On a beautiful early summer day with warm sunshine and gentle breezes, it was a pleasure to sit at one of the outside patio tables, overlooking the colorful flower garden and the lazy river -with food and service that lived up to this restaurant's positive reputation and its 5 star reviews. Food: 5/5 We decided to try a leisurely lunch. The menu is not large, but it has enough variety to be interesting. Everything we tried was delicious. The smoked salmon appetizer portion was large, but the best part was the great flavor. I can see why this choice has been on the menu for years. The Vidalia onion soup will be a surprise for the non-Georgians who expect it to be similar to a savory beef broth like French onion soup. Georgia's onions from the Vidalia area are sweet and tasty enough to carry the soup without the help of a meat broth and the green pesto sauce offers a nice additional touch. The salmon on fresh salad was done perfectly. The panka-crusted cod with mashed potatoes and spinach was outstanding. Both were seasoned so lightly that the true flavors shone through. The portions were generous enough that dessert at the time would have been too much, but others can do as we did and take home one of the dessert choices. Next time we plan to try their sandwiches which looked yummy at other tables. Service : 5/5 Service was excellent from the pleasant greeting, through the entire meal. Our server, Clayton, couldn't have been more helpful with the menu, as well as being very efficient and amiable. He made sure our food was served promptly and our beverages glasses were full, and our requests were met quickly. Facility: The facility lends itself to the riverside experience from the canoe in the entryway ceiling to the flowers and bird feeders just beyond the patio tables. The white tablecloth ambiance informs you that this isn't a fast-food experience. There are tents set aside in a more private are of the garden as a lovely venue for special events Location : This isn't a quick roadside stop next to a 6-lane highway. Even though the restaurant is convenient to dine in an Atlanta suburb, the roads to the restaurant wind and meander for a short distance through one of the prettiest neighborhoods, with a canopy of large old trees, with lovely fences, hedges, and gates lining the road. There is courteous valet parking at the front door. The restaurant is not inexpensive but it is well worth the prices paid, in our opinion. read more

After trying twice to order takeout I have been unsuccessful. Depending on the night they arbitrarily decide whether they will take takeout orders. I'd understand if they stated it online or somewhere but they decide each evening whether or not they will take any takeout orders and then only way to find out is by calling. This is incredibly frustrating because you can't plan or count on being able to get food from there and with a menu as expensive as theirs that's just unacceptable, in my opinion. My impression is that they are stuck in the 1980s around when they opened and don't want to update the experience. Hence their post strict dress code and arbitrary takeout policy. read more

Visited this place again after two years to celebrate my wife's birthday. As always, we received a warm welcome, and our waiter was incredibly friendly and attentive. He took the time to walk us through the entire menu and explain the different options. For starters, we tried the smoked salmon and watermelon salad. The watermelon salad was absolutely delicious and definitely one of the highlights of the meal. For our entrées, we ordered the pork chop, lamb, and rabbit ravioli. Compared with our previous visit, however, I felt the overall quality of the entrées had gone down a little. The lamb, in particular, was not as good as we expected. That said, the portion sizes were generous, and we still enjoyed our meal and the overall experience. The hostess was welcoming, and we enjoyed waiting by the lake before being seated. The onion soup wasn't what we expected based on the menu description, and my salmon arrived much rarer than anticipated. My family and I have been coming to canoe for years, typically for occasions such as birthdays, so it has quickly become quite the staple location for us. We recently came here for my mother's birthday, and it was still great, but there were a couple things that fell short. Starting with the highlights, our server was an absolute gem! She was super funny and informative; I've honestly never had a bad server here! We ordered a couple of appetizers: Canoe's Cold Smoked Atlantic Salmon and Peppercorn Crusted Kangaroo Loin. The winner between the two was definitely the Smoked Salmon appetizer! There's a deliciously crispy potato cake topped with a generous helping of smoked salmon. There's also some goat cheese with dill cream. We gobbled it up! We still really liked the kangaroo, but we weren't prepared for it to be cold. We were told that it was served cold to prevent it from continuing to cook. It was still good, but I know eating it hot or even warm would've elevated it. We also received the bread service. Back in the days, they used to give us the bread basket, but they now have someone come around and lace it on your plate instead. I asked for 2 pieces of sour dough and one piece of the spicy crispy cracker, and the most person serving the bread made a judgmental face and said under his breath "3?!", which I found rude and distasteful. He proceeded to do the same for my dad who asked for 3, and seemed to speed walk away quickly after my mom made her second selection. The whole thing was just plain odd and left a bad taste in our mouths. Also, they were running behind schedule with our main entrees since they were accommodating big events and private rooms, which we fully understood. We were pleasantly surprised, however, when they gave us complimentary Caesar salad to apologize for the wait! They truly didn't have to do this, but it put a big smile on our faces for being so thoughtful! Lastly, I ordered the Lamb Sirloin. There's also lamb was beautifully tender, and the sauce it was topped with was addicting! The only downside was the pea risotto underneath. It had absolutely no flavor to it apart from the peas. My mom and sister also ordered this dish, and theirs had no flavor either. We ended up adding salt and pepper to it and mixing it with the sauce on top of the lamb. I know I have written reviews in years past, but somehow it is gone. We love the experience and food here as always. We loved how they gave us a printed "Happy Anniversary" with the date on the menu for us, as we are celebrating our 30th. We started out with the Georgia Peach and Heirloom Tomato Salad...it was good. We couldn't decide on the Smoked Atlantic Salmon or White Shrimp/Scallops. So they halved it for us so we could have both. My wife had the special Flounder that night, and I had the Australian Lamb Top Sirloin. All dishes were oh so delicious. We finished off with a nice dessert. Thank you for a nice anniversary dinner, which we haven't been disappointed any of our 4 times going there. Great service, great food, and great ambiance! I'd been to Canoe a handful of times and had such great experiences that I chose it as my day-after-wedding lunch spot. Valet is complimentary (of course you tip!), and really the only option available for this lot as the rest of the lot makes it clear they don't want restaurant patrons taking up spaces in front of the other shops. So, valet we did! Then, we entered and I gave the hostess my name for my reservation I had made. It's cozy inside with an incredible window view of the river. Our server was very kind and attentive and took special care in making sure my sister's dietary restrictions were respected. Each of us made some kind of a modification to our entrees which isn't something we generally do, but it was very nice to be accommodated. We ordered 3 appetizers for the table: Canoe's House Smoked Salmon, Truffled House-Made French Fries, Shrimp Spring Rolls. Each of them were so tasty! My favorite was the fries, my husband's (ahh!) favorite was the spring rolls, and my husband's mom's favorite was the salmon. My mom couldn't choose a favorite to break the tie (and why should she? Everything was great!), and sadly my sister couldn't partake this time but hopefully next time. For my entrée, I chose the shrimp salad, but since I didn't want it fried today, I chose to get it sautéed. It was good, but next time I'd just get it fried for more flavor and textural interest! We had an excellent experience at Canoe for brunch. Food was classic and very good & the service was incredible. There's a free valet service, so parking is very easy. We got the assorted pastries and scones, and that was a fun treat. I got the classic "Riverside" breakfast. The eggs were cooked perfectly. My husband got one of the specials, miso trout, and it was fantastic. We sat in the room closest to the river, and the views were incredible. Such a nice, peaceful dining experience. My husband had their special which was a stir fry noodles which he also loved. We got their signature dessert which is the popcorn sundae - I have to say I usually default towards chocolate but the waitress sold us on is so we tried it. It was so worth it! We ordered the charcuterie board and kangaroo as an appetizer, surprisingly all the kids tried the kangaroo and loved it! I live on paces ferry road, about 2 mins away from canoe. I had dinner here a few months ago and it was ok. Tonight I had a terrible experience. First off we ordered the school yard tequila drink. They were insanely sweet and not very good. For the apps we had the kangaroo and the shrimp. Both were good. I got the pork chop and my friend got the rabbit. The pork chop was total trash, so fatty and just an Inferior piece of meat. I eat pork chops often and this was a garbage piece of meat. They remade it and it was still so fatty. After the 2 failures I got the cod which was also terrible. I couldn't tell if they just did a bad job becouse I sent the other items back. The rabbit was good and the ravioli were solid. Desert was a popcorn Sunday and we really enjoyed it. the weather was a total downpour. So I brought a fox umbrella that I had picked up in the uk. I checked my umbrella and they ended up giving it away to someone else. So I got an absolute trash meal and lost a $250 umbrella. This place is not a good restaurant. I eat all over the world, this place is so far from good it's not funny. STAY AWAY !!! read more

Eating at Canoe is a routine part of my husband and I coming back home. We love this restaurant, the ambiance, and the welcome. We came in for dinner Saturday night on our way home to Ellijay and loved getting to see Amanda the manager. She is always attentive and such a joy. Service was a bit less memorable than it normally is but my husband and I still enjoyed ourselves. We shared the Baby Arugula & Parmesan Salad, Marinated Golden & Red Beet Salad, Peppercorn Crusted Kangaroo Loin, Georgia White Shrimp, Octopus & Patagonian Scallop Tart, and the Slow Braised Blue Ridge Rabbit. The salads were tasty, a smidge too dressed but still delicious. The peppercorn Crusted kangaroo was cooked perfectly. The tart was pretty darn fishy tasting which made it unpalatable to us. The rabbit stole the show and was cooked perfectly in beautiful pillowy ravioli. Yum!!! We will definitely be back and can't wait to see what new creations the chef comes up with!! A good friend of mine and I frequent canoe for our bimonthly lunch meet ups. She is a regular here so they always have a table reserved for her whenever she calls. The service is always immaculate. The entire staff greets you as you're being escorted to your table and are all so pleasant. The next time I'm there I'm going to purpose to take a picture of the Chattahoochee river that's right outside the restaurant - it's so picturesque and really sets the scene/ambiance. I was honestly a little disappointed. I have had this restaurant on my list for a very long time and when I got here the food was very BLAND. First I had the oysters.... They were not my favorite. Nothing special about them at all and the olive oil/horseradish they give with it, does nothing for it. I finally asked for some hot sauce and felt like I could finish them. We order two entrees, the duck and the airline chicken.. meh. The portions were sooo small. The chicken was a little undercooked, as I like my chicken a little crispier and flavorful. Nice ambiance. Unfortunately we had chosen a day when the weather was rainy so we couldn't really enjoy the outside. Also we were seated in the middle main area, with no view of the river. Our waiter was very nice and attentive, went over the specials also recommended apps and dishes. Drinks were solid, not cheap but well made. We ordered the kangaroo, cold smoked salmon and snow pea salad for apps. Our favorite was definitely the salmon, delicious fish pairing well with the creamy goat cheese and with the amazing crunch of potato underneath. Kangaroo wasn't too gamey at all. Snow pea salad was refreshing. The apps coupled with the bread basket (also delicious) actually left us somewhat full. For entrees the cod was probably the table favorite, and our son enjoyed the burger but probably would have like a simpler normal burger more. My duck was unfortunately far over-seasoned making it difficult to eat some too salty portions. The waiter was appropriately attentive throughout the meal. We didn't have any room for dessert. Overall good restaurant, expensive and in my experience have had better food locally elsewhere. Also, I think there's a large difference in experience between the middle dining room and the tables with the views, so make sure to requests ahead of time if possible. read more

He helped make the evening feel special from start to finish. The atmosphere was outstanding, with a beautiful riverside setting that makes Canoe a wonderful place to spend an evening. The appetizers were phenomenal, especially the smoked salmon and the onion soup, both of which were highlights of the meal. The rabbit entrée was also excellent and full of flavor. Unfortunately, the lamb was a major disappointment. While it was cooked properly, it had very little flavor and lacked the distinctive taste that makes lamb unique. If I had closed my eyes, I would not have known I was eating lamb. Overall, we had a very enjoyable dining experience thanks to the exceptional service, beautiful setting, and outstanding appetizers. It was quiet outside and much noisier inside with all hard surfaces and a busy dining area. The Canoe Manhattan was definitely spirit forward (packs a punch) and the Tom Riddle a nice change of pace both of which I'd get again. The "Canoe's Cold Smoked Salmon, Crispy Potato Cake, Creamy Goat's Cheese, Caper-Dill Cream" was listed as an appetizer, but we made an entree out of it. Apparently, a signature dish that was really good with textures and flavors that hit the mark. I had the Cod; it was . . . . Cod, nothing to write home about but it was fine. Whatever you do don't miss the Popcorn Ice Cream Sundae . . . to DIE for! Would definitely return but may be more inclined to sit out at the outside bar along the river with the beet salad, smoked salmon, and that to die for popcorn ice cream sundae! We then have the lamb and fish special. The lamb is cooked perfectly. Not too hard to chew. However the fish is too salty too much seasoning. Could not really taste the freshness of the fish. Feel like the chef try to cover the fish taste maybe it is not fresh? We order the ice cream for desert which is too soft and eat like milk shake. Have to say the waiter are very very good. Chris, was our waiter and because it was my first time, he gave us a little moment of history and reviewed their menu items. The brunch menu was quite smaller than what i expected and there wasn't much room choose from (starter; appetizers; entree, dessert). We ordered the smoked salmon appetizer which was good, but heavy on the cream cheese. Was told about the rainbow trout which was not on the menu but it was ordered. It was good, but wish the grits were more on a creamier side. I also ordered an espresso martini with baileys. They have a patio area that I would like to try and I like how the waiter was attentive. It was a little packed when we arrived so it was a little noisy but it all simmered down as time went on. I will definitely be back; for dinner though. read more

The cesar was good and dressed appropriately. I went a little on the wild side with the kangaroo. The kangaroo was cooked perfectly. The biggest feedback was the competing flavors. It was prepared with a pepper crust and sweet sauce. I found that the pepper was a little too much and the sauce was too sweet which confused the taste a little rather than complimenting it. We visited back in September, so the weather was perfect to sit on the patio and look out onto the Chattahoochee River. We loved the cold smoked salmon served on a potato cake for our appetizer. Our server was Manny, and he was the ultimate professional yet super friendly. We appreciated his recommendations, and he was attentive yet we never felt rushed. Everything we ordered--the cocktails, smoked salmon appetizer, salads and entrees (salmon and lamb) were divine.
