I had a 6pm reservation on Saturday, January 16th, 2021. From start to finish this was one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. The waiter came to our table and did not introduce himself, his attitude immediately made us feel ill at ease. I asked for a wine list and he refused to give it me. Instead, he replied "red or white"? Obviously, a fine dining establishment such as this offers many more options. In an effort not to appear difficult, I asked what the white wines by the glass were. He rattled off a handful of options and then pushed me on ordering the Chardonnay. I explained that I did not like Chardonnay and ordered the house Pinot Grigio. My dining companion ordered a Grey Goose dirty martini. The waiter returned to the table with only my glass of wine (the color of which looked suspiciously like Chardonnay) and asked me to try it. I replied that I wanted to wait until my dining companion and I both had beverages. He made a complaint about the bar as he walked away and returned with the martini. I tried a sip of the wine which was fine. The waiter returned to the table and asked how the wine was, to which I replied good and he smugly retorted "it's not Pinot Grigio". When I am at a restaurant I expect to receive what I ordered. It was wildly inappropriate for the waiter to attempt to trick me into ordering the more expensive wine. First of all, I should have been given the wine list I requested, then I should have been brought the wine I ordered. The waiter actually had the audacity to charge me for the wine I did NOT order which of course was 50% more than the wine I ordered. This unfortunately, was not even the most egregious error made by this person. He had an inappropriate comfort level with our table and absolutely no respect for personal space. He made me incredibly uncomfortable by putting his hand on the back of my chair while he was at our table. At one point he really crossed the line by putting his hand on my bare shoulder. This is completely unacceptable behavior for anyone but especially a waiter. I did not give you permission to touch me, never mind during a global pandemic in which we have created a contactless culture. I could barely eat the food because I was so absolutely disgusted by this inappropriate behavior. To make matters worse, the table across from us asked another waiter the name of our server to which he replied we just call him "retard". I can not comprehend how an employee would use such a vile and offensive word. This is yet another example of the employees lack of respect. That comment also clearly shows that this waiter's peers do not hold him in high regard. According to my receipt the server's name was Chris. It is my sincere hope that this is not the culture cultivated by Capriccio. After this horrific experience I will never step foot in this establishment again. read more

Cappriccio is a Providence Classic, if you want great food thats been sereved as long as I can remember you must try this place. My wife and I both ordered the Chicken Parm and it tasted so good. They use real cheese. The service is always top notch. It is an old school place with old world charm. Restaurants like Cappriccio are not around anymore. It's the classic top shelf Italian restaurant. We started with cocktails in the back bar in comfortable chairs and a muffled atmosphere allowing us to converse without distraction. We went to our table and got calamari and spinach salad for appetizers. Delicious. Their calamari is undoubtedly the finest in the state. Light and fresh, not oily at all. Our table ordered the rack of lamb, a generous portion, a massive beef Wellington, salmon, and table side prepared steak Diane. We all raved over our meals. No room for dessert or coffee. I will add that their wine is quite expensive but there are ways around that. And I would say that the time between courses was over 30 minutes. Too long. Regardless if those two minor flaws, 5 stars for sure. You will not be disappointed. read more

We dined here a couple of weeks ago,and I have been thinking of going back ever since. The food was amazing, we started with the fried Calamari and the Mozzarella in Carozza. The Calamari was very tasty and tender. The Mozzarella was also delicious,and we loved the arrabiata sauce. Next we moved on to the entree, I chose the Veal Chop and it too was delicious and cooked to perfection. My husband had the Lobster Cardinale which he remarked several times that it was excellent. Our server was very informative, attentive,and friendly. We enjoyed our dinner immensely, and definitely will be back in the near future. read more

I have lived in Providence for a number of years now and made it to most restaurants around town but this is the first time I had been to Capriccio. They have valet right out front and then you walk down the stairs into the restaurant. The atmosphere is great and very old italy. It had a great ambiance to it. The menu is vast and it is great to have an idea of what you want before you open up the menu otherwise you can get lost in it. Our waiter service was honestly awful. We felt like he ignored us half the night which is probably why our dinner was almost 3 hours. When ordering entrees he did not even ask us if we wanted to have a salad or pasta as the side and instead when I asked if mine came with a salad he said "if you want" and to me that meant, for an extra cost. I probed him again and found out that it came with my meal. Later in the night he came back and re-asked us how many salads and we asked him again if it came with our meals. It just seemed very odd to me. My mom asked for the dressing on the side and my dad ordered the oil and vinegar but when all 5 salads came out we all had dressing on the side and we all had oil and vinegar (partly because he did not even ask us what dressing we wanted) we all assumed there was just a house dressing when he did not ask. For an appetizer we decided to order an entree and we got the kobe meatballs and penne. Probably the best pasta I have had in a restaurant and amazing meatballs. When our meals were served, my dad got his entree about 5-10 minutes before the rest of us and it lead to an awkward lag. In an upscale restaurant, with 2 waiters for a table, we assumed that they would at least be able to give us all our meal at the same time. We were all kind of annoyed at this point but then we tried the food and it was spectacular. The chef knows what he is doing! Dishes that we ordered include beef wellington, scallops risotto, haddock, filet mignon, and the lemon sol. They were all amazing dishes and I would order any of them again. A decade ago, or a little more, Capriccio was still turning out very high quality meals. Even then, the atmosphere was dated, but it was forgivable thanks to the excellent service and great food. However, the tides have turned. Capriccio needs to upgrade to 2013. I noticed it starting to slip several years ago when I had, I kid you not, canned black California olives in my salad. The bar needs a modernized drink list made from real, fresh ingredients- the "pomegranate" martini I ordered- after having to ask if they made special martinis- was worse than mixing Popov with Kool Aid. Our waiter was earnest but not at the previous Capriccio level of professionalism or speed. Most importantly- the food. Oysters were good and fresh, I will say. I'm someone who likes to order specials in a good restaurant because I expect it to be something interesting that the chef wants to make (versus in a bad restaurant, where it's something that needs to be pushed before it goes rotten). So I went for a pasta special with crab, only to find that there was no crab. Listen. I don't like to make a fuss, I don't get too many date nights, and I'm not looking to complain. I cook from scratch 5/7 nights a week, inspired by Jamie Oliver, Julia Child, etc- I'm still learning, but I try. I grew up in an Italian family eating anchovies, shrimp, lobster, and all types of fish from birth- literally, at a few months old, Nonna loved to feed babies pastina mixed with homemade fish stock, and my grandfather took us clamming on the Cape in summers, as well as netting blue crab in Little Compton to bring home and grill. What I'm trying to say is that I know whether or not there is crab in my pasta, or even crab broth, and there simply wasn't. After I pointed out the lack of "flaked crab" explicitly stated in the special description, my waiter appropriately went back and discussed with the chef, who clearly instructed him to go back and argue with me- he was always polite, and I could tell it pained him to do so, but while he conceded that there was no visible crab meat, there was "crab stock" in the sauce. Let's say there was- which there wasn't- the dish wasn't as described, and even more importantly, wasn't good. It was dull. Capriccio, I don't want to see you die. It was a Saturday and you were empty. Modernize your decor, shrink your menu (and your prices) a bit and Gordon Ramsay yourselves before it's too late. After visiting many restaurants in Providence this is by far the worst. After getting sat directly next to the kitchen on the first visit, with a waiter who did not acknowledge our existence, I said I would never go again. However I decided to give this restaurant another try as I considered it a fluke. On my next visit we were sat at the same table, what are the odds! After asking politely to be moved, the service immediately degraded and we left after one drink. I do not think the third time will be the charm at this establishment. Unless you are royalty or tip off your waiter, do not expect good service here. Much better dining experiences in Providence! read more

In town for business and decided to stop in for a quick bite. It seemed very nice with the tables configured for a "fining dining" atmosphere. I sat at the bar and ordered the Scallop Risotto which was nicely prepared. Salad and bread were average. I also ordered a Sprite which came in a small rocks glass (roughly 4oz w/ ice). Of course I finished it in two sips and proceeded to get a refill. I'm glad I only got one because it ended up being 3/per. Another review, that I felt that I had to write. This place is very classy, with great atmosphere, and the food and the staff are top notch. I have been going there for over 20 years now, and my wife and I are frequent patrons for at least six years now. I can't say enough good things are this restaurant, from the valet parking, to the food, to the staff. They make you feel like family. The restaurant has changed a little in the last few years with a renovation. They used to have a huge bar with jazz every weekend, but then they renovated and made the bar smaller, and added more private rooms for big parties. Capriccio offers up a very specific experience that some people will love and others will intensely dislike. First, there's the look-and-feel. You enter through a regal exterior, but plummet down a long flight of stairs into a dark basement with an odd smattering of art. Some parts are beautiful, some look cheesy, and overall the visual just doesn't quite hang together. Our waiter really put the wait in his job. He came by to check on whether we were ready for a drink, we said we needed a moment, and he ... disappeared. Several people at the table kept looking around, and one of us eventually went by to find him, it was that long. He seemed to be serving only one other table. This was repeated with how long any food took to arrive. I suspect this was all to make sure enough wine got cleared. In terms of service, early on one of our party tried to get a sense of how big the dishes are to determine how much to order. This is always a tough question, of course -- but also the kind of question a waiter at a fine dining restaurant ought to be able to handle gracefully (and I've seen many do so, well). Our waiter could not have been less helpful. He clearly had no idea how to answer such a question; instead he tried to be a wise guy about it, which was not particularly funny and certainly uninformative, making it annoying. The prices on the wine list will startle you a bit even if you're on an expense account. We ended up with a nearly-three-digit 2011 Barolo that was fine if unspectacular. When we ordered a second bottle, the waiter came by and showed us the label. One person at our table noticed that the year was off: 2012 instead of 2011. Wouldn't you expect a waiter at a fine-dining restaurant that seems to take so much pride in its wine to have noticed that? When it was pointed out he seemed a bit surprised (did he not remember the year at all?), took it back, then brought it back saying they were out of 2011s but "he told me the 2012 is the same". Alright, then. Later we noticed we were charged for two 2011s (but they're the same, right?). The wait service wasn't all terrible. Two people had asked him for recommendations and had split his suggestion; when he came by to bus the plates, he took a few minutes to get their feedback on how the recommendations at worked out. He gave the impression of really listening and caring how they had fared. A few dishes are prepared "at the table", providing a little spectacle. The two vegetarians at our table were nevertheless pretty underwhelmed by the food. It's pretty clear that Capriccio's doesn't really understand vegetarians at all, and if you have one in your party, I'd give this place a wide miss. Some of us got spumoni for dessert. For some reason they had drizzled a sweet syrup all over it. It's one thing to use syrup to decorate a *plate*; it's another thing entirely to decorate the main *dish*, thereby completely messing up its flavor. Did they think their spumoni couldn't stand up for itself without an indifferent sugar sauce being poured all over it? (It could, and it would have been better left alone.) Overall, there are lots of really great restaurants in Providence that cater to a variety of diets and tastes. Capriccio is a notch more expensive than most of them, without any appreciable improvement in quality (and a reduction, for some diets). What you're paying for is a very particular vibe: get dressed, sit in a dark space with a specific overwrought style, eat food that is loud and unsubtle, be served by formally-dressed glad-handling men, and consume lots of meat. If that's your thing, very few Providence restaurants can come close. If that's not your thing (and it's not mine), for half the cost you could have a vastly better meal and service and decor and overall experience at a dozen places in Providence. read more

The worst experience ever! We made a booking for a table. They said ok and never informed us of any cancellation charges during the time of the booking! My aunt for whom we had made the reservation fell sick and we had to cancel. It was unfortunate but the extremely rude manager made up and charged us a $300 cancellation fee!!! He was so rude, so adamant, and I've never had to deal with such an unpleasant person in my life! Please NEVER give them your credit card details or you'll be charged with insane fees like this. This is absolutely ridiculous!! We're not interested in eating at your restaurant so you charge us $300??? This is plain extortion!! They're thieves, liars, and cheats! read more

A NYE tradition, dinner at Capriccio's! We have been delighted by many dinners here and we always have a fantastic experience every time. The service is impeccable, our server even went the extra step & offered to take a picture of us after dinner near a holiday decorated area to remember our evening. I try to order something new even if it is just a special appetizer. Last night I treated myself to the Foie gras appetizer. It lived up to the hype. The 4 complex levels of each savory bite started my dinner off with extremely high expectations. Of course with every visit at least one person in our party will order the Flambe not only because the taste is out of this world but we look forward to seeing Enzo the flambe chef, he completes the night with his expertise and interesting table talk. He told us last night he had been Capriccio's flambe chef for 40 yrs! In a city that is filled with what seems to be trendy fine dinning establishments Capriccio's still stands out as a indulgent classic dinning experience. read more

This is my absolute favorite restaurant in the state. I have been coming here for years since I was a small child. My two favorite meals are the Veal Oscar and the Steak Diane, which is cooked table side. Atmosphere is great, very romantic and I would only suggest this restaurant is kid friendly if you have a very well behaved and well mannered child. Service was absolutely horrible. This used to be my mother's favorite restaurant but it's gone downhill. Arrived for dinner at 730 and didn't leave til nearly 11 as our waiter was no where to be seen for 45 minutes at a time. The place wasn't busy at all so who knows what he was doing. Not to mention the waiter thought he was being funny as he insulted my guests and I throughout the evening through his "witty" comments. Two stars because the food was decent. Three of us had fettuccini Alfredo which was liked mainly because they prepare it table side. Though they left my mother's plate on the serving table after it was prepared and never served it to her (my boyfriend got up and grabbed the plate for her while the two of us waited 5 minutes for our plates as the others food got cold). They brought a cake out to us as it was my Mother's birthday but at that point we just wanted the bill. Wish it was better but every one of us was grumpy from the lack of service by the end of the night. read more

Capriccio is definitely my favorite spot in Providence for northern Italian food. The entire experience every time that I have been (probably half a dozen before finally getting around to reviewing on yelp) has been fantastic from start to finish. You can not beat it for ambiance. The main dinning room is down a set of stairs in what looks like an old wine cellar. The initial impression of the restaurant the wait staff, tables, chairs, and place-settings ooze class and sophistication which befit the price tag. And although Capriccio's is expensive, around $20-$40 average per entree, it is worth it. The free valet parking and coat check are also nice touches. Capriccio also has one of the better wine lists that I have seen around Providence, with wines from around the world though I usually stick with my favorite northern Italian wines Barolo's, Chianti's, and Brunello's (it is a northern Italian restaurant after all)!!! Also, the bar area makes a very nice strong cocktail, mine being Bombay Sapphire and Tonic. They have a great variety on the menu of steaks, seafood, pasta, chicken, and veal options truly something for everyone's palate. My two favorite entrees are the Veal Osso Bucco and the Beef Wellington. The Wellington is fantastic and a must have considering Capriccio is one of the few places around that even serves it. Finally, I cannot say enough about the wait staff, they are always helpful whether in selecting the right wine or a quick question about the menu. The wait staff is so attentive that you practically take a sip from your wine or water glass and someone is immediately refiling them. I have never felt rushed, but is definitely like a restaurant in Italy, take your time and enjoy the whole experience. If you do that then you might not feel so bad when you get your bill!!! Dinning at Capriccio's is an experience. Although it is pricey it is justified with the quality of the food and service. Certainly not a place for everyday, but definitely worth it for a special occasion. read more

Ate there recently for lunch. There were some highs and lows w/food and service for all 4 of us. Calamari app.-amazing & tender! Chicken Paillard-very very bland and dry. Veal Parm-excellent & tender, All the salads- really lacked flavor. Clam app-Oily and bland. Service was attentive but odd. One example, asked about a dish on the menu, response was, " I have no idea how it is, havent had it in so many years ".......what was that??? With so many great places they need to step up their game w/the food, especially since the interior is fabulous, and its a great menu. They really should get a new set of eyes for some quality control and updated flavors because it seems they are resting on old laurels. read more

Everything was great EXCEPT the host. I believe his name was Jose. Albeit we had to change our reservation a few times as we had a very long drive, but we didnt realize the kitchen supposedly closed at 10. I mean it was friday night in Atlantic City for crying out loud! He literally said "come on guys..youre putting everyone out" as he escorted us to our table!! Lucky for us everything else from our wonderful waiters, servers, busboy were on point! They gave us a great experience. Maybe one of them should be the host! We were celebrating my boyfriend's 50th birthday. He was thrilled with the mussels that he got for an appetizer. I loved the antipasto that we shared. I got the butternut squash gnocchi & they were tasteless & dried out, very disappointed. My boyfriend got lobster pasta, which he loved. It was such a nice place, but we were completely ignored by our waiter Sal. He NEVER came over once to ask how everything was, until we were all done eating. He then asked if we would like anything else. I felt like saying how about some service? I was so upset, here we were celebrating a 50th Birthday and we were completely ignored. Shame on you Sal. Maybe you should at a chain restaurant? Just a thought. The woman at the coat check was the best worker in the place, along with the doorman. read more

To say we were disappointed is an understatement. My husband and I had such fond memories of a romantic, elegant dining experience only to be completely underwhelmed for what was noted to be a celebratory dinner. My niece and her husband arrived earlier than we did and were seated at a dingy table against the wall in the back to the left of the entrance. As it was a 5:15 reservation, there were plenty of open tables, however, this is where they chose to seat us for a wedding celebration. Our appetizers took a round of drinks and a bottle of wine before they arrived. I had asked for a dozen raw oysters on the larger side and our waitress said of course. The oysters were the smallest I have ever seen -- barely could be called oysters. The baked oysters and the baked clams were miniscule as well with just a bunch of bread crumbs on top. We should have sent them back, but we were starving and did not want to cause a problem as we were trying to celebrate our guests. The main meals -- the Lobster Cardinale was a pound of pasta with about 2oz of lobster tail. What a joke. The Steak Dianne was delicious, however it was not prepared table side as advertised. Instead, it was made in back of us so none could enjoy the experience of "Flambé." So why bother? The waitress informed my husband that they were out of the surf and turf so my husband substituted for the Ribeye which was very delicious, but not hot when served. The desserts were probably the best of our $675 meal, although, once again, table side Flambé crepes were made in back of us instead of table side which is the cornerstone of this restaurant. Another cornerstone of the past is dress code. This used to be a place where people dressed up. But sadly, even the maître looked like he could have been hosting at Applebee's. We might not have noticed as much if we were given an nice table and had the table side experience that we were paying for. My husband's comment was, "I guess you can never go back." Sadly, this once romantic restaurant is a tired establishment at best with mediocre food and high prices. Bad investment! read more

We went on Saturday for my birthday. It was water fire. Service was good. Valet which was great because of water fire. Food was outstanding. Everything we ordered from the soup, salad, specials and meals were all great. Best piece of filet I have had in RI. Caesar salad very good. Lobster bisque very good. Entrees all excellent. Came here for "date night" during a WaterFire. We had 9pm reservations, got there a bit early and had a cocktail at the bar. It was nice to go a little later in the evening as there was room at the bar and no wait for our table. He had the Saltimbocca alla Vincenzo which he claims was excellent - I wouldn't know because my Boeuf Wellington was so good I refused to try it and waste any valuable space on anything else. We split a cannoli for dessert, which was very nice, I had a delicious tawny port and he had a rusty nail. This place is great for taking your time and enjoying a nice dinner out. We never once felt rushed. The decor is a bit stuffy for a basement restaurant and the tuxedos do feel a bit over-the-top, specifically because many of the diners we saw were loud tourists wearing berkenstocks with socks. I had gone to Capriccio years ago and have never been back. My husband and I used to go there often to listen to jazz music downstairs and enjoy appetizers, etc. A few years later my husband surprised me with dinner there and later a show. I ordered a filet mignon. I ordered it medium rare. It was very well done. It was so awful I had to drown it in steak sauce just to eat the small amount I ate. A $50 piece of steak was ruined and I never went back. Too bad because I love great steak but sadly I have no desire to eat there again. read more
