When we went to the Captain's Diner for Mother's Day, we didn't know what to expect. Where we planned to go was closing much to our disappointment. Time to go to Plan B. As we go out of the car, we saw two parties leaving with LOTS to go boxes. Good or bad sign? We were seated promptly and seen to immediately. I saw lots on the menu that I would like to try, however my wife and I are at the age where we share a plate. Didn't matter because we were able decide on the catfish plate right away. We shared a salad, subbed onion rings and sweet potato fries, and had some really good rolls. The salad was huge and very fresh. The onion rings were light and thin. Sweet potato fries always beat French fries. The catfish portion was unbelievable. Six large fillets. They were fried to perfection. Crisp and hot. All throughout our meal our waiter saw to it we were taken care of. He was one of the best waiters we have had, period. The Captains Diner was neat and clean. I like the old photos from our area. Everyone we dealt with were polite and attentive. After we were served, I realized why we saw people leaving with the to go boxes. We made two more meals out of them at home. read more

This place was slammed tonight, so we were definitely willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. It's hard to have a constant stream of customers. This restaurant has so many 5 star reviews I'm surprised at how bad our experience was. Someone lost the waitlist so they came outside and asked the customers to recreate it.. We had already left another restaurant because the wait was going to be close to an hour so we stayed. The food was awful. The only one who ate much was our teenager because he's always hungry. Both fish dishes were overcooked and the flounder that was I read a great review for was topped with tasteless shrimp, a too thick sauce and no crab. Very new pretty place, waitstaff very helpful and friendly. Menu has sandwiches, salads, steaks and seafood with a Greek influence. My lunch companion and I ordered the turkey/cranberry sandwich with zucchini (veg of the day) and the cheeseburger with onion rings. The turkey sandwich is unusual but good with lots of meat and cheese, but the zucchini was almost raw and cold. The burger was ok, had a good charcoal flavor but the meat was very dry. The onion rings are a huge portion (enough for a crowd) and sliced very thin. Alas they were pretty tasteless with no seasoning. Our waitperson Shawna was terrific. This place deserves their rating unlike some other places we tried on the island. The food was fresh and delicious. They make several of their sauces and ingredients from scratch which we appreciate and it comes through in the flavors. Homemade ranch was delicious. We ordered stuff flounder (really good-recommended by the server), ABC chicken sandwich (delicious and generous on the avocado and proteins), Alfredo chicken, salmon, and potato skins. Everything was really good and our server Leticia who goes by "T" was amazing. She was attentive, had a great personality, and impeccable memory. She was busy with multiple tables and still remembered something easy to forget like a side of ranch to go. She is ON IT. She was knowledgeable about the menu as well. Lastly, it was clean and seemed recently renovated or updated. The decor matches throughout and stays true to their theme. We would go back if we returned to this area in particular. My family of 6 had a lovely dinner here. It was super busy, spring break crowd, but the service was still amazing. Our waitress Zoe was aslo fantastic. We had 2 apps, stuffed mushrooms and calamari both delish. Three of us had the surf and turf. It was great. Steak cooked perfectly and shrimp so good. My husband had the Nueces bay flounder, also very good. My son had the ribeye. Nicely cooked as ordered and tender. My other son had coconut shrimp.
