I finally made it to the newest Cali Fish Grill in Riverside and I was not disappointed! My first time trying their butter sauce was at their location in LA. And I have to been making the drive forever and a day just to get that delicious taste. But, luckily for me the Riverside location is open and amazing. Everything tasted fresh and exactly like it did the first time I fell in love with it. I had the Mahi Mahi plate with butter sauce, rice and brussel sprouts with a side of dynamite fries. Literally no complaints about anything on the plate. You can expect a little more than a 10 minute wait for your food. But duh it's freshly made and totally worth it. The fish was perfectly cooked, tender and flaky. And my goodness the brussel sprouts were more than delicious. I will definitely have to add on an additional side of those on my next visit. The restaurant is very clean, including the restrooms. The service was friendly and helpful. I loved seeing the manager pitching in and boxing to go orders and running food out. There was great team work going on! Another thing that stood out was the soda machine, there were a variety of specialty sodas that's were offered including pineapple cream and blood orange! I'm visiting from out of state and was craving salmon so found this place when I searched the Internet and gave it a try. Was greeted by cashier/order taker and he was kind enough to recommend side dish of corn with my rice and salmon. Given a buzzer to notify me when order was ready and it didn't take long at all. Portion was huge and cooked perfectly. Definitely will go back soon and try more items. We have come to this location multiple times with no problems. However, I have some new dietary restrictions and asked the staff questions about how they prepare some of their dishes, such as ingredients added. The lady we asked looked like a manager, and degradingly told us, "they're sautéed... in a pan..." (with sautéing hand motions) so when we clarified and asked about specific ingredients, she still rudely listed the seasonings used. She seemed inconvenienced by our question, despite the store being empty tonight. Not sure if it was a bad day for her, but it rubbed us off. We looked at the California Fish Grill website prior to visiting, but as I am on a FODMAP diet, there are more specific restrictions I have to adhere to so we decided to ask in store. I have never left a review before (good or Karen), but this was the worst service I've ever experienced. First time here with a friend who is doing keto, and excited about the keto-friendly options. It was her first time eating out since April. We arrived around 7:45 and the outdoor seating area was empty and no customers were eating inside so we were not sure if they were still open. I understand Covid times are tough, but there were no customers so it was not an issue of demand. There were at least 3 front servers standing around, and I saw 3 chefs in the back. The cashier/server just stared at us until we told her we'd never been before so we're checking out the menu. (I also understand mask talking/listening is a bit tricky.) We both ordered Atlantic salmon, zucchini, and upgraded to asparagus. The fish was delicious, but we paid an additional $2 for a total of 3 asparagus spears per plate and a measly amount of zucchini. We also ordered 2 glasses of sauv blanc, which were listed as $5.99/glass on the menu. When the order rang up, they came out at $6.25/glass, so we asked about the discrepancy. After another worker claimed it was just the taxes, we checked the receipt and it was not the taxes. The original worker said, "Hm, sorry." Our total for the meal was around $48. After my friend had taken our wine out to the front, I picked up our cups of water and she said, "Oh you have to drink in the back, we don't have a liquor license for the front." We had never been there and the whole restaurant is closed off inside, and I was so confused. So I asked, "Wait we can't drink our wine and eat at the same time?" She said, "No, you can just go to the back patio." and did not even gesture to where it was so I wandered around a bit confused til i saw another door behind the bathrooms. We were sitting back there and the same server pokes her head out and says that our food is ready. (Later another couple was on the back patio and they had their food brought to them so we left a bit confused regarding policy.) I went inside to pick up our food and asked the same server if we could just buy out the rest of the bottle which rang up as $21, since we had already paid $14 (with a $1 tip) for 2 small glasses. She said, "Uh I don't know I can't do anything like that I'd have to ask my manager," and just stared at me, so I asked her if she could ask (had to ask twice because she either didn't hear me or didn't want to, just said "uhhhh" while she continued to stare). She finally said yeah, and I thanked her and went outside to wait and eat. She never asked and never came out to notify us, and we did not see her again when we left. It was such a sad experience for our first time out in so long. We were glad the fish was tasty, but for $48 we could have stayed home and made more of the same dish, with a whole bottle of wine, at home for less than $30, and with better service. Went for the plant based options. The cashier got confused because the plant based options are the same as the meat options except the names have quotes like "fish" and " shrimp". It took a while for her to get what I wanted when I read the menu item to her. I asked what the mock meats were made of and no one could tell me. We were at the Tyler Mall close by and ordered online. The ordering process was very simple and straightforward. I was surprised that the food was ready in the 10-15 minutes it took us to get there!! Talk about fast service! To-go orders are placed on the shelves next to the counter sealed and ready to go. The food was delicious, flavorful, fresh and did not disappoint.
