I'm embarrassed to say I've lived here for 3+ years and didn't try Carl's until recently because they don't deliver. Don't let that deter you - I've tried them a couple times now and I'm convinced. I've been here a few times and while the subs are enormous I can't say they are that tasty. I like their menu of different subs but in my experience it's a lot of meat and less toppings. I know one usually doesn't complain about more meat but it's to the point where it falls out and that's all you can taste (as opposed to cheese, veggies or sauce). The meat quality doesn't seem so great to me either. It's crumbly and dry. Service is fast and nice but when it comes to food I prefer quality over quantity. I'm so full right now! So much cheese and meat I should be ashamed of myself. Now onto the review... Wasn't sure about this place the first time I went because my roll got soggy but I think it was all the teriyaki sauce and the fact that it had been rolled up for takeout for 39-45 minutes. Today I decided to venture back because of all the stellar reviews and I was not displeased. The roll was soft and chewy, it was loaded with peppers and onions that were not over cooked like most places do. The meat was bountiful and greasy the way it should be. I've only eaten the Mushroom Steak & Cheese w/ Mayo here and it's very tasty. It's one of my top 5 favorite sandwiches in the new England area. The steak looks like it's been put through a course sausage grinder. It's almost like a shredded beef, reminiscent of shredded cheese but with a little more girth. The bread is very soft, you can tell it's fresh. If you told me they purchased from a local bakery, daily, I would believe you. The staff is friendly, the food is good. Don't expect to be able to find a place to sit if you come at lunch time. It's always busy, but there's only like 4 or 5 seats total. We always order ahead and for take out. It's an open kitchen so you can see your food being prepared. I only gave 4 stars because it doesn't feel very clean inside. It may just be that the place is a little older. read more

I love this place. I grew up going to TC's and now that I work close to Carl's I can continue the sub love. For lunchtime - I recommend ordering ahead and bringing a friend to go pick it up - finding parking hasn't been a problem but on the off chance there isn't a spot... that friend comes in handy! I love the steak and cheese, the budster (although don't plan on doing anything productive after, so good but so filling), any of the burritos, and the salads! I'm here because Phantom Gourmet claimed how good it is. Not particularly friendly owner. Tiny place with no inside seating. Though it was warm outside, and they have some tables. We asked for toasted sub roll {better if they suggested butter, Mayo, etc on the sub roll) or maybe grilled it. The steak was a lot, and some sausage, cut up small, cheese, grilled onions, grilled peppers. It was certainly ok, a bit better. And much much better than one I had a fair the other day. The owner could have said, some people like, Mayo, hot sauce, etc etc. No lettuce or tomato- that might have been nice $10. Not inexpensive. I maybe should give 3.5 stars.. because I expected so much. I'd never make the long drive again. Yet they seem to do a good business. read more

This place is the only reason I'd go out to Waltham for. Sure you can get a steak and cheese lots of places but if I go to Carl's I want one of their tasty special subs. My current love is the Misteak. Chock full of steak, sausage, pepperoni, cheese and teriyaki sauce, Carl's never skimps on the meats. If you can't wait to settle down before diving into this sub be warned that it's hot. Not pepper hot, but coffee hot. I learned this the hard way when I took my first over zealous, impatient bite. I burned my tongue a bit, but it was so damn good. There's a couple tables and chairs strewn outside the shop. But if it's not so nice out you'll most likely take it to go. Subs come in 2 sizes, small and large. Unless you have a hole in your stomach and pretty much haven't eaten all day you want to get the small. Carl's "small" is the size of a 12" inch footlong at Subways only with more meat in every bite. More than enough steak and cheese a normal person can handle. I would feel guilty for eating an entire small if I didn't travel an hour out of my way to Waltham to get it. Carl's also serves chicken subs and burritos. But the steak subs are some of the best you'll ever taste in the Boston area and totally worth it. read more
