My prime rib was okay but they put too much au jus on the plate plus a sprig of rosemary. I would order it again but ask for the au jus on the side and no rosemary. My wife enjoyed her shrimp but thought the portion was a little small. Service was great. We would definitely return and recommend, especially if you like an "old school " steakhouse. read more

Est. 1947- Does a ghost named George, haunt the Captains Anchorage? Well I didn't see him, but I did enjoy an evening, in one of the oldest restaurants in all of Big Bear Valley. Originally named, 'The Sportsman Tavern', the restaurant was the idea of Andy Devine, a Western character actor of the 1930's and 40's. The Captains is an old school Seafood and Steak House, complete with red leather booths, a comfortable bar, and a large stone fireplace. The menu is what one would expect - Seafood and Steaks. The standard offerings are all here: Lobster, Crab Legs, Seabass, Salmon, Top Sirloin, New York Strip, Filet Mignon and Prime Rib. My party tried a variety of dishes, all of which were good. I had the Sautéed Fresh Mushrooms (nice) and the 12oz Prime Rib, medium Rare. Unfortunately it was under cooked, and a bit lacking in flavor. They took it back and cooked it some more. Not the best piece of meat I've had, but they did what they could. Regardless, I will come back next time I'm in town. Big Bear has a limited supply of good restaurants and the decor and service were good enough for me to return. Hopefully the steak will be cooked just right, and delicious. We were on the road for a long day and this place was serving food until 10pm. The decor is cool, rustic and tells the story of the place. You could tell locals frequent it. The service was friendly, helpful and attentive. We arrived 30 minutes before closing and weren't rushed and they definitely tried to get the food out quickly. Prime rib was good, pretty run of the mill. The artichoke presentation was pretty. It's served with Mayo and drawn butter. There's no pretense, the menu literally says mayonnaise. The shrimp was not good, and our waiter took it without problem and said she would inform the management. No complaints about the salads. The bread and butter were tasty. Overall food was just ok. We went to the Captain's Anchorage for Labor Day weekend, and it wasn't up to par. Before I dive in, I do want to say that the food wasn't bad. We ordered, prime rib, fontina cheese dip, and clam chowder. Everything was well seasoned and was tasty, BUT there was a lack of quality control. First, we ordered the fontina cheese dip for our appetizer and the cheese itself was amazing, however, the toasted sourdough slices that it came with it tasted stale. Almost as if it tasted like it was frozen or in the fridge for a while. We had to ask for more bread. That was an easy fix, but more inconvenient than anything. Moving onto the prime rib. Four out of five of us ordered the prime rib. Three of us ordered the 8oz and one ordered the 12oz. The inconsistencies were frustrating. The 12oz looked like an 8oz and was not cooked at the requested medium temperature. When asked to cook it a little longer the prime rib came back looking like a charred steak and was overly salted. The person in our party couldn't even eat it. Next, one of the 8oz prime ribs was so full of fat that there was hardly any meat on it. When discussing with the waiters about this issue, one man was really condescending with us and said, "well you did order the 8oz, right?" after we complained about how small it was. The manager came over to talk to us about the fatty prime rib and she tried to school us about how prime rib is supposed to be a fatty cut. We are well aware that it is a fattier cut of beef, however, this cut that our party member received looked completely different next to my 8oz cut. There was so much fat surrounding the red meat itself that it became inedible and it was cooked more to be rare rather than to medium rare. In the end, two party members did not eat their food after returning it. We were comped for the meals that were not eaten, and it's greatly appreciated. Going out to a nice restaurant is not easy to do these days, and we paid good money for prime rib. Is it too much to ask to get an edible cut of meat, have fresh bread, and not have condescending service? read more

TLDR: This would be a five star review if the beef were properly cooked. I've been meaning to try this restaurant for a while. We stopped by last year on a whim and left since we didn't have reservations; the wait was quite long with no reservations. This time, I made reservations the evening before. Reservations were easy enough to make. We had a party of 5 including two children, so I called to make the reservation as the online instructions stated to do for parties over 4. When we arrived, we were seated promptly upstairs. The entire restaurant has a very dim vibe with very little outdoor light. Our party ordered margarita perfecta and tequila mockingbirds, both of which were deliciously strong. For food, we ordered the sauteed mushrooms, chilean seabass with steamed vegetables, 16oz prime rib (medium rare), 24oz porterhouse (medium rare), kids' chicken strips, and a kids' prime rib (medium). These came with salads, clam chowder, fries, and sweet potato fries. The mushrooms, salads, and clam chowders, came out very quickly. However, the main dishes took at least 40 minutes to arrive after the mushrooms were served. This was surprisingly slow since we had a 4:30pm reservation so the restaurant was still less than 50% full. I appreciated the coloring pages and crayons that were provided to entertain the children. The highlight was the chilean seabass; it was perfectly cooked with amazing flavor. The sauteed mushrooms were decent too, possibly because they tasted as if they were soaked in butter. YOLO. The prime rib and porterhouse on the other hand were a disappointment. We ordered the adult prime rib to be medium rare and the kid's prime rib to be medium. When they were delivered, they were quite pink and bloody. I expressed my surprise with a "whoa" and the server stated that he put in the order as "medium" and asked if that was okay. We shrugged and decided to just go with it. I've ordered rare prime rib before, but this was another level of rare, basically raw. The entire middle of the prime rib was bloody and chewy. I took about two bites of the middle portion and gave up; each bite had to be chewed for at least 10 minutes and at that point I just decided to swallow it. The porterhouse was supposed to be cooked medium rare as well but was overcooked; I'd estimate it to be about medium-well. At least I didn't have to chew it for 10 minutes, I suppose. Perhaps we should've sent the prime ribs back to be recooked, but other reviews have mentioned that it returned overcooked. We decided to pack up the prime rib dishes to go. We seared the prime rib on the stove at home for a few minutes and it came out medium-rare and delicious. Overall, the service was attentive and the non-beef foods were delicious. Perhaps we will stick to seafood until they figure out how to properly cook beef. read more

Go someplace else pure and simple. I am not exaggerating when I say this was the worst meal and experience having a meal in my life. We came for my girlfriend's birthday, thinking we would have a good time and have a great meal at a nice expensive restaurant. It started when we ordered drinks, she ordered a Pinot Grigio, and a I ordered a Pale Ale and she was brought a red and I was brought the stout. I just shrugged and drank what was brought to me she sent it back. We ordered and finally her wine came. We got the cheese curds, they were good. Had better at Yard House, but they were good. After a little bit she ordered another wine and it never came. The salad and soup came out, was okay, nothing special. Food came out and the girlfriend ordered another wine because well the other glass didn't come, we both cut into our steaks and mine was medium well, not rare. Hers was the same. She ordered medium rare but didn't think it would look well to send 2 steaks back. When it was brought to the attention of the staff they asked me if I wanted to send it back, I was like yeah a 60 dollar steak I want it right. Then another waitress came over and was trying to explain to me that there will be a thin line of pink in the steak. I was like yeah, I ordered it rare it should all be pink. I told them to cook it 3 minutes on each side and it will be fine. Came back, it was still cold, and looked like the cooked it 3 minutes total which was better than being over cooked. The garlic mashed potatoes were okay. We both agreed that the meal wasn't that great and not worth 60 bucks. They brought her a piece of cheese cake and sang to her, that was cool. Bill came and they charged us for 3 wines, already annoyed with the place then that happened. After they finally found the manager to take it off. He brought me the check again. I told the manager it was the worst meal and experience I've had and he wanted to know why. I had him take my card and pay then gave him the list on why it was horrible. His attitude was pretty much like whatever and walked away. Before they say anything I did tip and told the manager on the way his dismissive attitude greatly appreciated. The ambiance was nice. We dined here last night on our first night here in Big Bear. We were seated at the 2nd floor and the dining area is huge with log cabin feel. We ordered the Peanut Colada(loved it), Bourbon Bacon Jam ( original and awesome ) Prime Rib and Grilled Salmon are both delicious. We are not disappointed with the portion and did not leave hungry. The only thing we did have dessert as we are full Sean and his partner( sorry forgot his name ) are both excellent and gave great service and definitely 5 Stars . I've waited too long to write a review. Captain Anchorage is a MUST-go-to restaurant when you come to Big Bear. It has a long history as is a historical site. The Steamed Clams are amazing, especially the white wine garlic broth. Entrees are on the bigger portion size. We always order the Prime Rib, which is always delicious. My only complaint is the bread, which always seems to feel steamed, soft, and wettish. I prefer bread to be crunchy and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. This would be perfect for the clams. I guess being Italian, I am a lot more critical of bread. They have a perfect wine selection that pairs well with whatever you order. Service is always delightful. They know how to engage with their customers without being overbearing. The ambiance here is what you came to Big Bear for! Was invited here two weekends ago by our friends after a lovely day on the lake. Wow. What a great gem in Big Bear. Had a family vacation home in BB for many years but never knew about this place. The owner was great and shared stories with us about the history of the place and we actually got to see the video footage of the spiritual encounters. Captains Anchorage is our favorite restaurant in Big Bear. The food, atmosphere, and wait staff are amazing. We always get a cup of their famous clam chowder soup. I like the captain's chicken and teriyaki chicken and my husband likes all the steaks they offer but especially the prime rib. It has so much history which even includes a ghost story. We've been regular guests, usually visiting about a couple times a month, and have always enjoyed your restaurant. However, our last couple of visits have left us feeling unwelcome. During our previous visit, we didn't have a reservation and were made to feel like an inconvenience, so this time I made sure to reserve a table. We arrived early for our 4:45 p.m. reservation and were seated in the bar area, even though there was an open booth available in the dining room. It was disappointing to be placed there again, especially after taking care to make a reservation. Feeling unwelcome, we decided to leave. As we walked out, the hostess didn't acknowledge us, which only added to our disappointment. Unfortunately, we'll be taking our business elsewhere--perhaps The Pines or Santana and Mavericks.
