We ordered from carbonara's restaurant last night for the first time I ordered a veggie calzone which was OK my wife ordered eggplant with a side of pasta my wife's eggplant was fine however the pasta sauce was Not good it tasted simply like tomato paste I don't like to give a restaurant a bad rating and being Of Italian ancestry from New York City I am picky about Italian food but I honestly have to award them two stars for the quality of the food . My in-laws favorite place. Not sure why I haven't written a review before. Staff is always friendly and quick. This is Locals kind of place, so everyone seems to know everyone here and they all know my FIL. I always get the same thing which is Shrimp parm with angel hair. The shrimp is always done right with a yummy thick layer of mozzarella cheese on top. There's always plenty of food, so you can't go hungry here. My daughter LOVES the pizza. I think it's pretty yummy myself. Hubby always gets the chicken or meatball parm sandwich that is too big to eat in one sitting. read more

While the fried calamari was perfectly cooked, they only gave one lemon wedge when two would have been better. The mushroom soup was perfectly cooked but the flavor could have been more bold or they could have topped it with oregano, basil or parsley. The seafood platter was perfectly cooked but the pasta was overcooked. I'm ashamed I haven't reviewed one of my favorite local Italian places sooner. The food here has always been great from the chicken parm to the lasagna to the pizza. Anything with their tomato sauce is sure to please. I've also been impressed with recent take out orders during covid. Food has been well packaged and covid precautions inside restaurant seem to be well followed. It's a great family run place where you'll get some delicious food. read more

Parting ways from what had been our local go-to Italian restaurant for takeout or dining in. The owner was very rude to me on the phone and in person last week regarding their website advertised weeknite buy one entree get one entree half off. I never would treat a customer the way he treated me, especially knowing my family and I frequented his restaurant so often. Months back they didn't honor the savings and I let it slide. This is one of my favorite Italian Restaurants in the Pittsburgh area. I am gluten free and they now offer gluten free pasta! YAY! Well, I've been going to carbonaras since before my daughter was born in the fall of 1991. Could have probably paid for a year of her tuition with what I've spent on Chicken parmigiano over the years. Food is consistently great, service almost always good, but the eggplant parmigiano is no longer $7.50 as it was in 1991... Still keep going back though... The Tomato sauce is the best around. My family and I went to dinner here tonight after years of feeling in-between about it. We used to come here late 90's, we really liked it but forgot about the little authentic Italian place for a while. We went there tonight to celebrate my moms birthday, our server was Krista. She was awesome, she was around asking for drink refills, how everything was, but not too much that it was annoying. We really appreciated that, ask for her! The atmosphere was nice, it started getting busy around dinner time but it wasn't loud at all. We were able to talk and have a good time without having to yell across the table. As far as the food, we ordered some apps, pizza, lasagna and a few other pasta dishes and almost everything was delicious. The home made lasagna was my favorite! It was so hot and cheesy, perfection! The pizza wasn't the best, it could have been cooked a little longer. The tab came to just under $100 which, at first, seems high but we had 2 apps, 4 entrees, a few beers and a piece of tiramisu. Went here for a business lunch, cozy little spot in a smaller strip mall. I'm not overly familiar with this part of the South Hills so I drove by it initially. I can't speak much about the menu as I only ordered a small plain pizza, which admittedly was pretty good. Other folks has the tossed salad, pizza soup and an Italian hoagie. The hoagie looked like it was pretty good. Is definitely come back to try some of their pastas. Our waitress was attentive and kept our drinks full during our meeting but she had a very snarky attitude. Better than I remember! One of the best marinara sauces I've tried in this area. I got rigatoni with marinara and meatballs. It came with a tossed salad, which was just..meh, and garlic bread. The salads definitely need updated. It was just lettuce, shaved carrots, 2 slivers of pepper, and a tiny ring of white onion. The house italian lacked flavor. I'd try a different dressing. The meatballs were a good size and the marinara was chunky and delicious. The rigatoni was perfectly al dente. The garlic bread was standard. The kids Mac and cheese was very good! Wish it was on the adult menu! The four year old went crazy for it. The fried zucchini was amazing. Steak hoagie was really good, after adding the horseradish sauce. We didn't get dessert but will definitely try it next visit. :) The service was very friendly and efficient. Very happy I now closer. I'll visit more! read more

I figure, let me order a simple Italian dish, since i don't know this restaurant and I very skeptical of eating in unfamiliar restaurants. So, I had the Veal Scaloppini. It's an easy dish to make and I was not impressed. When I have the need to add salt and pepper to my any of my meals, especially the Veal Scaloppini, there's a problem. Then I had as part of my meal Caesar salad. First of all there should not be mozzarella cheese in a Caesar's salad. Parmesan is the only cheese in a Caesar. Why is there olives and tomatoes too? Then I get served bread with some type of garlic and butter spread in it. Geez! What da! And, where's the olive oil to dip my bread? Ok maybe I'm too harsh! The Peroni Beer was good! But, this is not authentic Italian cuisine. I will not be spending more of my money on this establishment ever again. read more

Dear Owner, If you are going to advertise coupons specials then put an expiration date on them and make sure your employees know whether or not to accept them if there isn't one BEFORE the customer orders and waitress says yes they are accepting it.. We ordered 2 Entrees yesterday expecting 2nd one to be 1/2 off as my coupon stated, after were ordered and then ate the cash register person at front came to our table and said we couldn't use the coupon. That is bait and switch folks, don't be so cheap we all know you don't need the money you've been there a long time and you do just fine. Solid 3 star meal with takeout that is typical of old school Pittsburgh Italian fare. Ordered the carbonara, which was a bit too oily and I would have liked it to be creamer. So, we ordered from this place a few months ago, and we thought it was pretty good. Tonight's take out meal was impressively bland. I'm not trying to be mean, but my pasta with meat sauce had no flavor at all. The dressing that came with my husband's salad was basically just oil, and the chicken tasted like it was boiled in water. Even the wedding soup tasted like water. It seemed like literally nothing was seasoned. The bread didn't even have garlic or salt. It was literally just bread and butter. We pulled out some wine to check our sense of taste (not joking), and thankfully our wine was delicious. when we don't want to go far, or spend alot, & i'm looking for pasta, we go here. they're an average place, & the food's usually decent. we ordered the calamari for an app, along with a bottle of primotivo. both came quickly. we get the calamari because it's usually tasty. it was like chewing on gumbands. i couldn't finish them. i left them for tom. tom ordered the fish sandwich with onion rings. i got the shrimp scampi with angel pasta. tom said his food was alright. nothing too exciting about the fish. my scampi came. it was supposed to be aglio olio. they apparently didn't drain the noodles enough because my oil was floating on top of the water in the bottom of my plate. every time i tried to take a bite, i got drenched with water. most of the taste stayed on the plate with the water. so disappointing! i mean, i know they're not great, but we've had way better from them! we got our desserts to go-a snowball cake & tiramisu. they were the best thing i tasted that night! we don't go here often. after this visit, it will be a while before we go back. read more

This restaurant is the epitome of average. Just super basic. Nothing stands out or makes you want to go back, however nothing is bad either. The atmosphere is very bland and old school. Just not my style. I had the margarita pizza which tasted more like a normal cheese pizza to me. The crust was good but the cheese not fresh. The one thing saving this place was how nice our server was. I really wanted wedding soup however the soup comes with beef meatballs. Carbonara's, to me, is your run of the mill Italian American restaurant. The sauce was sweet and the veal Parmesan was enjoyable. Would I come here again? Probably. Did it stand out? Not really. As with most Italian American restaurants, the portions were huge. So huge, that the hubby and I split an order of veal parm and it was enough to fill us. Our entree came with a side of pasta and a salad, which weren't too memorable, but were satisfying nonetheless. Given the distance from me, I will probably order from here again. A coupon for Carbonara's from one of those local, advert-ridden Town Planner Community Calendars had been nagging at me for months. Further exacerbating my itch, a woman we met at a Clutch concert earlier in the year told us she worked there, urging us come to come over for a spot of food. Last Sunday evening, a beleaguered Kay begged me to order pizza. Remembering the woman and the coupon and realizing I had yet to eat at Carbonara's, we placed a takeout order, whisking through Dormont, Mount Lebanon, and back to Beechview. The ticket was good for a free white pizza with the purchase of two large pies, toppings and other extras notwithstanding. I caught sight of the fellow Clutch fan as we awaited our food, but she was busy with patrons at the bar and was likely too buzzed the night of the aforementioned show to remember us, I imagine. So we let her be. The dining room was bustling with middle-aged and elderly customers as expected. Booth seats resembled leather couches, and overall, the decor looked somewhat unfinished. Teen and twentysomething servers skipped about, trying hard to stay on top of demand and seemingly succeeding. Welcome to Shoppin' Center Suburbia on a South Hills Sunday evening. Each pizza, from the small white, to the two colossal regulars were centered around a crust that felt like a cracker on the outside and sourdough bread on the inside. Other analogies that come to mind are flatbreads and pita. The sauce was miniscule, stingy even, but the lardy, party-hearty provolone (not mozzarella) was in abundance, forming strands with each pull from the teeth. The toppings for each were all fantastic. Be it bacon, olives, mushrooms, pepperoni, or tomato, none of them were swept up in the mix. The mushrooms were fresh, the bacon seemed cooked to order, and the tomato slices were straight from a backyard garden. The white pizza, however, with its garlic, olive oil, and grated Romano, stood out from its other behemothic brothers with its confident flavor profile. Had the sauce been more plentiful, these dough saucers would have soared to a 5 with no turbulence encountered. Dessert for me was a breezy, angelic, coffee-soaked primer on Tiramisu. Espresso-dusted, the cube of mascarpone was elegantly mousse-like, burying the pappy ladyfingers beneath in off-white luxury with hints of liquor subverting inhibitions slightly. It was fit for the opera. Here you have it, ladies, germs, foodies, and snobs, your quintessential, no-frills Italian-American family restaurant. Just got up and walked out after being seated for 10 minutes with no acknowledgement from wait staff. Restaurant wasn't busy. They did walk past numerous times, and answer who the super bowl halftime act is to the table behind us. Hostess happened to thank us on the way out the door, which I thought was a nice touch. Started off with Ham and Bean soup! Wow, was it great. Home cooked, Smokey ham, with Northern beans, thick and rich soup, fantastic!!!!! 5 stars for it! I had the Hot Sausage casserole,on top of Rigatoni, with a side of meatballs. Sauce was good, hot sausage was great. Meatballs were just ok, not bad. Girlfriend had Eggplant parm, she loved it. Decided to try a local place I've driven by a hundred times, Hey give it a shot. Ordered calamari as an appetizer as I looked at the menu and it came out instantly..... really right away. I figured it was already made and just sitting there or it wasn't done. The answer was B, not done. Breading falling off and the calamari itself was tough and under done. Ordered the angel hair pasta with marinara sauce. The noodles must have been made a long time earlier and been sitting in hot water the whole time. Way over done, kind of pasta mush. The sauce was absolutely flavorless. Nothing resembling an herb or spice or seasoning had been anywhere near it. Tomato sauce out of a can would have some taste. Remarkable. We didn't like the food here at all. The wedding soup was the worst I have ever had. The lasagna was terrible. The best thing we had out of whole meal was the water. And that's just the food. There was a old women working the counter up front and was so unprofessional. She would talk about people and run back to a hostess working and talk about customers just was not a great place which I'm sad for I like real Italian food and this just wasn't it. Carbonara's makes some of the best pizza in the south hills if not all of Pittsburgh. Tony Carbonara learned his way around a pizza kitchen by Joe Mineo, arguably the father of Pittsburgh Pizza. Tony still approaches pizza the same way that places like Fioris and Aiello's, other disciples of Joe Mineo, also do. A lot of care and attention put into every slice. I've had more than a few perfect pizza's from Carbonara's which is a heck of an average. You're missing out if you haven't tried this place. read more
