Service-apathetic. The waitress had no clue about the menu . Food-terrible. The "prime rib" panini was a cube steak. Facility-filthy. From the floors, to the walls, from the tables and chairs to the bathrooms. Beer selection-very good. The owners of this restaurant are very lucky that they are in a very small tourist town with very few restaurant options and are on the water with a great view. I've been to Captain Jack's three times, and I have mixed feelings about the place. On the positive side, the waitresses have always been polite and friendly, and I'm happy that the restaurant offers a vegan Beyond burger (though the gluten-free bun is dry, and $12.59 seems a bit steep). My wife enjoys the beer selection, and I like the fact that the bar offers non-alcoholic beer. But... there's something off-putting about the place. The owners feel the need to post scary-looking signs everywhere. There's a giant sign behind the bar about proofing everyone. The salad bar has a large sign warning you that you are prohibited from taking salad dressing for your chicken wings. The menus warn you about a surcharge for paying with a credit card (is that even legal?). Another Yelp reviewer posted something about a notice saying that Captain Jack's will not allow splitting checks. I myself didn't see this sign, so maybe they did away with it. Is this kind of stuff really necessary? 99.9% of their customers wouldn't dream about using fake ID or stealing salad dressing from the salad bar, and the net result is to make honest citizens feel like they're being accused of something. And, in any case, what's the big deal about taking some salad dressing for your chicken wings? I say, let 'em take the dressing. A small cup of it will cost a few pennies, and maybe the customers will be more likely to return (and promote the business to their friends) if the extra salad dressing created a better dining experience. Seems like it's penny wise and dollar foolish to scare people. With regard to the surcharge for credit cards: This just seems ridiculous. I myself own a retail establishment, and I wouldn't dream about discouraging the use of credit cards. I'll gladly eat the small processing fee if it gets more people in the door. I wonder what Visa, MasterCard, and AmEx think about this practice. Anyway, I'll probably end up returning to Captain Jack's, if only because my wife likes the place more than I do. But I wish that the owners would stop scolding people and instead promote the type of atmosphere that leaves you with a farm, fuzzy feeling when you're done eating. read more

We were disappointed when we went to celebrate my husband's birthday. They offered one dozen wings, not a wing for each year he's celebrating as they used to. Poor treatment of Veterans and service dogs. On July 4th, 2024 (Independence Day), my Service Dog, wife and I made the drive from Canandaigua to Sodus Point to specifically go to Captain Jack's for lunch, as I get to pick out place to dine on military holidays. Upon entering the restaurant I was told by the hostess and another employee that they don't allow pets of any kind. We notified them that my dog ids not a pet but my service dog (which by the way, he was wearing his service vest that states "Clearpath For Veterans Service Dog"). after they both take a second look at my service dog, they state that it doesn't matter. We continued to remind them that it's a law to allow service dogs in all facilities that allow the public to enter, to which they replied "yes we know but it doesn't matter", and we could speak with the owner if we want. At this point my wife and I were so fluster that my dog felt the frustration and anger and led me out of the restaurant. After goin g to eat at the next door restaurant Six50 On The Bay we called Captain Jack's from the near by park to talk to the owner. However, they told us the owner w as no longer there and w then we asked for the manager they told us the manager was busy but that their policy is to not allow any animals inside because the Health Department told them they have an open kitchen. Anyone with common sense knows that the Health Department would have told them of accommodation needed to allow service animals since it's the law, such as allowing us to walk around the side entrance to go to the outdoor deck as other restaurants with the same open kitchen circumstance have done in the past. They have not only lost a revisiting customer but a community of veterans with disabilities and a community with service animals. read more

I ordered a cup of the highly recommended lobster bisque it was a little salty and I really did not get one single piece of lobster in it it was white fish and the cup was smaller than a coffee cup I also ordered the equivalent to A French dip sandwich they described it as drenched in delicious Au Jus, but it was dry and the meat over cooked- but good. still I had to ask for more Au Jus. It wasn't the best I've had. my husband ordered Broiled fish platter it was haddock, and he was happy with his meal. read more

Captain Jack's is one of the only places in Sodus Point that is busy year round. The draw for my family on the recent visit was the birthday wing promotion. You get as many free wings as you are old, so my 61 year old Dad was pumped for a wing feast. While this wasn't the best experience, it wasn't the worst either, so I'll go with a pro and con approach here. The pros: The food was very good. We had a bunch of appetizers and a pizza along with the wings. My brother had a wrap that he enjoyed. I tried the pizza and the soft pretzels, both were very good. The pizza was a bit overcooked on the very edge, but otherwise very cheesy with a tasty sauce. We ordered 1/2 sausage which other members of my party enjoyed. The food came out quickly and were were able to get a table right away (with a reservation) even tough we had a big party. The cons: The only option for salad is a salad bar, which did not look very fresh so we skipped it. We got a side of veggies which was tiny and definitely frozen. We asked for some side plates and got a stack of paper baskets, and had to ask again for real plates. The worst part of the visit was the bar service. My Dad and I both ordered a rye Old Fashioned. When it came out there was a sprinkling of sugar on the bottom of the glass and a cherry that wasn't muddled topped with rye and no hint of bitters. I like Rye, so I didn't sweat it too much, but it was far from an Old Fashioned. We also ordered two pictures of beer, one of Bud Light which came out fine, and one of Founder's All Day, which was solidly half foam- meaning we paid for at least a full beer we did not get. On another visit this summer we waited uncomfortably long to even get service at the bar. From what I can tell the bar is really the issue here, but the raw material is there. They have good beer choices and a good selection of whiskey. Good bartenders or a bar manager could easily fix this. read more

I visited Captain Jack's once, by myself on a winter's day when out driving for fun near Sodus to see what lay out in that direction. Since I'm relatively unfamiliar with the area (and was told by a patron of Captain Jack's that it's nice in the summer), I cannot claim knowledge of how fun Captain Jack's might be on a nice June day, sitting out on the deck with a drink and a lot of other people present. As it is, I had a good experience. The bartender was very busy serving a substantial Sunday afternoon crowd, and my order of a garden burger and sweet potato fries took a while to arrive (I was very hungry so maybe I was just oversensitive). The patrons of the bar were generally friendly, and the interior ambience was good, a typical waterfront T-shirts on the walls kind of a place where people can relax and have a few drinks. My four-star rating is due to the high prices of the food... a fairly small garden burger with garnishes, that wasn't anything special, came to about $14. That, plus the sweet potato fries and an Embark hard cider, came to about $28 after tax. It seemed overpriced based on what I was getting, and the fact that the place is relatively big and could ostensibly benefit from economies of scale. But, overall, it was still a good experience and I would recommend it as a place for people to go if you are in the area. It definitely seems primarily like a place "for the locals," but it has something to offer for people looking for a place to relax on an afternoon day trip. Plus, their draft cider selection (Embark and Angry Orchard) is regionally appropriate and on-point! read more

We went with friends on a Wednesday night that happened to be trivia night. We went early to avoid the crowds and the wait, and because we had a bit of a time crunch; reservations were not accepted that night, if you had fewer than 10 in your party. We waited about ten minutes to be seated, though there was no one else waiting ahead of us. I wouldn't describe the hostess as warm or friendly. We were seated outside, which was our preference. Our waitperson was very warm, and attentive. However, food service was quite slow. The table next to us got anxious; our server apologized for delay. It was maybe 30 - 40 minutes before we got our salads. Then dinners came out a couple of minutes after salad. I had the broiled scallops, which were very good. My spouse had pulled pork and reported it as dry, bleh for taste, and cold. Her sweet potato fries were really cold. She said the cold slaw was best part of the meal. One guest had deep fried cauliflower, which was pretty good. The other had broiled haddock, which was "ok." We didn't have great expectations going in (we've been there before with mixed results), but it would have been nice to be pleasantly surprised. The price is fairly reasonable for what you get. We stopped by for lunch and asked for an inside table. We had to wait about 45 minutes for a table. The restaurant was not air-conditioned and was extremely hot inside; there were no fans either. The food was mediocre at best; one of us had the BLT and there was very little bacon on it. Been here a few times. Every time it seems to be going down service and food wise. We had a group of 12 go in. They only had 1 waitress for the entire room. The bus boy never came to clean off 2 other tables. Now the food. First off mr manager or owner. Are you serious charging $10 for salad!!? Or $4 for an ice cream scoop of Mac salad that was gross. Captain Jack's... a Sodus Point staple. They have an outdoor Tiki bar area upstairs for a more casual experience and an area downstairs if you want something more low key. We made our way upstairs and we were seated right away. I was really excited to see that they had a vegan Impossible burger. (And the option of a gluten free bun which caters GF) They also had a great selection of beers. The restaurant also offers a discount for cash payment. Unfortunately because of the lake flooding there was a pump that was transferring water that happened to be under the Tiki seating area. We could smell some of the fumes which was unpleasant at times. That being said - this restaurant is doing a great job dealing with the flooding. Captain Jack's is right on the water so it's a great place to go for dinner or drinks after hanging out on the beach. We'll be back again for the food, view, and friendly service. read more

I take my grandmother every time I come home to NY to this restaurant. It started because they serve fish fry on nights other than Friday and we keep coming back for the scenery and great food. Recently threw a surprise 80th birthday party for my grandmother. They were great accommodating over 20 people in their back room. We had plenty of room to socialize and move about. Our server Mason was awesome! I would totally ask for him again next time we go. He had to large parties on his own (probably too many people) but he managed to provide service with a smile. We took a long drive and went to the first place we could find that we could get a beer and some lunch. We sat upstairs with a great view of Sodus Bay and Chimney Bluffs. The pretty bartender was very nice and attentive and we enjoyed a delicious lobster salad flatbread. They were responsible and followed all pandemic protocols. I ended up coming here twice in 3 days for two different experiences. The first night was for partying. The bartender was really good and attentive. We hung out on the back deck and listened to the band. I would have liked to go up to the tiki bar where the band was playing but the rest of the group I was with wanted to chill on the deck. The second visit was for lunch with my family. Service, again, was excellent. However, the food was a disappointment. I ordered a bowl of the lobster bisque and although the flavor was great, it was served room temperature. Three others in our party had the same experience. Same with the clams they ordered. I had the battered haddock and it was good and served hot. My fries, on the other hand, were room temperature. We also ordered sweet potato fries for the table and they were room temperature as well. I went here with my family for lunch. I got their version of beef on wick and it was old dry meat and the hardest roll. When I tried to cut it in half it sounded like I was sawing wood. My kids said the school makes better burgers. I don't know how they made the food so fast and it all came out cold. I would not suggest or go back to this place. read more

Party of 7 of us came in with reservations in January 2024 for the birthday wings and for the expected anticipation of the usually warm atmosphere of the two gas fireplaces that we had experienced for many years. We ordered the birthday wings and I ordered an additional Baby Fish menu item with 2 sides. After about 5 minutes of being seated I had notice that the place was almost as cold as it was outside, around 42 degrees. Everyone around us was eating with there hats, coats, and gloves on. I asked the waitress to turn on the gas fireplace where we were seated in the back away from the bar in which has a fireplace. The waitress said that the fireplace is broken and that she was freezing too. So I walked to the other end of the restauarant in which also has a fireplace to see if that one was on, and it was also off. Two fireplaces would not be broken. The owner has apparently decided to get cheap and not spend money for additonal natural gas heat. This was a Wednesday, so if it were truly broken where is service to fix it? Two fireplaces would not be broken at the same time. So freezing ruined the experience. We had two small children. If we had not driven 2 hours to get here we would of left. The wings were perfect. However the Baby fish apparently was old product because it had an after taste like dirt. I didn't say anything as for the first half of the fish tasted normal and then as I bit into the other half it was inedible. So, I ate the 2 sides which were acceptable. I will never be back due to a freezing atmosphere without the fireplace. If it hadn't been for that I would of came back and just never order fish again. Apparently the owner thinks that this place will just keep running on its own. Just look at the peeling paint on the exterior. But on the contrary eventually this place will be a boarded up hole in the wall just like every other restaurant has become in this town. I have experienced freezing at the Olive Garden and Jersey Mikes as restaurants are trying to save money. Also, stay away from Rudys in Oswego. Garbage tasting smelt and clamstrips and bite sized small portions of food that barely line the bottom of the paper dish. Save your money people. I will stay and cook right at home from now on. I can cook my own chicken wings and fresh aldi fish in my new air fryer and sit next to my own ambient heat from my pellet stove. If you do want to go somewhere go to Mr. Mikes in Fulton NY on the Lake on Route 3. Good prices and large portions of fresh seafood. On one more important note, on the door says "No dogs no exceptions! I see other reviews here that people were thrown out and not served when coming in with a Service Animal. This is against NYS Law. If this happens to you call 911and have the police file a report. Then go home and file a complaint with Fair Housing in Syracuse, N.Y., your local ADA, the Health Department in Wayne County, and the NYS Attorney General's Office, and hit this joint with a fine that hits them right in the pocketbook. The food and service was beyond great and my family and I had no trouble choosing our meals, due to the vast array of items to choose from on the menu. Love the location! On the water, live music, outdoor tiki bar. This place has a cool theme in side pirates and a mermaid on the ceiling?! Love it! They have a killer craft beer selection and yeah domestic as well. And the food? Well we had chicken wings to start, crispy and sauced up! It kills me how some places "skimp" on the sauce! Not here! Good wings! The Philly was great, fresh hoagie roll and the taste is spot on! No condiments required to eat one here. Came in tonight for my birthday. Wanted to sit at the bar and there weren't three seats available. A few people moved down for us so me and my group could sit together. Our bartender was great (even got jd Fire out from their liquor cabinet and kept it Out of the cooler so it wasn't chilled, just the way I like it). NPH was great. The people i sat next to were even better because they were super Knowledgeable about the beer on tap. What great service. Which i think either makes or breaks you. Thank you, guys. Terrible experience again tonight. The special was prime rib and it was cold, over cooked and paper thin when it came out. The mashed potatoes were also cold. Our food looked like it sat in the window for a bit. Many things on the menu are falsely represented, like the "lobster flat bread." When asking about it, I was told it was "imitation" not real lobster. Same with the bisque--it seems like it has some real lobster in it, but also had imitation crab/lobster in it. This would be a major issue if someone didn't ask and were allergic to certain fish products. A few weeks ago, we came and the fried shrimp were not as described in the menu. We probably will not be back. Prices have gone up, food quality has decreased and now they charge an extra 3.9% if you use a credit card. read more

We used to go here a lot, but it has gotten progressively worse in the past couple of years. The food has always been just so-so, about what you'd expect for this kind of place. The service used to be good, though, and since there aren't many choices in Sodus Point, that helped make up for the meh food. Management doesn't seem to care about what seems to be a major problem in the kitchen, and the servers are left in a bad spot. I went here for my Bachelorette party. We had a blast- the atmosphere was so fun and lighthearted. The staff went above and beyond to make sure we had an amazing night. Kyle the bartender was so sweet to all of my friends, and made sure we were taken care of. I've made 2 trips here and will include both so you understand the star rating. First trip was a fall bike ride on my birthday, very limited options on the bay in September so ended up here, fairly busy afternoon and outside patio was full so ended up at the bar near the window. Service a little slow but expected because outside so busy, got a beer and a menu but didn't see anything that caught my attention so when bartender came back and I passed on ordering food you'd have thought I'd hurled some kind of insult, can you say attitude? Never was able to get a second beer, ended up leaving enough to pay for first one and left for place next door that wasn't serving alcohol but the crew was friendly and the food good. Second trip middle of January was in area for something else and decided on second chance, totally different experience same bartender (I think?) again ordered a beer and a menu chatted with a few people at the bar about the food, I narrowed my choice to 2 in case the first wasn't available luckily it was. Love a fish sandwich so that's what I went for as it doesn't have to be Friday to get it here, gave me 3 cooking options which caught me by surprise, excellent sandwich and had it with house made mac salad that was average but did the job.
