Lamb Sirloin
Taina J.

My family and I have been coming to canoe for years, typically for occasions such as birthdays, so it has quickly become quite the staple location for us. We recently came here for my mother's birthday, and it was still great, but there were a couple things that fell short. Starting with the highlights, our server was an absolute gem! She was super funny and informative; I've honestly never had a bad server here! We ordered a couple of appetizers: Canoe's Cold Smoked Atlantic Salmon and Peppercorn Crusted Kangaroo Loin. The winner between the two was definitely the Smoked Salmon appetizer! There's a deliciously crispy potato cake topped with a generous helping of smoked salmon. There's also some goat cheese with dill cream. We gobbled it up! We still really liked the kangaroo, but we weren't prepared for it to be cold. We were told that it was served cold to prevent it from continuing to cook. It was still good, but I know eating it hot or even warm would've elevated it. We also received the bread service. Back in the days, they used to give us the bread basket, but they now have someone come around and lace it on your plate instead. I asked for 2 pieces of sour dough and one piece of the spicy crispy cracker, and the most person serving the bread made a judgmental face and said under his breath "3?!", which I found rude and distasteful. He proceeded to do the same for my dad who asked for 3, and seemed to speed walk away quickly after my mom made her second selection. The whole thing was just plain odd and left a bad taste in our mouths. Also, they were running behind schedule with our main entrees since they were accommodating big events and private rooms, which we fully understood. We were pleasantly surprised, however, when they gave us complimentary Caesar salad to apologize for the wait! They truly didn't have to do this, but it put a big smile on our faces for being so thoughtful! Lastly, I ordered the Lamb Sirloin. There's also lamb was beautifully tender, and the sauce it was topped with was addicting! The only downside was the pea risotto underneath. It had absolutely no flavor to it apart from the peas. My mom and sister also ordered this dish, and theirs had no flavor either. We ended up adding salt and pepper to it and mixing it with the sauce on top of the lamb. Overall, it's still a pretty solid place, but we were thinking about changing our usual spot to a different restaurant after our experience.

Food was decent, nothing special imo. We went for brunch and got the small basket scones, steak and eggs and duck and beef burger. The scones I'd recommend the rest was just ok. The service was excellent, no complaints The ambiance is really why you come here, is beautiful to sit by the river and just relax and eat, can walk around a bit and get some beautiful pictures too. Was a bit dressier when I went than expected, I wore a polo and shorts but it seemed like most people did dress up more Brunch was also very reasonably priced (~$35pp)

Oysters, Tea Smoked Duck Breast, Crispy Rock Shrimp Salad

I was honestly a little disappointed. I have had this restaurant on my list for a very long time and when I got here the food was very BLAND. First I had the oysters.... They were not my favorite. Nothing special about them at all and the olive oil/horseradish they give with it, does nothing for it. I finally asked for some hot sauce and felt like I could finish them. We order two entrees, the duck and the airline chicken.. meh. The portions were sooo small. The chicken was a little undercooked, as I like my chicken a little crispier and flavorful. Our waitress was so nice and gave us great recommendations but I probably won't be returning here. Great ambiance for a date nice though!

We had an excellent experience at Canoe for brunch. Food was classic and very good & the service was incredible. There's a free valet service, so parking is very easy. We got the assorted pastries and scones, and that was a fun treat. I got the classic "Riverside" breakfast. The eggs were cooked perfectly. My husband got one of the specials, miso trout, and it was fantastic. We sat in the room closest to the river, and the views were incredible. Such a nice, peaceful dining experience. Lastly, the service was great and very professional. Highly recommend!

Came here for lunch last week. I had the Atlantic cod but on the salmon set up (spaghetti squash) to make it healthier and it was amazing. My husband had their special which was a stir fry noodles which he also loved. We got their signature dessert which is the popcorn sundae - I have to say I usually default towards chocolate but the waitress sold us on is so we tried it. It was so worth it! I couldn't stop myself from finishing it! We also had the chocolate cake and it was perfectly decadent. The waitress was fantastic and the ambiance is classy but not stuffy. Loved our experience!

Great service, great food, and great ambiance! I'd been to Canoe a handful of times and had such great experiences that I chose it as my day-after-wedding lunch spot. Valet is complimentary (of course you tip!), and really the only option available for this lot as the rest of the lot makes it clear they don't want restaurant patrons taking up spaces in front of the other shops. So, valet we did! Then, we entered and I gave the hostess my name for my reservation I had made. It's cozy inside with an incredible window view of the river. Our server was very kind and attentive and took special care in making sure my sister's dietary restrictions were respected. Each of us made some kind of a modification to our entrees which isn't something we generally do, but it was very nice to be accommodated. We ordered 3 appetizers for the table: Canoe's House Smoked Salmon, Truffled House-Made French Fries, Shrimp Spring Rolls. Each of them were so tasty! My favorite was the fries, my husband's (ahh!) favorite was the spring rolls, and my husband's mom's favorite was the salmon. My mom couldn't choose a favorite to break the tie (and why should she? Everything was great!), and sadly my sister couldn't partake this time but hopefully next time. For my entrée, I chose the shrimp salad, but since I didn't want it fried today, I chose to get it sautéed. It was good, but next time I'd just get it fried for more flavor and textural interest! After our meal, we stepped outside to enjoy the atmosphere. It's so peaceful! Looking forward to coming back again to enjoy more!

Once again, such a great restaurant! From the ambiance to the service, I have always had a great experience. We ordered the charcuterie board and kangaroo as an appetizer, surprisingly all the kids tried the kangaroo and loved it! My beet salad was a larger portion than I was expecting, but it was pairs well with the goat cheese. I chose the salmon for my entree and everything about it was delicious. There's a level of freshness that comes through clear when eating the dishes at Canoe. Will definitely be back whenever I'm in Atlanta.

Cute restaurant next to the river. Good view and ambience. Great service. Loved the kangaroo app we got. Was tender and delicious, not gamey at all. Oysters were good as well. Steak was ok.

Canoe is a fantastic place for a date night. It has an old-school fine dining feel right when you walk in. Hospitality is top notch and service is impeccable. There is something about when servers work as a team, and it was clear that's how they operate. Drinks were pretty great the kangaroo was my favorite thing we ate. The sauce is delicious and its tender - I didnt think it was gamey at all. I also thought the rabbit was delicious. The risotto dish was not my favorite. It was still hard and not very creamy. That's the only reason I took a star. I would definitely come back for a special occasion

A good friend of mine and I frequent canoe for our bimonthly lunch meet ups. She is a regular here so they always have a table reserved for her whenever she calls. The service is always immaculate. The entire staff greets you as you're being escorted to your table and are all so pleasant. The next time I'm there I'm going to purpose to take a picture of the Chattahoochee river that's right outside the restaurant - it's so picturesque and really sets the scene/ambiance. Very romantic views and just an overall great experience.

Eating at Canoe is a routine part of my husband and I coming back home. We love this restaurant, the ambiance, and the welcome. We came in for dinner Saturday night on our way home to Ellijay and loved getting to see Amanda the manager. She is always attentive and such a joy. Service was a bit less memorable than it normally is but my husband and I still enjoyed ourselves. We shared the Baby Arugula & Parmesan Salad, Marinated Golden & Red Beet Salad, Peppercorn Crusted Kangaroo Loin, Georgia White Shrimp, Octopus & Patagonian Scallop Tart, and the Slow Braised Blue Ridge Rabbit. The salads were tasty, a smidge too dressed but still delicious. The peppercorn Crusted kangaroo was cooked perfectly. The tart was pretty darn fishy tasting which made it unpalatable to us. The rabbit stole the show and was cooked perfectly in beautiful pillowy ravioli. Yum!!! We will definitely be back and can't wait to see what new creations the chef comes up with!! Parking is valet right outside the restaurant.

Sitting outside on their covered patio overlooking the river is the prime reason to dine here. Inside dining is a step back in time, dark and lots of wood. Service was above average, attentive and friendly. We dined during Sunday brunch on a beautiful day. Valet parking is the only option. Cocktails were good, prices fair. Started with the breakfast pastry basket. Nice assortment of muffins, scones, cinnamon rolls. Maybe because I bake, the items were not as tasty as anticipated. Pass on those ... House smoked salmon appetizer was the winner for me . Tasty, fresh, good portion. My friend ordered it and I ordered the arugula salad so we shared both. Hubby's Cesar salad was drowned in too much dressing. No anchovy flavor. Crispy shrimp for my entree was good, again too much dressing on the slaw. It seems that a garde manger chef revamp is needed. Roasted chicken was dry, it was the breast so not very tasty. So, go for cocktails and appetizers while enjoying an outdoor view. Driving around the surrounding was beautiful!

I got the kangaroo appetizer and rabbit entree. Both were different from the traditional southern food scene and very decadent. The chocolate-cherry tea sauce that came with the kangaroo was superb. I got bread to dip after finishing the kangaroo. The rabbit was delicious and not gamey at all. The bartender outside was very knowledgeable and provided excellent recommendations. The patio and riverside bar area was pretty epic . Great vied and perfect for happy hour or special occasions.

Ask the Community - Canoe

Can I wear heels if I want to walk around the garden? Is there a path that I don't have to walk on grass/dirt? Thanks for any info!

I'm not sure if you can wear heels because while there are paths, they aren't paved. Instead, they're filled with rocks, like gravel.

How do I make reservations?

I use Open Table to make my reservations. If you click on reserve a table on their web site it will take you to Open Table.

Do they have a kids menu?

They have several options for children, you just have to ask! We take our daughter 2-3 times a month and she loves it just as much as we do =)

Can you wear jeans?

Yes you can. I know that they allow long, and non-torn jeans for sure.

Is any of the meat served halal?

Is it worth going during winter months when outdoor seating is too cold? There a table we still can view the river from inside?

Yes, they have heaters. I still wore a winter coat and a hat.

How far in advance do I need to make a Sunday dinner reservation?

Weeks. I just tried to make a reservation ANY day for dinner anytime from 5pm on and nothing available for over 2 weeks and then only on a weekday.

Is this place solo dining friendly?

They have bar and high top seating available. But they'll also seat you "table for one" in the general dining area.

Do they have a happy hour?

If you mean specially priced items - no, they do not. But they do have a nice bar and it's first come, first served.

Do they still serve the duck and beef burger for lunch or just dinner?

Yes. Their menu changes seasonally but it's one of the permanent features. Enjoy!

Is it worth to go here after sunset?

Absolutely! The garden is lit. It's so nice!!

Is there anything vegan friendly on the menu?

My daughter is vegan and used to work there. They will make as much as they can from the menu vegan or they will make you a dish from the kitchen. They are great. You will not be disappointed. You will not get just another salad

How long is the Saturday night wait typically? Are reservations recommended?

I would definitely make a reservation. I think the only way you can get away without one is if you go when they open.

Do they only serve brunch on Sunday?

The serve Brunch and a la carte. Georgia recently changed the Sunday alcohol law so you can drink also!!

Can you provide details on the happy hour? Times? Days? Details on specials? Thank you!

They stay around the River . Hours normally between 5-8.

We both enjoyed our drinks. I ordered the Fried Calamari to start. They were perfectly fried and the marinara had great flavor and was an excellent compliment to the calamari. At our server's recommendation I ordered the Georgia Fried Chicken and I was supe happy with it. The chicken was excellently cooked and the hot honey (really more honey than hot) was a great addition. The Brussels sprouts were outstanding! The Asian inspired flavor made the dish. The Mac and cheese was good, but I like a lot more solid cheese rather than cheese sauce, which this one had. My wife was very satisfied with the Bistro Steak Sandwich. She loved the bread the sandwich came in. The one bite of steak I had was good, but I could have used a touch more salt. She thought it was seasoned perfectly. We had a window seat and had a nice and peaceful view of the adjacent wooded area.

I requested a table by the window--glad I did, as they don't have many booths here, and the noise level in the restaurant was quite high, so being over against a window helped. Service was good--professional, friendly, and not rushed. Bourbon meatball appetizer was amazing. My husband loved his grouper sandwich; I got the trout and it was fine but nothing special. Deducting one star for the cocktails--my Manhattan was pretty weak. Nice selection of wines, however.

I arrived around 4 PM with my daughter, a friend, and her four children. Before coming, I called the location around 12:30 PM to confirm their "all-you-can-play" deal ($29.99 including a $10 game card, meal, and unlimited games). I was told it was available. However, when we arrived, the front desk staff told me the deal was no longer being offered. After explaining that I had just confirmed it hours earlier, I was still dismissed. I had to call the location again, standing there, just to have someone else confirm that the deal was in fact available. Completely unacceptable and a clear lack of communication and training. That was just the beginning. We were told we'd be placed on a waitlist for bowling--even though there were multiple empty lanes in plain sight. After waiting an entire hour, I went back to the desk to ask what was going on, and suddenly a lane was "available." Interesting. When we got to the lane, there were piles of boxes stacked nearby, making it feel like we were bowling in the middle of a storage room or construction zone. Then we were told we couldn't even order food from the lane--despite menus and condiments sitting right there. Make it make sense. Before bowling, the kids played laser tag, and one of the children ended up with a bloody nose. Not a single staff member stepped in to help. Instead, a 12-year-old child was told to go to the bathroom and handle it himself. That alone was enough to question the safety and supervision at this place. We then attempted to eat at the restaurant area. We seated ourselves, were handed menus, and then completely ignored. After waiting, we had to walk up to the bar and place our own order. While standing there, I noticed a noticeable infestation of flies--at that point, I decided not to eat anything at all. Meanwhile, a new manager had come on shift and sat in a corner the entire time, while the staff--mostly teenagers--stood around on their phones, offering little to no service. The entire facility was filthy. Tables covered in leftover food, trash all over the floors, and the bathrooms were absolutely disgusting. I don't know who is running this location, but it is being run into the ground. At this point, it needs a complete shutdown, deep cleaning, renovation, and an entirely new staff. This was, without question, one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had. Do not go here. Seriously--go anywhere else.

The food was excellent, the drinks were on point, and our waitress did an awesome job handling such a large party. She stayed on top of everything and made sure we were taken care of all night. After dinner, we decided to check out the speakeasy through the freezer door--Eleanor's--and unfortunately, that's where the experience took a turn. The atmosphere itself was nice--semi-dark with a cool concept--but it could definitely lean more into a darker, more immersive speakeasy vibe. The bigger issue, though, was the service. It was night and day compared to upstairs. The waitress came across as rude and unwelcoming from the start. A few of us sat down in a small corner area with an L-shaped bench and some extra chairs we had to pull over ourselves. Obviously, with 12 people, there was no way we were all fitting there, yet she insisted she wouldn't take any drink orders until everyone was seated. That made no sense, especially since there was standing room and even a bar-height table available. To make matters worse, there was zero acknowledgment of the birthday--not even a simple "happy birthday," which felt like a missed opportunity given the occasion. When we asked about Fireball shots, the response was a blunt "um, no," followed by "you can have water," as she started filling glasses. That pretty much summed up the vibe we got. Not sure if this is typical service down there or just an off night, but it was enough to make us decide we wouldn't come back to the speakeasy. Bottom line: If you're in the area, definitely check out Muss & Turner's for dinner--it's worth it. But I'd skip Eleanor's and save your time and money.
