It had been so long since I've eaten at California Pizza Kitchen. Years ago it had been a lunch favorite. We had just finished seeing a musical theater production at Town Center and lingered quite some time visiting with old friends. The restaurant on the plaza with the theater had closed. So we decided to exit the parking garage for street level parking, which was available when the shops and most restaurants had closed. After doing a quick search on Yelp for restaurants still open, we chose California Pizza Kitchen. It was the same familiar CPK layout. Service was good. We were immediately seated and provided menus and the option to order beverages. My choice of Peach Iced Tea was not a normal thing for me except at CPK. They have the most wonderful Peach Iced Tea on the planet. When served I learned that still was the case. They also offer free refills and even a "to go" cup of,it after dining. There is a full bar which offers basic and their signature cocktails. The menu had changed slightly since I had frequently visited on a regular basis. One of the salads had always been my choice, actually a half salad. The whole salads are more than any one human being could eat. I scanned the salad titles, recognizing only one. I should have read the entire description since my friend proclaimed hers very good. My choices were narrowed to a pizza with lots of Avocado and a pasta dish. I ordered the Chicken Tequila Fettuccine, which was presented well. It was good but not great. The Spinach Fettuccini overwhelmed the amount of chicken and other ingredients. My Rewards App was still active after all these years and I received a limited promotion offer. Checkout was on a handheld device the server brought to the table, which was a great improvement since I last was there. Returning to CPK will be sooner rather than later. It's a nice option for when other Town Center Restaurants have closed. read more

Summertime always brings us to California Pizza Kitchen to have a nice meal out. Today, the restaurant was moderately busy, so I'm not sure what the extended delay was in our meals coming out. Luckily we could enjoy the fresh bread with seasoned dipping oil while we waited. The Arnold Palmer that I like to order on a hot summer day like today was very good. This location at Virginia Beach Town Center is always clean. The decor is nice, especially the framed, painted pizza boxes that accent the walls. While our server was friendly, my salmon order came out as the wrong dish. So, I had to wait for my salmon dish on the new limited time menu to be corrected. It was good, but unfortunately I had to eat it after my family had already finished their pasta dishes. Although the hiccup in my order won't stop us from returning, it might be a factor on when we decide to some back. read more

This was my first time at a California Pizza Kitchen. My coworkers and I ordered food here on our lunch break. I was a little nervous at first because I have a dairy allergy and wasn't sure if there was going to be something I could eat there, but I saw that they had salad, sandwich, and soup options that didn't include dairy. We were warmly greeted when we walked in and were seated in a nice shaded spot outside. Our waitress, Anita, came out to greet us and take our orders. I ordered a soup and salad from the lunch special menu. Anita double-checked to make sure the soup and salad options I was interested in didn't have dairy, which I appreciated. I got the split pea soup and Thai salad, which were both delicious and filling. When we were ready to pay, Anita showed each of us our orders bill on the tablet and asked if it all looked correct. Mine wasn't correct, but Anita quickly corrected it. And I appreciate that she asked each of us if the bill was correct to make sure. It's been a long time since I've eaten at California Pizza Kitchen. After leaving the theater in the Town Center area, we decided to give California Pizza Kitchen a try and we were not disappointed. We were greeted and seated immediately. Our waitress came and took our drink orders ( their peach tea is amazing ) and left us to look over the menu. The. Restaurant was not busy at all when we arrived. I chose the Crispy Chinese Dumpling Salad. Golden fried chicken dumplings, shaved Napa and red cabbage, cucumber strips, carrots, scallions and fresh cilantro. Tossed in their housemade honey-miso dressing with toasted sesame seeds, topped with a drizzle of Mr. Bing Chili Crisp. My daughter and I came here on a late Wednesday afternoon. They weren't busy, so there was no one to greet or seat us immediately. When someone recognized we were standing there, a hostess came out and seated us. Our sever was awesome. She gave us plenty of time to decide on our orders and even took the time to suggest a few items and make us mindful of their happy hour specials. We decided on the Bang, Bang Shrimp appetizer. I didn't think to take a pic before we crushed them! The order came with about 10 fried shrimp, tossed in a sweet and spicy sauce, garnished with sesame seeds, served atop a bed of what I think was coleslaw mix. So good!!! For our meals, my daughter chose the Barbecue Chicken pizza and I chose the Thai Chicken pizza. If you like to try things that away from the norm and enjoy spicy sweet flavor, I'd recommend you give the Thai Chicken pizza a try! Both were good, but I do think they were a little pricey for the size....*Sidebar -I really wish they would bring back their Shrimp Scampi pizza! First time at CPK and it was a bit of a letdown after a long track meet . We were told 15 minutes, ended up waiting 45 - understandable if they were slammed, the were pretty empty for a Sunday night at 6:25pm but maybe a smaller group would've been better. Our server followed protocol, taking drinks first, then food, but we had a 4-hour drive ahead and made that clear to the host. Kids got restless, and one guest even bailed when we couldn't order food with drinks. We stuck it out, but the experience killed the mood. I was actually surprised that it wasn't busier. Our server came over to the table Right away, and offered us water and asked if we were ready to place an order for drinks. We replaced our order. I had ordered the chicken dumplings which I've had at the CT location. I actually liked them a lot when I had them there so I was excited to have them again my friend and I ordered a pizza as well and she ordered an appetizer to. I can't recall what her appetizer was. When I got my appetizer, I went to take a bite and it tasted funny like it was bad. It was a really weird taste that was offputting took a while before the server came back. I informed him or I should say I tried to inform him that something was wrong he took the plate so quickly and brought it back to the kitchen never asking if I wanted something else or if I wanted them to re-cook them never making mention of anything. Honestly, it seemed like he was upset. That changed the whole tone of the visit. The pizza came out shortly after the pizza was very good had a lot of flavor. It was just smaller than I anticipated it would be. I am on the fence about this location. I might attempt to try it again and hopefully have a different server the server had some sort of attitude and I can sense it when I watched him with other tables as well. The staff here are all rock stars! We came on Veteran's Day (spouse of a vet) for the sweet deals for the military and vets. The place was a zoo but all the staff handled the chaos with grace and professionalism. Our server, Brian could not have been more welcoming! And the folks at the host stand need a raise! They handled the seating of the crowd out the door like pros. There were JROTC students at the door greeting everyone as well. The staff at California Pizza Kitchen always provide excellent service. the workers I've experienced in the past year have had a positive, customer first attitude. I've dined in a few time in the past enjoying their flatbreads and pizzas. The buffalo cauliflower bites were a bit too hot for me but my mother enjoyed them. Lately I've been getting take-out for my orders. I've been favoring the desserts. The butter cake is always a winner, it is dense, rich, and incredibly sweet. If getting it to go, ensure your whipped cream is on the side. Lately I've switched to the delicious but less sweet red velvet cake. CPK is a great spot for lunch weather dining alone or with friends. There is plenty of space and tons of seating here. read more

It is not as sweet as a soda. IT is much more refreshing and I could drink these all night. *Desert Pear Lemonade - Is visually stunning. Very pink when it comes to the table with a beautiful fresh sprig of mint. IT is tart and not carbinated. It is a good lemonade. If you like tart you will like this drink. Pizza is good. We get all of them and have been very saticfied. Consistantly good. The pasta is steaming hot and like comfort food. The burgers and potatoe planks are awesome. *Spinach artichoke dip is so good. I think I could get that just as a meal, My only complaint it is a bit small. Plenty of chips but not enough dip. But it could be because we all like it so much. Came here for lunch on Saturday afternoon so it was pretty busy but our table of 5 got sat right away. We had a wonderful waitress - Dilan. She was so sweet. Everyone got pasta - fettucine alfredo, shrimp scampi with zucchini and I got the Kung Pao spaghetti. The other people we were with came here just so they could get the shrimp scampi because they say it's the best around. That's a big compliment. My Kung Pao spaghetti was spicy and good. If you can't do spicy then do not get this meal. I am not sure if bread comes with the meals or if you have to ask or you pay for it but I wish we had some bread. Our water was never empty. The dining room has plenty of sitting, is bright and clean. If I go back I would want to try the pizza. They do have a rewards program and if you sign up you get a free appetizer but not that day unless you sign up ahead of time. read more

Met a few family members here for dinner on a Sunday evening. It wasn't very busy so we were seated quickly. Placed our drink and food orders and then received the complimentary bread with oil and herbs. I loved the warm bread and we even asked for more (... more than once lol!) Our server was attentive and friendly. I didn't get pictures of all of the food but we ordered mainly pasta dishes like the chicken piccata. We also got the salmon and a half portion Caesar salad. Everything was pretty good, we didn't have any leftovers if that says anything! We also took advantage of the Take & Bake option. My 300th Yelp Review Mom decided to finally use a CPK gift card she received years ago since she was nearby... that and she was in the mood for pizza. She ordered the Thai Chicken pizza (she never said she wanted a traditional pizza!), which comes with Thai peanut sauce & mozzarella, is hearth-baked and topped with bean sprouts, julienned carrots, scallions & cilanto. I tried a slice - the crust was a little tough, but overall a tasty pie. Personally, I was curious to try the Avocado Club Egg Rolls, which are wonton rolls filled with avocado, chicken, tomato, Monterey Jack & Nueske's applewood smoked bacon. It was maybe the best CPK item of the lot, although to-go egg rolls mean they'll be a little soggy. My entree was the California Caprese, which comes with Roma tomatoes, fresh basil, cucumbers, mozzarella & a homemade lemon herb vinaigrette. You can order it with turkey, too, which we did. But alas, they forgot to add the turkey. The sandwich was good, but that turkey would've really set it off. CPK is fine. Service for to-go was a little slower than my mother would've liked, and the missing turkey was disappointing. Stopped by for lunch on Friday with my kid and grandma. We got the Lunch Duos, Sangria (Happy Hour M-F, 3-5), and Butter Cake with Ice Cream. Jonathan was a great server as he made sure we were good to go and kept the little one entertained lol. It's always pretty quiet when I come here but the food was good and came out quickly. I ordered two lunch combos. 7" BBQ Chicken pizza and Mushroom and pepperoni pizza with tomato soup. Everything tasted excellent. The pizza had good amount of toppings and cheese on. The crust was perfect for dipping in the soup. The soup had the right amount of tangy taste without it being too heavy. But the portion sizes were sad. I understand it's lunch sized combo but the side bread for the soup made me feel extra extra sad. It was basically a piece of bread cut in half for two people. Go look at it in the picture and tell me how that's not sad. And it was extra sad because it actually also tasted great and I would have loved to at least have a whole slice for myself!! Anyhow, the next time I'm in town, I ought to try ordering everything in full sizes. A few months ago we were downtown VA Beach. Initially, we tried the Yardgouse, but they had an 1.5 hour wait time. Nope! We walked down a bit and found an Italian joint. Same thing. Next! We then see this restaurant across the street and decided to give it a try. Jackpot! We were seated right away! The server, Jasmine, was pretty awesome. She was very attentive and informative. She made awesome suggestions and actually heard me everytime I said "Excuse me." This may seem like it's not a big deal, but I'm well aware of how hard it is to get someone's attention sometimes. I appreciate the fact that I didn't have to try so hard with her. The starter bread and oil dip is not really my cup of tea, but my husband enjoyed it. I started with the Strwberry Lime Margarita and thought it was pretty good. We had "The Works" pizza and substituted the peppers for ham. It was really good. I am ashamed to say this, but this is my FIRST time experiencing CPK. What is wrong with me? You all knew it was this good and just didn't tell me? We Ordered two "loaded" focaccia breads--smashed avocado and the hot honey bee. The vegan in me was in LOVE after one bite of that crunchy twist on "avocado toast". Now I'm a snob when it comes to my avocado toast. The topping had to be as warm (or even hotter than the bread). And this CPK focaccia was spot on! My only complaint is that it didn't come pre-sliced (like the hot honey bee did). Trying to slide this crunchy bread with a knife brought to the table by my server on a dinner plate was a recipe for disaster! It was too hard, the plate was too slippery,and I had to catch my food from becoming a projectile. I would suggest it arrive already sliced. Hot honey bee focaccia was PURE PERFECTION. My husband described it as a union of Capicola ham, Gorgonzola and red chili honey that should be illegal! That crunch of the focaccia is not for the inexperienced--you have to fight for the flavor with that bread--and it's worth the duel!! The Italian chopped salad was, well a salad. It was not anything spectacular, but it was plentiful and could have been shared with 2 to 3 people. But let me take a station break for that butter cake... give me a minute to gather my thoughts...are you supposed to CRY at the table with the spoon still sticking out of your mouth in a public restaurant? Can you drop down on one knee and propose to a cake in front of complete strangers? I'm not saying which one I did but I'm wearing sunglasses to cover my red eyes and I'm going wedding dress shopping in the morning! I fell in LOVE with Butter Cake today! Be warned: if you order the Caprese sandwich the bread will be hot and the cheese cold. When I brought this to the staff's attention I was told that is how the company makes it and no changes could be made. Also, I realized afterwards that the hot/cold sandwich came with a choice of salad or chips, which I did not get. $20 for a hot/cold sandwich! I ended up tossing it in the garbage where it belonged. California Pizza Kitchen is one of my Grandma's favorite chain restaurants. We only get one thing when we go...Jambalaya Linguini Fini with extra sauce! And let me tell you they provide a huge portion of Jambalaya loaded with blackened chicken and shrimp, andouille sausage and tasso ham in a spicy cajun sauce. Make sure you get it saucy too! I love coming to this location for CPK, the decor of the restaurant, the servers, and THE FOOD are great reasons to come. Whenever I go to CPK, for my main course, I always order the Spicy Milano pizza. I know I should probably branch out and try other things on the menu but I'll just stick with ordering that banger for now. The Spicy Milano is one of the few pizzas I've tried where I can completely enjoy it solo dolo. I don't feel the need to add crushed red peppers or grated parmesan cheese. An absolutely delicious pizza! On this occasion, I went with my friend and his wife and we tried some appetizers and desserts. The appetizers were the spicy honey bee focaccia and the spicy buffalo cauliflower. The spicey honey bee focaccia was absolutely delicious with the gorgonzola cheese, spices, and ham. I could honestly have asked them to enlarge it and just bring it back as a pizza! The spicy buffalo cauliflower had a good taste. I would only like it to be crispier when fried, but no major complaints with it. I still enjoyed it. For dessert, I ordered the butter cake and added Vanilla Haagen-Dazs (highly recommended).
