We got there at 3:30 for the extra $5 off per person. Well worth it!! Since we were there at opening time, everything was fresh! Homemade desserts, fresh sides, awesome meat and crab legs and nothing picked over yet! I'm a prime rib connoisseur and theirs is very tasty! We enjoyed our experience there. I decided to go to Captain Jacks tonight because it was so great the other time I ate there last year. I got a variety of things and the only thing I ate was some crab legs and salad. The rest tasted awful. The cook even said he does not get the seafood fresh. It's frozen. How can you be right at the coast and not get fresh seafood? Was my first time here and will not be back. The cold shrimp for shrimp cocktail still had all the shell on it which makes for a lot of extra time and effort. Plus the Shell was very soft which leads me to believe it wasn't very fresh. The crab legs were ok but again the shell was extremely soft so it made it hard to crack to get the meat out. Service was pretty slow at times. Only got one refill out of the entire time I was there. On positive was the German chocolate cake which is my favorite type of cake. At $35 a person I would have expected higher quality. I am not opposed to paying that given the crab legs but if I could have done it over again I would have spent my $145 for a family of 4 somewhere else. We wanted to try a different seafood buffet because we always go to The Original Benjamin's or The Giant Crab. Those are great buffets and well worth the price. This buffet is not good. The only thing that was even a little bit enjoyable to eat was the watermelon. The crab legs are extremely over cooked. The oysters and mussels are over steamed and the other food was just not good. Upon arrival I was almost hit by another driver and I wish they did hit me. This way I would have never stepped foot into this seafood Golden Carol. The shrimp tastes like pure rubber and I nearly shipped my tooth biting into a fried oyster. The atmosphere reminded me of a China Buffet. One of the worse buffets I have ever been to. Everything, even the soda tasted bad. The selection wasn't the greatest, the only thing that I found to be decent was the stuffed lobster tail and it was kinda old. My child hated the macaroni, spit it out and said "ewww it taste bad". The salad bar had flies everywhere, the vegetables didn't seem fresh but more like it had been sitting there all day. If your objective is to eat a ton of seafood of a wide variety, you might find this to be a good value. They had the most complete, broadest selection of seafood I can remember seeing all of which was wholesome and appetizing. We did not however feel that the quality was outstanding - this is not to say it wasn't perfectly acceptable though. I thought the crab legs were great but the mussels not so. The fried items left a little to be desired as they might when served from a buffer rather than straight-to-the-plate. The deserts were quite nice and there was a good variety to choose from. This was our first time visiting. We were the first ones in the restaurant since we showed up for lunch right at opening. We were seated right away and our server James was awesome. Very friendly and on top of our drinks. Everything was absolutely delicious. Get the coconut shrimp and crab legs. Sweet tea was great as well. My wife was impressed with the locally made hand soap and wanted some for herself which of course was for sale in the gift shop. Great marketing there. My husband and two daughters had dinner here last night. We weren't given the buffet prices in advance. The seafood was dry and cold. There was a large variety of anything fried section, which I do not trust. My daughters ate a piece of pepperoni and cheese pizza and chocolate covered strawberries. My husband had three soggy bbq wings. I sampled the oysters Rockefeller and crab legs which were by no means large enough to eat. Our bill was $135. If the price was anywhere near appropriate for the quality of food served, I would understand, but the food is quite honestly terrible and the prices are offensively high!! I went with 3 adults, myself included, and an 8 year old who barely ate and we paid $120. That's right $30 per adult and they ONLY charged my son $20 because "they saw he didn't eat much." The "hush puppies" were horrendous. The food was horrible and I also overheard an entire family leaving because the food was that bad. Do yourself a favor and stay FAR FAR AWAY!! Arriving at Captain Jack's, I took the time to go around the buffet line and take a morsel of each of the seafood entrees. The selection is quite expansive, including everything from salmon to grouper to flounder to mahi mahi. The disappointing thing such a large quantity is that the quality surely suffers. It seemed about half of the fish options were fried, which seemed like a cop-out to actually cooking it. The majority were also chewy and/or too salty, probably because they sit in the silver serving platters for hours on end. Although the blackened tuna and fried flounder were good, I didn't find anything I fell in love with--even the prime rib or crab legs at the carving station. Otherwise, there is a good selection of sides which were prepared well enough, and the dessert section was similar. Our waitress was kind and attentive, and we were seated quickly even with 7 in the party. At a price point of $20 this would be solid 3 stars, but as it stands, $30 is too much to pay for poorly prepared food. read more
