I have had stellar customer service throughout all my interactions here at CarMax Irvine. I purchased my car on March 7th 2020 with an appointment with Jim. He was polite and showed me around the car. Jim is great at securing loans under 3% APR if you have the right credit and factors. However, he let me use my own bank's financing and made the whole process smooth. Then, he let his co-worker Lou take over for test driving Lou is amazing. He showed me how to run the car the way he does. He has the same exact car except in yellow. He taught me downshifting gears to rev up the engine (makes the coolest sound in the world), turn off traction mode if needed (for spinning donuts, but for policy reasons we did not do any), the software portions of the car, and all the possible upgrades (though he would probably label them as "required necessities") in case I ever choose to modify my car down the line. This guy is a true baller. Vince was also finalizing the paperwork (showed me where to sign) and this guy knows all about the good food and must-eat places. There is a place that serves both Hot Pot and KBBQ TOGETHER. He is the ultimate food guru and document handler at CarMax Irvine. I was able to notice some electronic features not working (such as air conditioning), but thankfully due to CarMax's generous 90 day/4000 mile limited warranty, they will fix ANYTHING for FREE if it is in any way broken (even if one small bulb is out or key fob battery is dead) and listed under the warranty. Make sure to use this warranty to your advantage! They will fix basically anything wrong with the car so take the time to inspect it while you're in the shopping lot. CarMax is here to help, which is vastly different from private dealerships where once it's off the lot, everything is your responsibility under your own wallet (CarMax will pay for it all). Rick was also helping me out tremendously throughout this process. He documented all my requests with great detail to make sure everything under the generous warranty is fixed and flawless. They also provide a rental car while your car is being fixed! Rick hooked me up with a very sporty version of a Kia Optima, which has a rear diffuser (looks really cool) and even red painted calipers/covers. It's actually decently fast (0-60 in 5.7s, whereas my car does 4.9). He also is a car guy because he brought up the exact horsepower of my own car when he spoke to me (lol). Overall, I have had a 10/10 experience here. I love CarMax. I have had so many terrible experiences and lemons when I went with private dealerships in the past. I've been to 3 other car appraisers - reputable ones - my car has appraised $12k higher at all 3 spots. I was almost shocked thinking they would at least price match. Wait times given were so inaccurate, we already waited for 10 mins just for someone to come to the front desk ans help us lol, and then they gave an estimate of 20 mins. We come back 35mins later (time stamped bc I sent my boyfriend cars I was looking at) and they proceeded to not apologize for the wait or even acknowledge the inconvenience, said it'll probably be 25 more mins, and when I brought up how the other person said it would be a TWENY MIN wait, was very snarky and literally offered the response of "well I'm not gonna kick the customers out." Their online services gave me a value of $41600 for a fully-loaded 2019 RX 350 and upon taking the car to their lot, the value dropped to $38,800.00 I took the whole afternoon off to make the trip to this dishonest company to be offended with this bate and switch. As you all know, some of the dealerships got themselves into trouble by doing the same thing. Telling consumers one story and upon arrival, story changed dramatically. I understand if the car wasn't in the condition reported, but it was. Their excuse was that my car didn't have the trim. Are you kidding me? Grand theft auto? What do you call it when you give your car, and a signed clear title to somebody and they give you nothing in return? Sounds a lot like grand theft to me. That's exactly what Carmax did to me. On Sunday, I sold a car to Carmax in Irvine. They offered me $200 less than Carvana. The guy in the white shirt who handled the appraisal said "Carvana makes you wait for your money. We give you a check right now." While technically true, he misled me. Carmax did give me a check but it's no good. I took the check Carmax gave me to my bank on Monday morning. I bank at Wells Fargo. The check from Carmax was drawn on a Wells Fargo account. Wells Fargo said "Carmax requires a four day hold on the funds. You won't have the funds available until Thursday." I spoke to the manager of Wells Fargo. The manager said Carmax is a very large commercial account for them and Carmax requires a four day hold on all of their checks. Wells Fargo has no way to override the four day hold. Carmax has my car, the title, and I have nothing. Does Carmax require Wells Fargo to hold all checks for four days because they don't have sufficient funds? Are their margins so razor thin that they don't always have enough cash? Is Wells Fargo helping Carmax prevent overdrafts? Went in to have my car appraised in September, they valued it at $13200. Four months went by and I figured I'd finally go through with it. Expected the car to be worth less, but you want to know how much less?! $3200 in four months!!! I was absolutely shocked when he told me 10 grand. I laughed and told him to look up the value he gave me before. He claimed he could see that far back. The car had been driven 300 miles since it's last appraisal and this guy tried to gauge how desperate I was instead of being a straight shooter. I declined, listed the car on Craigslist and had it sold with 48 hours for 12750. What's ironic about this all, I have a friend who had a jeep renegade, same year as my rav 4 but it had a destroyed transmission. My friend traded in his jeep for more than I would've received for my rav4 which had all service records available. Moral of the story, they don't know what the h3LL they're doing over there. AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Horrible customer service. I arrived at CarMax in Irvine (Located at: 9501 Research Dr, Irvine, CA 92618) at 3pm for a car appraisal. Before I arrived at CarMax, my car was fully functioning and in working condition and had been garaged and taken care of for years without any issues with the sunroof. During the appraisal process, the CarMax employees taking a look at the vehicle broke the convertible top. The hardtop of the convertible became stuck in the open position and is now inoperable. Upon speaking with the manager (who scolded me for taking pictures of my car in the stuck position) had a tech attempt to fix the roof, however, they just jammed the roof shut, and now the windows on the vehicle are stuck in an open position and the vehicle continues to beep while driving since the car is registering the roof being still open. The button to operate the convertible top now remains lit up in red, and is fully broken at this point. I arrived with a fully functioning vehicle, and left CarMax with my car being inoperable. When asking if they could have the mechanic fix the vehicle, and/or provide a contract showing CarMax's liability in these instances, the manager Luis Rodriguez told us he would not provide anything to us and that they are not liable and said if we do not leave the property they will call the police. This is not how a business should operate so I am warning others to stay away and not trust them with your vehicles. read more

When I went in there telling them I wanted to buy a car, they told me I needed to wait 45 minutes for a sales representative. I waited in the lobby for nearly 2 hours. Then I found out they didn't have anything in my category, and it would have to be shipped in. I said OK. They said the car would be in within a couple of days. The employee told us, well that's CARMAX, they do that double booking but we are trying to fix that, plus, we can't go by people leaving their emails on website cause when we call back they never pickup or respond to the email---We get it sir an we weren't told that on phone but we were given this time by a rep cause we changed it to today and the rep gave my lady that time we been here since 4:45pm an no service. We still want the car but don't want to return an have to wait another hour or 2 it took us an hour an a half to get there to turn around an drive back an hour an a half without the car we were promised earlier in the day. WE are here, our appt is 5, I'm checking in to let you know I AM HERE! my info is in the system. My lady made her decision her car should have been ready since my lady called before 12pm 3/06 to have all paperwork done electronically. When we first came here, the curly haired guy at the front desk acted like he was irritated with us because as he sad to his supervisor, he was busy with a sale. He wanted to brush us off and pawn us off to somebody else. The supervisor found a nice gentleman to help us. Although that should have been a red flag, we decided to continue anyway because the other gentleman was really trying to help us. They told us not to have it fixed as if there were issues, they would "for sure get the van fixed." Well, we took it to our trusted mechanic who said that we most definitely need to replace the shocks and oil change. We drop the van off at Carmax in Irvine at 8:30 in the morning. We heard nothing from anybody. I decided to just call them since I hadn't heard a thing and was told to go ahead and pick it up. AT 5:30 PM!! And then I am told that they don't want to replace the shocks or even do a measly oil change on the van. I arranged to purchase a car - completed the finance deal, had my insurance add the car to my policy and forward binder (requirement supposedly), and showed up for my 1 pm appt. I Uber'd over and no one knew I was coming. The hold on my car had been deleted by someone and they kept me there over an hour while they tried to figure out what went wrong. I asked to speak with the manager but he was busy on the phone with the store my car was being shipped to Never once spoke with me. No apology. When I left in another Uber we drove along side my car leaving doe another store. Cost me $50 with Uber, more than a couple of hours of my time, and whatever my insurance company will be charging me. Wow.. Carmax continues to haunt me to this day and it's been almost 2 weeks since I returned the car I purchased.. Called about a black 2014 Honda civic si sedan. I wanted to hold the car so that I could see what it was like and test drive it, and so he placed a hold which was quick and painless but he mentioned that he had other people interested in the car. I get to the dealership after work and his fellow salesman is there to take care of me because he had family business to attend to. This guy is all ready to fill out sale paperwork and talking about what documents I need.. Immediately I start feeling pressured. I tell him that I need to think about it and he's telling me about these other guys who he mentioned by first name who were bugging him about the car.. Ok.. So I like the car, regardless, and tell him I'd like to purchase the car and I'll be back the next day to sign paperwork and put the money down.. He makes me promise I'll be there because he's putting his neck on the line by holding the car.. So I buy the car the next day as I said I would, and drive the car home 45 minutes.. I stop at a gas station and when I turn the car on, check engine light, power steering light, tire pressure light, traction control light, mmi reads warnings for all mentioned lights plus hill assist warning, and some emissions warning. Needless to say I take the car back (but to a closer carmax in Ontario, ca) the next morning, but mail,e I work I have to drop it off at 7:30am and make an appointment for service at 9am..BTW now I hear the brakes grinding.. 19k miles? Wtf... Anyway, when I get there the guy checks me in and asks what's wrong with the car and i tell him also about the brakes, and i ask for a loaner and he says not until they can see that the car is indeed in need of service.. I grit my teeth..He then pulls it into the garage and sees all the lights and says nothing.. So I hail an uber. An hour later mechanic tells me that my car needs service and that I can pick up my loaner. He also says that sometimes cars can take up to 30 days in the shop and Honda dealers don't consider carmax a priority. He also reminds me I can still return the car before the 5 days are up as if this was my last chance.. Also he didn't hear anything wrong with the brakes.. Lol but it's a very obvious grinding noise.. He says well I didn't drive it much because of its condition.. So I come back to the dealership in Ontario to return my Irvine bought car, they want to make my life a living hell and I'm probably stuck waiting 2 hours for them to get the paperwork ready to return. While waiting, they offer different vehicles to exchange for.. No civic si except for out of state.. No they will not waive transfer fee even in my circumstances.. The next day after my horrible experience returning the car, I get a call from carmax service department while I'm at work asking me to verify if I returned the car completely and wasn't getting service, so I tell him I returned the car officially last night. Ok. Hours later on lunch I find my car while browsing cars online on the Carmax website, same vin number.. Wow.. I brood on this for a day and finally I call carmax corporate and she says she is going to look into this.. After I get off the phone i search for the car and cannot find it.. She calls me back the next day and says I hope this gives you peace of mind the car is not for sale but is being serviced.. Some peace of mind.. Finally done, get my down payment back in the mail a week later, call my lender and find out they only got 18,000 out of the 19,500 carmax was supposed to return (and the return paperwork clearly stated 19500 was going back to Santander).. Now I have to call carmax and ask them why they aren't paying back the full amount because I can't get a new loan voucher until i close out my current loan.. Finally it's straightened out, right? Yeah after 2-3 business days.. Meanwhile the car I found to purchase after my bad experience gets sold to someone else. Avoid carmax, they don't do inspections on cars, they probably just disconnect the battery cable and reset CEL's. They don't care about customers all they care about is selling whatever piece of crap comes onto their lot to whoever walks through the doors. I doubt they even know if their cars are any good because they probably don't know anything about cars in the first place. If you got a good car from carmax you're probably extremely lucky and also probably bought a really common car like a Honda civic lx with no miles on it..my 2cp for what it's worth. read more

Just returned back from test driving two cars on their lot and had a problem with salesperson "Kevin". Put our name on the list and waited around 20 mins to be called. As my daughter approached the front check-in station "Kevin" was standing there and did not say a word. We approached the receptionist to tell him we had been notified and were ready. He pointed to Kevin who just sat there and looked at us. Didn't introduce himself nor ask who my daughter was, nothing. My daughter initiated the conversation by asking Kevin if we could test drive some cars out on the lot. His immediate response was "How do you know if they're even available" in a very snarky and condescending tone. I chose to overlook his rudeness and asked if we could drive any of the Mercedes Benz GLC 300's to get a feel for them when he interrupted me and said, again in a rude tone, that you couldn't just drive "any" GLC 300 except for the one you actually intended on buying. That was it for me with his rudeness and I asked for a different salesperson. He then informed me that we'd go to the bottom of the line as other people were waiting, again, very rudely. That's when I asked to speak with the manager and clarify that I would not be placed at the bottom of the wait list simply because we didn't like Kevin or his surliness. Thankfully he informed me that it was not the case or policy and that Kevin was wrong. Long story short, I have used this dealership in the past and never had a bad experience. Quite the opposite, every one of the sales associates have been exceptionally pleasant as was JR who saw us after Kevin. I understand when someone is having a bad day or just grumpy for whatever reason but it has no place in a customer service atmosphere. Kevin should probably be counseled as to his dismissive attitude and perhaps reminded that young people buy cars every day and deserve as much respect as your older clients. In a nutshell, ask for anyone but Kevin and we did end up buying a car from Ty at their Costa Mesa location. read more

Wow...I never even suspected how awesome CarMax could be. I've bought over twenty cars in my life and never have I had an experience even a fraction as good as I did at CarMax. Already two of my friends have heeded my accolades and they too have had excellent experiences. The place is a highly efficient car-dealing machine. I laugh at the complaints I see on here about people with pie-in-the-sky ideas of what their car is worth and feeling like they are being lowballed - funny, really - because they are of course free to sell their car to anyone at any time for any price they'd like - and yeah, they'll probably make a couple grand more than trading it in - that's how it works EVERYWHERE - unless there is some car buying charity I'm unaware of :-/ Anyway, the CARMAX website is so far beyond what ANY other car selling company has in place, it's amazing. As a developer myself, I'm here to tell you - it's state-of-the-art. It's very easy to find whatever you're looking for and all variations therein. Heck, I use their website for basic car research even when I'm not in the market for buying/selling. I should not leave out that it is true that their "Maxcare" warranty is highly favored. My latest purchase was a '14 Mercedes-Benz S550 and I had a little chat with the service advisor at my local Mercedes dealer (at this point car is still under factory warranty...), and he was telling me how they love to do dealer service working with Maxcare and how they pay all claims without question...unlike other extended warranty companies out there. So I'll likely in the future be enjoying this too. Want to know something interesting? My car had brand new tires installed on it...BUT, I came to learn that Mercedes specified run-flat tires because the car carries no spare. I went back to Carmax and complained about this...and bingo...a week later they're installing for FREE a set of $2000 brand new Pirelli run-flat tires, because they verified with the dealer that the car was supposed to have these. Is there another used-car dealer on the planet that would have done this?? Probably not. In summary, I am now a big Carmax fan and would recommend it to anyone, especially people I like. My boyfriend and I just bought a Kia Soul from Patrick at this CarMax location. Patrick was amazing, he went above and beyond what I would ever expect a car salesman to do. We were having some issues when financing came up and we had to come in the following day to complete the purchase. Patrick came in on his day off to ensure we were taken care of. He answered all of our questions, and made us feel comfortable. It was like buying a car from a friend, not a stranger. If you go to buy a car ask for Patrick. The only advice I would give is, if you choose to find your own financing within their three day grace period do not sign up for their gap insurance because it will be voided when you receive your new financing. Carmax (Irvine) sold us a car that cannot be registered in California. We purchased a Jeep Wrangler on December 1st of 2022. We were told by the dealership that the permanent plates would be sent out in the upcoming weeks. After five weeks, we called to get the status, and the representative said they would check and call us back. Two weeks later, we called again, and the representative stated that the car was registered out of state and that we would have to do a VIN verification. We brought to vehicle to Carmax and did the verification, and Carmax stated a couple of weeks to receive the plates and registration. Fast forward four months, and no word from Carmax. We've had two employees pulled over and threatened with the impoundment of the vehicle. We contacted the CHP, who stated the dealer plates were no longer valid and the vehicle could not be driven legally. After multiple calls to Carmax, the representative said to bring the car back because the vehicle was unregisterable. We had to spend 5 hours of our day to sit a CarMax dealership (Ontario) for the return. Carmax should have never sold us a vehicle with issues like this. read more

This review is for a car sale I made to carmax. Carmax gave me the highest offer for my 2019 VW Jetta R-Line. Higher than Vroom, Carvana, KBB, and Shift. It took awhile because the Irvine location was busy but the offer they made was ultimately fully honored. I half expected it not to be, as carmax has a bit of a reputation for low balling. This sale went fantastic though and I was very happy with how it was handled. Thanks guys! read more

They sold the same car online and in person. Buyer got a loan, insurance (with the cars VIN number) and paid for delivery all online and they sold the car in the store to someone else!! Told her "oops" we have another car you can buy that's $5k more expensive and will cost $2,700 to ship. Then come to find out they were just holding the car for someone else!! Y'all are slimy!! Will never buy from here!! read more
