It's refreshing and has a nice flavor to it. The corn bread could be hit or miss - sometimes it's a little dry, but more recently it was pretty good. I also get a small cup of coffee for the road. The only downer is they stopped giving bbq sauce for the sides. I guess I should've asked. You also used to be able to pay for your coffee at the same register but now they make you pay for it at separate registers. Overall, I think this place is solid for a pit stop.

Harris Ranch: My Mandatory I-5 Stop…read more I've been stopping at Harris Ranch for years whenever I drive between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Now that I drive an EV, this place makes even more sense. Charge the car, stretch your legs, and get a serious steak before getting back on I-5. You also know you're getting close before you even see the sign. You can smell the countryside. And by "countryside," I mean cows. Lots of cows. For steak, I usually go big. Porterhouse, Ribeye, Prime Rib - I don't come to Harris Ranch to order a tiny piece of beef. What keeps bringing me back is consistency. The beef is excellent, the seasoning doesn't try to overpower it, and the kitchen is remarkably accurate with temperature. Rare is rare. Medium rare is medium rare. Medium is medium. After many visits over many years, that kind of repeatability gets my attention. The Ribeye is especially worth mentioning. On the larger cuts I've ordered, they preserve a generous ribeye cap instead of trimming away the best part. If you're a ribeye person, you already know. There is also a second stage to my Harris Ranch routine. Before leaving, I stop at Harris BBQ by the travel center and buy brisket for the road. Their brisket has a Texas BBQ influence but its own California personality. The cuts are big and thick, with dark bark, a visible smoke ring and plenty of smoked-beef flavor. The sauces and sides are different from what I normally associate with Texas BBQ - cornbread, jalapeño flavors and a little California mixed into the system - but it works. So after all these years, my Harris Ranch road-trip SOP is pretty simple: Charge the EV. Eat a big steak. Buy brisket for the road. Continue to San Francisco or Los Angeles. Service has always been friendly, and most importantly, the food has been remarkably consistent from visit to visit. Now it looks pretty run down. The restrooms are the most telling. I don't think anyone really cleans them. Probably just restocks them. The trash cans were overfilled, and the menu has also been taken over by bright paper covering old menu items and advertising new. Considering the size of Kettleman, this is par for the course, sadly. But the food. The food is great. We got the birria tacos and asada fries because they were out of nachos. What was supposed to be a quick to-go stop turned into a sit down because the kids asada fries took so long. I didn't mind. I was driving and needed time to eat. The birria tacos themselves were just OK in my opinion. Nothing a few squeezes of lemon wouldn't fix. But my friend from Ghana who traveled with us was blown away.
