I wanted so badly to like this place. Ambiance is a 5/5 with the fantastic live music and interior design. The food leaves A LOT to be desired. Everything we ordered was overcooked and under-seasoned. When we mentioned this to the server, he said "it's all like that." RACISM & DISCRIMINATION is not okay. A few weeks ago my 3 African American friends and I (Latina) went to dine at this place. When the bill came it appeared to say $755.00, realizing it was an error we went ahead and tallied the bill ourselves and realized it should have been $125. We asked the waiter to please rectify the bill and he was very polite in doing so. He went to the cashier and returned with the same bill stating the total was $155. This was a hand written bill, btw. We explained to him that we initially tallied the bill and it should have been $125, he left and returned with the same bill except now it had been modified. Right under the tax entry they inserted an entry that said "Tip 25" which wasn't previously disclosed - even with that $25 tip the total should have been $150. He said the tip was 20% and we paid him $150. I returned yesterday with my mother and realized our tip was not included. Curiosity got the best of me and I asked our waiter, "If I wan't to come with a group of friends after how many patrons do you charge a tip?" he replied, "6 or 7". BOOM. There were only 4 of us in our initial party and my gut feeling was right. The cashier saw a group of African Americans and a Latina and profiled us. Surely she thought we would not be tipping the waiter and stooped as low as to embed a tip in the bill and even to overcharge us. HOW UNETHICAL to racially profile us and over charge us. I have been a patron of this family's business since I was a kid and my dad took us to Nuevo Leon. The three females present at this table are Registered Nurses who often dine out and we are very generous with our tips. Often leaving 30% - 40% in tips. I feel horrible that I suggested this place to my friends and we ended up being discriminated. Shame on you Canton Regio for this BS you pulled. read more

Another solid Mexican restaurant along 18th street in Pilsen. They don't have as many of the same things that you usually see in Mexican restaurants. like burritos or enchiladas, but what they do have is quite good. I had the house special, which was scrambled eggs with shredded beef and a salad, along with tortillas. Not bad for only $8. And then my friends got a half kilo of the skirt steak, which I tried and was amazing. They only accept cash which sucks, but they are BYOB which is cool, especially since there's a liquor store now right across the street. Here is the thing: 18th St is a wealth of good Mexican food. You can go in almost any direction and get an exceptional taco. What Canton Regio does, is give you an authentic regional experience, beyond what you may have encountered as Mexican food. When you eat here, you taste flavors you don't get anywhere else stateside! I am often disappointed with Mexican food in the US, because it is Tex-Mex, one-dimensional, and doesn't do a good job of representing the true techniques and generational recipes of Mexico. That happens at Canton Regio. Start with the Queso Fundido. IF YOU HEAR NOTHING ELSE, get the queso fundido. This melted blend of cheeses is SO packed with flavor, the minute you take your first bite, you'll know you need to order a second one. Pro-tip: load a chip with queso fundido, and a dollop of the nopal salsa (the one with cactus) On the note of salsas--they are so tastefully done. You can tell their tomatoes are dry roasted to dial down the acidity and showcase the flavor of a good ripe tomato, with a hint of char. None of the salsas are overly spicy, and the green one with the mint is so refreshing (and a good pick for folks who might not dig cilantro). Even if there are just two of you, order the half kilo of meat. It comes with beans, and corn and flour tortillas. My only complaint here is that the charro beans have pork (as they traditionally do), and there is no meatless option for beans. The meat though--dios mio--beautifully seasoned throughout, with a good char, but never dried out. Load your tortillas with a cebollita, a slice of meat, and nopal salsa, and you will experience heaven in your mouth. After eating here, you're going to feel so ripped off by what you've become accustomed to calling Mexican food. read more

Let's start with CASH ONLY and BYOB! Now that we've got that out the way, this place really was delicious and the service was great! The table comes with complimentary chips, salsa, and this tasty pico like with cactus dip (my favorite). We then moved on to more starters and the main courses... - Guac: Of all the items, the guac, sadly, was the worst. It was mashed avocado with no flavor. The guy next to me tickled me so as he asked for jalapenos, cilantro, limes, salt and pepper to give it some life. - Queso: It was good -- the flour tortillas plus the pico-ish dip made for nice little quesadillas - Skewers: 2 shrimp and 1 chicken. These skewers come out and it's a massive eye experience, lol. They are served from a rack with yummy vegetables alternating between the protein covered in a sauce. The shrimp was tasty, but I felt the chicken was a smidget over cooked. AND the 1/2 chicken (rotisserie chicken cook over mesquite burning coals). This deserves its own little paragraph. This chicken looked delightful. We asked for it and they said 20 minutes.. 20 minutes?! but we opted to go for it. It came out and was succulent! finger licking good and worth every bit of the 20 minute wait. And the entire meal was pretty reasonably priced IMO. After reading a review that said how the bill was overcharged right before going to dinner at said location, I decided to pay close attention to my bill. Sure enough I was overcharged! When I questioned the extra 43 dollars on my bill I was told it was 18% tip that was added to my bill. More like a 37% tip! I came here a few days ago. It was AWESOME. Cantón Regio is the truth. I went to Yelp and i randomly picked a place for my birthday dinner with my sister. I dont think I could have picked a better place. This place is a cornucopia that Delights the senses, it is a festive atmosphere worthy of the Mexican culture. The food is a show all by itself. It was well presented. Once our server got in gear the service was excellent. My sister got the Skewers. You get any combination choice of 3 for $18. For me the coup de gras was the Arrachera sold by the half kilo on up. I got 1 kilo cooked to perfection for $50. I was in beef heaven.  I couldn't eat it all. There was enough meat for me to have 2 more meals. I mean the first night I ate as much as I could without unbuttoning my pants. When you are done with the to go box ready they will happily supply more tortillas if you need more plus their special salsa and habanero sauce if you want it. Since it was a birthday dinner they surprised me with a birthday song which I wont spoil for you but you have to experience it for yourself.  It was AWESOME. I was the happiest I had been for this particular birthday thanks to great company and GREAT FOOD. Btw the place was packed. Even the upper level was filled. This place is no joke. It is on par with some of the best places to eat in the city when you compare  food, atmosphere and fun. They even have a live band Saturday night (maybe more nights but you would have to call and ask). I know people say, "I'm coming back!" BUT IT IS NO JOKE FOR ME, "I'M DEFINITELY GOING BACK!!!!!!!" The birthday song was so much fun I'm thinking of bringing my mom who has her birthday on April 3rd. Me & my other other half wanted Mexican food so we decided to try this spot in Pilsen. The exterior is beautiful. Loved it. We opened the door and the place was crowded at 12pm. The barely English speaking host promptly sat us down. We sat in the very back near the cooks. Nice tables, food smelled good, the workers were moving quite fast. The bus boy quickly placed our utensils, water, chips & salsa on the table before we could blink. The server came to the table who hardly spoke English but spoke enough to take our order. I didn't get his name but you'll see his pic. A few chips and salsa and a quick bathroom run and bam the food appeared. Presentation was on point, and it was delicious. We ordered steak tacos and it was a wise choice. Steak was seasoned perfectly, I usually do not eat refried beans -well mine were gone this time. Lol. The horchata was not that sweet, just right. Salsa was good, chips had some oil on them - assuming they make their own?? The bathroom was clean, nicely decorated, actually the entire spit was nicely decorated. This is such a wonderful steakhouse hidden in Pilsen!! The food is excellent. The skirt steak was well seasoned and delicious and the presentation of the skewers is awesome. The space itself has a rustic, cool feel. We went there on a Thursday, there was live music which added to the vibe. One thing to note is that it's cash only, which isn't a huge deal because there's an ATM in the restaurant but it could be good to go there with some cash and save yourself the ATM fees. In all, i would go there again and again. It's officially one of my new favorite places in Chicago. read more

The wife and I have always wanted to come here for the longest. My brother in law and sister always rave about this place and how we need to try it. Finally, we decided to come here on a Friday night. Since it was just us 2, we were seated right away in the upper floor. I loved the atmosphere and would definitely want to host my birthday here in the future. It is definitely a fun atmosphere and great for parties. We ordered the 1/2 Kilo Arracherra and the Steak, Shrimp, and Chicken Skewers. I refrained myself from ordering more because I always have a problem with over ordering. I was very proud of myself because we were extremely full and still had to pack the 1/2 Kilo home. The arracherra was amazing and everything I could have imagined it to be. Everyone had this dish on their table so you know it is a must get dish. The skewers were a popular entree here too, but I recommend sticking to the steak and shrimp. They start you off with complimentary scrambled egg tacos and chips/salsa. The salsas were all really fresh and tasty!! The chips were also pretty fresh and super thin just the way I like them! Special of the day was barbacoa plate with beans and rice. Everything tasted very homemade and yummy, albeit just a touch too salty. They give you a mini palmier cookie with the coffee too, so cute! I was in mood for Mexican breakfast and unfortunately Nuevo León burned down, so I decided to finally give canton regio a try. I'm glad I did. Immediately as I walked in I was greeted by the staff and seated. My waiter introduced his self and asked if I wanted coffee which was bought out immediately I looked at menu but only seen one breakfast item until Jhoan (waiter) told me the breakfast menu. I decided on the huevos rancheros with steak. It was excellent. The new ranchero sauce they use on eggs was very tasty. And the charro beans are amazing!! They still have the beat home made flour tortillas and the rice was good too. The waiter and staff took care of me way better then they used to at Nuevo León. My only complaint was the breakfast menu isn't on the actual menu. Price was a bit higher but still very reasonable. I will definitely continue to come back. read more

This new addition to Pilsen is a sister restaurant to the 18th St. Landmark, Nuevo Leon, run by the oldest son. I will start by saying that I loved seeing some of the old Nuevo Leon staff in this new spot but noticed a serious void of the ladies that used to run the show at Nuevo Leon, I'm referring to the serving staff that I have been waited on by since I was a kid, so that was a bit sad and as a matter of fact I didn't notice any female staff, which was a bit odd but I digress.. On to the delicious food, I was in with my grandmother who has been cooking me amazing authentic Mexican food my whole life so, obviously she is a tough critic. I was pleased to know that she really enjoyed her meal. (What she could finish at least. More on that to come) We started with the guac and chips and I was thrilled to find that it was the same as nuevo Leon's, chips and all :) I went for the Carne asada which came with the tasty, yet spicy frijoles charros, a large plate that I probably could have shared, which brings me to the only real criticism of this place, my grams Is a tiny thing and when she ordered the the brochetas (kabobs/skewers) I wish the waiter would have mentioned how much food it was going to be, it was enough for three people and also came with beans. We ended up taking a lot of food home but my husband was thrilled so alls well that ends well :) The decor is really nice, an old school Mexico vibe meets modern. The night we were in they had live music, which I enjoyed but they played so loud you couldn't hear eachother talk. Thankfully, the food kept us busy enough to not mind. Only complaints would be the noise (very high ceiling and open loft second floor) on a packed Saturday afternoon and because it is a narrow restaurant there is really nowhere for patrons to wait for a table, so they were swarming around our table because it was the closest to the door. So much meat. This place was quite the experience, we had a table of 12 and it was confusing but hilarious to order. They stated the kitchen was out of everything except for one item on the menu and also had no meat. My friend John decided to order for the whole table, the waiter then proceeded to take everyone else's order. Welp, looks like they had meat! There was so much meat it was unbelievable. Meat skewers, meat bowls full of steak, shrimp skewers, meat fajitas. I had the meat sweats at one point and I was loving it. Must try this place for the experience, everything here made no sense but it was wonderful.
