This new addition to Pilsen is a sister restaurant to the 18th St. Landmark, Nuevo Leon, run by the oldest son. I will start by saying that I loved seeing some of the old Nuevo Leon staff in this new spot but noticed a serious void of the ladies that used to run the show at Nuevo Leon, I'm referring to the serving staff that I have been waited on by since I was a kid, so that was a bit sad and as a matter of fact I didn't notice any female staff, which was a bit odd but I digress.. On to the delicious food, I was in with my grandmother who has been cooking me amazing authentic Mexican food my whole life so, obviously she is a tough critic. I was pleased to know that she really enjoyed her meal. (What she could finish at least. More on that to come) We started with the guac and chips and I was thrilled to find that it was the same as nuevo Leon's, chips and all :) I went for the Carne asada which came with the tasty, yet spicy frijoles charros, a large plate that I probably could have shared, which brings me to the only real criticism of this place, my grams Is a tiny thing and when she ordered the the brochetas (kabobs/skewers) I wish the waiter would have mentioned how much food it was going to be, it was enough for three people and also came with beans. We ended up taking a lot of food home but my husband was thrilled so alls well that ends well :) The decor is really nice, an old school Mexico vibe meets modern. Returned for another Sat night dinner with friends. Was told a 45 min wait and got seated in about 20 mins - WOOT! This time, we were upstairs in the loft area, which was fine except there is nothing absorbing the sound from the band playing below, so the sound was amplified. To be clear, the band was OUTSTANDING! While conversation was difficult, the band did not play for the entire meal, they finished well before our meal was even mid-stream. Our food was again OUTSTANDING, got the queso fundido w/chorizo, shrimp skewers and a kilo of arranchera - all with corn tortillas. The food was again OUTSTANDING! We brought beer and requested a bucket of ice ... overall, we were well taken care of - service was excellent! They came with plenty of corn and wheat tortillas. The wheat tortilla was a lot better than the corn for sure. Complimentary chips and 2 kinds of salsa was provided as well as a small bowl of frijoles soup. The soup itself was super rich and I was only able to take a couple spoonfuls. How have I not been to this place?!?!? The Mexican food lover in me is still wanting their food and this review is only a week past-due. Let me just say this is going to be a short, straight to the point, no fuss, no beating around the bush review. Ready??? Go eat at Canton Regio! As soon as you sit down you get their homemade salsas and fresh chips. My gf wanted to go downstairs and have them make her a gallon serving of the green sauce so we could take it home. I would not have complained. DEEEEEELISH! We ordered guac for an app. Probably the smoothest, creamiest, surprise your tastebuds guac I have ever had. As for the main course, we went with a friends recommendation for the Kilo of meet fajitas that include their homemade flour tortillas. All the other tables in the restaurant were enjoying the same with some taking part in the Shrimp Skewers, seemed to be a popular dish. All in all, yes, I will be back here to try what else their menu has to offer. A couple of key points if this is the only review you read and decide to go. Canton Regio is a BYOB Cash-Only establishment. There is an on-site ATM and there is a well stocked liquor store right across the street if needed (bring your own cork screw or bottle opener). Oh, and you visit during the Chicago winter season, make sure you have an extra layer on that you do not mind sitting and eating with. There is only one door. This was one of my favorite places to go when restaurants were open, so I called to place a delivery order since they started doing that due to lockdown. The two things that I considered bringing their rating down for was the fact that they don't take credit/debit cards. I know there's an ATM inside, but come on. I have to pay an ATM fee just to eat here. The second thing was while the live music was a nice touch, it can get obnoxiously loud at times. I was yelling at my girlfriend the entire time we were eating. That being said, the food was great. They have this steak by the pound deal, and it was cooked to perfection. Went on a Saturday night and it was busy as I thought it would be. The front area is very small and lots of people were packed in that small area. The wait was about 20 min, which wasn't that bad. There was live music which was a great touch. The songs were upbeat and oldies, loved them! The live music is a great plus. Ordered the shrimp and chicken. They were tasty. Also ordered the kilo Steak, it was nicely cooked and lots of flavor. The service was excellent. On of my favorite Mexican restaurants by far. This is a Mexican steak restaurant with all the Mexican decor and ambiance that we love. They sell steak by the kilo or 1/2 kilo. We got a 1/2 kilo arrachera, medium, which was more than enough for 2 people (we had left overs). It was perfectly seasoned with cebollitas and chile. The frijoles charros we're so good! The queso fundido with chorizo was delicious (that's hard to mess up). All the food was incredibly delicious and well-seasoned, but believe it or not, the best part were the tortillas de harina. I was full but I could not stop eating them. We had to buy a dozen of them to take home. Tortillas de harina are so hard to make so when you find a spot that does them well, it's surprising. It's BYOB and very inexpensive if you consider the quality of meat you're getting. The service was great, the hostess (which I'm sure was the manager) greeted us and although he said it would be a 20 min wait, we waited about 3 min. The server was nice and readily available. Although he did forgot the arroz, he was extremely apologetic. He did us a favor because we already had an abundance of food. So many times I get disappointed in Mexican restaurants because there's so many and the quality of the food is just not as good a "home". This is an exception. I enjoyed it very much. read more

While the staff was nice enough to put two tables together on the patio for our group, that is the extent of the compliments I will give in terms of service. Our waiter ended up being extremely rude to our table. It took our group a while to decide on what options we were interested in partaking in and so our waiter ended up not returning to our table for longer and longer periods of time. We decided to start off with a dessert and a few drinks. Finally, we realized that the menu did not have a good variety of options to chose from, and because some of the language was a bit ambiguous of what was included, we decided to ask if certain items came with certain dishes and found that the restaurant was not one we really wanted to dine in. As we had already ordered desert and drinks, we made the decision to get our checks and leave. Should be simple enough, correct? Well, our waiter decided to charge us for chips and salsa which, had we asked for chips and salsa would have been okay. When we questioned the waiter regarding the charge ("Could you please explain why we are being charged for chips and salsa when we did not ask for it?") he said "Ok, we will take care of it" only to return with a new check. Seems great, right? Except for the fact that, while he handed over the new check, he decided that our table was done eating (probably unhappy with our decision to leave) and started taking all of the dishes away WHILE WE WERE STILL EATING THEM. You know, the dessert we PAID for? The menu itself has limited options that are not too different from one another; and for a Hispanic restaurant to not serve rice with a chicken and bean dish was quite surprising to me ($2.50 for side of rice). The tacos only allow steak with no option for pork or chicken (which makes it increasingly difficult for non-steak eaters). Also the flan tasted off-- it was topped with a rum glaze maraschino cherry that caused the flan to soak the flavor in but like, in a weird way. Definitely was not a good mix of flavors. Also, who puts maraschino cherries on top of flan, never seen that before. read more

I'm very sorry we spent time and money at this place. I had very high expectations, being a Mexican from the magnificent city of Monterrey, but none of them were met. First of all, there was a complete chaos at the entrance. The hostess, rather than being greeting people and putting names on the list once they walk in, she's running up and down and suddenly disappears while more people keep coming in and blocking the doorway. The "frijoles charros" (charros beans) leave the kitchen by the dozen and all the people who don't know what they are or what they should taste like, would probably like them. But those beans are the worst imitation of charros beans. They don't even deserve the name. Finally, the steak tacos were bland. I am glad I didn't ordered anything more structured than those simple tacos. I am giving a third star because the salsas were not bad. The place itself is nice inside and I liked the decoration, but to me it's the perfect trap for people who either don't know the northern Mexican gastronomy or cannot differentiate between good and mediocre. I've been here a few times now, and I can honestly say it's pretty consistent. The food is very good, and the servers are all friendly. Their arrachera is the best I've had. The quality of the beef is not going to be prime, but it's damn flavorful. We ordered the queso panela appetizer this time, and it was fantastic. It was cheesey, yet not overly rich because of the grilled peppers and onions in it. I loved every bit of it. Their guacamole was super fresh and creamy too. Eating at Canton Regio is an experience. Every time I eat here I am reminded why this is one of my favorite restaurants in Chicago. The service is fast, the atmosphere is lively, and the food is absolutely amazing - the tortillas, the salsas, the small delicious surprises the staff bring to your table before your meal comes out. For 2 people, I always go with the Queso Panela and a half kilo. It's more than enough food and having leftovers to eat later is always welcomed. So I went there the other day with a group of 7 people expecting a good time. We got seated on the second floor; it was hot and humid outside just to let you know. But upstairs was pretty bad I was sweating buckets it was uncomfortable. -This part is more for the owners or the management-BUY A FAN! Not little fans meant for a small desk but big ones. They had the door open it did not help at all. I asked for a fan they did not have one. Or just crank up the air conditioner because we are paying good money in your restaurant I expect to be comfortable. So if you visit this place be wary of the second floor on a hot day . Came here for my bday and really liked the experience. The staff was very friendly and attentive, the food was cheap and the portions abundant. The menu is not super extensive. This restaurant specializes in arrachera (marinated grilled flank steak with cippolini onions) and a side of house made tortillas and charro beans. Everything was delicious! Unbelievable eating! A little tasting of their food with your chips and 3 kinds of salsa and I was already sold. There were beautiful details like chopped nopal in one of the salsas, a signature style in their serving platters into which their meat (served by the kilo), and a cash only policy. The meat didn't even need salsa it was so incredibly savory and the chips for that matter didn't need the salsa either, they were so obviously fresh. The servers all had restaurant T-shirt's that had different adjectives on their backs that could have easily referred to both the food and the servers: genuino, sabroso, norteño, exquisito. This place was the highlight meal of my stay in Chicago and had my Uber driver not suggested it, I would have felt like I missed something while here. They serve breakfast, too!
