My initial experience with Carmax was fantastic. I couldn't have been happier with my Sales Associate and the entire buying experience. However, that is where it ended. They have been completely incompetent when it comes to getting the vehicle registered and new plates. I am now 1 week from my temporary plates expiration and the DMV still does not have everything they need to complete the transaction. I got a call from Carmax 2 months after my purchase that the VIN Verification Form was missed so I had to go back to Carmax so they could complete it. I was assured this would be sent to the DMV on the next business day only to find out that it was sent a week later and the DMV still does not have it. They are sending me new temp plates but this has been a time-consuming and frustrating experience. read more

I don't get why theres an option to make an appointment for an appraisal of the car and they make you wait 30 minutes for someone to go look at your car and they keep trying to make an excuse as other people are having their cars appraised as well, but isn't that the point of an appointment to get it done as quickly as you can and get taken care of at the time of your appointment. I told them that this model year is missing significant features like a 360 camera and it also had some rattles in the sunroof and hatch and some other things and that I would like to try it out in the real world to see if those features were a dealbreaker. They flat out said they were not authorizing it and gave no reason why. They said that I should just buy the car and return it within 30 days if I don't like it. When driving the car it was smooth until I came back and parked and smelt a strong smoke smell like burnt plastic. I let Katherine know and she right away brought it to maintenance to check it out. I guess it was burnt plastic that melted all over the engine so it was no longer sale-able. She pulled up other cars in my budget and style which I found another vehicle I really liked I ended up leaving with the car and the whole process was smooth. On 3/31/22, I bought a car at the CarMax Pleasanton. CarMax want me to pay 10.95% APR bought my Bank (Patelco Credit Union) gave 3.09% APR. Patelco Credit Union have a better APR for me so I paid my car to Patelco. I bought the car and CarMax told me that my vehicle registration will be in my mail within a weeks. I never got my vehicle registration and I called CarMax about my Vehicle registration and they said they working on it. I called later to tell them that I don't law enforcement with my car license plate. They told me that my sticker on the windshield should fine. On 7/6/22 I got a mail from my Patelco Credit Union and the letter said, "As of the date of this letter, Patelco Credit Union has not received the title or any evidence of a perfected lien" I called CarMax (Gabriel ) and he will get vehicle registration. 7/19/22 I call CarMax (Pauline) and they let Gabriel know. 7/21/22 I called CarMax (Gabriel ) and he said they talking with my Patelco Credit Union and they are taking care of this. I have seen my vehicle registration. 3/23/23 I called CarMax (Briana) and she will have messages for Gabriel because she will be on Tuesday. I call CarMax and left a message but the phone was busy. I called again and she said she will give them the message about my vehicle registration. CarMax called my phone and left a message regarding they want my car and they want to pay what I pay my Patelco Credit Union. I never gotten my car vehicle registration. Please help me. read more

My son picked out and put a Camaro on hold to possibly purchase from this place. We went in and spoke to a sales lady, I think her name was isilya or something like that. Older lady. My son looked at the car and fell in love, off to a good start. Sat down to do the financing, approved for a loan, awesome. I asked about GAP insurance and for some odd reason they don't offer that?!?! Definitely not buying my 20 year old son a Camaro without GAP insurance.... Ok that's not the part that literally drove us away. We decided after talking it over that we would use their financing and then go to our credit union (who offers GAP) and have them refinance for us later in the week. Ok, let's buy this car. She was so eager to sell us the car that she almost refused to let us test drive it. I said "ok we still need to have my son drive the car before we sign anything!" She literally said "oh you want to test drive it! " DUH!! So at this point she was clearly annoyed by the fact that we wanted he to do her job and allow my son to test drive this car before spending $26k on it. She pulls up in the car for him to test drive, gets out and says "ok, go drive it." My son heads out of the parking lot and guess what starts blinking and then stays ON?!?! The friggin check engine light! Like seriously, you were really going to sell my 20 year old son a car knowing the check engine light was on! How unethical can one be?!?! I told my son turn this car around, we're leaving. We went inside and told her and she acted so nonchalant about it. Oh we can probably fix that. WTF!!! How does this lady even have a job!! Seriously, this place is terrible! In addition I went to buy a Lexus about 4 years ago from them and when I test drove it something literally fell from somewhere under the hood as I was driving. I left then and never looked back, bought a Lexus from the actual Lexus dealership and am so glad I did. How I ended up back there is beyond me. Needless to say, this place is a scam, they will sell you trash and sleep tight at night. Thank God, the Chysyler dealership is next door! My son got a beautiful (newer) challenger for the he same price with less miles. Bottom line, skip this place, they are the most unethical establishment I have ever encountered. Watch out for Odometer issues. Found a car on line at the Pleasanton location, test drove, got insurance, wrote a check, and got a loan approved. The very last minute they tell me if it has 20K more miles than what they advertised, confirmed in person, saw in writing from them etc. They had this issue before at this location and nationally as well. Buyer beware and ask them to verify the odometer readings. I had to go see the manager on my own and said it was just a mistake. How many people checked, service, and reviewed this car before they listed the miles? It is back on the lot with the higher miles and slightly lower price. Be careful if you purchase here. By falsifying the mileage I wasted over five hours researching, waiting at the dealer, adding insurance, loan applications etc. Naturally no follow up on their part. Did receive a note in the mail that they did indeed tap into my credit history. Truly a poor and deceptive experience with Car Max Pleasanton. They have still not contacted me about this deceptive experience a month later. read more

We have since looked at cars there and in general have had a pretty good experience however we just went to sell the car that we purchased there as we were looking for an SUV. The car we purchased on the reports they provided us via Auto Check which we still have, showed the car was accident free. We went to sell the car and have it advertised as accident free and when we went to sell it and printed out the Car Fax report it shows as having an accident 2 years prior to us purchasing the vehicle making us look shady when selling the car. We were looking also at purchasing another $57,000 car there in the next few days but this has caused us to be hesitant as they said that there was nothing they could do. Nothing? This may have been Auto Check's fault but still it was Car Max that delivered us this data. I am a business owner myself and I wouldn't do that to a customer. If there was an error whether through my own fault or a vendor I would at least do something to try to make it right. read more

We have purchased a late model truck and a cost efficient economy car while at the same time selling back an older truck. CarMax offered us a very fair price for the trade in (while Livermore Ford offered us very little for the same vehicle). Their available warranties were also very reasonable.
