Don't be fooled by the vast advertising campaign by CarMax. This is quite simply just a huge used car lot. We bought a 2013 Audi A5 ($30,000) from them and within 4 months the auto body putty and cheap paint job, used to make it appear pristine, started to crack and pit. I called my salesman countless times and he and the dealer (all of them very smiley) just kept putting me off. After several months they finally said no to any help with the problem because the car had passed their "rigorous" paint inspection before being sold and so there could not be anything wrong with the paint. I was looking to sell an older car (2003), I assumed they would give me lowball price, but figured I'd go anyway just to see. The price they offered was very reasonable and the Kelly price was higher, so they matched it. I'm very happy with the experience. The only downside was the length of time it took once I decided to sell (an hour or so). I had a bad experience with CarMax after multiple satisfying transactions over the past decade. The local store here in Reno is actually pretty good and everyone there was a professional. Where things break down is with the protocols and standards dictated by the parent company. My experience was poor because the vehicle I purchased had multiple defects that should have been discovered under their "rigorous" inspection criteria making it a "CarMax Certified" vehicle. I bought a newer vehicle that I doubt was ever actually inspected. Essentially what happened is that I became the inspection person and had to take the next 30 days to fix my vehicle that I purchased from them. The whole reason why anyone would go to CarMax is so they don't have to deal with the typical dealership. After writing to the top-level management at CarMax, the end result was that they felt completely justified in the fact that multiple things had failed on the vehicle and other things that would be normally taken care of by dealership were in turn taken care of by me. The sad reality is that CarMax has lost a customer for life and I can only tell others that again it's a caveat emptor situation again. I believe the quality of the vehicles at Carmax has gone down as well as their inspection criteria and as such you can probably expect to find a vehicle that looks nice but may have problems that you will have to take care of. Carmax will be completely unapologetic about this and state that this is why they give you 30 days to find all the problems with the vehicle that they sell to you. Where to begin? Lack of communication just because we like to communicate through email to prevent 20 calls a day from dealerships while searching for a car which cost us a chance at a transfer for a vehicle. The bad attitudes as soon as you have concerns or the "bullying" method when you do ask details about the car and its a concern and they say "well, if you don't want the car". No. Just answer the questions. You make it feel like you're hiding something. How about the #1 issue. We get an outside loan and Carmax tries everything to avoid accepting the loan and after a week of avoiding filling out an online portal from our lender in order to verify they would mail the funds to the right people, Carmax states over the phone that they don't accept electronic funds though we give the name of the rep at the lender and the specific instructions on how Carmax will obtain the funds (a check through 2nd day air from UPS). Their response kept being "we don't accept electronic funds. If you would like, we can do a loan application over the phone or you can have an outside lender." That was our outside lender that Carmax refused payment from. Why didn't they state they didn't deal with that lender when we were there talking about that specific lender a week and a half earlier? I would stay away from Carmax. If they don't want to follow simple requests from an outside lender which puts the money in their pocket then ask yourself, will they put money out to fix their vehicles right? That was our concern and we did not do business with them. I know their response would be that they did do the portal and called the lender but when I followed up with the lender there was no record of Carmax calling and no record that the portal was even looked at to be reviewed let alone completed. Another funny coincidence with them is when you want a vehicle transferred you must pay the transfer fee before the vehicle will be transferred. This makes sense since there is a cost to them. The downfall is they take your credit card info over the phone but when you go through the issues we went through and get a refund they take the credit card info again but then mail you a receipt like you are expected to sign it and return it before they refund the money. Well, why didn't we have to sign that you are taking our money? Seems like they add steps in hopes the consumer doesn't follow through so they can keep the transfer fee. This is a wonderful way to buy a used car. I had spent some time researching subcompacts and had settled on the Honda Fit as the best choice for my needs. I was prepared to buy a new one from Honda, but I wanted a manual transmission, which is tough to find. Before going to a Honda dealer I thought I'd see what CarMax had to offer in 2017 models. Lo and behold! They had a manual with low miles in Reno! I live about 90 minutes away in California and though I was a little concerned about buying a car out of state, I felt uncomfortable about asking them to move it to Roseville Ca when I hadn't even looked at it yet. I called for an appointment and they set me up. Unfortunately, I came down with the flu, and had to cancel. They offered to save the car until I could come, and after a couple of days I felt well enough to drive "over the hill" as we say in our town. From the moment we walked in, the service was outstanding, not in the cloying, won't leave you for a moment till you sign way either. They found the car, let me drive it. Used their vast resources to buy our trade-in at above Blue book, temporarily get out of state registration, and since it was Saturday night, set up financing so we could drive it home, and get our credit union financing on Monday. They explained thoroughly how DMV would work, and made sure we had a complete package to give them when we got back to California. They helped us clean out our trade-in, and even put a big yellow bow on the Fit for us for Facebook share. The staff was efficient, polite, supportive, and professional. They worked around every paperwork and possible glitch as it occurred without once making us feel like they were doing us a favor. This was my second CarMax buying experience, and convinced me even more that it's the best way to buy a car. I got the car I wanted, at a great price and never once felt uncertain about what was being offered to me. read more

This is the worst experience ever. DO NOT SHOP HERE!! Carmax sells former rental cars and buys cars without a real inspection. People get rid of used cars for a reason and rental cars are abused. I purchased a 2012 Terrain SLT. I was told the car was a rental but had no accidents and was It started with the tires going from great to bald in one month. Purchased new tires and the tire dealer informed me I had a bent rim. The bent rim even had yellow grease pencil marks where the bend was so it wasn't like it was unknown. It was in the initial warranty and I finally got Carmax to make it right. The car had a miss when I bought it and I assumed it needed a tune up. A few months later the engine light came on and the missed was extreme. Took it to GM deal who informed me it had a bad valve that had been bad for awhile. Literally bad before I bought it. Needless to say it you want a reliable car don't go to Carmax. The are a scam and they don't care what they sell. read more

My experience using the extended warranty offered by Carmax called CAREMAX: I bought my 2005 Honda Element from Carmax at the end of 2014. I had such a great experience in the car buying process. It was straightforward and transparent without all that haggling and back and forth. It was a revelation that car buying could actually be an enjoyable experience and I didn't have to feel like I didn't get the best deal or that I got taken advantage of. I did end up buying the extended warranty called CareMax for about $1500. It seemed like a smart thing to do considering the low-mileage car I was buying was nine years old. Although, I had my reservations about it. Was it a scam? Would it be difficult to make a claim? What do the cover? 2 1/2 years have gone by and the car is doing great....although there were a couple of noises that were happening when I would hit a bump or when I would take a left turn. Also one of the door locks wasn't working well. These problems were nothing that would prevent me from driving the car, but since I had bought this warranty I figured that I would try to make a claim. I took it into the Carmax Service Center. A woman named Rachel helped me. She was very friendly and attentive towards any concerns I had about my car. She called me back later that day and told me they were able to re-create and identify all the issues I had pointed out. She informed me they were going to try to claim every single one of the problems under the warranty, although the door lock issue might be a stretch. She called me back a couple hours later and told me everything (!!!) was covered and that they were ordering the parts. The work they were going to be doing was going to come in at around $3000! I certainly got my money's worth. At that time she offered me a rental car that I believe was covered at $40 per day under the warranty as well. Talk about amazing customer service! It seems sad that these days when a company actually gives you proper customer service or stands by their products, it is a surprise and you feel like you just won the lottery! We then went to the dealer and their appraisal was $2k lower. Back to CarMax and shortly thereafter we left with our check. I found my CarMax buying experience to be easy and completely pressure free. I had completed my research online and knew I wanted a Jeep Grand Cherokee. A CarMax search found numerous Grand Cherokees with the low mileage I wanted and the features that I was looking for. I then took a drive to Reno to have a look at CarMax and to ask some questions on the five day and 30 day policies. Carmen was my saleslady and answered all my questions. She also printed out a quote for extended warranty and offered to check my credit. I did not have her run my credit as I knew it was excellent. Before I left I paid to have a 2014 Grand Cherokee transferred from Ohio to the Reno store. They said it would be about 28 days before the vehicle arrived in Reno. Fourteen days later Carmen called and said the Jeep was in Reno. I made an appointment to meet with her and look the Jeep over. When I arrived Carmen was not there. Come to find out it was her day off. Another salesman then took over brining the Jeep to us for a test drive up Mt. Rose highway. The car drove beautifully. Back at the dealership I saw the vehicle did not have skid plates as I had been told that it did have by the Ohio Dealership (you are allowed five questions to ask the originating dealership). I also saw that the hinge to the gas cap door was broken. The Reno CarMax said they would fix the gas cap door but the plastic protection shield was considered a skid plate and I should have been more specific in my question asking if it had metal skid plates. The salesman even told me that he did not know what a skid plate was. In the end I purchased the Grand Cherokee and the extended warranty ( I had researched other warranties and found the CarMax warranty to be about half the cost of some others). I had obtained a unsecured used auto loan from Lightstream at 2.19% In the end I am happy with the Jeep and the CarMax experience. Not so happy about having to change salespersons and the skid plate issue. I will look at CarMax for future vehicles. read more

This place is amazing. Hands down best car buying experience I have ever had!! Now, I've been around the block and bought several cars in the past, so I know what I'm talking about. Most of the cars I've gotten in the past were either a last minute/quick decision due to transportation needs or a well thought out/researched decision that still did not provide the best of services but I settled (silly me). The care you get as soon as you walk in was superb! I can't remember the last time I was that satisfied of a customer. Great 5 day "think about it policy" and there is absolutely zero pressure when it's time to pay the big bucks. I was impressed with the options for free transfer of the car I REALLY wanted as well. It was within my reach in 3 days. I test drove it, fell in love all over again with the car of my choice and after a few questions because of my past experiences being handled with non judgmental concern/care, I was sold! My husband and I bought an SUV. The 30 day policy covers anything wrong with your car for FREE! Yes, true story no charges at all so hit those buttons, make sure all your windows and bells and whistles work properly and they will fix it for you if they do not. Needed a signal light check and wheel alignment myself and they were done within just a few short hours (I was at work anyway) also got a free car wash. Also, if they don't know the answer they sure will try to find it and communicate with you what's going on with your car throughout the entire service visit. Speaking of having to be at work, a carmax employee drove me to my job! She volunteered to do that since the shuttle wouldn't be available for another 15 mins! I mean, the lengths these employees go to better be recognized they are amazing! Oh yeah, and do get the extended warranty... I mean, that's almost a given for people like me with bad car service history. Lemons don't even describe what I've been through! The service checks on all vehicles go through a rigorous test and only the best of the best are chosen for Carmax. I can't speak for selling a car to them, but buying? would rather give a zero stars / 2 weeks ago my son was approved for a truck with reasonable money down $1500 and monthly payments, with a decent interest rate for a young kid, but needed to wait for 2 weeks where he was at his job for 90 days and they would save the truck and would not have to run his credit again. My son went back 2 weeks later they needed a new pay stub which showed that he actually made more than the pay stub previous and carmax this time told him he needed $6000 down and his interest rate doubled unless he gets a co-signer. Have no clue how 2 weeks made that big of a change. beware they will rip you off and no one at this company knows how to properly do any finances. I've bought many, many cars in the pass, but this is the way to go!! Beautiful selection of cars, clean and nicely priced cars and trucks. Cool system to choose your car, too! They pull from CarMax's across the country so you have a huge area to pick from and find the price that best fits your needs. Working with Troy Watson was awesome, he canceled my transfer on another Volvo that I decided not to take, so I didn't have to pay the fee, and he worked it! Bought my XC60 Volvo and got an awesome rate from Greater Nevada Credit Union (CarMax finances too!), but the best part is that they know Troy. Cindy Ceragioli asked me if I was working with Troy, wow! She set up my loan in one day, we went to the local Minden Branch and Linda helped again, 15 mins later I had my check, and pick up my Volvo. I ordered a bmw that took longer than expected to arrive. I can deal with that. I arrived to pick up and purchase the car, and was not greeted with a smile or any excitement. Was told where the car was parked and that I could go drive it and look at it if I wanted to. Went out there, the car was dirty and a little more banged up than I anticipated, but still, I can deal with it because I really wanted this car. Took a test drive around a one mile radius in which I was not told anything about the car or how it works. I stated that surely the car would be detailed before the purchase, in which Ramon replied, "no we won't be detailing it for you, but we will wash it." The customer service kept getting worse. When asked if someone would show me how to work all of the electronics, Ramon replied, "I'm sure someone here can show you." We went to his desk, got the purchase order and he said to call him once we got the money from the bank that day. He then reminded me to quit calling the dealership because every time I called the people would tell him, "it's her again!" I felt so unappreciated and the customer service was so unsatisfactory that we drove across the street and bought the same car with more options at the bmw dealership! I was even willing to pay more for the red carpet royalty service provided at bill Pearce bmw. Highly recommend working with people who value me, my time and my money! read more

The appraisal process for my old car was quick and easy, the sales reps were friendly and patient, they didn't pressure me in any way to make the purchase, it was a very laid back atmosphere. I feel my local in Reno, Nv carmax has terrible customer service. You can really telI they must not work in commission because they really dont care about making a sale or pleasing their customers..I looked online and found a car out of town spoke to a very ride guy named Mike H... He was so terrible he ended up hanging ON ME.. I then spoke to the Manager and he referred me to another guy and he still wasn't attentive at all..He seemed to be to busy the whole time. I ordered a car from out of town and it took forever for it to arrive..When I would try to call him or the office to get any information, everyone was too busy to give their customer the courtesy to call them back. Eventually the car came in and I ended up purchasing the vehicle but when I bought it they never went over anything on the vehicle and how it worked or anything..In addition I never even received a followup call just to see how things were going with the car or to say thank you..This was one of the worst car buying experiences and I will not recommend them to anyone or shop there again.. read more

I got a car but not very satisfy with my payment. The bank tells you what they want from you and there is no way you can change it or fight it. They always win. The car was over price by 500 dollars and Tyler said that their was no way they can bring the price down that they have a no hassle price. Because of my interest being so high I ended up not buying the extended warranty that I wanted to buy. Again the nu hassle deal. They don't detail the cars like they supposed to but good thing I have a wife that knows how and now looks like new in the inside. We are having some issues with the car and I understand they are taking care of these issues but the worst part on is that the driver side heater not working and with this weather it really needs it. They need to check the cars better before they sale them. One last thing the car I got has hail damage on the top and they told me that they won't fix it because it is a use car. I don't know if that was the reason why the car was 500 over priced. It was not a 3000 car it was a 25000 car so why can't they fix it. Thank you read more

I am still iffy about this place. I am in the market for a new car and have been to many lots 2-3 times over the past few months, incuding Carmax. I like that I am able to walk through the lot and not be hassled, however, I notice that some of their cars are dirty or have some damage to them. I sat in a Mazda SUV and the roof material was coming off. Looks like it was shredded. I say in a Mercedes C250 and it reeked of smoke. Yes, most of their cars are newer and have the remaining factory warranty, but I am just not 100% confident in them. About 2 weeks ago, me and friend went in to peek at their cars again, we typically just tell the greeter we are here to look. However, this time, the gal (i think her name was Lindsey or Julie) an older gal then took it upon herself to walk us to a touch screen TV, ask us what we were looking for, what our budget was so she could help us locate the car as the lot is quite large. We informed her that we have been here before and just wanted to look. We then name off about 8 cars were liked, just to see what she would do, well... she insisted on us giving her a price limit per month we would want to pay. Well sorry, if we like a car thats too expensive we will make it work to get it. We then told her again that we didn't want her assistance and she rudely said "well go ahead out there, no one will bother you" We did not feel comfortable with her swiping her fingers with our price limit on a huge tv and in front of other customers. Sorry, its just a personal thing, especially when asked in that manner and tone. One thing that I did just find out about Carmax is that the NO HAGGLE pricing is basically them telling you that you are unable to talk them down in price as the offer the "best pricing".. not too sure about that. I like being able to talk deals into my car loan or for no cost such as navigation or tinted windows. Now if their cars were in tip top shape, this wouldn't be a problem. I have also been told that they offer the best trade in value, so what you can do is go get your car appraised by them, have them print out the offer and take it to your other car dealer and they will match it. read more

A couple weeks ago now we had what I thought was an impossible situation. We needed to "downsize" our vehicle. We had a fully loaded Expedition EL. About 5 months back we tried to trade it in at another dealership and they wanted $8000 down to offset the equity. Of course I knew that was a garbage deal and walked away. At Carmax we got an above Bluebook offer and we pretty much broke even. The whole goal for us was to get out of the high payment we had on one vehicle and walk out with 2 smaller cars and payments. Carmax accomplished this and then some. We have 2 little boys under 6 who were with us the whole time. They have a little kid area there to keep them entertained. After we knew we could get out of the one vehicle we went through the lot to see what we liked. All the doors on the cars are unlocked, your salesman waits for you inside until you want to test drive, all prices are clearly marked and 99% of the cars are in really good shape. After we found what we liked our salesman walked us through our "paperwork" on a computer. The cool thing is EVERYTHING is done right in front of you. After all your information is put in you can see who the banks are, the interest rates and the payments. On both cars we had 3 options and were able to pick which one we wanted. After that's all squared away you sit in a comfy chair and wait to sign papers. There are no back rooms, salesmen walking back and forth to see what magic they can do and absolutely no pressure at all from anyone. This will be the only place I shop for cars in the future. read more

What a horrible dealership. The first lie they tell you is that they won't lie to you. And it just gets worse from there. Bought a 2013 Hyundai Elentra GT a year ago. They will pressure you to get the extended warranty which unfortunately I did. The salesman told me that Hyundai's warranty doesn't cover if the car has been resold. That was a lie. Just came from the Hyundai dealership after getting the car serviced and was told that Hyundai does cover the car for up to 5 years and 60,000 miles. The salesman also told me when I bought the car that repairs can be expensive for this car that the sun roof mechanism can cost up to 4,000 to repair. Another lie. Checked with Hyundai. First off according to Hyundai these things rarely break and if they do the cost is $200 to $400 to fix. I traded in an Audi A-4 and got way below blue book for it. The salesman told me it was a fair price. Another lie. I hate to admit it but I was a fool. I actually believed the people at CarMax and did my homework after the fact. Extenuating circumstances. I am a 70 year old single grandparent raising my 15 year old grandson and the car was for him after it was paid off and I could afford to get another car for myself. For what I ended up paying I could have got a certified used car or even a new car without some of the amenities for him. After reading some of the other reviews I actually lucked out because this car has been okay. They will also pressure you to get their financing and you can probably do better elsewhere. And that was another lie. My advice: Don't buy a car from CarMax. They will rip you off royally, lie to you and deceive you. It's a wonder that their still in business. read more

I would love to say my experience at the Reno Carmax was wonderful; however, it wasn't. We purchased a 2015 model SUV. I requested the vehicle be detailed like all the big name dealerships do for their clients. The salesman said they don't do that, they wash it inside and out. There were stains on the carpet and since I was spending over $34K for the vehicle, I requested they detail the carpet. He said if we do it could make the stains worse. I felt he wasn't listening to my concerns so I called his manager. The manager told me they "detail" all their vehicles once the transaction is secure and it looks like it will close successfully. He said they wait in case the deal falls through and they have to put the vehicle back on the lot for test driving. This satisfied me until we got there to sign the final paperwork and I asked about the detailing. At this point, the manager comes over and says...we don't do a true detail job cause that takes too long. We just make sure it is cleaned inside and out. Then, we had discussed the financing the day before we brought in the down payment. The salesman asked if we wanted them to register the vehicle at the time of sale. We weren't even aware this was an option until then. The last vehicle we purchased was 10 years ago. When we came in after 5:00 on a Friday night to complete the transaction, certified check in hand, he asks us for our insurance certificate. We did not know we needed to bring in the certificate at that time and he should have explained that along with a certified check for the down payment we would also need our insurance certificate. We contacted our insurance rep and although he verified we would be covered for the next 30 days, Carmax would not include the registration in the transaction. We had already included the registration fee in the certified check that now had to all be applied toward the down payment and we would have to come up with another $605 to register the vehicle on our own. When I said to the salesman it would have been nice to have known this was needed before we got here. His comment was...."I distinctly remember telling you to bring that." Now neither myself or my spouse heard any such thing and I said so. He simply dug in and said he told us. Which, he did not. Why would we know to bring the certified check but not know to bring the insurance certificate if it were that important to the transaction if he in fact had told us. There was no apologetic reaction whatsoever. The entire process was painful and took the joy out of getting a new vehicle. If you choose to use Carmax, please note they do not detail their vehicles although they say they do and ask for a written list of what you need to bring to closing. Not a happy camper. read more
