While captain Tom's has been around forever, this is my first time visiting. They have daily specials for $12. I got the Alaskan white fish with fries Cole slaw and hush puppies. What a deal! The fries came out cold but the promptly brought fresh ones. The fish was well seasoned and soft. The staff is family friendly. I would 100% recommend. read more

So, the phone definitely didn't eat first this time. We enjoyed two Admirals feasts which included flounder, shrimp, scallops oysters and deviled crab (which I never eat) with no substitutions. Also came with hush puppies slaw and potato of your choice. I skipped breakfast to enjoy this late lunch early dinner and still had enough for another meal. We got most of it cooked salt and pepper style and it was really good. Glad to finally have a chance to visit here after a long while. read more

I took my husband here tonight for his first visit ever! We normally frequent a seafood location in High Point, however, I was getting more disappointed with each visit and needed a change. I love the options here! Seafood comes in different ways, paired with different proteins, and a nice selection of sides. The decor is rustic, but so is the building and the business and it's very fitting! The service tonight was great, as usual! I tried the shrimp and grits this visit and I was blown away! Such a delicious combination of flavors! My husband got the small popcorn shrimp with fries. He was impressed with the amount of food! His only complaint was that they did not have crinkle fries, but he enjoys his meal nonetheless! A nice change to our usual Sunday seafood dinner! read more

It had been awhile since I'd visited this very good Southern style seafood restaurant, an institution in Kernersville since 1972. We both had a lunch special - Popcorn Shrimp and Flounder for $9.99, which comes with slaw, hush puppies, was and 1 side. This is a lot of food, and remains a nice value meal, especially in the current market place. And this is true even though the size of the special has shrunk - there was a single piece of fish where there used to be 3! This was the worse catfish I've had in many years. If I would have known that it wasn't fresh but frozen I would have not wasted my money here. My ranch dressing was spilled all over in the inside of the bag, so no dressing for my salad. I have no idea what kind of frozen hush puppies they gave me, but they taste like paper. It's just HORRIBLE!!!!! I would not recommend this place to anyone who wants real fresh seafood. read more

I'm a country girl and a sucker for catfish. Let's just say Captain Tom's does some great fried catfish and they don't skimp on portions. I usually order a small fried catfish plate. It has 2 large pieces of catfish and then you get to choose 2 sides and it's served with hush puppies. They are always busy but I've never had to wait long to be seated. I've never had a bad server. Last week I ordered my usual with a baked potato and upon unwrapping it I found the potato was bad. They did nothing to the potato it was just a bad one. I asked my server for a replacement and she was more than happy to fix the issue and I had a new potato within mins. It can get a little noisy but that's because everyone is conversing and enjoying their food. All in all a great place to grab a bite. read more

Went into eat this evening & give them another chance. They blew it...when being sat by the rude hostess, we saw there was an empty booth beside the table we were sat at & asked to be sat instead at the booth...she said, "it was not available". Then immediately sat a family in the booth. Needless to say, we left immediately. We will NEVER be back there. read more

Been eating her for about 7 years great food!! Friendly staff, just last week and week before getting to many fish scales in my mouth. Maybe there's a new cook and not aware of how to scale the fish mouth full of scales have anyone else had this problem ? Other than that ever is great . Please I like to return! I visited with a group of 20. The ambiance is nice, typical for seafood restaurants. The service was fair, considering the group size. My fish tacos were not good, although the base white fish and popcorn shrimp were good. My wife's flounder had an off taste. Many in our group really enjoyed their meals. When it comes to fried or broiled seafood, Captain Tom's is as good as it gets in this area. Don't believe me? Ask the crowds who appear on Friday and Saturday nights, or the customers lined up in their drive thru. I won't claim that this is the freshest seafood you'll ever find, nor is it the most inventive menu. Remember: you're in the Carolina Piedmont. It's not like the ocean is just outside the window. But what you'll find here is traditional Southern seafood plates and platters. The food is plentiful, predictable, reliable, and worth what you pay for it. I love fried flounder and it's really good here. Not happy about the tartar sauce being a table condiment. I went to the bathroom to wash my hands after getting some because I have no idea who touched the bottle last and it felt greasy. Our server was incredibly slow. I waited 10 minutes for my water. After the food was served by a cook, the server came back a few minutes later to check on us; I asked for extra napkins and waited 5 minutes before going to the bathroom and getting paper towels on my own. It never fails, the napkins were on the table once I got back. If I do order from this place again, it will be for take out. read more

I'd only been to Captain Tom's once before, a few years ago and remembered liking it. I was in the area so stopped for lunch. The interior is more than a little dated and although there are many windows in the front of the dining room, all the blinds were tightly closed so it was a bit dark. Atmosphere aside, the service and food were good. My server seemed to be in a bad mood so I killer her with kindness and chat and it worked, she perked right up! She brought my food and my check, that's it. Never checked on me but I didn't need anything during my meal so not a big deal. I ordered the small scallop and jumbo shrimp platter that comes with puppies. I chose fried okra and slaw as my sides. The seafood was cooked well and tasted fresh. The sides were ok, nothing stood out but tasted pretty good. I really liked the tartar and cocktail sauces on the table. It was fairly busy for lunch on a Wednesday so it appears to be a popular lunch option in the area. I would go back if I'm in the area and in the mood for fried seafood. read more

Worst seafood dinner my wife and I ever had. She had fried flounder that was hard as a rock. It also had bones in it. She couldn't even eat it. I had broiled stuffed flounder. The flounder was totally dried out. The crabmeat stuffing was just a lump of breading on top of the flounder. It was tasteless. The clam chowder was OK. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. Food was average at best, although, it was the least expensive I have recently experienced.. Shrimp was not firm. Cocktail sauce was too mild. Tarter sauce had little taste. Fried flounder had a weak flavor, from either poor breading, lack of spices, or poor quality fish. Servers were all young and not very well trained. On Google News, they state they " are the best seafood restaurant in NC". That is a fabrication. They aren't even the best restaurant on NC hiway 66 in Kernersville, NC. read more

For our lunchtime visit, my wife and I split a fried pickles app followed by a jalapeno burger (with sweet potato fries) and a Nashville chicken sandwich (with chips), respectively. Admittedly, the fried pickles didn't make for a very attractive-looking plate. Instead of golden brown pickle chips, there were thicker, lightly battered slices. However, they tasted just fine and paired well with a zesty dipping sauce. Speaking of zesty sauces, the chicken sandwich had it aplenty, and it made for a satisfyingly messy bite. The chips were homemade and rated above average. Unfortunately, Sixty Six overcooks its meats. Under all the sauce, the chicken itself was a bit dry. My wife ordered her burger medium well and received it well beyond well done. As with the chicken, it was still flavorful despite the doneness issues. On food alone, Sixty Six isn't a strong draw, but factor convenience and versatility into the mix, and it becomes a solid lunch option.

The veggie burger was about the same quality as the frozen Morningstar patties I buy at the store. Also the Mac and cheese was box mix quality. She may also leave her review, so I don't want to go into it in detail, but I was very pleasantly surprised and impressed as to how hard our server worked to try to make it right.
