Only my second time in this place. Came in last week and ordered a bunch of tamales and some champurrado to try out - everything was so delicious!! The tamales were moist and flavorful and the masa to filling ratio is terrific. So I'm back today to order our Christmas tamales but I just couldn't leave without getting myself a chile relleno burrito - which was also great by the way - definitely my new go to place for chili relleno burritos! What a great addition to the neighborhood! It's conveniently located on my way to work so I've gotten pan dulce and breakfast burritos for myself and my coworkers. The conchae are delicious. Soft and fresh. The calabasas empanadas had a good flavor, but too dry. My favorite right now is a tie between the chiccharones tamale and the nopales con huevo burrito. Very tasty and so flavorful. Ok so I'm giving them 3 stars just because common sense is not common anymore specially for bussiness owners.....so I found my new spot for menudo and I like it very much but the simple things that you should have is not high on their list....like a home made SPICY HOT SALSA or a habanero salsa, nope....they give you a home made salsa that has no flavor or your only other choice is Tapatio. I asked if they had dry pepper like the one at pizza joints and they point to the salt and pepper on the table.....I'm like really?? So when I go back I take my own Yucateco sauce and dry pepper with me. I had their cheese and raja tamales and they were decent. Not dried. And they do need to invest on a menu board....they have every item written on paper stuck to the wall.....let's look like an actual bussiness here. read more

I really like this Mexican Bakery and Restaurant! Their breads are tasty; champurado is pretty good, burritos and tamales are better than most nearby restaurants and offer a great variety of flavors. They recently added pupusas but haven't tried them yet. Love their menudo. Also offer good selection of many other typical Mexican favorites like tacos, enchiladas, steak sandwiches on French bread, and lots more I've yet to try. Our Christmas dinner was disastrous thanks to this Bakery. My mom went to purchase tamales two weeks ago and placed an order to be picked up on Christmas Eve. When my mom went to pick up the tamales she was told they were not ready to come back in 3 hours. WTF? So my mom and I went to pick them up at 8:30 p.m. and was told they were still not ready and were not going to be ready till the next day. There was other people in the lobby waiting for their orders so I told my mom let's go they are not going to come through. We resort it to going with chicken for our Christmas dinner and broke tradition from having tamales Because someone bit more than they can chew. We purchase tamales here last year I don't know what happened this year but will not be returning. I'm sure several other umhappy customers will also stay away from this place. read more

This review is for the Tamales only..!! When Canelas 1st opened up last year we tried the tamales. They were delicious, a good share of carne or Chile sauce....but approx. a few months ago....we tried them again ....and sorry to say....a poorly made tamale with 85% masa not once but a few times....and very little carne or sauce.....what the hell happened...!!!! Not to mention that one of our in-laws ordered 6 dozen Xmas tamales order at our insistance and recommendation and the order wasen t ready on time xmas eve..and were not cooked right. And both the above noted issues were brought to thier attention and fell on death ears..!!! I'm not one to bash a local merchant or an establishment, but sharing my discontent, I don't recommend them for tamales....go to Lolitas on Whittier Bl. or something, maybe they will stop to read these posts and stay in business..!!! read more

I can't believe I've only just discovered this little gem. I bought three different pastries/cookies; everything was delicious. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is the lack of washroom facilities. I was feeling quite desperate, and asked the lady serving where I could find a washroom so she directed me to the building across the street. It was soon apparent that the public was not welcome there either; in fact they had put up a sign saying no public washrooms, and had locked the washroom. No doubt because of the Canela customers who keep getting directed over there. So, no coffee shop should be telling customers to use a building across the street, and every coffee shop should have washroom access for paying customers in need. That's my only criticism; otherwise this place is lovely. read more

Not sure if it's just an off day or what but I went to try this place for the first time and I had a baby concha, cochinito, carrot cake and outtie biscuit. So here's the verdict every item lacked a lot of flavor. I wanted to like this place because it's close to me but unfortunately it was disappointing. I decided to stop by after doing some videoing for a Pastor. It's small location. They have I believe 4 tables and chairs, you can pick up some few market items, the pan dulce (sweet bread) to the left as you enter. So I picked up few conchas, some tamales which cost $1.75 each at the time of this posting, and Champurado which cost $2.25 at the time of this posting, for a large which looks like a medium cup. So far I tried Beef and Chicken Tamales and they were bomb, nothing fancy just great tasting, the concha was little dry think you got to get there really early to get the fresh bread. This review is for their pan dulce and champurrado. My husband stopped here on his way home and bought a few pieces of bread and champurrado. We were so disappointed. The bread was over baked and practically burned. The champurrado was made with mostly water and had absolutely no flavor. They really skimped on the milk, sugar & chocolate. We spent $10 and it got thrown in the trash as soon as we got home. We pass by there everyday and we always wanted to stop. We are always looking for a good bakery. I really wanted to like this bakery being that the sign read, "Grand Opening" and "Baked fresh daily". I don't know what they're baking fresh daily, but it wasn't anything I purchased. I purchased 3 pastries and 1 chocolate chip cookie, and they were all stale. I hate leaving a negative review, especially since the girl working there was very welcoming and friendly, but the reason I stopped there was because of the 1 positive review I read on Yelp. Let me start off by saying all the other reviews are BS about this place not being good, about the menu not being able to read it clearly. Obviously you people leaving bad reviews expect a high end bakery and a specific salsa ‍. Come on now, this is by far the best tamale and menudo spot if you're Mexican you know good food. And this spot is the truth. Yeah they probably messed up on holiday orders but what do you expect they are busy that time of year. Tamales are delicious, way better than Lilianas on Caesar Chavez. I came in Christmas Eve for some tamales, it was busy so I decided to leave since I didn't have an order reserved. I was bummed out since the Tamils are good. I'll make sure to reserve for next year. Being Sunday I wanted to start off my day with some menudo, a cup (or two) of coffee and a piece of sweet bread. This family owned location has earned my business. I sincerely recommend. The outside catches your eye with big advertisements of menus, tortillas pan Dulce and tamales. The inside was cleaned, literally spotless. I went to place the order and the young lady who attended me was professional; answered my questions and helped me feel welcomed. I am very picky when it comes to menudo. The tripe meat MUST be cleaned, rinsed and re-rinses. Canela Bakery has met my expectations. Menudo is one of the delicate soups to make and yet Canela Bakery is menudo is one of the most delicious one I've had besides the one made by my family. Clean and with so much flavor. I orders a dozen of tortillas de maíz; were good size, warm and plentiful . I decided to get sweet bread for try and again, no disappointment there. Since childhood I've loved empanadas de crema, and decided to get two for taste and another variety of bread. The empanada is soft but not to the point where it's falling apart. The crema is delightful, enough to fill the inside and the flavor suits my palate. Glad I was able to try a new bakery in my neighborhood. I've heard great things about this place so of course I wanted to check them out. Have been here twice. Customer service is great! Greeted as soon as we walk in and they always have a smile on their faces. So far we have tried their cafe de olla , maple pecan coffee, beef tamales, cheese tamales and some sweet bread. Coffees are so delicious. Maple pecan is new for me and I'll definitely get it again. It's sweet and just different. Cafe de olla is really good too. Beef tamales are very good- great amount of beef not too much masa. Cheese tamales unfortunately were not my favorite. All I see and taste inside is green Chile. No cheese in my 2 tamales. I don't think I'll order cheese again. I don't know the name of all the sweet bread but it's a hit and miss. Some of our bread was really good and some were stale. The orejas and a type of cuerno bread were stale. Not getting again. Conchas are good and I know this bread to be called Elotes- those are our favorite and we're delicious.
