Came here for a business lunch. California Pizza Kitchen is more or less what you'd expect from a casual dining chain. The service was friendly, and I want to give a special shoutout to our server, who was genuinely kind and super friendly. That said, the biggest issue was the wait time for the food. It took nearly an hour for our food to come out. I'm not sure if it was because we had a party of seven, but for a restaurant located in a business district, you would expect food to be served a little more efficiently so people can get back to work on time. Caesar Salad with Grilled Chicken (2/10) - There was barely any dressing and the grilled chicken was very dry. Burnt End Pizza (6/10) - The dough tasted a bit like frozen store-bought crust, and the sauce felt lacking both in flavor and quantity. The burnt ends themselves were tender and flavourful. I'm not someone who writes many reviews unless I'm either really impressed or really disappointed. A friend and I were out exploring and decided to try somewhere new. We jokingly said, "Let's go somewhere that starts with the letter C," and ended up at a brand-new California Pizza Kitchen less than two miles from my house. I had no idea it had even opened. Unfortunately, now I understand why. We were greeted and seated by a very friendly hostess, but after that we were completely ignored. The restaurant was about 90% empty, so it definitely wasn't because they were overwhelmed. Guests who were seated after us were greeted, given water and drinks, and one gentleman even received his food before anyone had come to our table to offer us service. We tried making eye contact with our server, who was literally talking to the table right behind us, but he walked away without acknowledging us. I'm usually happy to give a restaurant a first, second, and even third chance because I know everyone has an off day. But this experience missed the mark. Despite the convenient location, we won't be back. We left and went to Islands instead, where we were greeted and served within seconds of sitting down. A reliable CPK in Laguna Niguel area. Parking free and easy. But you really need to watch out for the kids loitering dealing drugs or coming and going with their e-bikes. The service is ok. Not friendly or exactly hospitable. Order is seldom ever ready upon arrival even if placed well ahead of time. Something to keep in mind. I wouldn't sit down and eat inside but that's just me. That being said, the food quality is consistent. The pastas and pizzas are usually cooked without any missing ingredients or issues. Update: Tonight we came in for dinner and left very disappointed. Upon walking in we stood waiting to be seated for far too long. A woman was by the terminal near the kitchen talking but yet we waited. Finally one of the servers came to seat us. Our server tonight left us feeling very forgotten. There were only two servers. One named Gavin who was great and served us in the past. But tonight our server was another guy. I don't think it was personal as I watched him and he was working way too many tables. But we really felt forgotten. Took a long time to order our food, no checking on us to see if we wanted a refill of our water, no checking to see how the food was, couldn't get him back to ask for a box so ended up asking the other server. The pizza was delicious as it always is. This is the sole reason why the rating is not 2 stars. After 2 less than desirable experiences here and we will not be returning. We called to order 2 pizzas. On hold for 25 minutes. When someone finally answered, we ordered the pizzas. She said it will be 20-25 minutes. We came 20 minutes later, walked into the phone order pickup area, waited for another 25 minutes and no one came up to help us. One guy came from the back and we told him we're here to pick up our pizzas, and pointed at the boxes with my name on it. He took the boxes and moved them across and away, to the other side of the counter. Like we were going to take them and ran away. Hilarious! Then said someone will help you. We continued to wait. Almost 10 minutes later, a younger gal came up. Told her we need to pick up our pizzas. She had to call the manager up and they finally helped us. Now I understand why this place gets a whole bunch of solid 1-star reviews. Frustration! People had no more patience and tolerance for the slow service. I'm always amazed, at least recently, at the high quality & interesting food at CPK. This one is especially good. They used to have a roving service robot but apparently it is kaput. Our service was excellent &, if you go to the specific location ask to be seated & served by Camden. Even though she is a California woman & never been to NJ she is a pro as a sever. What a joke! First time since they opened, wanted to see the Stanley Cup playoffs/game 4. 6 people at the bar for happy hour. Slower than slow service, when it came time to pay, the entire bill was wrong. Other than one time no HH prices. The manager had to fix everything only to find out she missed two more items. When I asked the bartender how hard can it be to charge HH prices at HH time, when they do this everyday, her answer was "they want us to suffer". First and last time here to say the least... won't be surprised if this location will not survive for a very good reason! read more

Hadn't been to a CPK in a hot minute! Our server was great. Food came out fresh and everyone was happy. Bread came out warm. Prices have gone up but that's pretty standard everywhere. The bahn mi bowl is really tasty and healthy. It comes with lots of fresh veggies and the sauce is delicious. Next time I'm 100% asking for more sauce, because it ran out quick! This may be my new go to here. The burger & fries (these cheesy potato fries!!!!) is good too! The kids pizza is simple, but yummy. It's a pretty good portion for a kid too. The butter cake! My last two visits to CPK were mediocre at best, but this time, it reached a new low. This recent visit to the CPK was a mixed bag, leaning heavily toward disappointing. I had hoped that things might have improved since my last experience, but unfortunately, that wasn't the case. When we arrived, the hostess at the front - whose name, I believe, was Elle - looked completely uninterested. Either she really didn't want to be there, or she was having a bad day. Whatever the case, it wasn't exactly a warm welcome. Elle led us to a booth tucked away at the far end of the restaurant. As we sat down and with no encouragement from me, AR leaned in and whispered, "Did you catch that weird vibe?" while glancing back at the hostess walking off. It was undeniable. To make matters worse, the table hadn't been properly cleaned; crumbs and oily smudges were still there from the previous diners. I ended up grabbing some napkins to wipe it down myself - fail. The portion sizes have been reduced exponentially. I ordered chicken piccata at this location several times (fine-I'm and pick up). The take out container is smaller and the food portions are much smaller YET the price has not reduced. Very disappointed. Asked two employees , one was a supervisor he said, 'no they've always been that size'. I didn't really want to go have pizza tonight by myself. Wanted to go to CPK.. I didn't want piece of pasta so I just started perusing the menu and I saw that they have a hamburger. I'm like okay, I'll go for it. Let me tell you this is one of the most f****** delicious cheeseburgers you'll eat. It was a smash patty with cheese bacon crumbled up on it. Lettuce tomato pickles in it delicious sauce. I got it with a side salad. Excellent! It was my 79th birthday, and we had gone out for breakfast. My husband offered to take me ANYWHERE for dinner. After thinking hard, ALL I wanted was a CPK Italian Chopped Salad because our Laguna Woods store was closed years ago, and I had craved it ever since then (not realizing that Door Dash delivered from nearby). Everything was Perfection with our salads and a side Marguerita pizza. LAGUNA NIGUEL store obviously focuses on FRESH salads, (and I say this because sometimes our former Laguna Hills Mall store had rusty limp lettuce in their take-out Chopped Salads.) Wonderfully crunchy with their tasty Mustard Vinaigrette dressing, we both agreed: now that we can use Door Dash to deliver, the Laguna Niguel restaurant will be receiving regular and often Door dash orders from us. They are new, so I had to cut them a little bit of slack ... The food was great. I have to say we came in to watch the game. Sad at one of their high top tables perfect view of the game nice ambience we brought our own wine even though they have some pretty nice IPAs on tap. First, I signed up for the CPK rewards. On the app it says "get a free starter". Little did I know, they only give you the option for the worst starters (not all the starters). They should be more specific about that. Second, the $15 starter we do get, the avocado egg rolls, have less filling in 2/6 of them. They fortunately noticed this while serving it and immediately put in an order to fix the poorly put together- two egg rolls. This took about 20 minutes to arrive at our table- just the two egg rolls lol. Third, we asked the server multiple times for napkins. Pretty much our hands were all greasy for the whole dinner experience. Not once were we asked if we wanted a refill on our soda. Fourth, we ordered a Neapolitan pizza- which we didn't know but the cheese is served cold on top. So it's essentially a cold pizza- which isn't what I was expecting coming to a Brick oven style pizza place. Lastly, the ambiance was cold. The waiter himself was too busy locking up for the night. The rest of the team looked like they were inconvenienced by our presence/ since we were the last ones in the place. For example, as we walked about, a short Hispanic lady looked at us leave - made eye contact- and didn't even say bye or goodnight. We kept getting dirty looks from most of the staff. Greeted nicely Sat to table within 10 minutes Drinks within 5 minutes Orders taken quickly after Food arrived within 15 minutes or less During 30 minutes of consumption, we were checked on about 5 times! I was around before franchising and when the original CPK opened by the attorneys in the 80's! The menu has grown for sure but still same great tastes! I don't like the amount of salt in the dishes, super high sodium, but it doesn't taste salty. Definately not healthy food. We ordered the Thai spaghetti and Thai salad, both yummy. All of the staff worked hard and all very nice! Hope this location stays longer than the last 2, it's in the same parking lot as In and Out, so very annoying to navigate around that traffic! at the end though, we were given sealed coupons with a mystery discount offer in it that could only be opened by a manager not on the same day given. We ate here last night and we came here because my mom wanted a salad. I planned to order the pasta. To be specific it was the broccoli chicken fusilli I've always ordered. So, we arrive and have to wait to be seated. No problem. I checked the menu. I asked the hostess if they still had the pasta I wanted and she said you can ask your waiter when you're seated. While my drink order my mom wanted was hot tea. He says they don't have hot tea. It was cold and didn't bring a jacket and we both wanted a hot drink. What???!!! You don't have hot tea and you're a restaurant. I ordered passion fruit iced tea and my mom had water. I'm just really hungry at this point and he asks if we'd like some bread so I said "yeah." Bread was good and warm. I forget all about the pasta I came in for. I order a mushroom pizza and chopped chicken salad. Salad pricey, and pizza pricey. First off, a huge shout out to our server, Jay, who made sure we were not without anything, and gave great service throughout this busy evening. Thanks, Jay!! The food was much better than the Mission Viejo location. The pizza we usually get, Chipotle Chicken Pizza, was more fresh tasting and super flavorful. The always fave, Avocado Egg Rolls were the best, crispy and delicious. Always get their Passion Fruit Mango Iced Tea, unsweetened but super refreshing. The ambiance was clean, and I like this floor plan way better. I like the layout of where the round bar is located. The place is a little smaller than MV. I'd say, if you love CPK and you're a local, this location is worth a try. I had a very positive experience here, and it gets packed by 6pm, so come early if you can. Ok, I had previously left a 5 star on this location but after the last 3 experiences I'm seeing some common trends at this place. First, giving credit where credit is due, the kitchen staff do a good job and the food is the kind of good casual dining stuff you would expect from CPK. Pizza crusts are tasty and I love the wood fired nature of it. Now let's talk about dining and the overall functioning on the service. Tonight I walk in, hostess was off seating someone and I notice the a/c vent above the hostess station is leaking. She comes and takes us back to a table directly behind the hostess station and we pointed out to her the table was wet, she wiped it down, but then I pointed out to her it was likely wet from the vent above it. She acknowledged it and we waited for another table. As we walked past to the new table we noticed the table was wet again. What I found odd though was that after us she seated another diner at the same table below the leaky vent - 5 mins later the diner is complaining about water leaking on her. I couldn't understand why the hostess would do that to a customer when she knew there was an issue. That's poor customer service. Hostess aside, service from our server was minimal - we weren't really checked on aside from the meal being delivered. I think there were maybe only two servers for the whole meal place. I went off looking for straws because none were offered and gave my typical CPK rewards check in info to the server. Usually they should let you know that you have awards - but he didn't. After the check arrived I needed to remind him I had rewards to redeem, which he then did. He then gave me a bill to sign with no pen, so I had to ask another server for her pen. There's also something odd about bussing tables - the servers NEVER bother to pick up plates from the table. I don't know why but I've seen this across multiple servers and I don't know why management doesn't address it. It's terrible to sit there with dirty plates and then try to eat dessert. The one busser in the whole place only cleans tables after people leave and works his ass off hauling around a broken robot where he stacks the dishes on. All in all - food is fine, they have a great location, but they really need to have a closer look at service here and staffing up and trying to up standards a bit. The longest wait for take out I've ever experienced. My food was said to be ready by 6:20, and I had to go inside and waited until 6:50. I called and they said they'd bring my order out to the parking spot, but I had to go in and it was just sitting there. If you like clean restaurants with good food, this is not the place to go to. For starters, this place is disgusting. If you look at the decor and some of the fixtures attached to the booths, they are raining dust. It looks it was not cleaned since the restaurant opened. For a place called " California Pizza Kitchen", you'd think they'd have more than 5-6 pizzas. Not to mention, the pizza was paper thin and not even cooked all the way through. How is that even possible? We ordered two different pizzas and they were both like that. The jambalaya was also nearly flavorless. The accessibility wasn't so bad. They have the tables spread out enough to wheel through without bumping into anyone or disturbing other customers. There were no stairs but not enough handicap parking so if you're going at a busy time then you are out of luck. The doors don't automatically open either. The one saving grace for this place was the waitress. Coleen was one of the best waitresses that we have ever had at any restaurant. This waitress was going around to all of her tables at least twice as much as the rest of the waitresses. We didn't even have to ask for refills, they just appeared. She should be promoted and she should be training the rest of the waitresses. If this review was based on service alone, it would be 5 stars. My LO loves their pizza. We always stop here for celebratory dinners. Service is decent. Food tastes great. We order their meat lovers pizza, thai chicken salad half (my favorite) and avocado egg rolls. So yummy. I have tried pasta before and preferred not to eat pasta here.
