I've been here multiple times, every single time the food is breathtaking, but this time specifically was a very good experience. The hamachi was my favorite this time, and the friend chicken was delicious. My suggestions: -eat on the patio -share an entree with someone, and then order oysters and small plates. -ask if they have anything else that is not on the menu -order a dessert, maybe with a coffee or dessert wine This is even a good place for just oysters and drinks if that's what you are craving. Had my second meal at Canon (the first was when they first opened) and I will say I was not disappointed. My BF graduated from Davis MBA program and I had not seen her In two years so we were Celebrating! While we had a reservation we ended up opting for the bar. It was hot that day (100ish) our table was outside and I was not thrilled for that. The bar was actually much more fun, likely extended our good time much longer too and we spaced it out and talked with Kerry our bartender about it all! We drank wine - lots of great options by the glass. They do have a very cool cocktail program with house made tinctures and the like. We shared everything: Halibut Crudo - totally different with plums and balsamic - light and rich at the same time. Pea salad with guanciale. Mmmmm I love peas and pork! What a place! I loved the ambiance of the restaurant and the staff was wonderful. My favorite dish was probably the hamachi or the loaf with the cheddar fat butter. It seems simple but the butter was just rich and fatty, which (unfortunately) made it taste so good because I ate so much of it. Canon is one of our absolute favorite restaurants in Sac. It truly is farm to fork so seasonal ingredients are reflected in the dishes and the menu. Everything is meant to be shared both small plates and entrees. The entrees are more consistent on the menu regardless of the season. The marinated NY strip is always a favorite. We have been wanting to try Canon for a while and finally got our chance on a Wednesday evening. We arrived later in the evening and had to eat on the patio, which turned out great. It was really pleasant out there and not too hot. Nice vibe too. We tried a bunch of different dishes to share. Some were better than others. The tots looked amazing but were just ok. The nectarine salad with whipped feta was incredible as were the fingerling potatoes. The biggest disappointment for us was the NY strip steak. Now I haven't eaten a steak in at least a decade, as I only recently started eating beef again. It sounded great but was so tough my husband's hand hurt from trying to cut it. I noticed a couple of other reviewers also complained about it so something is definitely off with it. A big bummer for my return to steak. Our server was gracious and took it off the bill immediately. Upgrade to four stars for that. We finished with some great coffee and delicious ice cream and sorbet. We were greeted warmly and led out to our reserved table on the classy patio. Our server was a really quirky, unique dude, but we enjoyed his service and he knew his stuff. His menu knowledge, timing, suggestions... all outstanding! Ok I'll do my best, but the pics matter... - The pickles. OMG. Cauliflower, pickles, green beans, served on ice. Today was Mother's day and I decided to take my wife to this Canon after hearing such great things about it. We showed up at 4:PM it was there buffet event, which I thought would be dinner menu(my fault), that being said clearly the food had been sitting out for quite some time, it was cool at best. I will say the parfait was great which was the same actual temperature as the potatoes, rice, eggs and seared tuna. On top of the cool food we felt rushed, due to the staff moving tables, chairs and setting up for the next day. We were placed in the center of the restaurant and they removed all the tables around us! Not to mention the waitress and staff were clearly ready to go home. All of this lovely experience only cost $250.00. I will never go back this restaurant, which is sad because I had such high hopes! read more

We went there for Mothers Day Brunch, three of us. The first impression was so-so. The decor was nice as were the table settings. No one seemed properly friendly and no actual greetings at all from anyone front checking to the servers. Seemed a bit on the snotty side. The food was not as impressive as I would have hoped. Selection had more oddities than expectations. The parfaits were great, the rice was dry and some fruits were rather tasteless. The servers were not around when you needed them and the coffee was always cold! Then my final straw was getting a check for the $80 each, which was way overpriced, and having a "large party" gratuity of 25% added on!! This was an entirely SELF SERVE buffet, why would you add on a high tip just for beverage service?? The server never smiled, never interacted and just acted like she didn't really want to be there, and I get nailed for 25% for that! Seems more like they may be underpaying the servers and expecting high tips added on, even when not deserved, to make up the difference! Their website reads more like "what we want" than what they do for the customers, like ridiculous reservation demands and pre-payments, high corkage and cancellation punishments! Canon is everything I love about Sacramento. What I mean is that the coolest stuff seems to hide in plain sight all over the city, and this restaurant is no different. We were literally staying a few doors down, and driving up to the house I had no idea I'd passed a Michelin rated restaurant. It's tucked in between some industrial type businesses and some really cute houses, and super easy to miss. Once you do find the door and open it, you're totally transported to a beautifully modern and serene space with a lively vibe. The interior is warm and inviting. Our reservation was for the patio, which is intimate and inviting, with large spacious booths, small tables perfect for a date, and even some more social spaces with cocktail tables and fire pits. The menu is super interesting with a lot of fun for any foodie. There's a lot of attention to detail in the food, expert technique, and stunning presentation, that all adds up to an exceptional dining experience. Dining with toddlers meant we didn't get to experience a lot of it, but what we did sample was quite delicious and absolutely stunning to look at. We ordered the seasonal beets, which was a fun play on a tar tar with great texture and flavor. We also had the tater tots with black mole sauce, which the kids devoured, and I enjoyed half dozen super plump oysters with Housemade vinegars that were complex in flavor and really accentuated the beauty of the oysters themselves. As a surprise, for my husband's birthday, I made a reservation at Canon for a Thursday night at 7 PM. We were warmly greeted and seated right away, with a nice view of the open-air kitchen so we could watch all the happenings. We decided to sample a little bit of everything, as that is how their menu is really designed and started with the pickled veggies, biscuits, and oysters. My favorite from the first bunch was the biscuit with the homemade butter and fermented honey (so. good.). Next up, we tried the tater tots and chicken drumsticks, a pairing our waitress suggested, and that was divine. Some of the crispiest tater tots I have ever had in my life with the perfect balance of the mole. After that, we tried the burrata and peach salad as well as the green beans (with Cheez Its!). The burrata and peach salad was incredible - again, with the balance of flavors and textures. Finally, for dessert, we enjoyed a delicious slice of s'more cake and peanut truffles. The rich and decadent chocolate was balanced with the marshmallow meringue and graham cracker cake. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. A few friends and I decided to go to Canon . Probably one of the more pricey places that we have all gone to in Sac. The street it's on is unassuming, but once you go in, it feels like a different world. Large open spaces indoor and outdoor. Outdoor is covered and has heat lamps. If it wasn't for the door allowing cold air to come in. It would be perfect. The server we had was great, he made great suggestions and explained to us what things were good to share and not. The platters are pretty big. Each Entree could probably be shared between 2 people. We got the tater tots.. $7 for some tater tots? Why not? We're going big or going home.. but to be honest the tater tots were excellent. Much more creamy inside than what we're used and yet still maintained it's crunchy exterior. I guess it's magic. We got the Chicken Drumsticks, which honestly is delicious, with bbq flavor without the bbq sauce. The drumsticks also have a unique dip that is spicy and tangy.This is definitely worth a try. For side dishes, we tried: Ahi Tuna Tartare with chicarron. It was an interesting ahi tuna dip with chicharrons. Seared Bok Choy. This was not a repeat item I'd recommend as the dish was pricey for two pieces of large bok choy and lobster XO sauce. All of their drinks are pretty tasty. You can't go wrong here. read more

First off the parking is atrocious! They have a lot for about 10 cars. Good luck getting one of those, but most likely you'll be circling the blocks for a while until you find someone leaving. The indoor seating area is really loud, thankfully we were seating in the patio, which is cute, but unfortunately our server kept forgetting about us. The menu is all over the place and most dishes don't go with another, but we decided to be open and ordered 6 different ones. They are plated beautifully but thats it. First the chicharrones, they were underwhelming, quality wasn't much different than your local liquor store brand with some cut up tomatoes on top. Second was the hamachi, a bland piece of fish with a cream sauce and infused oil. It was lacking salt, acid and flavor. We didn't even finish it. Next was the roasted corn salad, which was cooked previously and then refrigerated for way too long. The corn was cold on the mound of cream that drowned out the corn, topped with some greens but lacking salt and acid as well. The only dish I liked was the drumsticks. The only part I disliked was the cumin in the sauce, but that's just a personal preference. Then 40 minutes later our potato salad and steak came. Potato salad was just roasted potatoes on some blue cheese sauce with greens. Fine but the blue cheese was odd. The steak was appalling! Over cooked on the outside, rare in the middle. Probably frozen before hand. It came with some flavorless beets and was extremely overpriced. If I was the Michelin guide I would take their recommendation away! read more

What a refreshing place with a menu that is constantly being updated for better or for worse. I say that because as many of you know, when you fall in love with a dish, it is tempting to want to order it time and time again with every revisit. With a place like Canon, it's nearly impossible. But I suppose that is one of the beauty of this restaurant and something that should be appreciated. Canon's everchanging menu takes one out of their comfort zone and introduce them to new possibilities using fresh ingredients that are in season to ensure the highest quality. They also have an open kitchen which does heighten the volume of the place. It is definitely more on the noisier side and a highly energetic atmosphere. With that said, it is a really fun set up because not a lot of restaurant offers this layout. First thing you should know is that this is a family style type of place where every dish is meant to be shared. I've always preferred this style making Canon an ideal place for me to have lunch with a close friend or significant other. There's no need for me to go into too much details about all the specific dishes I've tried since they may or may not be there when it is your turn to visit. However, after different dine in experiences throughout the last couple of years, I have observed some items that have stayed on the menu despite all the other changes. There are quite a few food on the menu that are very basic, but made to look and feel bougie. It is what it is though. Prepare to overpay for some dish particularly when it comes to the small bites. Those can be very underwhelming. I don't know what I was thinking when I ordered biscuit and butter and a variety of pickles (like, whaaat??? AND IT'S ONE THAT STAYS ON THE MENU). The other thing that stays on the menu (although in different variations) is their whole chicken platter. The roasted ones have been the best and my absolute favorite although it takes like 45 minutes to come out (staff does courtesy warning as well). People don't typically come to nice restaurants to eat chicken, but Canon makes it just right. It's worth trying. From their small plates, the chicken drumsticks is also a popular choice. As for desserts, it's my least favorite category at Canon. Ironically enough, one of the best dessert I have ever had anywhere is from Canon, and it was their Butterscotch Miso Pudding. Sounds so revolting, but somehow it works. It works almost too well that I find myself yearning for something long gone and hasn't made a return. What a wonderful high end and chill place in East Sacramento that I would definitely recommend for anyone who is looking for a date night/ celebrate special occasion without burning a big hole in your pocket. They also have heaters which is great. Our server was very welcoming and knowledgeable about the menu. We tried their tater tots, and the chai cocktail which both came out quick and extra points to split our cocktail into separate drink ware as we were sharing. This is just so thoughtful. For the entree we tried their chicken and beets salad ( which for too overpowering for my taste) but they they were accommodating to change the dish and my new entree came out quickly and totally killed it. The best part, the server was very kind to be able to find sometime for me ( a vegetarian) that suits my taste buds and that is exactly the service you would expect from a place like this. Had an early dinner on Monday night. We ordered two appetizers, 2 entrees, and three sides. Couple of drinks later, the bill was over $300 for 3 of us. I don't mind the price, if the food quality was a little better. The ambiance was great. It had a good crowd, but our order was the first in. Appetizers were good but not "over the top". Small portions, just enough to taste. Tot's (about 15 stacked) and biscuits (2). The side dishes came out 10 minutes later. The main course came out 20 minutes later, so we returned two and they kept them "under the broiler" to keep warm it seem liked. Why would you send out your sides without the main course? Even the waitress could not answer. The main course arrived. Order the Chicken and the Short Ribs. The Chicken was done well. Juicy and allot of flavor. The Short Ribs were disappointing. Dry and over cooked. This cut of meat has can be really juicy, but if you over cook it, it loses any fat it has and dries out. And when you reheat it, you can only hope. They tried to drown in sauce, but it was still dry to eat. But it seemed liked the other customers loved it. read more

Unfortunately we didn't look at the menu prior to making our reservation. This is NOT a restaurant for vegans or even vegetarians. Food is served family style. No Main plates/ entrees available for a vegetarian or vegan. Only small plates available. Even many of the small plate options could not be adjusted to accommodate ( ie Tater tots made with Gelatin, Pickles sometimes made with whey, Asparagus with cheese). We spent around a $100 for the 2 of us trying to make it work with the items on the menu, but unfortunately this was probably one of the worst dining experiences for us in a long time. Obviously no restaurant can cater to every possible dietary restriction, but a clever chef will usually keep a vegan/ vegetarian option or two available. Unfortunately this was not the case here. First off , during our visit, safety protocols were initiated due to Covid, so we were seated in the outside patio, but still there was ample room for distancing and lots of heaters that made the environment pleasant. I can't believe I'm writing this because I was so excited to eat here! My husband and I ordered a salad and steak to share. It took 30 mins for our meal to arrive. The steak was probably the worst steak I've ever had. I couldn't cut through most pieces, even with my steak knife. I noticed that the waiters would stand around, chit chat, and wait for the food at the kitchen instead of attending to the guests. While we waited we ordered drinks, I enjoyed my refreshing Unsweetened Ice Tea with a nice slice of lemon! Seared King Salmon~ This dish was as beautiful as it was to eat, it was hard to share! I would highly recommend this flavor ride! Salt Cod Fritters~ The fritters were delicious and beautifully presented, but the chutney underneath wasn't my favorite. Grilled Pork Collar~ The pork was grilled to perfection, just bursting with flavor, sunflower seeds added a nice crunch and the peaches were a nice touch! So juicy and topped with an incredible sauce pairing! Order this! Shigoku Oysters~ We split 6 dozen oysters between the 3 of us, since they are just $2 each on Wednesdays, my favorite vinegar it came with was the Lemon Verbena our server recommended! It's an acquired taste, they taste like they are straight from the sea and slide down easily to your mouth, high in Zinc, Vitamin B12, Iron, Selenium and Copper! Shigoku means "ultimate" in Japanese and since it's start in 2009 thanks to Taylor Shellfish these Pacific oysters go through a special tidal tumbling process twice a day. It makes the edges nice and smooth and you are left with nice deep cups! Half Roasted Duck~ The duck was tender and flavorful and I quite enjoyed the sweet corn, onion and rice pairing! Not to mention it was topped with fresh plump blackberries! I would definitely recommend dining at this fine dining restaurant, that made it's start in 2017, check out their weekly specials! This is one of our regular spots when I pass through Sac, when I have business SF-Sac-Reno thereabouts. This establishment has really grown over the years in quality, and while it's not quite Michelin-star ready their execution and craft is def top tier. A few favs: crudo (nice, substantial cuts of hamachi), tomato w/ watermelon, halibut platter (fava beans are a wonderful pairing). Ordered 4 dishes and 3 of the 4 were mediocre and one was good. Pork loin, overcooked. Should have been medium but was solidly well; so dry. The pork belly however was excellent but I can also easily smoke my own at home for practically free. Cod was cooked well but overall underwhelming. Potatoes came out barely warm and undercooked. Pea salad was the highlight; but only decent. Fresh mozzarella was decadent as was the egg. But overall I wasn't wowed I measure restaurants based on if I feel like I could cook the meal. I concede some of the sauces I couldn't replicate well, but the main on each dish (except the pea salad) I know I have cooked better. I would have to try, but I could easily have done it. A friend loves this place and wanted to go again, so she took me along. As a vegetarian, I'm usually hard-pressed to find plant-based jewels in the wilds of the animal-based kingdom. The biggest win for this restaurant is the ambiance. The location is a bit confusing (I passed by twice and didn't see it), but it really blends into the architecture of the neighborhood. It's in a cute low retro-industrial strip with a modern interior and comfortably lit without being cafeteria bright or Soprano-dim. The server was fantastic. She was helpful and responsive, explaining things in detail when we had questions. My main question was around the cauliflower, which is braised in a Carolina BBQ sauce. I didn't want something too vinegary, but she assured me it wasn't. And it was incredible. On that alone I should give this place five stars. Another highlight was the sopapillas. Can I give them an extra star for that? My only real criticisms were around the general service and timing. The plates came out at a bit of a glacial pace (which caused us to stay longer than we anticipated) and our server disappeared for about 20 minutes before offering us dessert, which didn't bother us, but slowed down our exit. This, combined with us not being mindful of the 2-hour policy, meant we were asked to leave by the owner. 50% our fault. But, instead of giving the typical cues leading up to the request, the owner was apologetic but pretty direct. My feedback would be to employ other lines like, "We hope you've enjoyed your time with us, please accept our apology as we want to honor our two-hour per table policy." "We appreciate you having dinner with us; we'd love to offer you a complimentary drink at the bar to make room for another reservation at 8pm." "Thanks for joining us tonight. We have another reservation for this table at 8pm, but we also want to make sure you received everything you need." There are so many ways for people to feel welcomed, but also turn tables quickly.
