If I was looking to whack someone or more likely have the GREATEST BEEF WELLINGTON I have ever had this is where I go. It has old school charm, a superb wait staff and the food is to die for. Long story short...went inside and my wife and I stood at the door for 5 mins. No hostess / about 5 waiters walked by without saying a word to us. I thought it was bingo night because most of the patrons were 60 plus. I have Nothing against older ones but the decor / and guest really emphasize out of date! We turned around...walked out! Valet guy was nice, but he was bewildered because he just parked my car. I told him what happened and he made mention he could get us a table. I respectfully declined and tipped him $5. This is my favorite restaurant. Period. While not a casual choice, when it's a special occasion, this has become the new go to. There is simply nothing bad on the menu. Everything is 5 star, including the service. From Raw Oysters, Escargot & Lump Crab to start to Beef Wellington, Tournadoes (twin filet in demi glace) and Beef Shortribs (on special last time we went) to stellar seafood dishes like the Lobster Americano and Capellini Cardinale, this place is THE SPOT. And while the flambe dishes aren't quite as amazing as some others, there's certainly a show with the tableside preparation and skyhigh flames licking the ceiling. Drinks are on-point and desserts are satisfying as well. Prices will certainly put a (big) dent in your wallet but it's well worth it for those special occasions - can't recommend this place enough. read more

I went here for restaurant week and ordered off the prix fixe menu. The prix pixe prices were an absolute steal compared with their usual prices, and their wine by the glass was actually only $9, which I thought was very reasonable. The food was good. But it wasn't better than, say, Loie Fuller, which is much less expensive than Capriccio. The arancini were actually delicious. The chicken was average, not bad but not delicious. The chocolate mousse was terrible. The atmosphere was extremely noisy. I think it's reasonable to expect some noise on a Saturday night, but there were a couple tables that were enjoying the liquor to the point of being unnecessarily noisy and raucous. This was perfectly welcomed by the staff, who actually seemed to encourage and enable it. If you want to be respected as an upscale fine-dining restaurant, that sort of behavior shouldn't be tolerated. Our waiter was nice, but in my opinion overly chatty and attentive. Whenever he came to check on us, we had to politely indulge a few minutes' worth of his jocularity and comments on various subjects. The host was rude. The valet wouldn't even give us the time of day when we tried to take the option of using the free valet parking, so after driving around the nearby streets a bit, we ended up paying for the lot across the street. The only truly positive part of the experience was spending a cheerful evening with my date. That made the night really special. But if I'd been depending on Capriccio alone for providing a good experience, I would have been extremely disappointed. read more

Took my wife out for her Birthday... We were going to a show after dinner. Bobby (our waiter) was incredible. Got all our food out in a timely but not rushed manner while still getting us out at the exact time I hoped for. We both orderd the Steak Dianne served table side that was so delicious we wished the next day we had left overs. Once again, you did it guys, 2 thumbs up to all the staff!!! Food was delicious but we visited during restaurant week and our waiter was beyond insulting. He went as far as to call us DOGS when paying our checks. We were still very generous with our tip due to excellent food. The manager could care less...He offered us a drink on the house. The manager mentioned that this waiter had treated other patrons the same. Will NEVER give this venue a penny of my hard earned money again and I hope you chose another venue to dine in that will be grateful for your business. Where to start. Ok. Parking. Very few options for self parking. Valet? Sure there's that. It was ok. Not great service there at all. Location? Corner lot. Not very picturesque but just fair. service? Lady at the top of the stairs takes your coat, broken english, few words (no big deal) but smile would be great. walk down a flight of stairs to enter the restaurant. Needless to say that YES feels alot like you're walking down into a finished basement. (because you really are) only it is elegant I won't deny them that. Smells great. Looks great. But crowded. Bussing,busy and you can barely walk by or in between tables and chairs well because it's super crowded for such a small floor space or maybe just bad layout. Either way it's annoying when someone smacks your head with their elbow. Now about the food? Price wise? Over priced for what you get in quality in serving size and in preparation. Ingredients I do think know but judging from its quality it may not be any better. Here's and example. My wife ordered an appetizer with a fancy name that I can't even remember and it turned out to be literally just plain ol fried mozzarella cheese.. seriously? $15.00 for fried cheese on a plate. Unacceptable. Dinner? She ordered chicken Alfredo $40.00 and it was delicious. They made it there right next to our table so it was fresh and hot and yummy. Problem was, it was absolutely no different than any other major franchise restaurant chicken Alfredo she'd ever had... same thing. No problem.... I ordered the filet mignon steak. $40.00 as well. Asked for it well done. No pink.. I got it cold, pink throughout the middle and burnt on the outside. No taste, no different than if my son burned a steak on our grill at home. Was the restaurant fancy? Yes. People eloquently dressed and behaved. Yes. Atmosphere conducive to a nice night out? Sure. But for the price and name and location and stature... I expected way more quality top of the line service... anything that would make it stand out... but it failed miserably. In the end. If you read this much... go elsewhere if you want to eat tasty flavorful food. This place did not live up to its hype. Put it this way. I've never given anyone a review. Horrible horrible horrible. We got there and our reservation was cancelled because we didn't call them back even though their voice message didn't say it would be cancelled if no call back. Food was just ok. After much arguing they finally found a table for us. Had veal parm but included no pasta which was very disappointing. I'd heard about Capriccio's growing up when the expression, "They went to Capriccios!" was seen as evidence of someone's debauched decadence. But last night was the first time I'd ever been and it was better than I expected. The food was standard Italian - no innovative hipster food here, but that's what you would expect. The ingredients were good and it was well executed. Where but RI do you get a side of pasta with your fish entree? The only quibble I have is that the tomato in the local tomato salad special was pretty flavorless, at least compared to the beauties coming out of my garden. Also, there are some pretty dire wines on the wine list and the markup on those bottles seems to be kind of high (i.e. $20 for a $7 wine). You might want to plan to spend a little more and get something drinkable. Overall, given the level of service and food quality, I would say that the prix fixe (correctly pronounced prixie fixie) menu is actually a fantastic value, not the evidence of profligate spending I was led to believe. So do go to Capriccios. But remember, ladies, the line between tacky and classy exists somewhere between faux cheetah and faux zebra. Try not to cross it. read more

My friend's and I were in Providence to see WaterFire so found this place randomly. Not really dressed for this venue but we're welcomed in anyway. Service was very attentive. Entrees were in $26-38 range so I went with, what I thought was, simple pasta dish. The Fettuccine Alfredo was to die for! One of staff made the Alfredo sauce right at the table. You can have chicken or shrimp added to it. It was so delicious and fresh. For dessert, raspberry sorbet was tart and 2 scoops was just enough. A great way to end meal. Wines were by the glass and bottle. Pinot Grigio was crisp, light. I would highly recommend this lovely Italian restaurant! I'd give it more stars if I could. read more

This most recent visit was the second within a months time. The first experience was absolutely incredible and couldn't have asked for a better dining experience. However the second visit was horrid. At the very first contact the maitre'd was kind of cold and seated us without even a hello. Unless "3" is restaurantese for hello. waiter was pleasant and accommodating and all was going well until it was time to have the main course cook tableside. The waiter was preparing the steak Diane and was about to serve it when along comes my friend the maitre'd and pulls the waiter away for 6 minutes....so now I'm saying WTF could be more important than my food which was being served. So now after this wait come the rest of the party's meals, beouf wellington, in which the dough on the inside was undercooked if not raw. It was not doughy due to the meat it was simply not cooked properly. Then the waiter decided to join the party and ask how everything was as he ran by and I found myself replying to empty air. I'm sure this is not common practice for this establishment but it has to go here since there is no way to give feedback on their website. I originally went here with my girlfriend to check out dinner for Providence Restaurant Week. Once we arrived we both decided that the regular menu was much more appetizing than what they were offering for the promotion. We started off with the Kobe Beef carpaccio along with the lobster bisque. The carpaccio was great. The shaved Parmigiano-Reggiano was delicious. The lobster bisque was also tasty, however when you get to the bottom of the bowl your stomach does realize that you just ate a pound of butter... She had the gnocchi and I had the pork chops. Her gnocchi was delicious and appeared to be homemade. I ordered my pork chops medium and then were definitely well done. A bit on the dry side actually. However, the portions were sized nicely and the accompanying mashed and asparagus were perfect. In addition to the drinks the tab was actually less than expected. The service was top notch. Not quite sure what other people were referring to when they said the service was snobbish. I found them courteous and professional. Overall the food was good. Went here for an anniversary before the water fires this summer. For timing, this was a good place to go on a water fire Saturday, provided you reserve a table. The food overall was pretty good, but I did expect more from the wait staff. A couple of times I was ignored, and one time he left in the middle of me asking something. The food was pretty good, and we got a nice free dessert. Overall, they do a great job, and I think we maybe just got a bit unlucky with a waiter serving (bigger tip) larger tables. read more

To start (and end) Carl the valet was tremendous. The wait for our appetizers was extremely long. The waitress kept apologizing saying "we have a lot of people in back. Your appetizers should be out soon". The place is full every Saturday night. Did they think that they would have less people at Christmas time? When the appetizers arrived they were SKIMPY especially the calamari - the absolute worst serving that I have ever seen at a restaurant. The Beef Wellington was very good as was the veal special. To substitute a veggie instead of potato cost me $8.50. UGH Drinks were good. Service was slow- we were seated at 6:00PM We left at 10:15PM. There are a lot of restaurants in Providence that would like the $500 that I dropped at Capriccio on Saturday night. I'll be trying some of them. read more

Honestly this place is overrated. I've had better service but it wasnt bad by any means. The food is okay it's not amazing. Cafe nuovo and hemenways are better. The environment is gorgeous honestly that was my favorite part. But that's a bad sign because shouldn't the food be? The wine is ridiculously expensive with no options under 100 dollars on the menu, you have to ask to get a middle ground Moscato that isn't like 60 dollars for 1 glass. Condé Nast reported that the Ocean House in Watch Hill is the best in New England. Well I was there today and had the beef carpaccio. It doesn't come close to coming even with Capriccio's. Seven of us had lunch and everyone compared it to Capriccio's. It doesn't hold a candle to them. And twice the price !!! As soon as you arrive at Capriccio's your greeted by Sal, who is the ultimate professional. Very warm and accommodating. The staff is just as good under his watchful eye. But the star of the show is definitely the food. My favorite is the beef carpaccio and the Dover sole. Don't count out the veal parmigiana it's amazing. Don't just go for special occasion. We usually choose to go to this restaurant for special occasions. The food has always been consistently delicious. The dining room and kitchen staff are very accommodating to your request. It has a great wine selection and relaxing atmosphere. The only opportunity I see is the dessert menu and presentation. We went this past Saturday night with a party of 8 to celebrate two Anniversaries. Upon pulling up to the valet area the valets acted like we were inconveniencing them. No greeting - the guy opened my door and waited for me to get out. Similar to how it went down upon leaving. Nobody even opened the door to the restaurant for us. Not a good way to treat clients at a 5 star restaurant. We walked down the stairs and were semi greeted by the Maitre D' who seemed preoccupied with something or other and remained that way throughout the evening as we observed him scowling and berating some servers. Our server Eli was excellent! Very knowledgeable about the menu, very attentive and just an overall excellent server. Everyone's meal was cooked perfectly and all the meals came out together which was impressive. Food portions were a decent size and I felt that the prices were really not that over the top considering that the restaurant is a 5 star dining experience. I would definitely go back but the Maitre D' should be more careful of his demeanor in front of patrons. And the valets should be more friendly and courteous. read more

This is by far one of my favorite Italian restaurants. The price is on the high side, so be ready to pay. However, it is worth every penny. The service is top-notch. Great place for a date or special occasion. Also, I good place to go with old friends and hang out in a relaxed, non-rushed environment. EVERYTHING on the menu is incredible. Osso Bucco USED to be my favorite, but they discontinued it. I am sure the desserts are great, but we never have room because the serving sizes are so large. I've always driven by this restaurant and wanted to try it. Fortunately I am part of a professional organization that gave myself and my colleagues a dinner presentation last night. Walking into the restaurant I was very surprised that it was in the basement! It seemed ok though the ambience seemed nice. The wait staff was excellent and very attentive. I was offered a drink as soon as I sat down but was disappointed that there was no wine list and that the poor waiter had to verbally tell me what types of wine they had. As this was a corporate type event we ordered off of a pre fixed menu. I ordered the calamari, veal sirloin, and chocolate mousse for dessert. The calamari was great and perfectly cooked. What really disappointed me about this meal was the main dish. My veal was over cooked and flavorless and the sauce that it was served with did nothing to help it. It was served with 3 sad roasted fingerling potatoes and some undercooked asparagus that I didn't eat. The chocolate mousse was good for dessert. Overall the whole meal was just ok. It may have been what I ordered? In any case I wouldn't go out of my way to visit this restaurant, especially when there are so many other Italian restaurants in Providence that are truly spectacular. read more

I guess its time to leave Urbanspoon and join Yelp like everyone else! Here goes. I haven't been to Capriccio's in a long time. We had a $100 gift certificate so decided to go this past Wednesday. It was nearly empty when we arrived at 6:30 (had booked through open table) and it remained dreadfully slow the whole evening. First the good news, the food! And really, that's what is all about. We ordered the special cheese app with some beets and prosciutto. It was tasty but nothing spectacular. I ordered the beef wellington and my girlfriend ordered the scallops and risotto. Both were delicious. The meat was cooked well and the wellington was accompanied with some flavorful potatoes. We ordered a nice bottle of Venetian wine and that was also fantastic. Too full for dessert. The ambiance of the place hasn't changed in years and is certainly not for everyone as it can seem a bit impersonal and stuffy. However, those things are non-issues for me. They still do some table side service, which can be a nice touch when going out for an expensive meal. One of the waiters cut my wellington into perfect portions. Our problem, was not with the service (per se) or the food. About 5 minutes after our wine was poured and before we ordered any food, the valet came to our table to inform us that our car had been hit in the parking lot. There was no major damage, but we were outside dealing with police and the other driver for 45 minutes or so. When we returned it was as if nothing happened, with our wine still on the table. I had informed our waiter of the situation before we had gone outside. Ok, so we eat and enjoy our dinner. Now recall, our car was hit in their lot after their valet parked my car. I really anticipated a comp of some sort. Nothing major, a free app, free dessert. Anything more would have been appreciated, but unnecessary. Nothing. No mention of it. We were totally put off by their lack of interest in our predicament. We never mentioned it again at dinner to our waiter. I guess being more vocal would have probably worked for us, but I would like to think that a situation like this would have garnered a little "old fashioned" customer service on their part. read more
