Came here for lunch and wasn't quite sure what to expect, but overall it just didn't hit for me. When I walked through the buffet line, a good number of the trays were empty and it took a while for staff to refill them with fresh food. It made the selection feel limited during my visit. In terms of taste, much of the food reminded me of standard cafeteria-style dishes -- filling, but nothing particularly memorable. I was also disappointed that seafood wasn't being served around the time I came (around 2:00 PM), especially since reviews suggest that's one of their stronger offerings. The restaurant itself appeared on the smaller side. The ambiance gave me more of a casual, neighborhood home town buffet vibe. Based on this experience, I'm not sure I'd return, but it may be worth trying during a busier service time when more items are fully stocked and seafood is available.

We came here today after leaving Sac County State Fair. Absolutely loved it!! Seafood hit the spot , prices are right, and staff is good. Good quality food at a buffet. My favorite was the mussels !

Very impressed by this Chinese buffet. The cost is about $28 per person, for full buffet enjoyment and drink, includes the tax. I went in hoping to like at least 50% of the items I tried, but I actually really enjoyed the majority of their buffet menu! It's not a huge buffet, but they have a lot of variety and the food is very flavorful. The items that stand out are the honey walnut shrimp, the green beans, the sushi with the cream cheese, the garlic shrimp, and I would say the hot sour soup! But there's a lot I didn't get to try (this is despite getting up a total of maybe 4 time to get more food). The restaurant itself was pretty busy, definitely a family-friendly vibe, I'd say the staff was friendly and quick to remove used plates from our tables. The only reason I give it a 4 instead of 5 is because the floor wasn't as clean as I think it should have been, I saw scraps of garbage and food in very visible areas but the employees didn't pick it up during my time there. This won't deter me from going again though :)

I came over on a Saturday at noon, and they weren't that busy. I was surprised. On the weekend, it's the dinner menu all day long, and it's about $27 and change after tax, which includes your drink, and that's not bad. They do offer a senior discount if you are over 65. It is a smaller buffet, but they did have lots of choices. They had a salad bar, a decent sized, dessert bar, a good sushi section, and a Mongolian BBQ/hibachi station. They had. American choices, such as french fries, fried chicken, pizza. And your normal Chinese choices like broccoli, beef, pepper, beef, etc.... They also have a few dim sum selections. I tried the siu mai, and it was OK, but nothing spectacular. They had three different soups. I tried the tamarind soup, but to me, it was a bit too sour. I know that that's the nature of tamarind, but I thought they would "zhuzh it up", to make it a little bit more savory. In fitting with the name of the restaurant, they had a lot of seafood. Fresh crab legs. Fried crab, "Crab" and cheese, which is actually a fish called surimi. You will often see it called " Krab." They had oysters on the half shell, and they had stuffed oysters. They had crawdads, And they even had snails! The snails were very good, but they were pretty spicy, and I wish they would've marked that the way they marked that the crawdads were spicy. I didn't go for the crawdads. They had baked salmon They had shrimp several ways, including peel and eat, fried shrimp, and coconut shrimp, which I absolutely love. Apparently the peel and eat shrimp and the fried shrimp were not deveined, I know that's not a big deal, I'm just not a fan of eating "shrimp poop." Overall, I thought it was a good meal. I would like to come back at lunchtime sometime, to see what the difference in the menu is. Lunchtime the price is less. Thanks.

It was a 10/10 for me! Now, this isn't The Bacchanal but it definitely hit the spot! I wanted a Chinese buffet and this was exactly what I needed. I thoroughly enjoyed the chilled snow crab legs. The meat was sweet and plump. The raw oysters were fresh and clean! Captain has a variety of Chinese dishes like the fried rice, chow mein, honey walnut shrimp and dim sum. 10/10 They had Japanese food like an array of sushi rolls, sashimi and baked giant oysters. Bomb! My other favorite dishes were the crawfish, fried blue crabs, fried salt & pepper shrimp and the corn. They also had sinigang soup for the Filipinos out there. All in all, I'd definitely come back again. They're very clean here and constantly wiping, cleaning and replenishing items.

The price was phenomenal! For my husband and I with drinks under $55 Lots of variety. The muscles were good Not a fan of trying to get crab out but honestly it taste great. Did you know they have a Mongolia bar as well. You can't add your sauces but be careful when asked if you want hot. Hubby said his was too spicy hot and he loves spicy. 4-5 You go right in get your seat. Quickly. Big establishment open floor plan. Options for kids etc. Did not like the crab cheese thing. I did not try the soups. Shrimp cooked was 5-5 Service 4-5 They didn't clear the table right away. I do believe they were busy in the back. Please take cash to leave a tip on table. They do have you sign credit card etc. Value wise etc. 4-5 super happy this place is here! Will be back

Closed in the middle of lunch

Looks like they are permanently closed and the front door sign says closed for remodeling and I seen no construction going on just empty parking lots front and back and it was in the middle of lunch

Celebrated my Uncle's birthday and he said he wanted to go to a buffet in town and of course I'm going to accommodate. Saw this place was new and just opened, taking over where Cracker and Barrel was. Upon entering the place was clean. Still brand new vibes. We paid and then sat down. The food was okay for the most part but it's a buffet so don't expect too much. Avoid the oysters at all cost. All in all, this was a good one time experience. I say come to the grand opening and find out for yourself.

    Dirty dishes being placed out..

If you've ever wondered what disappointment tastes like, Captain Buffet in Sacramento offers a full, all-you-can-eat serving. At first glance, the buffet looks promising -- a wide selection of dishes neatly lined up, almost convincing you that you're in for a treat. Then you actually taste the food. The sushi has a unique dryness that could only be achieved by hours of patient neglect, and the fried items somehow manage to be both soggy and overcooked at the same time -- an impressive feat, really. The hot dishes are lukewarm, which is perfect if you enjoy playing "Guess How Long This Has Been Sitting Here." Even the fried rice and lo mein, which are usually safe bets at buffets, were oddly bland, as if someone had gone out of their way to remove every trace of flavor. Dessert? Well, the cakes tasted like they came from a freezer, which I suppose they probably did. The fruit wasn't bad... if you didn't mind it looking tired. On the plus side, the staff was polite, though they seemed just as underwhelmed by the food as I was. For the price, I'd hoped for at least one dish worth going back for. Unfortunately, Captain Buffet will not be getting a second visit from me -- once was more than enough.

Took over the Cracker Barrel that used to be here. AYCE buffet that is Asian fusion. There's options such as sushi, hibachi, pizza, shrimp, and more. Pricing here is very reasonable. I came here during lunch but would come back for dinner to see the other options.

I really want to give this place a chance. I met up with some friends for dinner. You pay when you first get in. There is 5% service charge added to the check. The drinks are included. They have Pepsi but no coke. I opted for their unsweetened ice tea. This place seems to have a variety of food choices. I was trying to avoid the seafood just in case. They have sushi and a lot of staple Chinese dishes, coconut shrimp, Beijing beef, kung pao chicken, etc. Everything felt very salty to me. Surprisingly, their homemade pizza was good. The staff was nice, and I saw them restocking food and dishes. They have an ice cream freezer, which includes little cups of ice cream; some are fat free but not sugar free. Overall, probably not worth the dinner price. Lunch prices seems more fair.

    Flynn D.

Kind of annoyed. We came in at 11:30, the TV for the menu prices were NOT on. I paid 61.40 for two people and was kind of confused as online it says 23.99. AFTER i asked about it, she said "oh the prices are actually 26.99 theres nothing i can do about it." Then turned the tv on to show the prices. We sat down and ate anyways and it was okay. The rice, cheese muscles and egg drop soup were actually pretty good. Had a hard time opening the crab legs though. They were a bit over cooked:(

    Sheila C.

It's the old Cracker Barrel now it's the Buffett they have a large variety of good plenty of seating. To fix your own plate and find your own seat also you pay first. The only problem for me was the shrimp for the salad bar you had to peel and they weren't clean that's a no no for me but overall good place we will come back when in the Sacramento area.

Hot pot - You each get your own individual hot pot. There had a pretty good variety of broth flavors to choose from. There is a menu that you can order the meat from. There were 5 of us and we were told we can order 4 meats to share per round. There is a separate area for to grab a tray/bowl and choose your veggies. Great patients with the grandparents as they are less adventurous as they took time to explain the process as well as recommending a less "punch you in the face" broths for their individual hotpot. This buffet style was also cool in that all the individual proteins (pre-cooled/seasoned/fully cooked) were individually plated and in little half boxes . Diners take an empty lunch tray, gather what looks good for their liking and return to their table to cook and enjoy. Definitely much more "civilized" . Way better than large sections with multiple tongs encouraging the food savages. Another big plus is the wide selections. For those food influencers...it will be a long running camera shot just to capture the amount of different items. The challenge with this approach tho is that the plates and small food containers can stack up bery quickly and take over much of the real estate on the dining table top. But we were amazed at the team work of the staff to quickly make the needed elbow room. On a busy Saturday night tho, it definitely can still be a bit tricky. The value for the AYCE die hards are definitely there! There are solid options of meats fish and veg. But those fearing AYCE diners can also expect a certain level madness. We saw many unintentional dropping of trays of eager patrons. There were definitely ambitious customers that are stacking their trays sky high. Customers on our visit were generally very cordial to staff and on the couple of "tim.....berssss" we witnessed, the response time to clean up was really impressive! The AYCE masses are hard to please for sure, but it may make a difference to apply some general limit on the individual patrons trays? That may frustrate some hardcore diners but can enhance the experience of others. We will reiterate that the managing team is just doing such a bang up job in hiring a great crew! They all were hustling and we definitely noticed! WTG!!!

This buffet opened at 11:00am, and me and my friend arrived at 11:03am. The first thing I noticed…read morewas how spacious this place is: there is definitely enough room to accommodate large groups of people. The cost for one adult (as of July 2026) during Monday to Friday lunchtime, comes to $18.31 after tax, if only drinking water. $21.53 after tax if you order a drink/soda. I noticed a HUGE amount of cherries in the fruit section, so I went for those. The fifth or sixth cherry had white mold. I said "uh oh" and a nearby male presenting worker said "why, what's wrong?" so I showed them. They said "oh it's probably the cream". I put that cherry back, plus the ones I got initially. My plate was clean, so there is no mixed food contamination. Two workers went to the cherries and started going through it. What I'm wondering is how did "cream" get in the cherries and they haven't been opened for 10 minutes yet? And how did cream get on a cherry under a pile of cherries? The only other gross thing was the water. It was from the sink. Not filtered. If you've ever had Sacramento public water, you understand how atrocious it tastes. The rest of the food, was actually pretty good! Granted we arrived when they opened, but all the food was laid out/presented well. There are lots of chicken related dishes. I recommend the black pepper chicken. It's got a crunchy, almost candied exterior like Korean fried chicken.
