasted pecans, feta cheese, strawberries and honey balsamic vinaigrette dressing. The smoked turkey was full of flavor. Lettuce was fresh. Strawberries were surprisingly ripe in off season. The balsamic vinaigrette dressing was full of flavor. I had the Smokehouse Salad which had Grilled chicken, country ham, bacon, tomatoes, egg, onion and cheese with honey mustard dressing. The country ham on this salad was amazing. Still had to wait 10 minutes because they were "cleaning tables", but okay. Got seated, waiter took our order pretty quickly, but then the wait started. Had to ask for silverware and bread. I guess our order was complicated--a house salad and a fried chicken salad. We waited at LEAST 45 minutes for it. Waiter kept apologizing and said he would have his manager come speak to us. My wife and I were in town for a wedding and decided on Calhoun's because it was where we had our first date 32 years ago. This time was a little disappointing. The menu for the deck is more limited than inside the restaurant, but we still got some amazing food items. Fantastic location near downtown Knoxville on the River. We were greeted immediately by the host and even quicker by our super friendly server. It was a cold non game day so we had a great seat indoors overlooking the water but we were told come game days there could be a several hour wait and that their parking lot is rented out so please keep that in mind. I have the Veggie Burger and it was delicious- they took a different spin with Monterey Jack, Avocado and their own aioli and it was a nice change! (My thanks to the chef) I've been a vegetarian just over 8 years and this meal sat well with me which means the kitchen does a great job with eliminating cross contamination- it's so nice when that's the case! I get it, the place is on the river, near campus. And if you are going there for drinks and want a nice scenery, or a place to pre-game, I am sure this place is great. But the food is so awful, just awful, specially the one sold and served from the deck. What they call bbq is a crime, it's worse than Dickeys bbq. If you buy the BBQ trio, one of the meats is pulled pork. They apparently don't know that bbq should be smoked, and have a taste. You know, from a rub. Bucce's makes better food. Never coming here for food. And hire some help, the place is too big for the three servers . The host had to help clean tables, which then delayed sitting guests. read more

The sweet potatoes were cold and greasy. The "barbecue" brisket was more fat than meat. The closest the brisket came to barbecue was the little container than was served with the BBQ. Nearby tables sat with dirty dishes waiting for the servers to buss the table which made the service slow. This was the first time we'd been to this location and we automatically assumed our dinner would be great because at other locations we had no complaints. The food at this location was horribly over cooked. 2 ordered chicken, 1 salmon, 1 pork chop all incredibly dry and tough. None of these guests finished their meal. The guests who ordered steaks were not unhappy. Medium rare came out medium rare. We had to ask for water and when I asked the server she asked if everyone wanted water. We asked for water when we ordered our beverages. This request was a reminder to her that we had never gotten our original request. Our bar orders were very slow and our server must have been super busy because we didn't see her very often. We were not impressed with our service or the food. Sadly, we cannot recommend Calhoun's on the River. Hard pass on this location - all of the other locations are great. read more

My wife got the Hickory burger medium and it was good; my son had the Kickback burger medium-well and I had the Kickback burger medium. Their tater tots are amazing! Unfortunately, my burger was ULTRA RARE, I mean severely rare. I did not catch it until I removed the bun. I called our waiter over and asked if that was medium, his response was, I can make it medium. I am not sure of that burger was cooked more than a minute. May be a controversial opinion, but I believe Calhoun's is a little overrated. While the service is generally solid (typically a rotating door of college and high school students), there are times where you're waiting for the check, wondering if your food got lost, or are just served the wrong order (but then again, these things happen). As a vegetarian, there are very few options that are worth the price or hassle-- there's a very "fine" veggie burger, a Caesar salad that has tasted spoiled on occasion, and a kid's grilled cheese. The ambiance is generally solid-- there's great trivia and singo nights, and you can't beat catching a Vols game on the river. I will say-- the bread is PHENOMENAL, their garlic knots and beer muffins in particular. Calhouns just is not my thing! read more

Went to this Calhoun's on Tuesday 7/21/26. Been there a few times before and had no problems, not this night. Starting we had a new waitress Taylor, it appears she had little to no training, this was her first night so we cut her some slack. First round of drinks were incorrect. She seemed overwhelmed with having 4 tables. One table was having so much trouble with her, their order, the food they got up and left when everything went south for them. Anyway our food orders (4 people) were half screwed up and late, delivered to the table cold, missing sides so they were returned. Ask to see the manager (Dale) he stopped by didn't apologize for anything and said we'll take the items off the bill, had a really bad attitude and a lousy personality. Finally ate what was edible and got the bill. There were items double charged, ask to be corrected, next bill still had items double charged. Between the problems with the kitchen, the waitress and the manager we will never return to the place and I suggest you don't either. We tipped the waitress as normal, but the real problem was the manager as we talked to him on the way out and he was stone-faced and did not respond to any of the issues we brought up, a miserable human being who really needs to find another line of work. read more

We have even gone on Thanksgiving a couple of years and that was great as well. I would not suggest eating on the outdoor eating area.
