What an absolute lovely spot! We went for a friends birthday celebration and had the best time. Everyone is so kind and helpful! My husband surprised me with this gem for my birthday! We live in LA and love fine dining. We were excited to try this place and I highly recommend you check it out for yourself . We were greeted by Jessica and Natalie was our server. Natalie made sure to answer all our questions about the menu. She talked to us about the history of the restaurant as I loved the decor. The clam chowder is excellent , the scallops serving was huge and delicious ,and the lobster was so big I couldn't finish it. I had an espresso martini which Natalie tweeked the ingredients for my liking. The strawberry cheesecake was also delicious. Overall this place is Old Hollywood with amazing service and delicious food. Thank you so much Natalie and Jessica for the amazing experience. We will definitely be coming back soon. Just a start, I am a resident of Big Bear. Captain's Anchorage is the nicest restaurant to go to on the mountain. If I want the best prime rib this is where I go. They also have the best clam chowder on the mountain as well. The atmosphere is nice and calming, even though it is known for being haunted. On a rare occasion, you may experience the ghost. But I go for the food because it is excellent, and the service is wonderful. read more

Food was amazing as always, their Valentine's special was a great deal (24oz New York Strip, 2 lobster tails, 2 glasses of champagne, 2 salads, and 2 sides for $170). Service, on the other hand, was awful. We showed up 30 minutes early to our reservation to go grab a drink at the bar while we wait which became super crowded, not the restaurants fault at all. What was the host's fault was pulling us to be seated in the downstairs area 10 minutes after our reservation when we had a reservation for the upstairs dining area, then requiring us to wait another 20 minutes for the table that we reserved (they had walked several groups upstairs btw). But due to how crowded it was, our bar spot had already been filled just in the time it took for the host to try to give us a different table. But then our table was great, tucked away into the side, felt very private. The problem was that there was a table of 9 in front of us that our waitress checked on 4 times inbetween each time she checked on us. Every time we tried to get her attention her eyes would not go above the group in front of her. She forgot items twice, one time saying the bartender was very busy with martinis and so she had to open my beer herself (she could've brought it unopened, instead of waiting 20 minutes). But then once the large group left we were suddenly no longer invisible. Food 10/10, service 3/10. read more

There is something wrong with their online reservation system. I booked a reservation for 6:30 pm and it changed it to 4:30 somehow. There were people in front of me where they did not have their reservation at all. The hostess said that there was a glitch in the system. I recommend that you pay close attention to the text that they send you to confirm your reservation and that it is the correct time. read more

It was a cold snowy night and we wanted something warm to eat so I pulled up my trusty Yelp app and began the search. Captains Anchorage was the final choice and we were off. When we arrived it was very busy, but we still had to wait about 20 mins to be seated because we didn't have a reservation. We were seated upstairs in a booth for 2. Our waitress was so friendly and nice. She made suggestions and allowed us to make our own choice. The drinks were pretty tasty. The mushrooms came out hot, but because the restaurant was short staffed, we weren't able to add them to our steak entree as was recommended by the waitress. I wanted a steak so the anchor aweigh was what I decided on because it sounded tasty. It comes with a side, I chose a baked potato and added a side of veggies. Our waitress came back and said they ran out of baked potatoes! Like wait, what?! Not okay, but if you don't have a choice, you just accept what it is. Our waitress comes back and says she captured a potato after all! Yes!!! Amazing service! Anyways, the fresh tomato on top of a lukewarm steak was not good. The flavor was okay, but not worth the price paid. Overall, I would not go back. read more

Phenomenal food and service! We came here for Mother's Day dinner and it did not disappoint! Clam chowder 10/10: loved it! You get the choice of soup or salad with your meal. Prime rib 10/10: the prime rib was seasoned well and delicious on its own. But the dish came with the most delicious béarnaise sauce that completely elevated it. I got mine with steamed veggies. Cooked perfectly. My husband got his with fries. They were warm and crispy on the outside. Service 10/10: the host was so accommodating! She seated us a little earlier than our reservation and also cleared a booth table for us immediately. Our waitress was very friendly and checked up on us periodically. I went last night and had a great meal at the bar. This place is definitely like stepping back in time, in a good way! Reminded me of a classic Wisconsin supper club. They have a great happy hour from 4:30-5:30. I ordered my steak off of the regular menu. They are dealing with road construction right now, don't let that stop you from going. I walked there from my hotel and one of the construction workers took my hand and lead me through the muck. I didn't talk to The manager, but he was checking in with other customers. Visited this restaurant after many, many years during our stay in Big Bear to celebrate my wife's birthday. Didn't really remember it at all. We found the food, service and restaurant comfort/decor better than we anticipated. My wife had the Halibut and I had the pork chop. Both were cooked well, flavorful and moist. The sides we selected were all prepared well. As it was my wife's birthday the restaurant provided a slice of cheesecake with chocolate sauce drizzled over it. A really good dessert. read more

I would suggest if you are coming here to have a reservation, they seem to book up rather quickly, in our last trip to Big Bear we could not make a trip here happen. The hostess, waitress and other staff were very nice. We sat upstairs in the back, the chairs were a bit uncomfortable at the table we were at, not sure if they are all that way or not. Our waitress was very friendly, we opted for a Filet for my wife and the steak I wanted was out, so I went with the porterhouse per suggestion. These were both served with Salads and Fries. The Salads were not entirely what I expected from the price range of the meals here, they seem to be prepackaged salad mix placed in small bowls ahead of time and stored with the dressing on the side. The fries were pretty plain run of the mill steak cut fries. The filet my wife was served was very chewy, while she is much pickier when it comes to meat than I am, I tasted a small piece and it was definitely not a melt in your mouth experience, they were fantastic in exchanging her meal and she upgraded to crab legs which she really enjoyed. The porterhouse I had was ok, it was not seasoned or if it was it was not noticeable. I ordered it medium rare, and it came up more medium well/well than medium rare. We did not leave here hungry by any means; it was plenty of food and they gave my wife a slice of cheesecake for her birthday. I just would say that I expect more from a meal that cost over a decent chunk over $200! read more

Ive only ever eaten at this restaurant twice. The first time was at the beginning of 2024 with a large party and everything was nice then. However, my visit lastnight was the stark opposite. Besides the ambiance, which is always nice, the whole dinner was absolutely horrible. I came here at end of December for my birthday (on the day of). The FoH manager came to the table to bring the table water right as we were seated and to take our drink orders, they came back with the drinks in a decent enough time. Afterward, my table had our dinner orders taken by the manager, again because our waitress was too busy to see us (which I get, they were busy so thats not an issue), we received our soups and salads pretty soon after our orders were put in, so that was great. However, that's where the good parts ended. After that we sat without hearing anything from the wait staff about our entree orders for OVER an hour. We asked about the progress of our orders when the manager walked by again to which he assured they were almost out.. then he proceeds to walk over to the nearest waiter station to put in our order because he definitely forgot to put our order in (He sat there for 5 min inputting an order in the computer right after talking to us). All orders came out a time later, cold and under cooked... some of ky party returned their orders to the kitchen to be reheated, and those that ordered fish didnt get their plates until after the reheated plates came back to the table (15 min later), I myself had ordered Med-Rare Filet and it was blue rare. By the time our table was served of our entrees, we were all so completely over it. I didnt bother ordering desert... This dinner experience put a pall on my birthday. I will not choose to return to this location for a very long time. read more

We had dinner here last night. It took a few turns to get to our table but it was a cute setup. Kendra and Carrie/Kara took turns waiting on us. They were so warm and friendly. They made good suggestions and we all had the homemade clam chowder. We all ordered different types of steak and my son ordered the mac n cheese with these amazing fries. I came here with my lovely significant other and we waited well over 1.5 hours after ordering our food to receive any of it. The interior is pitch perfect with original furnishings, fireplaces, and photos of Andy Devine (the original owner and actor). The bar has a big fireplace and the booths are cozy and private. The service was, well, it's what service should be everywhere. Attentive, prompt, and incredibly friendly. It's the kind of place where the current owner will talk to you and make you feel special. The food was great too. Big Bear seems to be high on mediocre, overpriced restaurants. This was not that place. Bread, clam chowder, salads all great. Cheese curds, they're delicious; crunchy, salty and cheesy. NY Strip was very good. Others in the party had the prime rib, great; and fish, very tasty. In Big Bear for a weekend trip and wanted to finally try a local restaurant. Went in on a Saturday night, party of 7 and were seated upstairs. Pros: able to make reservation and seated right away Food was delicious. Everyone enjoyed their meal (steak, prime rib & tortellini) Cost was reasonable. Cons: Slow service. We were seated right away but after we placed our orders, we barely saw our server. At one point someone in our party had to get up and ask for what we needed. Also didn't get one of the cocktails we ordered and it was still on the bill so then had to wait longer to get it removed from the bill. Overall I would come back knowing what to expect and considering the other options in Big Bear. This is probably 1 step up from an Outback as far as steakhouses go so if your a fan of Outback you'll enjoy the food here. read more

From the quality of the food, to the service and the ambiance, this is our go to place when we're in Big Bear. It's a throw back to the old days when portions were hefty and restaurants were welcoming. My favorite is the beer batter shrimp, but honestly everything is great (be sure to ask for the homemade tartar sauce if you get seafood. We also always make reservations to sit at one of the tables in the bar area. Lorraine is usually the waitress in there and she is excellent!
