It was awful. First off their menu leaves lots of questions like the chicken wings are pictured with fries- do they come with fries? The kids burritos ask if you want rice at an extra charge- does this mean extra rice? I called twice- no answer but how was I supposed to order with these questions? Finally someone picked up but that put us 15 minutes behind in the ordering process and getting to our event. Answers to my questions- no fries and rice is extra (why is rice extra in a burrito?!) The order was not ready on time. Took an extra 10 minutes. The food- bleh! My burrito had no flavor. I felt like I wasted my money. Then I dipped into the taquitos I ordered and again- where was the flavor? I did not utter a word but my husband made a comment and I felt validated that we wasted $70 on our family dinner. My daughters burrito- I paid extra for sour cream and there was no sour cream. The hot sauces- one is too mild and one is too spicy. Why no medium?! I see many reviews talk about the steak tacos not being that good or not having much filling; I did not experience either of these issues. Part of the California Taco Shop chain, this store in Pawtucket is a bit more of a sit down place than the others. We got the Fajita plate and it was good, but nothing spectacular. I believe I paid with credit card and they up-charged me for this convenience vs paying cash. No problem, but next time be really clean and open about it, not obscure about it. I'm oddly obsessed with their chicken taco roll ups. They're so crunchy and good. I ordered them twice this week. You only need 3 for lunch, I keep ordering 5 and regretting it. I also love their nachos with guacamole and pico to dip. The nachos are super thick and crunchy. I like that they offer online and phone ordering. I did think it was weird at 730 I went to place a mobile order but it said I couldn't because they se at 9? I feel like 90 mins is a big window to close mobile ordering. Came here for lunch with a friend. Small place so if there is a large group you may have to wait a bit. Big takeout place I had the taco platter with 2 steak tacos and rice and beans. The tacos were good, not great I thought the steak needed a bit more seasoning. The rice was good, better than most places and the refried beans were OK. If you get the rice and beans separately, they are expensive as other Yelpers have pointed out. But with the taco special it didn't seem to be so bad. I also tried a street taco with just steak and chopped onion and cilantro. I really enjoyed that! Friend had chicken burrito and loved it! She tried the stewed chicken rather than grilled chicken as that is the actual chicken in Mexican food - not grilled. Service was very friendly and we really enjoyed it. Prices were good and we will definitely be back to try other things or try take out. There are many locations so it's easy to find one in the state. Yay! read more

3 1/2 Stars....came here for lunch last week with the work crew. I was excited, hadn't had Mexican in a while - yea it doesn't take much, lol. There were 6 of us so it took a bit, maybe a little longer than we were all expecting to wait. Next time if we come in a group, I'd pre-order to cut the wait time. I ended up getting the 2 soft taco combo - one chicken and one chorizo, came with a side of refried beans and rice. We also got a side of chips/guac/salsa to share. I liked my rice and beans and the chips - yum. They're the nice thick cut chips, not dinky little ones that break with more than a spoonful of salsa on them. Beware - they were addictive! On to the tacos - they were just ok for me. I felt the meat was a bit under seasoned - i put hot sauce and salsa on it and made it a bit better. Def a nice lunch spot and I would return. Everyone in our party seemed to enjoy their meals. Someone got the taco salad bowl - def on my list of items to get the next time around along with more nachossssss!!! read more

Solid choice for lunch or dinner! My first time here - So, I made sure to eat in the restaurant to get the full effect! The staff was super friendly and the options available to choose from were plentiful. Quesadillas, tacos, burritos, Chimichangas, Taquitos (rolled tacos), taco salads, Mexican sodas (including Mexican Coca Cola), nachos, etc. - something for everyone. They started us out with a big serving of tortilla chips and (spicy!) salsa - both of us enjoyed that - even if it made our noses run! I finally decided to get the Chimichanga combo and man!, was that a lot of food for lunch! In hind sight - I probably would have been fine with just the Chimichanga - but the rice and refried beans that made it a combo were really good too - So, I am not complaining! The chimichanga itself was delicious - pulled pork, cheese, tomato, rice and beans, topped with sour cream and guacamole - served crispy on the outside and piping hot - yum!! My lunch mate had 3 soft tacos - one shrimp, one steak, one pulled pork and he was struggling to finish the last one because he was full! (These are not tiny, smushed, Taco Hell, tacos!) I always do takeout here but decided to finally dine in this time. Love the complimentary chips and salsa. Salsa taste way better than other Mexican restaurants I've been to. Food was good and great for the price. Service was good also. The gentlemen that took our order was very upbeat and was awesome with helping us pick out what's on the menu. This is the closest you're going to get to a real deal California Taqueria. The food is really really good and I cant believe this gem is hidden in Pawtucket. The food is authentic and delicious as are the prices! (No Tallaula's $5.00 tacos here) 1.50 street tacos that will knock ur calcetines off. DO NOT BE AFRAID to try new things people...I recommend a Torta de Carnitas. And you can ask for things to order, i.e. "Hold the guac, grill the flour tortillas". I think the reason that we like this place so much is that it is so simple. The food is fresh and delicious and prepared to order. We order ahead and wait outside until it's ready. Mike will just run in and pay and be out in two minutes. They make the food to order so you can customize your tacos or platters in whatever way you like. I just love the freshness of it and the price is ridiculously cheap. This is a hidden gem of Pawtucket - and the city desperately needs these places as it became a thru way rather a destination for most locals. Pawtucket doesn't even have a decent coffee shop for crap sake. I seriously wish I lived within a walking distance of California Taco. The food is great and super affordable. I love their Tostadas and hard tacos with homemade hot sauce. People get a lot of takeout here - the restaurant itself has a cafeteria feel to it. They do not serve alcohol. I usually dine in, especially if I am running errands and need a quick/delicious meal - but yeah, most people get takeout. Be careful because obviously if you keep a crispy, hot taco in a box for too long, it won't be so crispy anymore. Same with nachos and tostadas. Common sense stuff. It isn't the restaurant's fault. It's your fault for being too lazy to get your ass off the couch and into the restaurant. I guess if you do takeout I would recommend soft tacos, burritos, enchiladas - all delicious. Ask for their homemade hot sauce. To the restaurant - please get Cholula Hot Sauce on tables. read more

Original, authentic Mexican food that's fresh and delicious. We had some of their homemade hot sauce and out of this world chicken tacos. They are friendly and really welcoming. I happened to find this place because of a sign on the road. I hate at another Cal Taco in Providence and they both were better than they were bargained for. They have a wide variety of items on their menu and also tacos, about 8 different ones to choose from. This is definitely a place I'll come back too again and again. It's small, out of the way, but nicely done on the inside. They make everything fresh to order, so it does take a bit of time, but well worth it. Still awful. Everyone watched me go to their locked door. No one bothered to say "hey, sorry, we are closed." Who knows what the issue was or had been but clearly they were all embarrassed that they forgot their manners. An employee parked their car sideways; I guess that was supposed to be a passive clue. First visit here on a referral from a coworker. Easy parking across the street at the State Line Liquor Store. Very small seating area. Nothing fancy. Employees here including Nancy are friendly and helpful. Maybe a 45 min wait for food from calling it in till it was ready. Definitely not "Fast Food". I had just started ordering from here. 2nd time I ordered, I realized that my order hadn't been made right after I got home. I called that shop to let them know and the employee told me that it "was a kitchen mistake," and she had to talk to the manager about it and would call me back. Never received a call, so I followed up the next day. I asked if the employee if they had spoken to the manager and if they were going to remake the order? I was told that the manager said that "there was nothing they could do, and that the kitchen staff was told to be more careful." Needless to say, I won't be returning to this shop.
