Wow, I have not had a good Chinese restaurant experience in about a year... I'm so glad I came here. We had a 9-course meal here, similar to a wedding celebration. We got the canh chua (Vietnamese sour soup with catfish), stir-fried beef, bo luc lac (shaken beef), sweet and sour fried pork ribs, HOUSE-STYLE FRIED FISH FILLET, KUNG PAO CHICKEN, STIR-FRIED EGGPLANT WITH PORK, honey walnut shrimp, and steamed fish with ginger, and complimentary orange slices at the end. Everything was absolutely delicious and I can't wait to go back to get my favorite items. I loved the fish fillet and kung pao chicken! The white rice was okay, but I would probably eat the entrees with my own rice at home. Their rice was a little on the dry side. I would like to be able to give a review for the food. Unfortunately, it wasn't possible. We tried to call in to order, but they won't pick up the phone. We went directly to the restaurant, and stood and waited. We asked the old guy at the register to order to go, but he tells us to look at the menu. We already knew what to order, but we complied and looked at the menu. After waiting for 10 minutes just to order, he still ignored us and won't take our order. My wife, her mom, and I had a dentist appointment in Little Saigon (Westminster), so decided to have a dine-in lunch nearby. Capital Seafood Restaurant opened at 11am; the wait was well worth it. All three of us loved it. There is a decent size dedicated parking lot just for the standalone restaurant, so was able to find easy parking. We were greeted immediately and directed to a circular booth, giving the three of us plenty of space. The inside space looked recently renovated, with a dedicated banquet room, and two dining hall wings. Hot complementary hot tea was brought for all, and ice water later when I specifically asked for it. Service was excellent throughout. The menu is a book, with the first two pages dedicated to a large lunch menu. Here it doesn't come with any additions (i.e. no soup or egg roll), but white rice is included and served family style. What it does have is a large selection (a whopping 53 different items), including some items I've never seen on a lunch before, all for $13.50. The menu is displayed on the first page (27 items) of the menu book, with the standard vegetarian, chicken, beef, or pork dishes. But by turning the page, one gets to another 26, this time mostly seafood. Many of the items caught by eye. L36 -Ship with Garlic Sauce - it came with big jumbo headless/shell-off shrimp, using a dark pungent sauce that I really liked. Vegetables were green and red peppers, red onions, and a lot of wood ear mushrooms (which I really like). It's a dish I would recommend, especially at this price point. L53 - Pan Fried Whole Fish - didn't really expect much from this, but asked the waitress what type of fish (was expecting tilapia or sway). When she answered 'flounder', I had to try it....and it was much, much better than I expected for the lunch price. It was a WHOLE expertly prepared flounder, with a crisp batter that I enjoyed, and a sweet delicate meat. It came with 2 sauces (soy based, sweet/sour), more for the batter. It was served immediately after it had been prepared. I really loved it, and felt it was a bargain for the price. 90- House Chow Mein HK style ($17) - a disk of deep fried chow mein, topped with a mixture of greens and different meats (including shrimp), in a lighter sauce. It was served immediately after preparation, which allowed us to choose if we want to eat the noodles while still crispy, or let the sauce soak in. Portions are not huge (even for the normal menu item like the pan fried noodles), but very appropriate for the prices. The three of us were able to finish our meal, with no need for take home containers. Soda is only provided from cans ($2.75 each) and I got a bottle of Tsingtao for $5. The check was brought to the table, with a 3% service charge for use of credit card. I enjoy doing a little research about the history of a restaurant like this. On a preliminary scan, there are multiple restaurants with the name of Capital Seafood in the LA/OC area: This location (with the original name of Capital Seafood, having domain of capitalseafoodgg.com) was founded in 1996 by immigrants from Cambodia, and recently was taken over by the original owner's son. There is a different restaurant (also named Capital Seafood, under the Capital Seafood Group in Irvine) running 3 Capital Noodle Bars in Irvine, Costa Mesa, and Brea, along with a Capital Seafood Restaurant in Irvine. This group seems to be related to Kim Tar (a SGV restaurant founded in 1982 in Monterey Park), signifying that they are using those original recipes in their restaurant. This location doesn't seem to be operated by that group, instead run as a separate restaurant. There is also a New Capital Seafood Restaurant in Rowland Heights, which doesn't seem to be operationally related to either one, though most likely branching off at some point. The only thing common seems to be the 'Capital' name (and the assumption that the owners/operators are probably related). read more

I would like to give this place 5 stars. However their 'House Special' dishes (pork chop, squid, etc.) have enough sugar to ruin your appetize for desserts. Why so sweet? Is it a Viet-Chinese cuisine thing? I notice Filipino foods are also very sweet (and deep fried). Another well-known Viet-Chinese restaurant, Kim Tar, in LA also use way too much sugar. Wanted fresh live lobster and this place had the best price per lb. To give you an idea, Kings Fish House was $67/lb, the other Capital Seafood at Irvine Spectrum was $45/lb, and this place was like $28.99/lb. So we made the drive to Garden Grove. What stood out to me over the Capital Seafood in Irvine was the much friendlier service and the 90s R&B music in the background which was cool. Got the Lobster with house special sauce, Roasted duck with steam buns ($50), and Sautéed Pea sprouts veggies. * The lobster was definitely the star but just know the sauce is very buttery so may try a lighter sauce next time. We were looking for a Chinese restaurant in Garden Grove yesterday and had seen all the recent reviews for Capital Seafood. Since there were only two of us there we knew we'd be bringing home a lot of food. We ordered salt and pepper shrimp, a beef dish, deep fried tofu and some stir fried green beans with pork. All the dishes were delicious and cooked well. Service was great as we had come before the restaurant was busy at 5pm. The restaurant itself seemed clean and was setup to handle large groups of. I've been going to Capital Seafood with my friends and family for a very long time, and after a very long hiatus, I finally got to try it again with my brother. The dishes were cooked to perfection, and if you're having that house special type of feeling alongside some really great and fresh seafood, I highly recommend the Capital Seafood restaurant, as now the son is a current owner and executive chef. Really great for the dishes overall around. I highly recommend the house special fish and the house special squid. The main point is the food and is why we initially came here. Our go to spot seafood port closed down and we've been trying to find a nearer spot to replace that. If you're looking for a home cooked family style Chinese meal. Look no further, Capital Seafood has been a staple of mine for years. Recently I ordered to go and was reminded of why I couldn't stop ordering from this place when I was younger. Kung Pao Chicken: 9.5/10 I'm not talking about the soft, chewy kung pao that you find at most other establishments. capital does it exactly how I like it by making this dish with a nice crisp. The flavor is on point and I find myself reminded of my childhood where I would eat 7 bowls of rice with this dish alone. House special Shrimp: 9.5/10 Light, battered, and seasoned extremely well. There's no lack of flavor as you bite into these. They're wok fried with scallions and garlic as well to give it an alluring aroma. Definitely a staple whenever I order from here! I can't say from personal experience about the service as I haven't dined in recently but every time I come to pick up my food, the servers are laughing and having conversations with their guests. Not authentic canto flavors. This is definitely different from all the other capital seafoods. The taste and quality is not good. It's passable, just below average but would not return. The noodles were cooked but hard in the middle, the sprouts didn't have that garlicky flavor. In fact non of the dishes have the signature wok hei smoke. The fried rice was also just ok, felt like they didn't know how to do a proper cook on the egg or rice. The honey walnut shrimp had no sweetness, the salt and pepper squid's batter was bland and thick. No flavor in the squid and even pouring the extra salt and pepper that came with the dish, it added no flavor. Didn't give red vinegar/white pepper for the fish maw soup. Probably Cambodian-Chinese family owned. The older sweet lady taking our order and helping us the entire time was wonderful! There was a big language barrier but bless her heart we were all trying to understand each other. Other than that she was really attentive and like a caring grandmother who takes care of you. We ordered the live house special lobster with noodles, the fried intestines, salt and pepper chicken wings, and the house special calamari. Everything was amazing I'm not sure why so many unfavorable reviews. The house special sauce complimented the lobster really good I enjoyed the flavors! The noodles were cooked perfectly and thick and bouncy how I like them. You must also get the house special calamari! I read good reviews on it and it lives up to its hype! It was deep fried but covered in the house special sauce which might be the same as the lobster sauce. They were big rings and piping hot. The salt and pepper wings were cool but nothing too crazy. They were kind of pink still inside but I'm sure they were fully cooked. I love the toppings it came with; big chunks of green onions, white onions, and Serrano peppers. The fried intestines were good but average. They were paired with pickled veggies and sweet and sour sauce. All foods were delicious we really enjoyed it! They were all perfectly cooked and the flavors all went together so well! This place is packed on Sunday dinner. Also it's a place where a lot of families come to celebration bdays. We waited for 20mins for table for 3, and 10mins to order. The foods came out one dish at a time, with 10-15mins gap. We ordered 4 dishes and by the time we down with dish one, we have to wait 5mins for the next and so forth. They are popular with lobsters since 90% of tables have lobster (we didn't) and they came out fast....The foods are good, nice portion, and tasty. Service is great, friendly and helpful...wish the foods can come out faster. The place is a typical Chinese style, just more of modern side and clean and airy.
