Trying to get the small bowl of rice refilled or waters refilled is impossible! And when we got the bill, it had a 20% tip already added! When you get the credit card voucher, they ask for more tip! No where are you informed there is a mandatory "tip." I wonder if this "tip" goes to the staff and are taxes collected in these charges. When I questioned, I was told the old owners charged the same amount. I told them I had been coming there 20 years and that was not true. She said I was wrong. Upon leaving, another customer overheard and told me he had been coming there a long time as well and that I was right. They charged his party of 3 an 18% tip. My last time going there read more

The food here is mediocre a little too sweet and tangy from my taste. I had the spicy garlic chicken with fried rice. The price here is very expensive for the quality of food that you're receiving and the portion size is very small even when you order a large and I ordered two things of rice and it still wasn't enough. We were loyal Canton Cooks patrons with the former owners in Sandy Springs. However, it is clear that the new management does not know how to cook Chinese food. We ordered for Father's Day and all the dishes were almost inedible. The barbecued spare ribs had American bar-b-que sale on them! The other dishes were tasteless or had a strange taste. Is this restaurant better than the area's other Chinese restaurants? I used to think so. But it really isn't. I think I mainly like the memories of Christmas eves-past, when Canton Cooks was filled with families my daughter knew from her JCC camp. Driving through Sandy Springs we still stop by. And after every meal, like a broken record, my reaction is always "Eh. It was all right...." We got the $45 "Gourmet" Special. (Gourmet?!) The hot n sour soup was flavorful, but missing mushrooms and other ingredients that would give it character. I appreciate that they used white meat for our chicken and cashews. (It's generally made with thighs.) But the taste was sort of bland. Shrimp with vegetables was good, though there was an overload of broccoli and a paltry amount of other veggies. So, despite a meal that's no better than "all right" will this be the last time we'll go to Canton Cooks? Probably not. read more

I thought I was poisoned. The dumpling soup's pork inside the dumpling tasted like I suspected rotten meat would taste. I ordered takeout and opened it just 10 minutes from the restaurant. Both my wife and I agreed it was spoiled. I called the restaurant, and they said they would refund my money and bring me the receipt. They did not refund my money and brought me another container of soup. This was rotten as well. I have spent some time in China for work; the mentality is typical of Mainland China, give them more of the soup that costs pennies and keep the $10. I didn't do anything that evening except take care of my spouse, who had gastro issues due to the soup. The next day I brought back the soup to the restaurant. The front desk person would not let me speak to the manager, who she said was not there. Yet she did call back to a manager there who approved the credit to me for the soup. This is typical Asian business. An underling does all the negotiating while somewhere in the meeting is the CEO, owner, or general manager. I took the credit and asked, "is that all" Thinking I would at least get an apology or something, but no. I have been going to Canton Cooks for 20+ years, and since the new owners took possession a year or so ago, it has gone to rock bottom. The staff is less than polite, and the ambiance needed a refresh when I first visited 20+ years ago. I can't imagine what the kitchen looks like. Incredible Chinese spot in Sandy Springs!! My favorite dish is the beef chow fun and Canton Cooks does it well, reminds me of the authentic Chinese restaurants I've eaten in my past. I changed it up a bit and ordered some egg rolls for my appetizer instead of some soup and was not disappointed. The egg rolls are large & in charge! Quite a big appetizer if you are eating by yourself, but great to share with the table. You'll need to ask for the duck sauce if you like it or the hot mustard pairs well, too. I frequently stop by this restaurant to pick up take out. The food is good and generally the order/pick up is without issue. My recent experience was questionable as I paid for my meal and the cashier laid my money on the counter--instead of placing it in my hand. I didn't want to jump to any conclusions but it became obvious to me as his curt attitude continued when I asked about the time it will take to get my order. As a patron, I expect better treatment. Came here for an early dinner today (Sunday). I wasn't all that hungry, but ordered the pan fried noodles with chicken. Within 10 minutes, the meal was served piping hot! Decent price for the amount of food served. This is enough for two people to share. The pan fried noodles started out crispy, and, as it's supposed to, the noodles got less crispy as they soaked up the sauce/gravy. The sauce/gravy was not too salty, like many Chinese restaurants serve it, so this was a huge plus. Service was quick and efficient. I did do takeout several years back, but I should not have had let that experience (it was good but nothing great) keep me from this amazing food. I came here twice in the last couple weeks and the food was phenomenal both times, and the service was quick and not overbearing, i.e., precise. Like most Chinese restaurants, the service is extremely quick and efficient. The food comes popping out of the kitchen and is always hot. One of my friends had the shrimp with Chinese vegetables; he loved it, and felt like the portion was way too large. Another friend had the beef with Chinese vegetables and felt the same way, lots of food for too much to eat. My third friend, had what he thought was going to be a light lunch, just a bowl of chicken noodle soup, but it turned out to be a huge bowl of chicken noodle soup, and again more than he could eat. I had the shrimp egg foo yong, which was a dish that I remembered from my childhood in Birmingham, this was very different, completely smothered in gravy. Again, all that I could possibly eat, and then some all of the dishes, come with soup and fried rice, a chicken wing, and an eggroll. My parents are the biggest critics and we love this place. Although it is pricey the quality of the food is just spectacular. All of this was $100 including our tip. The lobster was fresh and cooked perfectly. They fry it and then toss it in the sauce. The chow fun was great cause they added all types of proteins in it. It was the perfect consistency because sometimes chow fun can be too oily. The star of the night was the sea bass. I get it every single time I come. It's so simple but the sea bass is so fresh and they steam it perfectly. It just melts in your mouth and the sauce balanced it out nicely. You honestly don't even need to eat it with any rice. My favorite dishes were the chicken wings and mongolian beef. The wings were crispy and seasoned well and the beef was sweet which I prefer. They give unlimited amount of white rice. I used to go to Canton Cooks II quite often to both dine-in and take-out. I have always been happy with their food. Parking is perfectly adequate as it's in a large strip mall. My wife and I went to Canton Cooks for dinner on a Sunday night and to our surprise it was slammed. We only had to wait about 15 minutes so that was good. They were cleaning up tables very quickly as people left. My wife had the sesame chicken and I had salt & pepper shrimp. Both dishes were very good. I can't give it 5 stars as it is pretty basic Chinese food. They have a rather large menu at this Chinese restaurant, but we tend to stick to the more standard American Chinese dishes. Overall I very much recommend Canton Cooks. Not sure why the second location closed and I think that has contributed to this one being even busier. Expect the place to be busy, but it's worth a wait since the food is extremely reliable and really good quality/flavor. read more

I've eating at Canton Cooks since they were in their original location on Buford Highway. I had an Uncle that loved this place and he always insisted we eat here whenever we got together which was almost every Sunday. Back in the good ole days (I'm going back at least 2 decades) the only people that you saw eating here were Taiwanese people. Since the Taiwanese community back then was pretty small-everyone knew each other it didn't feel like a restaurant but more like eating at a friend's house. Fast forward and the place still that coziness to it. Yes it has gotten a lot busier and has more of diverse group of eaters. The food remains the same.
