I was delighted with my order. Two pieces with fries and coleslaw great value the fish was actual cod cooked perfectly. The batter was light and crunchy. The fish was fresh and juicy. Yelpers have steered me wrong on this one. I ordered a one-piece fish and chip meal which included coleslaw. I've had fish and chips in Europe, Seattle, and other places in the Bay Area. Let's start by how the fish smelled "fishy" which is an indication of it not being fresh, and had a bloodline that easily occupied 17% of the piece I had, which is an indication that the fish either died on the line, is old, or was not handled properly. Maybe it wasn't cod at all. Regardless, eating fish should never smell "fishy". Best used for fish broth instead. Perhaps I should have sent it back to the kitchen it at first bite, but I wanted to give it a chance. Also, The fish must have been a more mature fish as the "flake" layers were large. I'm not sure anyone cooking the food is "tasting" the ingredients. The batter extremely bland, completely unseasoned. Batter of the fish is moderately thick, not something I prefer, and seems a cheap way for an establishment to have patrons feel like they're getting their money's worth. Proper "fish and chips" have a strong, thin, delicate crust (like a thick tempura) that are nicely seasoned. Had it been seasoned at all, it may have been more acceptable. My favorite fish and chip experiences are where the flakes are light, fluffy, and easily flake apart, combined with a thin, crisp of pleasantly-seasoned crust. Where the inside of the crust is almost just as crispy at the outside. Not where the inside is moist because it was too thick to begin with. The balance of texture should be delightful. This was not, it was clunky/cumbersome. Nearly the entire side of one side my fish was a huge bloodline about an inch wide and a quarter inch deep. It smelled of decaying fish, the texture dense, unpleasant, inedible. Keep in mind I'm a person who loves to eat liver and offal, point being that on this fish, the bloodline is not tasty. House tartar sauce was far too thick and creamy for this fish. You want a tartar sauce that will cut the richness of fried food, not make it feel heavier. Coleslaw tasted like chlorinated water as can happen when the cabbage isn't prepped properly. Sprinkling one teaspoon salt per pound of shredded cabbage, tossing to evenly distribute, and letting it sit for an hour will remedy the poor tap water taste, improve crispness, and it won't end up watery over time. The thick cut french fries, on the other hand were pretty good. Certainly not triple fried, but quite respectable. Crispy on the outside, soft, grainy (due to potato variety) on the inside, lightly seasoned, freshly fried. Service was with a smile, nice and polite. Clean establishment. Unfortunately, the fish did not live up to the what the restaurant insinuates as it's signature dish. Maybe other customers don't care, don't notice, or don't know. Very disappointed. Still searching for a place with great fish and chips where I don't have to travel far to get it. Mel's Fish & Chips in Santa Rosa is pretty good, not better than a skilled U.K. version but tasty and satisfying. Where they excel is with their large fresh shrimp meal and well seasoned batter. Will have to satisfy my craving there for the time being. read more

I've been hearing about this place for a couple years now and finally decided to make a short trip for fish and chips. The shop is kind of small but I feel like the best fish and chips come from little hole in the wall joints and I have to say they were pretty good. The fish and chips came out fresh and hot. I ordered the two piece meal and a scrimshaw to drink. The portions are quite large and the best part of the meal is the breading on the fish. I could honestly eat the breading by itself. There was something in the flavor that reminded me of the fair and I'm huge fan of fried fair food. I would definitely visit this cute little spot again. read more

This is a small Cafe off the freeway in Rohnert Park. I am crazy about the sampler platter. Two big pieces of batter fried Cod, two huge fried butterfly shrimps, two fried oysters seasoned pub fries, and Cole slaw. Sounds like a lot of food, but, I can eat it all by myself no problem. Took my car in for a wash down the street and there was a bit of a wait, so I stopped here for lunch. I wasn't expecting anything out of the ordinary but was I pleasantly surprised. It was a Sunday afternoon and it there was one table eating. Otherwise it was quiet. One of the things I miss from my time in Boston are the roadside seafood shacks turning out great fried seafood. This is the first west coast place that reminded me of back east. Fish was super fresh with a light crispy and flavorful batter. Shrimp was similarly good. "Chips" were wedges but really well cooked with a crispy exterior and soft interior. The cole slaw was fresh and crisp and a nice foil to the fried food. Even the cocktail sauce had a little twist that made it delicious. It's always hard to find simple food using fresh ingredients executed well, as simple of a formula as it is. This place gets it right and they deserve to be wildly successful during a difficult period for restaurants. If only they would serve fried clams, I might eat there everyday! Oh my gosh! The fish abs chips here are outstanding! Moved up here about 4 months ago from the Bay Area. Been trying out different places and was looking for good fish and chips. Fish pieces were large and fried nice and crispy on the outside and flaky inside. Chips were wedges of potatoes and also crispy but moist inside. Came with Cole slaw. Incredible food. Yes it wasn't inexpensive. I got the two fish and should have had just 1. My friend and I shared the zucchini and mushrooms which were incredibly great. This was my second visit here. The food is very good. Very tasty fish. That being said the last time we were here was Saturday 6/24. My husband got fish and chips, I got calamari. This was maybe 5:30pm. Around 7pm I started feeling very queasy and by 8pm I was violently ill, every 30 minutes. Went to urgent care and it was confirmed to be severe food poisoning. Initially I thought it was just me, but early this morning my husband become violently ill to. We hadn't had anything else before we ate here and I didn't(couldnt) eat anything else after I left here. I hope this was an isolated incident. Whats scary is that the food didn't taste or smell off at all so I wonder if it could be the oil used to cook? read more

Three shots at Cape Cod so far. Have to see if they could become our new go-to spot for fish and chips. -- 1) Late in the day and they had run out of cole slaw. Wouldn't sub anything for it, so we cancelled and agreed to try again in a couple of days. 2) Two combos with wonderfully battered fish, generous portions, fat fries, and a tangy cole slaw. A keeper. 3) One fish combo and one calamari combo. Fish was still good (if not quite as delicious as the last visit), while the calamari wasn't cooked through and lacked flavor. Disappointing. Deliciousness!! This is my new favorite place in Petaluma. First, the fish were crispy very tasty, the steak fries were fried with garlic out of this world. Next was the fried mushroom, they were fat and the first bite was also yummy. We also got some calamari, came with a chunky marinara, and tar tar sauce and lemon it was scrumptious. And finally we also had the clam chowder, I was thinking wow, flavorful, chunky, and not salty. The clams were chunky, I couldn't get enough. All in all I give it a 10 did not disappoint. read more

Been craving fish n chips so decided to give them a try. Ordered through the website which stated the order would be ready for pick-up in 20 minutes. Order ended up taking an hour. We ordered an assortment of items. Food was bland. Hot dogs were cold and zucchini batter wasn't cooked all the way through. Fish was crispy, but no seasoning at all. I moved to the east bay and would come here every time I came to visit family. I don't know if there is different owners but it fell off. I will not be coming back. This was just okay. We ended up leaving a lot of the fish uneaten. The batter was raw, just under the fried part. The fish was cooked but having a bit of raw batter in there made it not so delicious. I'm giving 3 stars instead of two because their website said, "bear with us" their big fryer was not working so they were using a small fryer. So maybe that was the problem. The clam chowder was okay, the taste was nice but crunchy celery and I don't think I got any clams. The tarter sauce smelled off and the sour dough bread bowl felt a little day old. This place is amazing. Once walking in, we were greeted by the cook and the lady in the front. We ended up ordering the calamari, two oysters, and the family meal that came with 7 pieces of cod with a pint of coleslaw and chips ($35). The fried cod was enormous! About three times the size of what I was used to getting from restaurants. Still, it tasted super fresh, as if it wasn't frozen before, and the batter was very crispy. The same was for the calamari and the oysters. Everything was so yummy! A plus was how considerate the lady was. Usually when one orders fish and chips you get soggy fish and soggy chips :( Not here! The fries were fresh wedge cut and super crispy on the outside and potato-y on the inside , exactly the way it's supposed to be. Fresh REAL garlic on the fries also. Not greasy, not soggy. Hands down the best Fish and Chips I've had. Go in knowing the following: 1) These are battered style F&C - not breaded. They are deep fried and very greasy. This is probably why I love them. 2) The chips are steak fry big and nice and crispy. 3) Bring cash. A two piece F&C meal with THICK coleslaw is about $10. It will satisfy two. This place sits in tiny hole in the wall next to Oliver's Market. Ambiance inside consists of two fish mounted on the wall and a tiny sailor-wheel clock. There are some tables inside and outside, but what's really money is the food. I haven't had anything but the F&C - and I love them EVERY time. Super crispy, slightly greasy and nice and big. If you are having a craving for fresh, deep fried sea food, look no further. Cap Cod fish and chips has been located in Cotati for as long as I can remember. Granted, this is their newer and much nicer location. When you enter Cape Cod, you are welcomed with the aroma of mouthwatering seafood. Their clean modern restaurant has a good amount of seating. You can sit up front and look out the windows. Or, can tuck yourself in the back for more privacy. I prefer to sit in the back. It's very quiet back there. You will be seated promptly and given a simple 2 sided, lamented menu. I have never been disappointed here. They serve generous pieces of cod. Since chowder is one of those "hit or miss" kind of things, their chowder is pretty good compared to others. You can definitely get all of your seafood cravings taken care of here, instead of driving out to the beach. They only thing Cape Cod is missing is the smell of the salty air and the sound of the waves crashing. read more

Something changed with the fish!!!! This is the 4th or 5th time I visited looking forward to tasty fish and chips. It was piping hot and crispy. Everything looked very fresh. The fish thickness had changed. Some else said something of very little fish encased in batter. Indeed, this appears to be true. I was not tasting much fish until I took a closer look. I would say if I put the top and bottom layer of batter together that it would be just about equal the thickness of the fish. Before, the thickness of the fish was nearly double the thickness of the layers of batter. It was a hefty block of fish with not too much batter. I'm no fool. This has turned into a rip. The batter is beautifully crispy, but I did not come here for batter and chips with fish waved over it. I was more than willing to make a 30 mile trip for what was a great place until someone in the back decided to skimp on the fish. Finishing up I was planning in my head about finding a new place to have lunch with a friend - not returning to Batter'n Chips(with a hint of fish). Not very good quality fish anymore.
